good morning. welcome to 9 news now special coverage of our region's latest snowfall. it is wednesday, february 3rd. i'm andrea roane. and i'm bruce johnson. our weather team of howard bernstein, devon lucie are here with your forecast. angie goff has traffic but we look at the latest closings and delays. >> we start in virginia where the following school systems are closed this morning. they are -- here's howard.

>> good morning. the storm winding down right now. anywhere from one to six inches has fallen during the overnight and devon lucie is with me this morning. he's gathering the totals and we like to get your storm reports, as well. you can submit that on wusa9.com. this started around this evening rush hour. you can see it is almost out of here. one band still coming through eastern howard, baltimore city and just coming in to northwest there and eastern fairfax around springfield down 395 wilson bridge. thenen the moderate snow is lingering annapolis across the bay over to queens town, chester, kent island seeing heavier snow through shady side and southern anne arundel. dunkirk, north beach, still dealing with moderate snow which extends to eastern charles. western charles, west of 301 pretty much out of it except by newberg. dahlgren on the other side winding up for you.

it has to pass through calvert and the rest of st. mary's county and the northern neck spoke to bill and he had an inch and a half down there but things are winding down for those folks. the bigger picture on the computer. as you can see the storm system is pulling away. may be lingering snow showers in the mountains. the clouds will hang tough through this morning. only some sunshine is expected. you see the temperatures this morning. the temperatures are running in the low 30s in most areas. 34 national. we are as cold as 26 in winchester. we have some frozen streets out there t. side streets were messy for me. main streets seem okay. looking at temperatures today, we will get melting going on. probably in the low 40s, 40ish and then we will turn our attention to what could be coming for the end of the week. i will have more for you at 4:15. angie goff is in early with us. tell us about the traffic trouble spots. >> metro buses are running on a

snow emergency schedule and i hear they are going to be doing that throughout the rush hour. metro is expected to be back to normal as far as their schedule is concerned but of course i'm here to keep you updated if anything changes. north capitol street is closed because of ongoing police activity going on. an overturned tractor-trailer. this is something that popped up early this morning. this is at gaither road in rockville. it looks like crews are trying to remove the fuel from the truck. they will be out there for some time and right now they are taking away the lanes out there. moving outside, say hello to 270 southbound. looks like the main thoroughfares have been treated but good reason to use caution. it is slick out there. in the outer loop in maryland everything is all clear as evidenced by this live shot from university and finally let's wrap it up with 66 eastbound. hey, virginia, a nice lonely

commute here past compton road to inside the beltway. back to you. we want to update you on a recent school closings we received. department of defense schools are closed in quantico, virginia and of course that's at the bottom of the screen. we will take you outside for the latest conditions in your community. kristin fisher is live in silver spring with a look at things there. hello, kristin. >> reporter: good morning. we have a few flakes falling but for the most part the storm is definitely winding down as you heard howard mention a few minutes ago. i'm standing at this four corners section of maryland in silver spring. this is university and colesville road. we drove here from northwest dc this morning. got to say roads are looking real good. main roads for the most part were clear. didn't see a lot of standing snow on the ground but as we were driving on those main roads i was checking out the side streets and they are not looking good this morning. i didn't see a smaller street

that had been plowed this morning. a lot of snow on the ground. drivers, you want to be careful as you get out of the driveway and head out of the neighborhood this morning. another thing you want to watch out for, of course, we have gotten about five inches here this morning. so when you walk out to your car you are going to see snow on it. aguarantee it. it is sticky but the good news it comes right off. you are not going to need a brush. you could probably kick it out of the way or if you have a blower, blow it out of the way, light fluffy snow and it is gorgeous, beautiful this morning. that's the good news. live in silver spring, back to you. >> thank you. the snow coverage continues with a look at things in northern virginia. >> jessica doyle is live in the tysons corner area with more. good morning, jessica. >> reporter: good morning, guys. we'll tell you the report here in northern virginia is similar to what you heard from kristin in silver spring.

we are at 123 chain bridge road, international drive, the area between tysons corner, center mall and the galleria, we have a lot of company, even though it is 4:00 in the morning because we have a lot of trucks going up and down the lane. we have the delivery truck, pepsi just passed us by. there is a convoy of salt trucks going by. vdot is placing the salt bryne on the roads to help with the melting of the snow. we have four inches here. we did a little measurement and here is what we want to tell you about. the snow is obviously out there and it is great packing snow to make a fantastic snowball but under that you have a thick layer of ice and snow pack. it is hard to describe except for saying it is icy snow. it is not a sheet of ice but icy snow and this can be pretty slippery. tysons corner center, this area has been plowed pretty well. so is the beltway and we want

you to know obviously the side streets can be slippery. you want to keep speeds down because of this icy condition. so, andrea, bruce, back to you. >> thank you. the latest snowfall is costing maryland and virginia big bucks. virginia budgeted $80 million for snow removal this season, but after working over the weekend, that money is now gone. vdot crews have put in 106 hours of overtime since the december blizzard. the state of maryland is in the red. it was already over the snow budget by $10 million before last weekend's storm. crews are staying busy across the district, also. here's a look at what you will be dealing with on roadways this morning. mayor fenty says 200 plow truck and private contractors have been out around the clock. >> the goal of course is to get the snow off as quickly as possible. i want to thank dpw and ddot

for the really aggressive work that was done this past weekend, hitting residential streets, hitting the main corridors, getting the snow up and doing it in an example lair fashion. >> reporter: the district also plans to have all sidewalks cleared this morning. they say you can help out by putting down sand or kitty litter. overnight snowfall led to problems for a tanker truck driver in montgomery county. the truck overturned last night around 10:15. this happened in rockville and gaither road. the driver was trapped inside the truck and had to be pulled out by fire crews and taken to a hospital. some of the fuel did spill from the truck. cleaning up the spill is expected to take a few more hours this morning. u.s. intelligence officials warn of a possible attempted terror attack. and the management's don't ask don't tell policy becomes top priority for the top brass.

take it slow on the ramps and bridges. this is a lonely key bridge on this early wednesday morning. more commutes coming up. in the news now at 4:11, intelligence officials say an attempted attack by al-qaeda can be expected in the next three to six months. the chilling warning came on tuesday during a hearing with member of the senate intelligence committee. leon pan net that told congress that al-qaeda is inspiring home grown extremists to trigger violence on their own. cbs news learned the family members of the man behind the christmas day bombing attack helped with the investigation. he is accused of trying to blow up a u.s. airliner just before it landed in detroit. the nation's top defense officials have told lawmakers it's time for the military to give up the don't ask, don't tell policy.

welcome back to 9 news now's special coverage of today's snowfall. most of the snow has stopped. the plows are hitting the highways and streets trying to clean things up in time for the rush hour. >> the traffic and weather in just a moment but first update you on the latest closings and delays. >> in virginia the following systems are closed -- >> we are looking at the snowstorm pulling away now. this is one of the three storms we could see in to next week, as well. the snow is winding down.

and the cleanup is beginning. devon lucie has been with me all morning and we are trying to get the totals together. devon is outside and we will take our first wusa snow measurement of the morning. >> snow officially ended here in the northwest. follow me if you will. we will take our official measurement. we have a nice table, flat, shielded away from the wind and it is a good measurement. i will take a couple here. this is snowing about four inches. this is what you do with official measurements. you take several and this is showing a little over four. and you always take the highest reading. this shows four and a half to five inches. i'm going with 4 1/2 inches is the highest total on the weather terrace in northwest dc. the snow totals where you are, though, this is what i put together so far from what you have sent in at wusa9.com. and right now on the virginia side we have totals as high as

5.3 inches in the morning but the highest total in maryland is west southwest of damascus, montgomery county, 6.5 inches or nearly 6.5. >> that's not too far from me. we are coming in at six inches in the clarksburg region. we have had again anywhere from four to six up there. bill in newland called in the northern neck and he had an inch and a half. dry weather and by friday afternoon is when the next storm will come in. not sure how many schools will

just a very thin line of snow here. looks like now it is probably getting east of the baltimore- washington parkway, east of town. as we go to the east, though, annapolis looks like the snow is just about over for you as it is pulling to the eastern shore now. queenstown, town here. to mcdaniel. this batch of snow is coming through easton and saint michaels, as well. southern maryland, we are dealing with a little snow north beach to saint leonard. in calvert county, lusby you may be clipped by this. mechanicsville just about over for you. and in hollywood a few areas, a little snow shower. temperatures, barely at the freezing mark. this was a much wetter, heavier snow than on saturday. upper 20s in the shenandoah valley, frederick, montgomery county, 27 culpeper.

quantico is freezing, annapolis freezen. southern maryland had some rain earlier. that switched back to snow. pax river 33. it is now 32 at reagan national. we have been bouncing 32, 34. winds are north at three and the humidity is high at 88%. if you have outside this is the cold that cuts through you. while we are watching the storm leave, devon and i were looking at this one and he said, holy crap, that's a lot of moisture. that's what he said and i have to agree with him. you can see the storm coming in to california and look at texas, the moisture explodes the last hour. this storm will be here on friday afternoon and friday evening and pretty much saturday the way it looks. it will be a major winter storm for us, a significant winter storm and there's another one coming maybe next tuesday. quiet weather today as this storm will pull away. a weak area of high pressure will build in and tomorrow afternoon this should be on thursday afternoon.
