5:34 am
almost like we had rain overnight opposed to snow. vdot has been out all night taking the snow off the roads and treating. you will find very good conditions on the major highways. the neighborhoods are a different story entirely. but this wet roadway can be very deceptive because that can ice up. you want to be careful on the bridges, on the ramps, on the overpasses. we are at tysons corner and you can see we have a couple of large buildings here. very foggy. howard was talking about this a second ago. this freezing fog. thisaway people will see as they move out and about today. as for the roadways, again, looking very good. it could be slick in spots and you want to be aware of that black ice but the temperature does feel warmer here now. so we might be in good shape today. guys, back to you. >> thank you. across state lines in to montgomery county. >> that's where kristin fisher is watching the rush hour develop in silver spring.
5:35 am
good morning, kristin. >> good morning. the bad news of course is that it snowed again. you know, roads are pretty slick this morning but they are looking pretty good, especially on the main roads but the good news is, it is absolutely beautiful outside. in my opinion the prettiest snowfall of the season. i want to show you video that our photographer kevin king shot in silver spring. check this out. the trees are stunning. as you are driving in to work you may have a longer commute but look outside the window. it is looking really nice outside. an you are not going to see just a little bit of white but a lot of white because the snow is really wet. really sticky stuff. kind of slushy. almost looks like the base of a ski resort at the end of the season when you have slushy snow you are trying to get over. gorgeous outside. here in montgomery county, schools are closed. so if you want to get your kids outside, go for a walk. it's not that cold.
5:36 am
looking really good. that's what i recommend doing if you are one of the lucky few that get a snow day. take a look at this. we are parked at the woodmore shopping center in four corners and we parked our live truck here at 3:00 a.m. this morning since then snowplows have paveed the parking lot and you can see the wall of snow that piled up in front of our live truck. if you are parked on the side street and the plows have come by and you have a smaller car, bigger cars may be able to get over it but if you have a smaller car plan a few extra minutes to dig this out. we may get out of here with our live truck because it is a heavy truck but if you have a smaller car you will not be able to get over this. andrea and bruce, looking good this morning. pleased to report that to you. back to you in the studio. >> thank you. you may think with fewer people driving in bad weather the price of gas may go down. >> that's not the case, we're toll. because with more storms and
5:37 am
cold season the demand for home heating oil is up. you'll see prices climb at the pump and probably your utility bill, as well. >> yeah, i stay at home and i keep my thermostats turned down a little bit. wear sweaters and socks in the house. >> i didn't buy all the fruits i would normally buy because it was too expensive. >> reporter: you will see the results of the bitter wenter in the produce aisle where prices have been climbing since the cold snap in florida. bad weather could dampen the economic recovery. well, you have one last chance to see the national zoo's top attraction frolic in the snow. >> today is the last day that tai shan will be on public display. tomorrow the 4 1/2 year old cub will depart for china. he are was born in july of 2005 as part of the zoo panda lease. >> a big bouncing baby boy.

5:45 am
welcome back to 9 news now. we want to check on the plowing efforts. >> with us is john from the dc department of transportation. how are the roads out there? >> the main roads appear to be in very good shape. they have all been treated and are wet. and should be mostly clear. you might find some slush on the sides of the major road and maybe in turn lanes, that sort of thing. but the main roads are in good shape and the crews continue to work on the residential streets. they are still treating residential streets but the main roads look good and the government offices and schools will be open this morning on time. >> update us on federal workers. they are also in today, right? >> i'm sorry, i didn't hear what you said. >> federal workers should report also, correct. >> i believe so. they maybe on a liberal leave schedule but the federal government is open as well as the district government. all of our offices will be open. >> let's go back to the
5:46 am
secondary roads. that's always a complaint. we understand you need time to get the main roads plowed, salted, but what about the secondary roads. >> we are still working on those. we have light plows that work on residential streets from the beginning. but when we have, when the main roads are in good shape we can shift our larger heavy plows to the residential neighborhoods, as well. there's obviously not a ton of snow to plow on the ground this morning, but we can treat. one thing that will help is when people get around and drive around and there's traffic on the roadways and that will help as well to clear the roads, but one of our big concerns is the pedestrians. you know, because the schools are open there will be a lot of kids walking to school and we really need one, drivers to be on the lookout for pedestrians of all ages and also we need businesses and residents to
5:47 am
shovel their walks because the last thing we want is for people to walk in the roadways because the sidewalks aren't clear. so if everybody can get out this morning and do that that would be a big help. >> that includes local government, as well. that was the complaint during the december storm, as well. john mentioned that federal government is on unscheduled leave. that's at the bottom of the screen and other closings and delays are always there. >> okay. let's get you updated on the schools we know that are closed or delays in maryland. -- in virginia --
5:48 am
>> in west virginia -- closings and delays are constantly running at the bottom of the screen. if you didn't hear your school jurisdiction, you can go to our website at wusa9.com. they are updated there constantly. >> we were just talking about this storm, the snow is over. >> we are done. little fog leftover and we are done. talk about the weekend. >> it will be another big one. bigger than this one and maybe twice as big, maybe three times as big. >> don't make any weekend outdoor plans. >> except for shoveling on sunday. >> what about you talked about
5:49 am
tuesday. something else. >> may not be as big maybe like this one. let's not get ahead of ourselves but there is something down the road for next week, as well. devon lucie has been with us and we are talking about the upcoming forecast and he has been tasked with tracking the snow totals and he has more. >> we will get the totals in a second. but i want to say this heavy thick, wet snow. shoveling the sidewalks, give yourself plenty of time to get that done. this is a heavy snow. where you can't get the snow where you stepped on it turns in to ice and that's hard to remove. if you packed down some of it, such a high water content that's the tough part to remove. the latest storm reports, looks like northern virginia is coming in with more widespread totals. 5.5, 6-inch totals in northern fairfax loudoun

i want to say to the older brother and sisters that will be getting together with the younger brothers and sisters and doing this this afternoon, don't pack it too much. that's an ice ball and that hurts. >> talk from experience. you must have had an older brother taking out out on you. talk about this afternoon, 40, 42. melting done. great igloo making snow, too. friday here is storm number two of three. we'll see snow by the afternoon or evening. in the upper 30s if we are lucky. at the because stop for those going late, mostly cloudy upper 20s to 3 # mid-30s. partly sunny and if we see a little sun i want will be optimistic. tonight, lows in the 20s. the storm there it is and there it goes. quickly leaving, southern new
