the scene. she will have traffic for you in just a moment. >> hey. >> howard burnstein starts us off. >> it is over for now. get ready. we have another storm coming friday into saturday and will be larger than the one from last night that dropped half a foot of snow. and much larger is what i'm leaning toward. this morning let's show you what is going on. we have the storm system pulling away. behind it some snow in western pennsylvania. northeast in ohio. we're seeing a little of this now in the form of light flurries and snow showers. here is frederick and to the north of washington there, up 270 and 70. between frederick and hagers town there you will see some of that very light snow and snow

shower activity. otherwise it is free and clear at the moment. that wasn't the case a few hours ago. we have been tracking the storm all night. he joins us noise. >> reporter: to be very careful. you saw him come out here and you had to snow blow over the weekend. this is nothing like that. if you step on that after a little while it is a slush and it is hard to remove. you have to do the upside down shoveling method. this is the type of snow to take your time. take several breaks because this is a very high water content snow. the thunderstorm we had nearly 1 inch of rain create 15 inches of snow. a lot of wet snows are 10 to 1. this is a pretty hefty amount

of weight i have in the snow shovel. to be careful. a great packing snow as opposed to what we had on saturday. a lot of low level moisture. still around o in culpeper. watch out for the fog over the next couple of hours. >> reporter: the time now is 7:04. although we have some well treated streets out there, we're seeing quit a few problems. 7th street at if h. they are blocking the left lane there, because of smoke reporters at the gallery place met pro. the red line being delayed bus of that as well. >> here is the breaking news we told you about. it is shut down at 1 9th street in southeast dc because of a house fire. it is blocking all lines.

the commuters are driving through pretty quickly. they are at speed or over speed this morning. they were treating the roads last night and getting it in good shape. there are really icy patches out there. we want to let you know, you want to be careful. use your common sense. if you think there is black ice on the road, there probably is. i want to give you a little cautionary tale. i direct you to my own feet. these boots i am wearing today have seen me through lots of snow storms and have kept me dri and warm. the ice has melted this morning. it is like a rainstorm out here. if the is damp. you want to dress not only for snow, but for the equivalent of a rain storm. keep those feet dry. no high heels and open toed shoes today. you may see around this area too, there is a lot of fog so

if you're taking to the roads, if you're driving to work, be sure to keep your lights on. don't forget even though the sun is coming up here because the visibility is not terrific. that will be away the other drivers see you as you're driving around. again, you're going to want to keep your speeds down even though the roads look pretty good. be wear of the ice patches. back to you. >> jessica, thank you. >> our snow stopped falling early this morning. >> the race has been on for the dot to clean off the main and secondary roads as possible. when the snowfall was increased 3 to 6 inches the city went into full deployment. >> every truck that we have in the district of columbia government inventory which is about 200 will be out on the streets. we will call in private contractors also to help out.

welcome back. 7th street is closed at h street because of smoke. more on your roads and trains. >> it is 7:11. some toyota dealerships have the parts they need to fix sticky gas pedals. toyota insists this is a mechanical fault and increasing a reenforcement bar can help. but a lawyer sued the auto maker blaming the problem is electronic. investigators place most of the blame in that flight on pilot error. the jet crashed into a neighborhood in buffalo last february killing all 49 people on board and one on the ground. >> they are telling lawmakers it is time to abandon the "don't ask, don't tell policy" for gays in the military.

i don't want you to panic, but it could be another crippling snow storm as it comes to saturday. >> let's talk about today. here is a picture from one of our regulars in the chat room. he wanted to talk about some of the fog and you can also see the snow covering everything, a beautiful flocking snow with the wetness and light winds that stuck to everything. she measured 6 inches out in the yard there at the burns steen compound. culpeper, a quarter. some of those really low visibilities there. we're at 3 miles here at reagan national, not bad, but watch out for low visibilities. dulles as 28. annapolis 32. over the cross the bay, cambridge at the freezing mark.

snowy morning here. this is looking like almost a normal commute but we have fairfax county schools out. some have liberal leave policy today. lots of people at this red light here. earlier we caught up with v dot and he gave us some advice if you're taking to the roads this morning. even though the main roads are treated, here is what he had to say. >> take your time even though the snow is not accumulated on the roads right now. just kind of take your time and keep in mind it is cold and there is a possibility of ice. there is a lot of sand down. just take your time and don't push it. now, as you can see, the fog is starting to lift here. we even have some patches of blue sky. it stopped snowing here about 3:00, 4:00, but i want to show you the conditions of this

florida. we have been enjoying snowy conditions around the washington metro area this morning. >> you can share foe photos. that is near winchester. >> pretty sight there. police have made an arrest in the murders of a mother and son entail city, virginia. investigators say she knew the victim. 41-year-old. they didn't give any motives though. the victim's husband found the bodies friday night. we know the name of a man struck and killed. the 30-year-old of maryland and 34-year-old of the district.

prince georges county police did not identify the 30-year- old woman arrested in the crash. the chief medical examiner said the student was murdered but did not release details of how she died. she disappeared last october. her body was found last week about ten miles from the arena. martin o'malley looked for the positifs. >> the state of our state is stronger than most and in areas like public education, it is stronger than every state in the union. seriously injured victims are children. dc fire and ems spokesperson joins us on the phone with more. tell us more about this and where did this fire take place? >> good morning. it started around 6:00 in the 1900 block of nailer road southeast. 1920 nailer road, a three story apartment building. they were able to gain access. they found three children and were all unconscious. the fire was quickly contained and confined to the apartment in the kitchen area. the cause of the fire, still under investigation. we believe that the children were found in the back bedroom and the fire originated in the kitchen. >> tell us more about these children now. do you mav any ages and do you

know their conditions now? >> still sorts all that out. i believe they all have been resuscitated, all in critical condition. they are at the hospital. paramedics did a great job, but i'm still sorting out the ages. two of the kids were younger than the other but they were all young children. >> what about adults in the home at the time. >> still sorting all that out. preliminary report there were adults home and the door was locked. they went to seek help and call for help and the door locked behind them and they couldn't gain access but for whatever reason, adults were in the area. they couldn't get access to the apartment. firefighters arrived moments later. talk about working smoke

a potentially bigger snow may be on the horizon. we'll talk about a friday, saturday timetable tonight. we want to update you at 7:47. >> we are told three children have been critically injured in southeast washington. what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, bruce it is a heartbreaking story this morning on nailer street. fire broke out around 6:00 a.m. and now three kids were taken front burning building. two are in critical condition.

joining me now to tell what happened is deputy fire chief cross white. >> we received a call for an apartment fire. it was a very normal, looked like nothing showing from the front there. they found that they had an apartment fire on the second floor. upon extinguishing the fire, rescue was happening at the same time. three young children were taken out. two infants and one child. >> how are they doing now? did they suffer burns or was it smoke inhalation? >> right now, their injuries i'm not aware. when ney left here they were in very grave condition. right now we've been told they are in critical condition at this time. they are breathing on their own which is really good information. >> reporter: clearly this just happened. i know it is under

investigation but do you know where the parents were when the fire broke out? >> that is part of the investigation process. they will determine the cause and origin. also they will put all the pieces together. >> reporter: we don't know the cause of the fire yet, but do you know exactly where it broke out? >> it is an apartment on the second floor. we don't know the area of oh gin at this time. they are going to get all that information. >> reporter: was the fire contained to that one apartment or did it spread through the entire apartment building? >> the fire was contained to that unit itself. the building was evacuated. after it was deemed to be safe, we returned all the occupants back to the apartments due to the inclement weather. >> thank you for joining us.

inch. even checking with west virginia, snowfall totals, 6 1/2 inches there. way out there, 7 inches of snow was the highest report we saw. i'm going to call this the week of the trifecta of possible snow storms coming in. one now, the possibility of this next one by this weekend and then tuesday's storm. >> everyone is focusing on the friday/saturday snow. that looks like a real significant storm. friday, morning should be okay. afternoon, mid afternoon toward evening the snow will begin. could mix a little south and east but you're going to go to all snow during the overnight friday the way things look like now. mostly cloudy. sunny breaks. a little blue outside with the fog as well. 28 to 35. sun came up about 40 minutes ago at 7:12. then this afternoon partly sunny, seasonably chilly, low 40s. a couple of flurries out there.

forecast. low 40s today and tomorrow. here is the next significant snow friday afternoon evening, through saturday. then another storm tuesday. as we close the 8:00 hour, we want to start with northeast north capitol street all lanes shut down between v and channing, use georgia, sherman, 13th, 14th and there has been ongoing police activity all morning long. >> this is the heartbreaking story of that apartment fire that keeps nailer road shut down at 1 9th street. we heard live three children injured in that. the good news is is that the blaze is out, but we have road closures and crews on the scene. the beltway in virginia, we're theyed up toward route 50. no incidents or accidents.

roads cleared no matter what the cost. the problem is it needs to find money to do that. after saturday's storm vdot is out of snow removal money. the northern virginia area has spent $32 million this winter and as you heard howard say time and time again there is more snow on the way. they spent the same amount last winter, and just $20 million the winter before. plows and salt trucks have been out for hours. let's look at connecticut avenue and van ness streets in northwest washington. you can see down to the payment, roads are clear but still wet. about 200 trucks have been out all night clearing the path. the director of the department of public works is reminding you to do your part as well. >> i want to remind residents to clear their sidewalks. tomorrow is a school day, so we want to have the sidewalks clear so pedestrians will stay on the walk and not walk in the street. >> and schools are open in the

hospital. three children total after a fire broke out inside of the their apartment at 6:00 a.m. this morning. now, this is a three-story apartment building, about five houses down on naylor road in southeast dc. dc fire and ems arrived on the scene shortly after 6:00 a.m. we spoke with the deputy chief a few minutes ago. here's what he had to say about what firefighters found when they arrived on the scene. >> approximately 6:14 this morning our office of communications received a call for a fire. when units arrived it was normal, looked like nothing showing from the front there. as they made an aggressive interior attack they found a fire on the second floor. upon extinguishing the fire rescue was ensuing at the same time and the rescue squad removed three young children, two infant and one child. we have been told from the hospital they are in critical condition at this time. they are breathing on their own and have a spontaneous pulse

back and that is really good information. >> reporter: two infant and one child in the hospital. we don't know if they have suffered burns or if they are suffering from smoke inhalation. it is likely one of the two. we have dc firefighters on the scene right now. they are investigating exactly what caused this fire. they are also trying to figure out what where the parents were when this fire broke out. we don't know for sure if these children were alone. but we are hearing reports they were found in a bedroom by themselves. questions are clearly rising where were the parents here when this fire broke out? so firefighters are investigating that and they are investigating the cause of the fire as we speak. now, if there is any good news in all of this, it is that that fire was contained to that one single apartment. this is again a three-story apartment building. no other units were affected. however, residents were evacuated but have been let back in which is of course a good thing since it is quite

we're back with the extended coverage of the latest winter blast. loo a live look at route 355 and shady grove road in rockville, maryland. joining us on the phone is the snow operations center manager in montgomery county. steve, thanks for joining us. tell us what do the roads look like out there? >> the main roads are looking good. mostly wet at this time. the neighborhood roads, however, are still snow covered. the ones we haven't plowed yet but the plowing operations we have been doing that for several hours now and we are working through the neighborhoods. >> about those neighborhoods, we always get the calls people want it done like yesterday when can they expect to see some pavement on neighborhood streets? >> probably sometime this afternoon at the very latest. the weather is working well with us. the temperatures are coming up above freezing right now. we're looking at temperatures just below freezing to above freezing and that's helping everything. >> how much snow did you get out there? and a question, why do they

here. as for the roadways, they are looking really good. vdot came out overnight. got the snow off the roads. did the de-icers. so it is looking good. as you can see the traffic is really moving through here. this is 123. it goes through the beltway. it is a main drag here. i spoke to a police officer not too long ago and he said in terms of the beltway today what you can expect in terms of road construction, unclear at this point if they will continue with those lane widening projects today. so we will have to keep track of that but there are projects going on with overpasses. so folks who are traveling around should keep that in mind. people might be asking us this morn hong kong, why are schools closed if the roads look this terrific. i will tell you why, this is why. this is the kind of ice you will find under the snow. a lot of these little side streets the buses need to go to they have snow on top of crusty ice we have had since saturday when the first snowstorm came

what caused this fire to break out, but the real story here are the three children that were affected by this fire. two children are in critical condition. another is also in the hospital because they were entrapped inside of this apartment where the fire broke out around 6:00 a.m. this morning and we have new information about their condition. maybe not about their condition but definitely we now know their ages. joining me to tell us about that is pete with dc fire and ems. what more do we know about these children? >> the good news is -- unfortunately they were found unconscious or semi conscious. they were resuscitated and essentially revived by paramedic and transported to the hospital. they are in stable condition but they are all critical. we have 5-year-old boy, 2-year- old female and a 5 or 6-month- old female. they were all found unconscious and resuscitated and they are in stable condition but critical at area hospitals. >> really young infants there.

wow. angie? >> all right. thank you, howard. you can always stay connected for your traffic needs through twitter or facebook. i heard from capital weather and he said what's up with the outer lap in virginia. we have an accident near the dulles toll road exit. it is taking up two lanes. as a result we are watching the taillights stack up around the american legion bridge area. moving to the outer loop, this time in maryland, between 95 and georgia avenue. a different scene here. looks like that delay really cleared out nicely. we are tracking the bw parkway, heading southbound toward 202. that's where we are losing the right lane because of more crash activity. we are checking on southbound 355. this is something new at marnelli. we have more crash activity. it is blocking the right shoulder and blocking the right lane, as well. 270 southbound, wrap it up with that and take you outside. northbound we have some congestion around the germantown road area and then just got word of another accident in the area, as well.

now to other stories making news. an arlington woman is behind bars accused in a double murder. >> the victims were found 24 hours ago in dale city, virginia virginia. the boy's father is 47-year-old natalia wilson's husband. she is charged in their murders. police say they all knew each other. police now confirm morgan harrington was murdered. the body of the virginia tech student was murdered three months after she vanished. still no word on how she died or who killed her. this morning, prince william county is the new deputy executive. after a seven-month search the board of supervisors appointed her on tuesday. she's been serving for the past 11 years. you could soon be legally zooming along virginia highways at 70 miles an hour. both houses of the legislature passed it yesterday approving
