this is 9 news now. hello, welcome to 9 news now at noon. i'm j.c. hayward. well, our weather team called it right snow blanketed our area and it did cause some widespread closures and some delays, but guess what? the storm that we had is going to be nothing compared to what is on our way. because there's another winter weather alert and our meteorologist devon lucie is in our 9 news now weather center and he has the latest on our forecast first. >> that's right. we are tracking another storm already that is over the central part of the united states, parts of texas, tracking through that area and it is going to be here before we know it. in the meantime, look at the satellite and radar from earlier today. there's the snow that came through overnight through this morning. officially 3.3 inches of snow at reagan national but a lot of us have had higher snowfall

totals. we will show you where those are coming. i want to point out right there. see the breaks in the clouds. finally getting sunshine to come up. that is actually helping temperatures to rise well above freezing in many places. the lower 40s for this afternoon and look at when the next storm coming and we will also look at what's to come through the rest of the weekend, too. j.c.? >> thank you, devon. three children who were left home alone have been rushed to the hospital. fire investigators are trying to figure out how their apartment caught fire. chris fin fisher has more on the children's conditions and also on the investigation that is going on in southeast washington washington. >> fire at 6:00 a.m. this morning. the three story apartment building has 64 unit and located five houses down on naylor road here in southeast dc

. they say fire started. we spoke to the police chief and here's what he had to say. >> as units made an aggressive interior attack they found they had an apartment fire on the sec floor. upon extinguishing the fire, rescue was ensuing. rescue squads removed three children. >> reporter: we now know the ages of those children injured in the fire. one is a 2-month-old baby girl. another is a 2-year-old girl and also a 5-year-old boy. we're told that all three kids are in stable but critical condition at a local hospital. we do not know if they sustained any burn injuries, but we know they suffered from severe smoke inhalation. in southeast dc, kristin fisher, 9 news now. >> a fast-moving fire also swept through a mobile home in

hampton, virginia killing three children there. investigators are still trying to figure out how the fire started. officials say two adults and a fourth child were able to escape. the snow has subsided but there are things to consider if you are traveling through virginia. jessica doyle has more from tysons corner. she's near the beltway. >> reporter: we are reporting from tysons corner, virginia at chain bridge road and international drive, a main thoroughfare here in tysons corner where we got three to four inches of snow with this overnight storm. the bulk of the storm was at 3:00 this morning and that was good news. it gave vdot plenty of time to hit the roads with convoys of trucks. they were plowing, spreading de- icer on the roads and getting ready for the commute and the hard work paid off. we had a smooth commute here in tysons corner. the main roads were in great shape. a lot of the roads looked like a rain event rather than a snow

event. a lot of water on the roads but that doesn't mean commuters didn't have some issues. >> right now the roads are looking good other than being wet and stuff. they have been keeping them good and keeping on top of it. other than the side streets i have seen, the main roads look like really good. >> the side streets can be challenging and vdot will continue to hit the streets trying to get the snow and ice out of the way. a note of caution for midday and evening drivers, obviously there's water on the road. temperatures are cold. note of caution, keep speeds down and keep a safe distance between the car in front of you and stop signs and intersections intersections. well, all of the know that we have seen is breaking several local budgets. virginia budgeted $80 million

questions about a stark warning that he gave senators yesterday. director dennis blair believes al-qaeda could try to strike again in the next three to six months. joel brown has more now from captiol hill. >> house lawmakers are grilling the director of national intelligence about a stark warning he gave to a senate panel. >> what's the likelihood of another terrorist attempted attack on the u.s. homeland in the next three to six months, high or low? director blair? >> an attempted attack the priority is certain i would say. >> intelligence officials believe al-qaeda is deploying agents inside of the united states, ready to launch new attacks from within our borders. the cia director leon panetta warned in a hearing he has new concerns about the extremist network. >> al-qaeda is adapting their methods in ways that often times make it difficult to detect. >> reporter: the cia director went on to tell lawmakers that

he doesn't believe there's another nine eleven style attack in the works. he thinks now the terrorist group is trying to carry out smaller attacks that require little training and simple devices. he pointed to the failed attempt to blow up a plane over detroit on christmas day as an example of that strategy. senior obama administration officials tell cbs news the suspect in that attack is now cooperating with investigators after the u.s. brought his family members to meet with him. intelligence director blair said the government had made changes to prevent another attack like the one on christmas day because he himself warned the question is not if there will be an attack but when. joel brown, cbs news, washington. michael jackson's personal physician is expected to surrender and face charges. los angeles prosecutors plan to file manslaughter charges against dr. conrad murray. the doctor could face up to four years in prison if he is

convicted. the king of pop died june 25th from an anesthetic overdose. dr. murray maintains nothing he gave jackson should have killed him. an arrest has been made in the murders of a mother and son from dale city, virginia. police have identified the suspect as 47-year-old natalia wilson of arlington. they say she was a family acquaintance. there's no word on the possible motive. medical examiners in the commonwealth say a virginia tech student whose body was found in a farm field last month was murdered. harrington disappeared last october while attending a concert in charlottesville. well, you could soon drive past virginia state police at 70 miles an hour without worrying about getting a ticket. both houses of the legislature

the trial is underway in the deadly street racing crash in maryland. in opening statements yesterday, jurors heard some of the 911 calls from the february 2008 wreck on indian head highway. prosecutors say the taylor and bullock were racing when they plowed through a crowd of spectators. bullock pleaded guilty last week. taylor has been charged with vehicular manslaughter. more problems could be looming for toyota because it is now investigating problems with the prius hybrid. the national highway traffic safety administration has received about 100 complaints about the cars ' brakes. there are problems in japan, as well. well, this follows the ongoing problems involving gas pedals

we often think of teenagers senning picture and messages but aarp says sexting is catching on with folks of a different generation. our 9 news now lesli foster takes a look at sexting at 60. >> reporter: when it comes to sexting, age is just a number for this 52-year-old debbie nigro. >> the world is becoming ageless and there is no expiration date on sexting. there just isn't. >> reporter: she started to sext a few years ago and says it has become more popular since then. they say it is important not to cross the line of respect and census talk is bear than blatant sexual messages. >> the difference between 20 and 50 and sexting is you need

skies this afternoon and more sunshine through the day on thursday. temperatures if anything a degree or two cooler. by the time we get to friday evening is when we begin the next storm system on friday afternoon in to the evening hours. enjoy the next two because we have big-time changes coming our way. reston we had five inches of snow. perryville, 4.5 inches. bristow 4.3 inches. damascus 6.4. that is one of the highest totals in the metro. annapolis checked in with four and in west virginia, we took the cake with seven inches of snow in moorfield and that was the highest we saw. thank you for the storm reports you sent to wusa9.com. lower 40s but warmer than it has been in many cases where we topped out in 30s for highs. northwest winds phi to ten miles an hour. whatever isn't treated today and whatever doesn't have salt on it will refreeze tonight and

tomorrow morning. watch for that. of course we know that could be a dicey for the morning commute. for our thursday we will be here in the morning. starting in the 20s. partly to mostly cloudy skies in the afternoon. if anything a degree or two cooler than today. a storm passed through overnight. generally the four to six inch totals received the last of it. getting the sunshine to pop up. from here in the mid-atlantic to texas because this next system, see all the rain from the gulf of mexico through central texas and in to the panhandle through new mexico. this is starting to be already a big storm system. it has a lot of moisture with it. this is the one that's heading our way. this is the one that will be here on friday evening. temperatures rising through the mid to upper 30s right now. culpeper, typical cool spot especially when you put snow on the ground. after the storm this morning we see a lot of fog. we are looking at the visible. we measure visibility how far you can see in miles. generally ten miles if it is

bright and clear. you can see forever and then we see visibilities down to less than a quarter mile in some instances. now the fog has lifted. getting breaks in the clouds and so we get a better forecast. lot of sunshine to go through the rest of the afternoon, even for thursday. the next two days we have a little break here. as we go through friday, this forecast shows as soon as friday evening we have the snow back in washington. through the entire area for that matter. in fact, this is showing not only just snow but very heavy snow. i have seen some preliminary indications coming in we would have had several inches on the ground in a short amount of time as we go through friday evening and saturday. this is more and more looking like it will be a potentially very strong storm system with significant snowfall totals coming in. we are looking at temperatures going down in the 20s, lower to mid-20s tomorrow morning. that means a refreeze coming back. tomorrow afternoon we are close
