kicking us when we're down. mother nature, dc metro area zero. >> this second storm putting the pressure and strain on everybody. this is 9news now. >> and tonight the phrase had enough comes to mind as snow is falling yet again across the dc metro area. >> yes. but it seems snow will not be our biggest problem come tomorrow. let's get straight to chief meteorologist topper shutt. it's the wind. >> definitely, derek. the wind will be the signature of this storm, no doubt about it. now, let's start with live doppler. we also have so sleet. we talked about it mixing a little bit. we'll cut down on your snowfall accumulation, especially if you're south and east of 95. here is 95. a lot of sleet and actually freezing rain. this is still snow north and west of town and it will stay north and west of town. it will stay all snow. pretty good bands of snow, too,

in parts of upper montgomery county on the west side of 270. this will put down an inch or two an hour. down towards poolesville. moderate snow once you get past germantown on 270. let's go to the computer and we'll talk about a couple of things. the signature of this storm, it's a dangerous coastal storm. but winds and drifting, that's going to be the signature. we'll get our share of snow. snow tapers off late tomorrow evening. winds will pick up between 20 and 40 miles an hour by late tomorrow afternoon and considerable blowing and drifting is likely. here is our snow potential map. this is on our website at wusa9.com. 6-12 across the immediate metro. less to the south. charles county, st. charles county, calvert county because of the sleet, 4-6 there. the bulls-eye is north of town 12-20 inches. i do not recommend travel between dc, baltimore and philadelphia tomorrow at all. here is some snowfall totals. two inches here.

4.2 in alexandria. seven in smiths burg. arlington has three and fredericksburg has three. we'll break down the snow and talk more about the wind. anita. >> topper, thank you. here is the look at the very latest. the federal government will be closed again tomorrow marking the third day in a row it will be off because of winter weather. vdot has enough salt despite earlier reports of a critical shortage. the maryland state highway association is facing a dwindling supply of salt and said they won't be using as much. and the power companies have been working around the clock trying to get customer's heat and light back on. here is a look at the latest on the outage. according to pepco, they still have 11,000 customers without power. dominion only has 600 and gbe is reporting 205 customers out. the high wind and the heavy wet snow make for a deadly

combination, especially when it comes to the trees. in fact, all day long, crews have been chopping up trees, casualties of the winter weather. brittany morehouse joins us with tree safety tips. brittany. >> reporter: that's right, derek. you look behind me and you see there is a bunch of evergreen trees. they are planted very close together. and they say that's a dangerous combi naltion, especially when -- combination, especially when you are dealing with this kind of weather. you have saturated grounds. limbs that are heavily weighed down by snow and the high winds that we expect tomorrow. that combination could be very dangerous. trees could come falling down. but as i learned today, there are some times ways that you can prevent that. >> the tree emergencies have been exponential really. we're exhausted. >> reporter: for endless hours, crews from capitol tree care have been working. >> everyone has been pushing snow and getting salt, we've been out with four-wheel drives

doing tree emergencies. >> reporter: tree emergencies like this one where trees fell blocking an amount building. a -- apartment building. a certified arborist. he predicts it will only get worse as the winds get heavier. >> do not park under city trees that have large dead limbs. trees that are leaning, trees that have large limbs that are bent heavily, be aware. >> reporter: and be aware of what you can do to help. first, by paying attention. >> this tree to me looks a little precarious. okay. because now it's starting to lean and it's got a tremendous amount of weight right here in the middle on the middle boughs. if you look at the top, you can see the snow has fallen. it came down. it's laying heavy in the middle and it's actually just crushed this branch below. >> reporter: which is where you should focus if you're knocking snow off branches. >> if you're going to start cleaning your evergreens off, do all you can to clean them at the bottom knowing that the weight will soon fall from the top because of the sun. >> reporter: most of all, watch

out for this. >> trees on wires. if you lose some of these limbs and they grab these wires, they can actually pull them down. >> reporter: now, if you spot that kind of situation, you're going to have to call a tree specialist, not the power company, and stay clear so even if you can prevent that tree from coming down, you dpoe the signs so you -- know the signs so you can get away from those. reporting live in northwest, brittany morehouse 9news now and wusa9.com. >> great examples to take a look at. thank you, brittany. an update now on metro of the transit agency will have limited underground service for tomorrow. it will open at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. officials say they're going to be working to clear the tracks quickly in hopes of resuming some above ground service as well. metro bus and metro access will not be running at all on wednesday. most airlines have cancelled flights for tomorrow at dulles, reagan national and bwi. today activity stopped around 5:00 a.m. if you are planning on flying out the rest of the week, make sure to call ahead and check with your airline before you

head out to the airport. we have links to all three on our website wusa9.com. and tonight's weather is forcing several counties to cancel school for the rest of the week. that includes loudoun, anne arundel, frederick, montgomery, prince george's county. you can see all of them at the bottom of your screen. and families will need to feed their children two meals a day. the school didn't have any answer for the needy family. so surae chinn went out to find one. she joins us with a story you'll see only on 9news. >> reporter: schools provide not only free lunches but breakfast and snacks throughout the day. all kinds of goodies such as cereal, juice boxes and also fruit. plenty of fruit. i talked with one family who is down on their luck because they lost power in their home. until the red cross stepped in

and changed their luck. >> pizza. >> cookies. >> reporter: a hot nutritious meal is what little 5-year-old jaylanis ad a accustomed to at school. >> it's less of a headache for me having to send him for lunch. the free program is a big stress reliever for me with my income being so low. >> reporter: but with school out for the rest of the week, free hot lunches were not part of the program. >> how cold was it outside? that's how cold it was in our house. >> reporter: especially when jessica and her two sons had no place to go for days after losing power to their montgomery county home during the superstorm on saturday. >> so we were without heat for three days before we came here yesterday. >> reporter: richard montgomery high school e become their home away from home. >> we all get a hot meal and we

have a place to sleep and all that good stuff. >> reporter: mom says she wouldn't let her children go hungry, and now they won't as long as they stay at the red cross shelter through the duration of the latest storm. >> we are here for the people, and that's what we do. >> one thing we don't have to worry about is food. >> reporter: there are more than 30 million children who take advantage of the free lunches across the country. shelters are set up all across the region in montgomery and fairfax county. a lot of times the red cross is here. you can see them right now organizing. and a lot of times they have food and hot meals. but here in alexandria, if you don't come to the shelters, you can call this number on your screen. it's 703-746-4488 and it's staffed 24 hours a day. in alexandria, surae chinn for 9news now. >> surae, thank you. now, if you've lost power and want to make sure the food you bought for the storm stays safe, as long as it's less than

of braking power on rough roads and slick spots. the state senate in new york has passed a resolution opposing any terrorist trials in new york city. the resolution urges the justice department to move any 9/11 trials back to military trib nalz. the white house is looking for another civilian site for a 9/11 trial originally set for manhattan. in wyoming, a billboard is sparking debate. the sign has a simple message, miss me yet. business owners who paid for the sign want to say anonymous. and closer to home, metro has just what caused a blue line train to mix up in a cable forcing passengers to be evacuated. this happened around 4:30 in the morning. nobody was hurt. metro says a long communications cable somehow wrapped around the wheels of that train car. dc police are asking for

your help to help catch a bank robber. they believe this is the man that robbed the bank of georgetown. it happened last tuesday morning and police are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. and the dc police also need your help to find this man. he is 57-year-old robert blake of northwest and he has been missing ever since january 31st. that's two sundays ago. police say blake is in need of medication and he might appear to be disoriented. if you think you've seen him, contact the dc police. and friendly snowball fights are one thing, but before you start tossing snow balls, consider this. tonight two students at james madison university are facing felony charges. police in harrisonburg says the students threw snowball at a city snowplow and unmarked police car. bottom line, any object thrown at a vehicle can lead to a felony charge. dominion says one of the crews working hard to restore power made a big mistake that ended with a house catching

fire. the fire burned through the basement and first floor in arlington on sunday. a dominion spokesperson says the crew got the wires crossed sending electricity down what should be an unenergized line and into the home. the company says it was a rare and isolated incident and they are now working to help the homeowners. last minute house calls ahead of the snow. that's what rn maggie frost was doing today checking in on some of her most fragile patients to make sure they stay in stable condition. >> these people may not be able to go out for a couple of days. and making sure they have their medicines to they don't end up back into the hospital is really important. >> i have a wound that she's treating right now. i have an amputation actually and i'm learning to walk all over again. >> that visiting nurse checks for infection and changes the dressing and insures her diabetes is under good control. she says anyone with a chronic

medical condition should have an emergency plan and people to contact in case of a crisis during the storm. meantime, the medical community is putting out a call for more volunteers with four-wheel drives. the national kidney foundation needs help giving dialysis patients a ride. many rely on metro access to get to their appointments. it's been shut down. and dialysis centers say some patients in dc have missed two sessions already. also, doctors community hospital in principals george county needs help transporting staff members to and from the hospital. we're also hearing holy cross hospital still needs volunteers late tonight and tomorrow. if you can help any of these folks, go to wusa9.com and click on this story under headlines. and let's check in with topper on our big story of the night. of course the storm moving in. >> yep. >> the winds all set to howl at us tomorrow morning, top. >> yes. that's going to be the signature. i think we're going to look back on this and say the winds and the drifting. that's what i remember. dangerous coastal storm. be prepared to lose electricity.

you're fine tonight. winds just 10-15. but tomorrow morning, you're going to go 15-25 and then by afternoon tomorrow 20-40 miles an hour with higher gusts. and that is just not something we need. here is a look at our storm potential map. it's on our website at wusa9.com. 6-12 across the metro area. that includes montgomery koun tie, the district -- county, the district, prince william. down to the south where it's mixing and has been mixing, 4-6. southern charles county, calvert county. and further south 2-4. i think you're going to run out of moisture by the time the cold air gets there. the weekend is flanking me. forecast in detail overnight. snow. heavy at times. a mix dc south and east. essentially right around i95. 4-8 inches overnight. low temperatures 24-30. and winds northeasterly at about 10 to 15. snowfall break down. 4-8 overnight. 2-4 in the morning. and then 1-2 in the afternoon. a total of about 4-14.

and that covers charles county with the four and howard county with the 14. let me show you live doppler 9000. and we'll kind of show you where the break down is. essentially i95. if you go south and east of that, you're looking at a little bit of sleet and maybe even some freezing rain. the good news is, that won't drift. the bad news is, if we get too much of a period of it, a prolonged period of it, then it will start to collect on the trees. so a very fine line we're dancing. you go up 270, you're going to see patches of heavy snow and even moderate snow. now, on the flip side of that, if you go east or south of i95, you're going to get some sleet and some freezing rain around clinton as you go down route five. also upper marlboro, dunkirk, north beach. this will go back to snow gradually as we go through the nighttime hours. another couple of hours it looks like for around clinton and upper marlboro. then 1:00 you should go back to snow. let's go back to the computer. here is some of the amounts

already. 2.5 inches in rockville. three inches in falls church. three inches in roundville. two inches in ma nas sit and three inches in -- manassas and three inches in centreville. tomorrow morning windy and cold. temps 20-30. and there are the winds northwest at 15-25 and gusty. by the afternoon, not that much snow. maybe we dabble another inch or two out. that's about it. highs near 30. look at the wind northwesterly at 20-40 miles an hour and gusty and that is the problem. let me look at the satellite picture, radar combined. this is what is left of the first storm, the midwest storm. and now we see the coastal storm taking over just off the coast of north carolina. and as that intensifies and moves northward, our heaviest bands of snow will be later on tonight in the wee hours of the morning. probably tapering off by mid-morning. although it will still snow with this wraparound as we get into the afternoon, and that's when the winds will really, really pick up and that's what we're
