you're watching 9news now's continuous storm coverage. >> welcome back. believe it or not, that is our weather terrace. you can hardly see the furniture. we are talking 22, 23 inches of snow on the terrace, and the good news is, light snow is all that is left here in northwest. let me start with the big picture, we'll go to the computer and this is going to

show you the whole storm. show you the breath of the storm. it's an incredible storm and to have two storms of such intensity on such close proximity, it's unusual. look at the moisture being thrown into pennsylvania, new jersey, the good news is, the back edge is finally lifting out to the north and to the east, as the storm lifts out to the north and to the east. all be it on the slow side. there are still pockets of heavy snow. we are going to go up into parts of montgomery county and howard county. is this moderate snow, not quite as heavy as the snow we had earlier. as you go out 97, up towards sunshine, this is sunshine where 97 and new hampshire avenue intersect. there's heavy snow in clarksville. up from 95, and also as you go east on 108, some pretty heavy snow as you move out of ashton, go east toward baltimore and columbia. so that is a pretty good area of snow at this hour.

we are also going to move down to the south. don't want to forget our friends down to the south. you made up great grounds after your lull in the storm last night. very heavy snow still in southern sections of prince georges county, and that moves down toward hughsville, as you go down route 5 and laplata. very heavy snow around route 6, and also to the northeast of route 6. so, we aren't done yet, but we are seeing some improvement. let's see how the roads are, we had a live shot a minute ago and a plow. i was happy about that. what's going on? >> plows are angels to most of us out there, for sure. we love to see that and hear those coming around in our area. but of course, not just the snow blocking the travel lanes, but also debris due to that howling wind, topper is talking about. that spot to be right now is route 15 in frederick county here closed in all directions here. south of jefferson street. detours for you. you can take 355 to 40 to get

back to i-270. let's get you back. we see one lonely car going past this stretch here. the warning is out from d dot to stay off the roadways both on cars and on foot. pedestrians are avoiding, as you can see, the sidewalks that are not plowed here, being on the roadways, a very dangerous mix. we have a warning if you are going to be on the bay bridge, watch out for snow removal blocking some of the lanes and fog and wind warnings also in effect. guys, back to you. >> snow is slowly coming to an end, those winds are picking up. here's the latest storm safety alert. >> today's storm makes this the snowiest winter ever on record in washington, d.c. and the hazardous weather counties force many jurisdictions in maryland and virginia to pull their plows off the road, many of them are back on the streets now. >> both virginia governor, and martin o'malley are urging people to stay inside and off the roads because of extremely

dangerous conditions. and dc police are using four- wheel drive vehicles, humvees from the dc national guard and other means to maneuver around the snow covered city. >> let's take a live look of conditions around the beltway in prince georges county. this is beau ximmer, who is in forestville, maryland, keeping an eye on the roads in prince georges county from the county operation center. so us the view. >> well, hey there. these winds out here seem relentless. the winds haven't died down at all. the snow is not quite as heavy as it was, but with this wind, it keeps hitting you in the face and it just doesn't feel all that great. we were showing you some of the pictures earlier, some of the trucks at the department of public works here in maryland. they have these covered up. they've had some problems, some of the equipment has broken down here in maryland, but what trucks they do have operational are out on the roads, doing their best, trying to clear

those major thorough fares. don't expect a miracle, don't expect any black top here in the next couple of days, but they are going to do their best to keep those major thorough fairs clear. their plea to the public, stay off the roads if you possibly can. >> i know folks get ansi. there is a state of emergency in effect, where folks aren't supposed to be out on the roadways anyway. stay home, enjoy your family, enjoy your friends. please don't drive. >> and, obviously, still cloudy conditions out here in maryland. we haven't seen the sun at all today. it hasn't stopped snowing once since we have been out here. we can tell you as the sun goes down and the conditions get a little darker, this snow, if it keeps blowing around is going to make visibility more difficult, so even more reason to stay off the roads if at all

possible. reporting live, 9news now. >> all right, thanks so much. let's take a look at the beltway right now. this is the capital beltway in prince georges county. this is video shot earlier when conditions were worse. near whiteout, and you look at the signs there. blizzard conditions, stay off the road. blizzard conditions, stay off the road. we were talking to transportation officials, saying it's the first time they can remember putting up signs that basically say, it's so bad, please stay off the road and again, plows had to stop some of their work earlier because of the winds. they have resumed it. they want motorists to stay out of the way so they can clear the roads as quickly as possible. >> they stayed off the roads, but they didn't stay out of dupont circle, it was the great snowball fight. today's challenge was as a north, south rematch. there was a big snowball fight last weekend. that one has the distinction of being the largest snowball

storm safety coverage continues for you, forestville, in prince georges county, again, the snow has stopped in a large part of our area, but the winds continue, i want to remind you, we just gotten in that anarundel county government offices will be closed. offices will be closed tomorrow. >> in tonight's consumer alert, another recall on drop- side cribs. the safety commission announced a recall of all child designs drop-side cribs. urges parents and care givers to stop using them immediately because the drop side cribs pose strangulation and suffocation hazards. three infants were suffocated when they became suffocated between the crib mattress and the drop side. you should not attempt to fix these cribs and to find an alternative safe sleep environment for your baby. we have more on the generation 2 worldwide recall on our

website, wusa9.com, just click on living smart. no tonight's health alert, new research finds many women have a lot to learn when it comes to heart disease. the survey on behalf of the american heart association is called go red for women and it shows almost half of those polled didn't know the symptoms of heart disease or that it is the number one killer of women as well as men. >> the classic symptoms of a heart attack are heaviness in the chest, shortness of breath, sweating, pain radiating to the jaw or down both arms. >> there are other less obvious signs. women are the ones more likely to have a typical heart attack symptoms without the chest pain. something to remember. topper. i'm meteorologist, topper shutt, snowing again a little bit, although it's hard to tell what is falling and what is blowing around.

welcome back for our storm safety alert coverage. throughout the day, we have been giving you a live look at roadways throughout the region. this is route 50, again, the snow has subsided, but high winds are expected through the evening. topper has the latest on today's bliss blizzard coming up in a few minutes. >> virginia rescue workers are coping in the storm after losing so much in the last one. >> dispatched from a make- shift fire station of tents tucked inside a hall. fairfax county fireman, brave a blizzard to respond to a natural gas leak.

a call that was quickly resolved. >> it's not the normal conditions we usually have. we lost a lot of the, i guess, the perks of station lights. >> to say the least. >> we have all of our shifts from two stations. we have their gear. >> this is the makeshift bunk room for men and women, a duty room, all in a location that resembles a movie set. >> it took 24 hours to get everybody in the mind set of the action plan we have here. >> and with equipment parked outside. constant plowing and tire chain adjustment is the new reality for this shift from companies 8 and 10. >> a lot of good lessons we brought back from the haiti deployment. the way we set up our operations here, directly with the way we do things with the use of our team. >> these firefighters better get used to this situation, they are going to be here for at least a month. while repairs are made at

bailey's cross roads. in virginia, craig, 9news now. >> all right, top, good to see the snow stopping in so many areas. >> you folks north and east of town, when is it going to stop? especially in howard county. let's show yo u what it looked like earlier this morning driving around georgetown, it was not pretty. there are times when visibility really was zero. i drove down wisconsin and there were times, where am i? you become disoriented pretty fast. not too many people were on the road, just the bank on the corner of m and wisconsin. okay, let's go to doppler and i want to show you where it has stopped snowing and where it is still snowing a little bit. we are getting some pretty good returns to the east, still in howard county and parts of eastern montgomery county. this is heavy snow, we go up toward clarksville, brookville, passed alany, off of georgia

avenue, route 97, and up 650, which is new hampshire avenue. that is very heavy snow. now we also have some pretty heavy snow down to the south and to the east. we'll go into parts of prince georges county. this is a pretty good band of snow "upper" marl borrow and shady side and deal. it's not quite as heavy as it was when we showed you the same view about 30 minutes ago. still heavy snow at the moderate snow. probably 3/4 of an inch per hour. that is no slouch right now. the back edge of the precipitation is steadily and slowly moving off to the north and to the east. a storm pulls away north and east, the bands are working its way around counterclock wise as the storm with the circulation is pushing gobs of moisture on shore from the atlantic ocean. it will take longer, but you folks in front royal, you're in good shape here. >> next three days, you will be cold, but dry.

mid 30s tomorrow. still windy tomorrow, maybe not 40-mile per hour winds, nice on friday. temperatures in the mid to upper 30s. and on saturday, watch the system to the south. may throw a few clouds our way. right now, we are going to keep it dry. pretty cold. high temperatures in the low 30s. tonight, partial clearing. windy and cold. windchills, 5 below to 5 above. low temperatures 15 to 25, winds northwesterly at 15 to 30 and gusty. good thing all the snow, the 30 inches of snow had melted and had crust on it, or we would have all kinds of snow blowing around today. maryland side, until 10:00 p.m. virginia side of the river until 7:00 p.m., and on the west side of the eastern continental divide, they go until 7:00 a.m. new totals for you. annapolis, 12 inches. gaithersburg, 11 1/2. look at old town, alexandria,

10 1/2 inches. and leaseburg, 12.5 inches of snow. all right, storm potential. 6 to 12 metro. north, you find 12 to 24. 1 to 2 feet in the panhandle along the pa, maryland border and up into north eastern, maryland, which was going to be the bulls eye. tomorrow, partly cloudy, windy, and cold. winds are still up there northwesterly at 15 to 25 and gusty. by afternoon, partly cloudy and cold. winds northwesterly. they are coming down a little bit. it's a good thing. now in terms of the big picture, look at this storm system. it is just incredible. wrapped down, watch it wrap around these moisture bands from the northeast off to the southwest. that is pretty impressive. again, we commented on this all day. i have never seen heavy snow or moderate snow reported at national, five consecutive hours with a northwest wind. that is a drying wind. that is extremely unusual. checklists, you got your storm drains and your gutters, your

downspouts. you got the window wells and from the furnace exhaust. with snow this deep and with the winds that strong, they may be over the intake and the outtake of the exhaust. you don't want that to happen. your dryer vent and heat pump, got to do that. winds gusting to 31 miles per hour at national. temperatures with winds factored in. windchill is 11 degrees. 35 tomorrow, still windy. 37 on friday. saturday, we are in the low 30s. we rebound a little bit. mid 30s on sunday. that is seasonally very cold for us. a clipper comes at us monday afternoon and monday night. light snow possible. clippers are not our big snow makers, but that would be insult to injury and in the upper 30s on wednesday. >> you say clippers break your heart, so we'll just be heartbroken. >> this winter my heart is in good shape. >> we are talk about go red

you're looking at a live shot of union station. could be a postcard there that says don't you wish you were here? not. topper has the latest on blizzards coming up in just a bit. >> i'm thinking the caribbean right about now, lesli. let's talk to lindsey who has been following a barn collapse and how it affected livestock in frederick, maryland. actually had some rescues out there, lindsey. >> the woods burro pike, just down the street is a farm and that is where the barn collapsed. there were 50 dairy cows inside the barn when it collapsed. several were stuck. fire crews were told not to go, that conditions were too dangerous. but they insisted on helping. >> we arrived on scene, we had about 50 cows trapped. five only them were pinned under stuff. >> they cut through debris to free the cows. >> the snow on the building

brought the roof down. it trapped all the cows. >> we were there as the last one made it out. all the cows survived. >> you can walk away from a form that is an active farm and their animals and they are able to continue their business, you've had a good day. >> we appreciate any help we can get. we didn't want to lose any animals, they are precious to us. >> family is working to get them out of the blizzard. >> we are going to have them up there, where we have them to milk and then after that, we'll block this section off and they'll have other building that they can get into. >> they are worried other structures on their 500 acre farm could also collapse. >> we shoveled one off yesterday, good thing we did, or we would have a few horses and our 4h livestock, it's a job shoveling them off. it was 4-foot deep. >> we got it on the roof and
