street bridge. and finally 95 northbound in virginia from dumfries to the mixing bowl, all clear. andrea? >> thank you. metro riders will be digging for an extra dime this morning after a temporary fare increase took affect yesterday. kristin fisher is live from the information center with more. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning. that's how much more it will cost you to ride the metro this morning, ten cents. this fare hike means the regular base fare for metro rail, metro bus and metro access will jump ten cents from 1.65 to 1.75. most regular commuters can expect to see the value of their smart can trip card decline faster than normal. a phi cents hike will be applied to the rate for senior citizens and people with disabilities. the goal is to reduce a 5 # $40

million budget short fall. it is expected to raise $10 million over the next four months and metro's board of directors approved it last january, marking the first time metro imposed a temporary rate hike on customers in order to close a budget gap. before you get too excited, remember metro's board of directors is considering a bigger fare increase to close a bigger budget gap in 201. the national transportation safety board is investigating what caused a deadly plane crash in edgewater, maryland. the pilot was returning to lee airport when his aircraft went down along warehouse creek lane. the plane burst in to flames melting the siding of the closest home. the pilot 53-year-old joseph kelly iii of annapolis died. he was the only one on board. rescue crews are searching for dozens of people trapped in

chile. the quake flattened apartment buildings. 700 people are confirmed dead in the quake which registered 8.8. soldiers arrived in an effort to stop widespread looting after first saying they would not need international help, chile's president says teams from other countries are needed to relieve their weary rescuers. it wasn't just the earthquake that devastated the nation. while tsunamis didn't strike elsewhere it destroyed some of chile's coastal towns. some are sleeping outdoors since their homes have been washed away ♪ [ music ] closer to home, parishioners at the lady of lords catholic church celebrated a special mass for chile yesterday. many had family members affected by the quake. coming up, time for the first "living $mart" consumer report of the morning.

jessica doyle has a preview of the day ahead on wall street. >> reporter: good morning. we all can say happy march. wall street is hoping to get more of what we had for february. there's also going to be a lot of news on the job front with a report on layoffs. the dow starts at 10325 after climbing 4 points on friday. the nasdaq also added 4 points and the s&p 500 rose by a point. wall street posted more gains for the month of february. the dow up 3% with a rally slowing near the end of the month. the nasdaq gained 4%. and s&p up 2.9 for february. the white house is working on plans to protect american's retirement savings. it wants to do it by eliminating conflicts of interest for advisers who manage those accounts. the administration estimates the protections would affect 15

welcome back. 50 westbound from the bay bridge bowie to the beltway. no problems to start the morning so far. more traffic and weather coming up. in the news now at 9 after the hour, the mother of two north carolina children who died in a house fire now faces criminal charges because police say she left them home alone. four children were home alone when a kerosene heater started the fire. the older children, ages 7 and 4 escaped. two toddlers died. four men are in the custody of the border patrol but lucky to be alive after they were spotted clinging to a tree. authorities believe they are

illegal immigrants who got caught up in the river. they have summerier -- injuries but are expected to recover. the white house has a new secretary, julianna smoot. she worked as chief of staff to rod kirk. she replaces des'ree rogers who is returning to the private sector. she came under scrutiny after a couple crashed the state dinner without an invitation. doctors find a not so harmless side affect to smoking marijuana. and it will take longer to recover from the storm that brought us a lot of wind. we are dealing with last weak's storm. another storm on the horizon. i will let you know how close it will come. 9 news now returns in just a leave hair healthy. s selsun blue. got a clue? get the blue.

if this storm wasn't there, this would have a better chance of coming toward us. we might be on the warm side or see appreciable snows. the way it is looking now with computer modeling it shows it well. follow the storm as we come in on monday evening across the south n. to tuesday we will see a wind up the coast here and start to crank to our east here by wednesday morning with low pressure looks like east of norfolk. south and east of town by wednesday morning, a better chance of light snow than north and west. this looks like it will miss us. just to the south and east. a little bit of snow will be possible tuesday in to wednesday morning. we may even some some snow showers ring never to thursday morning the way things are going. the seven-day forecast, temperatures today around 50 with the breeze. a little rain or snow to start tuesday evening. lighter snows i believe on wednesday opposed to the heavy stuff. flurries or snow showers in to thursday morning. we get it out of here. and look at next weekend,

he is taking anti-inflammatory medication to relieve den don'titis in his left knee and say he should eat better to lower his cholesterol but other than that he is in excellent health. a study finds smoking marijuana isn't as harmless as many think. researchers looked at 3,000 adults that smoked pot for six years they were twice as likely to have a serious mental health disorder than people who aren't regular marijuana users. allergies to meat maybe more common than thought. a carbohydrate in meat may be the cause of an fill lactics. it is based on 60 patients with unexplained allergic reactions. plus, an old nemesis of the capitals fans strikes again in

good morning. i'm sara walsh with a quick look at the morning sports. when chris sam -- samuels went down with a neck injury it was the end of the year for him and he was told closure on his pro bowl career is likely to happen this week. samuels hold a press conference on thursday. he suffers from spinal steno sis, a narrowing of the spine and resuming his career would be difficult an potentially dangerous. the redskins have so far declined to comment. the 2010 olympics are in the book and crosby is yet to write another chapter why they don't like the u.s. 1-0 canada. the puck around the neck. the wrister past miller and northern neighbors are up 2-0.

is building at 123 all the way up to lorton. we will keep our eye on that and see how that goes this morning. metro riders will be digging for an extra dime after a temporary fare increase took affect yesterday. 9 news now reporter kristin fisher is at the tenley town metro station with more -- rather in our information center with more. >> we're here in the information center now. ten cents, it may not sound like a lot but it is important because it could set a precedent for future hikes down the road. the purpose of the fare increase is to reduce the $40 million budget short fall. it is expected to raise $10 million over the next four months. they approved it last january marking the first time metro imposed a temporary fare increase on passengers. it ends june 26th but keep in mind the board of directors is considering a bigger fare

increase to close a bigger gap in 2011. that's a ways away but here's what you need to know today. if you plan to ride metro this morning the regular base fare for metro rail, metro bus and metro access jumped ten cents. on the rail it jumped from 1.65 to 1.75. most regular commuters can expect to see the value of their smart trip cards decline 20 cents a day faster than normal. no discount on distance traveled or time of the day. the maximum fare is up from 4.50 to 4.60. for most people it will be a ten cents increase starting yesterday and even the cents doesn't sound like a lot but again, you are looking for more fare increases by the end of the year. >> when you add it up it does amount to a lot. thank you. metro isn't the only transit agency raising rates

this week. montgomery county's ride on bus is hiking fares today. fares for seniors went up five cents. this morning police are a suspect in custody in an overnight crash which four pedestrians were hit. the wreck happened on university boulevard in chill , maryland just before 3:00 this morning that's just across the montgomery county line. police say a man intentionally struck the victim and was involved in a domestic dispute with at least one of them. officers arrested him a short time later. two victims were taken to the hospital for treatment but are expected to recover. the other two were not seriously hurt. fewer teens are getting behind the wheel according to federal data which shows only a third of eligible 16-year-olds got their licenses in 2008. that is down from almost 45% 20 years ago. some teens say they just don't

want the responsibility. arlington, virginia driving strucker says new regulations maybe a factor for the decline. >> the whole process, you know, kind of complicated for a 16- year-old student. when we go over the laws and regulations you can see them going what is going on? back in 2005 we had 96 students attempt to get their license. now we get 40 to 45 students. >> how come you will wait? >> because i never tried driving before and i'm scared i might crash. >> reporter: right now 47 states prevent teens from driving at night. 44 states limit the number of passengers allowed in the car with a teen driver. today, a jury resumes deliberation class the accokeek racing trial. taylor is accused of being the second driver in an illegal street race that caused the deaths of eight people two years ago. taylor confessed to being

involved in the race initially but his attorney says it was coerced. prosecutors say video of the race captured taylor's vehicle racing at speeds exceeding 100 miles an hour. bullock maybe sentenced today. he is faces 15 years in prison. if taylor is convicted he could get up to 80 years in prison. a woman accused of killing a mother and her young son has a court hearing scheduled for today. wilson is charged with first- degree murder. police say wilson stabbed her husbands ex-wife and that couple's 7-year-old son paul because she was jealous over their relationship with her husband. they are investigating whether wilson was a mail order bride and whether she was in the country illegally. maryland's former governor is criticizing martin o'malley for traveling to iraq. on his radio show he said that o'malley should not have made the trip during the legislative session. he has not decided to run for

nation latin america tour. she will stop in the capital city of santiago to show america's support for the rescue and recovery mission. after initially turning down foreign aid, the president appealed for international help on sunday. along with food and water, field hospitals and temporary bridges top the list of needs. some areas were left devastated either by the monster quake or frightening tsunamis that followed. the president is calling it a catastrophe of unthinkable magnitude and says that recovery will take a massive effort. for many running low on food and water, the fear is while the disaster may be over the real crisis will set in. tara mergener , cbs news, washington. >> some people along the west coast will be cleaning up from floods today. big waves may have attracted some in california but some residents had sea water coming in to their homes and in to a

our friends in the shenandoah valley. temperature at national 38. the west northwest wind at ten makes ill feel like 31 this morning and the dew point in the 20s. relative humidity is 64%. the cold air is around across the northern plains in to minneapolis. but we seeing some moderation. 50sin the southwest. 40s texas, new orleans, to memphis and even miami down to 50. this big storm, we are watching this. a lot more concerned if it was earlier in the season and. but this is impressive, well defined. a lot of energy and it will move east and northeast. but with we have this guy spinning here blocking and that is just enough that i believe we will be safe from it. put the computer in motion. you will see the moisture in the northeast. as we go through monday, no real problems. clouds increase tomorrow. we will see them thicken up. here's the system from texas coming up from the northeast, south and east of us by

wednesday morning. you notice that, just south and east. maybe areas in the middle peninsula or the delmarva may see a better chance of snow than around here. that's why i'm not thinking we will see that much. seven-day forecast shows we have temperatures by wednesday with snow showers or light snow upper 30s. could be an early snow shower on thursday. and next weekend partly to mostly sunny. highs around 50 give or take a couple of degrees. we toss it over to chris chris for traffic. minor incident southbound on the bw parkway at annapolis road just inside the beltway. we have a report of an accident here. stay to the left right now. not sure what lane it is blocking. we will keep you up-to-date on that. we are seeing it move well germantown road to the split. beltway in virginia. good news for drivers as we go to the graphics. earlier disabled at 123 cleared as well as a disabled at route
