fixes to the health care bill took an up expecnexpected turn senate. nancy cordes has the latest. >> reporter: that's right, the senate was voting all night long and into the wee hours of this morning as senate democrats try to wrap up this reconciliation bill, the smaller package of fixes before they head home for recess. the senate democrats managed to strike down every single republican amendment keeping the bill largely intact so it would go back to the house for a vote, but it's expected to be fairly routine. for democrats there, has been another problem, threats that they've been getting since they voted yes for health care. >> you and your family are scum. >> we think you're a devil. >> i hope you die. >> reporter: these are just a sampling of the menacing voice mails bart stupak received after agreeing to rote fvote for the .

at least ten democrats have received violent threats. windows were smashed at the offices of gabrielle g ichifford louise slaughter. >> this kind of violence has no place in american life. >> reporter: tea party activists urged opponents to go to the congressman's home to express their displeasure with his yes vote. they even posted an address online, but the home belonged to the congressman's brother. the gas line was cut there and police are now investigating. >> i don't position anybody's seen this level of anger for quite a long time. we saw an anger on the left at president obama and the republican congress especially around the war in iraq, but nothing to this level. >> reporter: democrats accuse republicans of stoking the anger. they point to sarah palin's facebook page which uses cross

hairs to denote districts where vulnerable democrats voted for health care reform. don't retreat, instead, reload, palin told fellow conservatives on twitter. republican house leader john boehner has put out a paper statement denouncing some of these violent statements, but democrats want him to do more. they say republicans need to speak out to try to diffuse some of this anger. >> nancy, thank you. also on the hill this morning is the number two house democrat majority leader steny hoyer of maryland. good morning to you. >> good morning. good to be with you. >> how seriously are your colleagues taking these threats? >> i think they're taking them very seriously. as you heard, some of the threats are very serious and a threat of bodily harm to members. i think it's appropriate that each one of us take this seriously. whether we've had threats made against us or not, clearly the

capital police and the fbi are taking them seriously and investigating. the bottom line is we need to be very careful in public life that our rhetoric does not turn to insigcitement of violence or violent acts. we have disagreements, sometimes strongly held beliefs differ, but at the core is that we to so several lly and peacefully and resolve our definites throu dif democratic means. >> some republicans have played this down saying it comes with the territory when you make a controversial decision, this is par for the course. do you agree with that point? >> well, no, i don't think it's par for the course. we've had a lot of serious disagreements on tax bills, on war and peace, and other matters. and i haven't seen the level of, frankly, threats or anger or threatening of violent acts that

i've seen recently. i think in part it's because the rhetoric that has been utilized with respect to this bill is far beyond i think la git maegitima debate. and people who are less constrained, less aware of the fact that debate can get hot, but it shouldn't get violent, but that they lead to a conclusion beyond what perhaps the speaker meant to imply. >> so what you would you leike o see from the republican leadership in. >> i think it's not just the republican leadership. i think all of us in leadership need to make it very clear to the american public, very few of which i think are participating in such acts on either side, we need to make it very clear that that's unacceptable in a democracy. in a democracy, we debate, we hold feelings strongly, and then we vote. dick agagephart used to say democracy is a suction tugs for

war. and what he meant is we he roof solve things not at the point of a gun, but through civil democratic means to reach consensus. and aboif we don't do that, we l deinvolve into a society that we won't like. >> the senate has sent back these fixes to the bill that became law, sent help bathem ba the house. will your colleagues approve these and when will it be on the president's desk? >> these are very technical rulings. the amendments that were offered have been rejected and i expect to get this bill back from the senate sometime later this afternoon and i would expect a couple of hours there after, we will have the bill on the floor for final passage and it will pass the house and be sent to the president. >> congressman steny hoyer, thank you so much. now a bombshell report on

the roman catholic sex abuse scandal. attorneys for a group of victims have released documents that show pope benedict and other top vatican officials knew about one abusive priest in milwaukee and did nothing. cbs news correspondent allen pizzey is in rome with the developing story. >> reporter: the newest abuse allegations come from documents in a lawsuit over a priest in wisconsin who abused between 150 and 200 children at a school for the de aechltaf over a period o years often during confession. they are being laid at the pete of pope benedict xvi almost literally. an organization staged a small it demonstration in front of st. pet peter's square this morning. >> we're here in st. peter's as survivors, all of us are members of s.n.a.p., and we were sexually abused as children. >> reporter: the section of the vatican that deals with such issues was headed at the time of

the abuse by pope benedict, then known as cardinal joseph rat zinger. the victims charge that he initially did not respond to letters from the diocese in wisconsin and instead of dealing with the offender, the vatican fought efforts by bishops to oust the predator in order to avoid a scandal. the priest, father lawrence murphy, was never reported to law enforcement, was transferred to another diocese and even wrote a letter asking for help to live out his old age in peace. neither cannon law nor the vatican guidelines on abuse prohibit chrnl officials from reporting abuse to civil authorities. in a letter about the scandal, pope benedict said there was a misplaced concern for the choice. he also said that priests must, quote, answer for their sinful and criminal acts before god and before properly constituted tribunals. the abuse victims who demonstrated here today say that the strat can is still withholding evidence that it got from the united states.

they want that evidence released. words they say aren't enough. they want some action. harry? >> allen pizzey in rome. thank you very much. now for the economy. there's good news for homeowners. bank of america has agreed to a $3 billion plan for its most troubled borrowers that could forgive up to 30% of their total mortgage balance. that's homeowners have to owe more than 120% of what their home is now worth. that's mortgages underwater. about 45,000 homeowners are expected to qualify. and we want to bring in jill schlesinger of cbs "moneywatch".com to see what it all means. good morning. this is big news for a lot of people. who exactly is impacted? >> remember that bank of america bought countrywide mortgage, so these are countrywide mortgages. so the folks that are available are the ones that had really the riskiest mortgages, subprime, the ones who really had sketchy credit. the people who had option

a.r.m.s, those are the folks that they're concentrating on. great progress. 45,000 home openers, but they have got 1.2 million loans that are in default right now. so it's a small fraction of the total. >> so good news for some people. a lot of these loans are in california, which is one say the hi of the states highly impacted. what do the borrowers get exactly? >> let's say you have a 250 houd mortgage. your house is worth $200,000. so the bank will say $50,000 we'll lop off what you owe. we'll put that $50,000 in a special account. for the next five year, we will forgive $10,000 a year and as long as you make your payments. but remember, this is just a pilot program. it's not for everyone. and i also should mention it's by invitation only. the bank must contact you you. you can't go call the bank. >> a lot of people out there

saying, oh, sorry. this is not necessarily out of the largess of this corporation because it originates from a turn general. >> remember martha coakley? she had waged a lawsuit against another mortgage lender and won. so this was going to be the next step was that she was going to potentially -- basically say i'm going to sue countrywide mortgage and now in order to avoid that, they come out and they do this program. by the way, a lot of other lenders had started looking at this. and it's not a broad based program. it's not faelaffecting governme loans. this is the way that experts believe the foreclosure problem will be abated ultimately. >> all right. we want to get more news right now. >> we turn our attention to the news desk where betty nguyen is standing by. good morning.

well, social security has reached a tipping point. this year for the first time, social security will pay out more than it receives in payroll taxes. that was expected to happen until 2016. the change will have no affect, though, on benefits according to the congressional budget office. the "new york times" reports thatpayments have risen because of unemployment and taking benefits sooner than planned. be prepared for eye popping theater price hikes. many theaters are raising ticket prices by 20% or more starting tomorrow. some movie goers here in new york get this will pay nearly 20 bucksimax movies. on to sarah palin. now it is reported that she has landed her own tv reality show. whit johnson has more now on alaska's former governor. good morning, whit. >> reporter: good morning.

another nice crowd out on the plaza and a beautiful spring day. we'll be out there in a little while to say hi to everybody. >> panther pride. >> welcome back to "the early show." >> i've been guilty of this, a lot of people don't hesitate to post on facebook or twitter what they're doing. you might not want it to do that when you hear the story we have coming up. a couple goes out for a concert and when they get home, they realize their house has been burglarized. they watch surveillance video and they think they recognize would not one the burglars as a guy who friended them on facebook. so we'll have an exclusive

interview with keri and kurt. they did not write out on facebook that they were going out of up to for this interview. also ahead, a possible crack done on tanning beds. the fdas has always said inside tanning is safe. you now it's considering new rules based on research showing connection to skin cancer. but first the ongoing battle of the video showing the death of the trainer killed by a whale at seaworld. it's now at the center of a very public court case. kelly cobiella has the latest. >> reporter: dawn brancheau's family sat quietly wednesday as circuit court judge dlab rated whether the security court tapes and potentials of brancheau's death should be released. seaworld, brancheau's employer, supports the family's request for privacy. >> the risk is simply too high to allow them released in public. the internet has changed things

and there are individuals wlos will do disturbing things with this videos. >> reporter: brancheau was killed february 24th when tilikum grabbed the 40-year-old by her pony tail and dragged her into the water. tilikum has been involved in two other deaths. another traener in canada in 1991 and again in 1999 when a homeless man entered the whale's pool. seaworld admits it knew its violence history. last week the same judge issued a temporary restraining order on the videos preventing their release. now brancheau's family and seaworld want the order to become permanent. >> the issue before this court is what happens to those records when they are through with their job. >> reporter: kelly cobiella, cbs news, miami. john medicals medicals john the attorney for dawn withdrawn cho's family. how is the family holding up?

>> it's hard for to us emergency what it's like for us to deal with the death of a close family member and then at the same time deal with the possible publication of that actual death. they're holding up as well as you can expect right now. >> you have seen the video. how would you describe it? >> it's a horrific individual of an individual's death. i think the important part of this from a legal point of view is it's incredibly intrusive and horrific to the family being but it doesn't really add anything to a public debate.but it doesn't really add anything to a public debate. >> has the family seen it. >> >> no, they have not. >> and the most important thing about why you would want to prevent it from becoming public is trusion on the family. and the new world puts this type of thing on youtube. and it's a permanent intrusion and harm to a family that years from now, their children, their grandchildren, their aunlts and uncles can see this type of thing. and it's continually harmful.

the world is different today. >> would it be agreeable to you or the family that at least some members of the press would be allowed to view the video, not messily make copies of it, because this is, after all, the subject of and ongoing investigation, there may be some negligence involved, maybe even malfeasance. would it be agreeable to you for some members of the press to view in that way? >> we're talking to members of the press for ways to uphold the public's right to know and the press' interest in var pi indication of the truth. there are a number of ways to do that. the judge can view the video. keep in mind that there are public agencies now, the sheriff's department, the medical examiner, that are reviewing these tapes and they will issue written reports. those written reports will be public. so the goal of holding accountable and making sure that these investigations are thorough can probably be

this morning we have a hard lesson in friendship. facebook style. this morning police are searching for two men who ransacked a home in new albany, indiana after the homeowners posted on face fwhook they wouldn't be there for the night. and the scariest part is that they believe one of their online friends is responsible. kerry mcmull will not and kurt pendleton last home for a concert, but not before telling their facebook friends in a post. luckily for them they had recently installed a surveillance system in their hole. at 8:42, two burglars entered the home using a screwdriver to forces open a book door. the cameras caught the entire episode on tape pft individual skro shows the two men going through mcyou mullen's purse and stealing a television right off the wall. they're seen driving away with a laundry basket filled with the stolen goods. after posting images of the

suspects on facebook, mclullen realized one of them had friended her about six months ago. she says he grew up across the street from her and she hasn't seen him in more than 20 years. keri and kurt are here exclusively this morning. good morning to you both. with friends like these, who needs enemies, huh ? >> exactly. >> did you even give it a second thought about posting where you were going for the night? >> no i do it every day. >> and now in heeindsight in. >> i haven't been on there since. >> so then you get home, you watch the surveillance video and you take matters in to your own hands posting the images online. what kind of response do you get? >> of course people were saying they were sorry. i had one person say that they thought it was particular person, that the person's thought been i.d.ed by the cops yet, so we're not 100% sure. i have a lot of friends on there that i don't talk to on a regular basis that's from high school.

so that's why the camera is out there and their faces are on tv. so hopefully he can be i.d.ed. >> but after that person said, hey, this looks like so-and-so who is your facebook friend, did you agree, did you think, yeah that looks like that person? >> yes, i looked at his page. i had not looked at his page at all. and i hadn't seen this person at all in a long time. and he has twin if it's not him. >> and if we didn't get him on camera, you would never in a million years suspected him. >> and it's amazing that you did because hadn't you you just installed that camera? >> not even for a week prior. and for another reason. we were just trying to see people coming and going during the day. >> because you're selling your hou house. >> yeah, i wanted to see who was coming because something got broken that was important to her so i said i'm going to install these cameras and be done. so four days later we're

catching someone on camera stealing everything on the first floor pretty much. >> it looks like they're pinning up big electronics. what did they take ta that heards the most? >> i had my grandmother's ring that she left when i was probably pour when she passed away. it was her wedding band. and it was in our bedroom in a jewelry box. and they took that. that's the only thing that's not replaceable. so i would really like to have that back. >> sense you think you know who it is, have police made any progress at all? >> helped that they have leads and they are talking to witnesses. that's all they'll release right now. >> what are you learned from this, both of you, and what do you hope that people will learn? >> i think the social networkings are good to have. you just have to be smart about it. because just because you're trustworthy and a nice person does not mean everyone on your facebook is. so you you can't put your address -- my address wasn't even listed or your phone number or that you're home alone or going out of town.

the senate worked past 2:00 this morning. democrats turned back dozens of amendments designed to derail the bill, but republicans found two minor provisions concerning grants for college students that violate budget rules. the senate will vote on the changes later today, then send the revised bill back to the house for final approval. anger over the reform bill has boiled over, at least ten democrats who voted for the measure report receiving some sort of threat. the windows of four congressional offices had bricking hurled through them and there have been let thing phone calls, as well. this morning house majority leader steny hoyer told maggie that the violence is not par for the course. >> we've had a lot of serious disagreements on tax bills, on war and peace, and other matters. and i haven't seen the level of, frankly, threats or anger or threat anything of violent acts that i've seen recently. >> now, in a statement, house republican leader john boehner

"health watch," indoor tans and cancer. 30 million americans visit indoor tanning salons each year. this morning the fda is holding a hearing on proposed stricter regulations based on new research linking tanning beds to

skin cancer. elaine quijano has one woman's caution their tale. >> reporter: at 21, any com tamney was a veteran of tanning a sa lons. she's traded her regular tanning sessions for doctor visits after being diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. what was your reaction? >> it was leak a scene from the movie, the phone fell out of my head, dropped to the floor crying. it was just -- i think oncologists and cancer are the two scariest words. >> reporter: emergency surgery left her with a six inch scar on her back. now she's awaiting the results of another biopsy. >> i don't eat, i don't sleep, because one more phone call could be just how it was last year. >> reporter: but dermatologists believe the dangers are clear. they say using indoor tanning beds before age 35 increases a person's risk of melanoma by 75%. nearly 69,000 new cases of
