he smiled at 7-year-old megan and put his name on her school bag. >> how do you feel about guns? >> bad. >> you don't like guns? >> no. >> what about that he brought guns in to dc? >> i would be mad. >> but you still wanted his autograph? >> uh-huh. >> reporter: how come? because he's famous. >> uh-huh. >> reporter: the 30 days in a halfway house is less than prosecutors wanted. they said arenas lied and failed to show any remorse. but it was more than the simple probation recommended by pre- trial investigators in arenas ' lawyers. the wizard's star's voice cracked as he apologized for letting down his teammates and the people of the city. the judge insisted he was sentencing the basketball star just as he would someone without fame or wealth. >> he found that despite aleen thats ' prior conviction on gun charges, he had no history of

violence and that his intent was not to shoot anyone but he found it was more than a bad joke. the judge said arenas was trying to taunt and intimidate his teammate. but contradicting the prosecutor, the judge said, arenas is remorseful. now, i'm not aware of anyone actually doing a survey and looking at the average sentence for carrying a pistol in to the district of columbia without a license, which is the charge here. but, the court services agent agency, those pre-trial investigators recommended simple probation and the court people tell me that is usually about on the money for the given circumstances the individual circumstances in the case. and they say, of course, that they recommended simple probation. >> all right, bruce. thank you for that. if you are interested in reading all the court documents connected to the case, we have them on our website at wusa9.com under 9 news extras. and at 6:25, sports

director brett haber steps in. he will have more on the sentencing and what this means for arenas and the team. now to a story that serves as a reminder not to accept rides from strangers. police say a loudoun county woman was attacked by two men who offer her a ride. she is lucky to be alive tonight. surae chinn reports from leesburg. >> reporter: police say the 38- year-old bomb and a family member became stranded on the side of the road when their car broke down on wednesday night. the police say the woman went to get help leaving her relative with the car. >> she decides atta point she is going to walk to a friend's house to get assistance. >> reporter: police say two men in a pickup truck with west virginia plates offered her a ride but instead of helping, police say one of the men, inappropriately touched her and when she tried to fight him off he attacked her. >> very, very surprising. this is a quiet neighborhood. a lot of people here are very established and been here for a while and we have yet to

encounter anything like this. >> startling like i would be able to trust my neighbors who live across the street or down the street or anyone driving on the road. >> reporter: the sheriffs department says this serves as a warning and a reminder to not get in to a car with strangers. >> if it was my wife or somebody i care about i would tell her not to get in the vehicle with anyone. >> reporter: authorities say it is best to stay with the vehicle, but residents say cell service can be spotty in the county. >> go to someone's house and knock on the door. step back from the door and say i'm having car trouble, can you call? >> there's not much out here. and to think that, i don't know, it could happen somewhere where it would seem so safe. >> reporter: police say the woman was able to get away. her relative somehow was able to get the car started again, find the woman and call for help. in leesburg, surae chinn, 9 news now. police say there was no weapon involved. they are still looking for the suspect. police in prince william county will be out tomorrow morning at lake ridge park handing out flyers to try to find a man who attacked a woman

there. the man was wearing a ski mask. he had a knife and when he grabbed her and pulled her to the ground on thursday morning. she had been jogging with her small dog, who spotted the man first and started to bark. it may have been the dogs barking at her screaming that caused the man to leave. she was not hurt but the neighbors are concerned. >> i wonder if the dog stopped them or her screaming or it being like too public of an area. i don't know what stopped him really? what would stop him from hurting someone else? >> reporter: police do not have a description yet for the attacker except to say he was wearing dark clothes and a ski mask. a police sergeant accused of orchestrating a scheme to get more time off of work turn herself in today. montgomery county attorneys say that she altered payroll entries to have more leave. prosecutors say she was paid more than $10,000 over a one- year period for hours she did not work. she has been suspended without pay pending her trial. the irs is filed a lien

against marion barry. the federal government says the dc council member owes $15,000 in back taxes. those taxes date back to 2005. barry is already on probation for failing to file his taxes. all right. it's time to check the roadways. patranya bhoolsuwan, how is the friday night drive? >> hello, everybody. we have a few to talk about. the outer loop of the capital beltway has been a mess all afternoon. right now we are seeing it is breezy out there but delays are easing up as we see here past river road toward the fairfax county. we still have a crash blocking one right lane at 123. an earlier crash brought down an overhead sign. crews are trying to clear that. it. moving to 95 south from dale city all the way to triangle. still seeing delays, as well. 66, 395 incident free at this hour. good news on public transit, everything is on time.

if there is a movie in your future bring extra cash. the ticket prices are going up today. they hope to cash in on 3-d movies. the price for two adult and two kids at this amc theater in alexandria is now $64. that's a $12 increase. >> that's a big price increase, a pretty big percentage. >> probably see two movies for that price and now $15 and think of concessions, $30 at a movie just for one movie, unbelievable right now. >> reporter: the ticket prices affect several movie theater chains including amc and regal. three weeks to go until tax day as you really needed that reminder. but if you still need help to resolve issues or claim those special tax breaks the irs wants to help. this saturday you can get face- to-face assistance as the

two weeks away from home sound like a vacation but it is no picnic for 600 condo residents in falls church. a small fire caused an electrical outage and it could take weeks before they get power back. this happened at the renaissance condos along george c. marshall drive. lindsey mastis has the story. >> reporter: it's lights out thanks to a small fire in the electrical room. >> we opened the door and looked down the hallway and there was smoke coming from the electrical room. >> reporter: they evacuated a few floors around 2:00 a.m. and some residents say the problems began hours beforehand. >> the appliances in the kitchen went out. so i went to check other rooms and the lights were working but they were really dim. >> reporter: fire officials say the sprinkler system put out most of the flames. crews are having to make some

repairs to a few floors but most of the apartments don't have damage. residents living on the first five floors are not expected to have power until tuesday. >> i'm a little stressed right now. >> pretty angry. frustrated. >> power is on in the hallways and the elevators are working. the problem is with the electrician to the condos. >> this affects my access to school stuff because i need the internet. >> reporter: some people are going to the he hotel. >> the cost will be over $150 a night which will set me back 2,000 to $2,500 for the two- week period. >> reporter: the building manager refused to request a comment. the fire department is still investigating the cause. in falls church, lindsey mastis, 9 news now. the creation center is opening doors if you want to

use shower facilities. they have been encouraged to call insurance companies. one woman said she did but was told her claim would not be covered. loudoun county where daniel boldin is accused of contributing to the delink winn wentcy of a minor. he was an employee with a youth shelter and allegedly helped a teen run away from the facility. >> most of the teens in this place are troubled. in this case. obviously encourage them to do the wrong thing in this case. >> bolden is out on bail. the obama administration struck a new nuclear arms deal with russia. >> the united states and russia have agreed to the most comprehensive arms control agreement in two decades. >> reporter: the treaty calls for both sides to slash their stockpile of weapons leaving each country with 1500-long range nuclear warheads and half of that number of missiles. the significance goes beyond

nuclear weapons. the treaty is slated to be signed april 8th ahead of the international summit on nuclear security. back on captiol hill, house speaker nancy pelosi celebrated her 70th birthday by giving americans what she called the greatest gift. she signed the final piece of legislation to overhaul the health care system. the legislation now moves to the president's desk. vandals apparently tossed bricks through the windows of the charlottesville republican party headquarters. police say it appears to be the latchet nest a spring of politically motivated crimes in the country. rob bell, who represents the area says "this is not a third world country. this needs to stop." >> seem so glad to be here. >> reporter: they are back together again. john mccain and sarah palin campaigning for the first time since losing the 2008 presidential race. mccain is fighting for his political life and needs palin to shore up his conservative base. mccain is fending off a primary

i don't know. do we know the full details of what he did in terms of charity and the guidelines the government had to follow? i don't know but was justice served or did arenas benefit as from his status as a famous athlete? we will look in to that more. and the big dance rolls on tonight nine sports talks to the coach coming up.

when you are standing in front of a judge it is not supposed to matter how many points you average or how many zero your contract has. in arenas ' case, though, did it? despite he took four guns this toe trick and showed little remorse for it arenas will spend no time in jail the sentence handed out by the judge this afternoon. an 18-month suspended sentence except for 30 days in a halfway
