the big question at the white house is there time left for any other big initiative this year. midterm elections are in the offing. members of congress have gone home. and they're wondering if they can get anything done before the election. >> for the stake of your state, you send the maverick back to the united states senate. >> reporter: together again, sarah palin and john mccain are on the campaign trail. this time the former vice presidential candidate rallying support for senator mccain in his hotly contested arizona senate seat. and in turn, giving the glimpse of what the midterm elections may look like. >> we're going to take it on in the streets, water going to take it on in voter registration. and my friends, we're going to take it on on november the 10th when we take control of the house and the senate. >> reporter: it's he a message expected to be repeated by republicans as they go back to their districts for easter break and gear up for the fight in the fall with emotions running high

on both sides of the debate, the question whether the message of repealing health care reform resonate with voters. >> it's always easier to run for giving stuff to americans than it is to run for taking things away. >> reporter: with president obama's health care victory behind him, can he now turn to other issues on his agenda. with unemployment over 9%, the economy remains the nation's top concern. some wonder if the president can get bipartisan support for anything with the divide so deep between the two parties. >> barack obama faces an enormous challenge, how to rangwrank wrangle votes from a republican party that isn't want to support the president. >> reporter: there may be one area where the republicans may be willing to work with the republicans an democrats. that's wall street regulation, though no firm gop support yet. >> joel brown at the white house. thank you. for some perspective, we turn to two washington veteran,

amy holmes host of america's morning news and moa lathy. they're both this washington and i say good morning to the both of you. amy, i'll start with you. can the president expect to get anything done now that there is such a deep divide in washington? >> well, senator mccain and senator graham, both republicans, said the well has been poisoned with hthis health care vote. but in an election year, it's hard to get big stuff done because neither party has an incentive to give the other side a win to take hot poles. with the health care vote, your open network reported that a majority of americans want republicans to keep fighting on health care, even after it's been signed in to law. do i see any big legislation this year? no. there might be some small bore things and joel mentioned financial regulation. judd gregg, a republican, said

there's 100% chance this will get passed this year. the question is whether it get passed before november. >> we'll talk about that poll. we can put up those numbers of or latest cbs poll. 89% of republican, 41% of democrats, 66% of independents, sea the republicans should continue to chal being the health care bill. what do you think? >> well, i think you've seen a up 1/2number of polls come out t show a number of different things. i've seen several that showed that public opinion is starting to swing back in favor of the health care reform law that was just signed. so i think the president going out there and continuing to sell had is goithis is going to be a important factor in the weeks and months ahead as well as being able to sheft attentiift o other issues. within days of signing the bill, he announced his plan to help accept the tide of foreclosure, he announced this new treaty

with russia. it still needs congressional action, but the ability to show that we are moving forward. health care reform was a good thing. here's why. but we have to stern our attention to other things will be a key factor. >> there's so much bad blood right now. do you expect republicans will do what they're saying and that is stone wall right up to the midterm elections? >> i think the american people would hope not. i think, look -- >> the american people hope not, but we know what the american people want and what goes on in washington are two polar opposites. >> also let's be clear that it is an election year and this is not necessarily a republican tactic. i work for the senate majority liter bill fist andrist shts af democrats can be stalling, too. there's poll after poll and including the ones at the pal lot box in virginia, new jersey and massachusetts that shows the american people did not want to

get this passed. and i would also point out that there are 49 house democrats who are sitting in john mccain directs. districts that went for john mccain in 2008. and 34 democrats, house democrats, voted against the health care bill. and two democrats in the senate, in very hotly contested races, voted against rec con sell yags. so the people who are nervous about their votes on health care are not republicans but democrats. >> but also let's be clear about this. i think you're going to see a number of republicans and democrats facing very serious electoral challenges this year. you've got a number of republican governors or states where they're defending republican governor seats that are in trouble like in arizona and in nevada and hawaii and florida, vermont. a number of -- >> they're actually very popular. >> but the democrats are leading in hawaii right now in all the polls. arizona and nevada are both

trailing to democratic challengers in those races. >> guys, we have to -- >> both sides are fighting hard. >> it's going to be an interesting november. we'll see if anything else gets done. thank you both very much. nearly six months after a 7-year-old florida girl vanished on her way home from school, a suspect has been charged with her murder. and he could face the can death penalty. cbs news correspondent kelly wallace reports. >> i'd like to take this opportunity to say to jared harrell, we got you and you ain't getting away. >> reporter: somer's mother, dina, sends a message to skrar read harrell, the unprovided restaurant worker charged with sexually assaulting and killing her 7-year-old daughter and then dumping her body in a florida dumpster. two days later, it was discovered in a georgia landfill about 50 miles away. >> a monster.

that's all this person is a monster. >> reporter: harrell's name first surfaced short will he aftof a somer's death as one of 4,000 cases. he was living near somer's school at the time she disappeared. the charges against him are based on statements from witnesses, harrell himself, and dna evidence. >> based on this evidence, we feel confident that jared harrell committed this crime. >> reporter: two months before somer disappeared, police started investigating harrell for allegedly having child pornography on his computer, but he wasn't arrested until february because investigators had to prove he actually downloaded the porn. somer's north earn florida community united in grief and fear following her death and now her mother hopes communities nationwide unite to take action. >> this isn't maybury anymore.

we need to figure out what we're not doing right. >> reporter: kelly wallace, cbs news, new york. >> joining me now is jean casarez. thanks for being here. first off, this happened so quickly. there are lots of cases like this unfortunately and rarely are they solved this quickly. how did police solve this. >> we have learned that wet statements helped them bring the charges. admissions from the defendant, which is interesting. they said that yesterday. also dna evidence. and then evidence that they took from his home. so i think all of those things together. >> investigators aren't saying very much yet about how somer died, the details of the crime. what do we know? >> we know she was walking home from school, she got in a little argument, so she walked ahead. we heard yesterday that she was lured into the home by the defendant, mr. harrell, and that she wasn't in there very long.

we now know her cause of death was asphyxiation. and we know the charges which are premed eighted murder, sexual battery upon a child less than 12, and lewd and lascivious molestation of a child under 12. sg and this is someone that has no criminal record. they cooperate have their dna in a data batabasdatabase. >> so the team that investigated this federal, local, state authorities, a huge team, they presumably have a whole l of evidence on their side, how ask defense attorney argue this case? >> it it will be very difficult. they think also the pulse of our country is looking at cases like this with just an eagle eye. i heard something yesterday that is curious. they said that when the amber alert was issued, that dogs

immediately went to the neighborhood, they searched every home, and that dogs were in the backyard of the defendant's home. and i think a defense attorney could actually then say, well, let's bring the dogs in, it could be for the defense saying he didn't do it. the dogs didn't even see it. >> why didn't they hit on that house. >> and then you have the insanity argument. very difficult. >> and quickly, what are the lessons learned from this particular case? >> i think the lessons learned, detectives worked so quickly that they were at the dump terse in it the ar dumpsters in the area and there was a detective's vehicle following. they got the body. >> fast work. all right. thank you so much for joining us. now over to cbs news correspondent elaine quijano with the rest of the morning's headlines. good morning, everyone.

at least 57 are dead and 73 wounded of aer two car bombs exploded friday in the iraqi town of kalas about 50 miles north of baghdad. the twin blasts were minutes apart apartment came as residents were gathered outside a cafe waiting for the results of the march 7th elections. late yesterday the electoral commission announce that had former prime minister's coalition narrowly beated nuri al maliki's by two seats. al maliki has vowed to challenge the results. president obama travels to prague to sign the first major nuclear weapons treaty in nearly two decades. this new agreement replaces and expands the landmark 1991 righty which expired in december. bill plante reports. >> reporter: following a conversation with russia's president medvedev to formally seal the deal, president obama harrelled the pact to further reduce u.s. and russian nuclear weapons. >> today we've taken another

step forward in leaving behind the legacy of the 20th century. >> reporter: over the next seven year, the u.s. and russia will reduce by about a third, but that still leaves more than enough to wipe each other out and the treaty cuts the number of missile, bombers and submarines to deliver those weapons by half. major problems in the year long negotiation, on site verification, now in the treaty, and the u.s. plan to develop a defensive mess sill system which is not prohibited. now the president and medvedev will meet april 8th to sign the treaty in prague. >> with this agreement, the united states and russia, the two largest nuclear powers in the world, we strengthen our global efforts to stop the spread of these weapons. >> reporter: the treaty will have to be ratified by both nations and here that means a bipartisan 67 votes in the very partisan u.s. senate. so the white house is already trumpeting the support of the joint chiefs of staff and of

former republican secretaries of state. bill plante, cbs news, the white house. president obama's secretary nominee for the head of the transportation security administration has taken himself out of the running. retired army major general robert harding was introduced by homeland security secretary janet napolitano earlier this month. on friday, he withdrew from consideration because of questions over his background as a defense contractor which he said would prove a distraction to the administration. in late friday, ncaa tournament action, top seeded duke eliminated fourth seeded purdue to move into the feenl 8 for the first time since 2004. with 11:55 on the clock, kyle sinkler's three-pointer put the blue devils up 40-35. in other play action, bay who are defeated tiny st. mary's school from northern california. duke plays third seeded baylor on sunday. the tournament is now down to the final eight teams and will reach the final four by the end

you can use frozen or fresh. i find that the frozen is very sweet. i wanted to show this soup because of the ease. not only is it economical, but it's easy. and mint peas is a classic combination. so you put the water over it, about for cups for about six cups of pieces and we're serving four people. so, again, this soup can be served hot or cold. obviously today you'd want it hot. and then later on you'd serve it cold. >> how long on the stove? >> we'll cook it for a kcouple minutes. a tricky do is put in fresh herbs at the end to keep it really green. and then in the blender it goes. this is something that everybody has at home, blender, peas,
