back operation. good morning. >> good morning. how are you doing? >> i'm doing well. we hope this week starts off a little better than last night. >> i know. actually it is starting off better than last night. the showers are starting to push to the east so that is a good thing. as we go throughout the day we could see temperatures not too bad. with the cloud cover out there we are actually above where we should be this time of the year. coming in to gaithersburg 50 degrees. rockville 50. 53 bran die wine and andrews 52. springfield looking at 51. we are seeing that in to ft. belvoir. switch to radar and see what is happening there. not too bad. we had showers last night but now we are seeing that push off to the east. you can see the heaviest stuff is around leonardtown, off to the south and east of that area. maybe a few embedded thunderstorms in that area. this is pushing to the north and east. we will start to have a little reformation as we go in to time. more showers lingering tomorrow

accidents to report at this time. andrea, back to you. if you live near rfk stadium, don't be surprised if you hear a loud noise this morning. metro will be holding an emergency response drill simulating an explosion on board the metro bus. kristin fisher is live at rfk stadium with more. good morning, kristin. >> good morning, andrea. this mock explosion is going to be taking place right here at the parking lot at rfk stadium and will be taking place between 8:00 this morning and 2:00 this afternoon. now, this is the final drill in a series of three emergency response exercises that metro has been conducting over the past month or so. and i want you to look at the video from the first drill back in february. it simulated a shootout at the friendship heights metro station. and then the second drill took place on sunday morning early and it took place inside the tunnel between the rosslyn and foggy bottom metro stations.

the scenario there was an explosion on a metro train inside of a tunnel and the final drill will feature a similar explosion on a metro bus. multiple passengers will be injured and then the first responders will have to figure out how to handle a second round of explosives found in a bus in a nearby garage and they are even expected to get a phone call from a mock bomber stating even more have been placed on other buses. the purpose is to test metro's response to a major incident in the dc transit system. we are not just talking met tremendous' response but the response of the region. so that means this morning the metro transit police department explosives ordinance deconnection testimony will be responding along with police, fire and ems and the fbi and i was at that first drill at the metro heights metro station in february. it was very real, very elaborate and you can expect the drills here this morning

will be similar. >> thank you. it wasn't a drill, though, this morning on the transit system in moscow. russian authorities say two female suicide bombers blew themselves up at two subway stations. at least 35 people are dead. dozens more wounded. one of the explosions happened underneath the building that houses the security agency formerly known as the kgb. suspicion will most likely focus on sprattist groups most likely responsibility for the attacks. a man is accused of making a bomb threat on a cruiseship. they say the 31-year-old made the threat on board a carnival cruiseship. coast guard boats escorted the ship back to florida. there fbi agents an the coast guard searched the ship but did not find a bomb. this morning, president obama returns to washington after a surprise visit to afghanistan. the president visited troops there for the first time as

commander in chief. the surge of 100,000 additional troops will be in place by the summer. so far the number of u.s. casualties doubled what it was during the same time last year. >> your services are absolutely necessary. absolutely essential to america's safety. >> reporter: political experts say with the uproar over the president east health care plan at home, the timing of his trip was no accident. president obama also met with happened karzai, urging him to stop the government corruption and drug trafficking in his country. several demonstrations against the catholic church marked the start of holy week in the district. they spoke out about the sex abuse scandal which is now sweeping europe and there are mounting questions about the pope's handling of child sex abuse cases decades ago. allegations the pope failed to act and aided in cover-up involving priests accused of

abuse. five after the hour. time for the latest "living $mart" report of the morning and jessica doyle has a me view of the day ahead on wall street. slow increments but positive. >> 11,000 is really not that far away. it's very, very close. and analysts are wondering if the recent rallies if we can keep momentum going this week. we will have to wait and see. overnight we saw more green arrows. asian stocks mostly higher today thanks in part to stronger earnings there. here at home, checking the numbers the dow is at 10850 after gaining nine on friday. the nasdaq dropped by two and the s&p 500 was up almost one point. the numbers on the local job market are out and painting a mixed picture of unemployment. the jobless rate in the district dropped to 11.9%. it is among the highest in the nation. virginia's unemployment rate rose to 7.2%. and maryland's rate was 7.7% last month up from 7.5% in

january. the jobless rate for the nation was steady at 9.7%. a deal was struck to add a location in 2007 for a super fresh grocery store but now developers are looking for a replace for the store. the local economy is just turning out to be one of those things right now. so we will have to wait and see how that pans out. in the next half hour you have the money saving tip of the day. >> we like to save money on the food budget. we go out to dinner all the time we will see how much we are spending at restaurants. >> date night maybe at home. >> maybe just date night. >> just date night. all right. >> jessica, thank you. doctors say first lady barbara bush should be released from the hospital this week. the nature of her illness has not been disclosed but she's been given a battery of tests. a spokesperson says george her

better walker bush drove her to the hospital on saturday when she wasn't feeling well. dorothy height is hospitalized in serious but stable condition at howard university hospital. doctors in the intensive care unit are treating the 98-year- old height for an undisclosed illness. she fell ill lance week and missed a birthday celebration in her honor at the national council of negro women. later this morning a memorial service will take place at the dc historical society for paul devrouax. if you don't recognize his name you will recognize his work. he and his partner worked on the national convention center, verizon center and he died of a heart attack last monday. he was 67 years old. an investigation is underway in to the actions of rescuers who mistakingly believed a maryland man was

in the news now, rescuers in china are trying to to save more than 150 workers trapped in a flooded coal mine. the miners have been trapped more than 24 hours. the portions county fire department is investigating the death of a glen arden man. friday morning they thought that the man was dead but when the medical examiner arrived later he found signs of life. she was he was take on the the hospital where he did die on saturday. student protesters a

welcome back to 9 news now. a number of people were injured and dozens of homes destroyed during a series of violent storms in north carolina. hundreds of lightning strikes along with high winds, hail and heavy rain were reported from greensboro to charlotte. several communities across central and southern regions of the tar heel state remained on alert throughout the night for possible tornadoes. our time is 5:14. lynnette is in for howard bernstein and considering we had the rain last night it wasn't a bad weekend. >> exactly. it wasn't a bad weekend. we were a little below average. my thing is if you get the

sunshine it is good. let me go ahead and show you what is going on. looking at a live doppler radar. we are out of the woods this morning but still have a few sprinkles across the area as well and more showers in to the overnight and in to tomorrow. let's talk about the next three days. we will be dealing with temperatures improving. that's for sure, especially as we go in to wednesday. in the meantime, today around 61 degrees. tuesday around 54. tapering the showers off and by wednesday, ample sunshine with the temperature around 64. this is the bus stop forecast. you know what, not too bad. i will suggest you take the rain gear with you. temperatures 47 to 55. off and on rain showers as we go throughout the day.

we will not get rid of them totally but you will see they will stay to the east, especially morning and we have the high at 55, 61. the winds will be out of the south at five to ten miles an hour and the sunrise 6:58. as we jump to the afternoon, rain showers and the winds will pick up, as well. highs around 55 to 61. the winds are from the north at 10 to 15 miles an hour. and then it will be breezier from there. showers and winds. you can see that and the winds 10 to 20 miles an hour. lows 43 to 48 degrees and then tomorrow, mostly cloudy with showers. we are slowly improving but the winds are on us from the northwest at 15 to 20 miles an hour. the satellite and radar combination. the heaviest to the south. that's where they have tornadoes and thunderstorms last night. that's going to stay away from us. maybe a rumble of thunder as we go in to time. future cast shows what is going on here. more rain lingering overnight and also tomorrow. you will have the rain gear for today. you will need it tonight.

bridge and 95 to 6 everything is nice and green. both loops are okay on this part of 495. the northbound trip on 95, we are tracking that as well and everyone seems to be moving at speed from the prince william parkway to the mixing bowl. that's the traffic. andrea, back to you. in the living well headlines air pollution may affect a woman's chances of getting pregnant through invitro fertilization. a study found women exposed to a greater amount of pollution have a somewhat lower chance of success with ivf. previous studies linked poor air quality to an increased risk of pre-term delivery and low birth weight. but researchers say more study is needed to determine if air pollution itself is responsible. beta blockers may slow the spread of breast cancer. a study finds that the patients treated with the blood pressure lowering drugs are 71% less likely to die from the disease. they are also nearly 60% less likely to get another form of

cancer. experts are calling it interesting but preliminary. there's very encouraging news for young women who survived breast cancer. experts used to them they should avoid having children because the chances of the disease returning were so great. but research is causing doctors to look at breast dancer and pregnancy in 0 new light. >> reporter: 15 months ago erin gave birth to her daughter madeleine. >> best moment of my life. >> reporter: but the best moment of her life came after one of the worst. erin was diagnosed with breast cancer. >> scary. >> reporter: she had chemotherapy and today she and her baby are doing fine. erin wants more children but in the past was told it shouldn't. >> it is no longer thought that getting pregnant spurs a breast cancer to occur. >> reporter: doctors had believed that hormonal surges during pregnancy could cause the cancer to come back but

rousing speech on sunday, thanking u.s. troops for all they have done and reminding him of what they are fighting for. >> the taliban -- if the taliban remakes this country, and al-qaeda can operate with impunity than more american lives will be at stake. >> reporter: it was the commander in chief's first trip to afghanistan as president. when he took office there were 34,000 u.s. troops in the country and there are now 80,000 and later this year, when the troop surge he ordered is complete there will be nearly 100,000. the president acknowledged that while difficult days lie ahead in the eight-year war the u.s. will prevail. >> i'm confident all of you will get the job done right here in afghanistan. i'm confident of that. >> reporter: but the president wasn't just trying to boost morale abroad, the trip was also aimed at shoring up support here at home where recent polls show americans remain divide on the war. >> we have seen already progress with respect to

as you were saying, andrea, i was at the first drill in february and let me tell you it was very intense. very elaborate. we are talking smoke machines. there were dozens of volunteer victims. it was as close to the real deal as you can get. you are looking at the video from the first drill right now. this past sunday, early sunday morning metro held the second emergency exercise in the tunnel between the rosslyn and foggy bottom metro stations. the their owe was an explosion on a metro train inside the tunnel and the final drill will feature a similar explosion on a metro bus and it will take place between 8:00 this morning and 2:00 p.m. it is to test metro's response to a major incident in the transit system. we are not just talking about metro's response but the region's response. that means this morning you can expect to see the metro transit police department on the scene

a high-rise complex in falls church, virginia is virtually empty this morning. an electrical fire early friday morning left the renaissance 2230 building without power. after an inspection on saturday, residents learned the electricity to all 332 units will stay off for a month. many had packed up and left but some were hoping to wait out the repairs. >> we were plugged in to the hallway, which was nine because we had the necessities. we had our refrigerator, a couple of lights here and there and it was fine. from what we hear now we have to unplug from the hallway which means we have absolutely no power. >> reporter: fairfax county declared the building uninhabitable but not unsafe. meaning residents can still go inside to retrieve belongings. many hope the county

declaration will help them get reimbursed by insurance companies. now to the power of mother nature. thousands flocked to the tidal basin for the national cherry blossom festival. it begins on saturday and runs 16 days. more than a third of the blossoms are now out and they predict the peak will be from april 1st through the 4th. we say good morning to lynnette charles. she's in for howard bernstein. how's the week looking? >> the week is going to improve. that's good news. once we get our of the rain today and tomorrow you are going to love it. let me show you what is going on. we had some rain overnight and thunderstorms to the south. this is a live look at doppler and you can see the heaviest rain is to the south now. as that starts to shift to the north and east throughout the day, well, we will start to get back in the wet weather. don't think that just because you are not getting the rain this morning, you are going to see more as you go through the rest of the day.

andre shrecki filed for bankruptcy. we spoke to the woman who won the suit against her former boss. >> he grabbed my breast and i said, don't ever touch me like this again. >> reporter: ronnie was a colorist at a salon on 16th and k streets until the lewd comments of her boss, andre chreky escalated to violence. >> he grabbed me by the shoulder and he pulled me down and he was opening his pants. >> reporter: barrett says the prominent hair dresser asked her to come to his office for an employment review and potentially a raise. >> he said, well, why don't you give me a [ bleep ] and i said i said i'm serious, andre, i came here for what is due to me. and he said no i want a [ bleep ] >> despite wanting to build a career and client base at the

salon and having a family to support, barrett filed a sexual harassment suit and the jury found in her favor. she won $2.3 million. >> it was as if pounds and pounds of weight had been lifted off of me. >> reporter: but chreky whose liquid assets totals $6 million during the trial filed for bankruptcy. 14 others alleged that he groped and sexually assaulted them. >> andre would target young vulnerable imgrant women and those were the women he made unwelcomed sexual advances too. >> reporter: despite the bankruptcy filing 9 news learned that he owns the k street building that houses his salon, a home in great falls and another vacation home. andrea mccarren, 9 news now. >> a spokesman for andre chreky said he couldn't do an

she went missing in a state park but after two days in the woods a bloodhound and its handler tracked her down. >> reporter: he's were than a playful bloodhound. schnauze is a member of the search and rescue unit for the fairfaxed if pd. they found an abandoned car in the park and spent 48 hours looker for the woman who owned the vehicle but kept running in to dead ends. timorous oning out and so was hope. that's when police called in the dog to find the woman here at the mason neck state park in the dead of night. >> a quarter mile, worked through the trees. >> reporter: a few rips of cloth that belonged to the missing woman and off he went this to the forest. after an hour he picked up the two-day scent and found her. >> she was out there. she was extremely disoriented when we found her.
