front, we have early morning tieups to tell you about. on the inner loop, to go eastbound 66, crash activity keeps the ramp closed. overall in virginia, not seeing any problems as far as the speed of drivers between 95 past braddick up towards this exit. as we move over to upper marlboro, this has been around since early this morning. eastbound 214 still closed at watkinsburg drive because of cash activity. you want to make a left onto watkins park and a right onto chestertown. then you go to kettering to make another right to access 214. route 4, route 5, 301, no problems to report out here. andrea, back to you. >> thank you, angie. just when we were getting used to the sunshine, bad weather came in. we had heavy rains and strong winds that brought down power lines. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning, andrea. just when we were getting used

to the sunshine, the warm weather, it as starting to feel like summer. we had high winds and heavy rains that brought town several trees as you said. i'm standing in front of one of the biggest we've seen. this is a giant tree, and it has crashed into the town homes here in northeast d.c. i'm on neil street. it's uprooted part of the sidewalk. really, some very strong winds had to knock this guy over. those houses right behind the tree sustained only minor damage. this is just one of many trees brought down by last night's high winds. several reports of cars also being crushed by trees. in addition to trees going down, we've also of course got the power lines coming down. at the peak of the storm last night, dominion power was reporting more than 4,000

customers were without power. the good news this morning, we're hearing that only a few hundred dominion and pepco customers are still without power. so crews definitely making progress through the night. this was one of the many trees brought down during last night's storm. more good news is nobody was injured in this. we're hearing reports that some people were driving down the street in arlington and a tree crashed onto their car. they were not injured. the heavy winds, heavy rains and a lot of the wet ground this is what we're seeing this morning. so we'll be bringing you updates all morning long. back to you. >> all right, kristin, thank you. now the latest on the rescue efforts to save four men trapped in a west virginia coal mine. this morning, rescuers are in the mine searching for any possible survivors. yesterday's efforts were cut short because of dangerous

gases. they are now pumping in nitrogen to flush out the deadly gases. crews should get to the men sometime today. >> i believe the families that are relieved and knowing that this process was starting, which the end will be near. >> 25 coal miners were killed in the blast on monday. coming up at 6:00, we'll have a live update on the rescue efforts. the montgomery officer killed sunday morning will be laid to rest this morning. officer ayala ran off the road while responding to a call. the service is open to only family, friends and co-workers. he leaves behind a wife pregnant with triplets and a 14- month-old son. certain roads will be shut down in olney. drivers should expect delays between noon and 2:00 p.m. as officer ayala's funeral procession makes its way from

olney to timonium. it's five after the hour. time for another living smart report. jessica doyle is here with a preview of the day ahead on wall street. will this be the day? >> reporter: eye on the prize, right? the prize of course is dow, 11,000. we're creeping a little closer. 70 points away and already this morning we've seen morallies. stocks in asia were mostly higher. the dow added 30 points yesterday to 10,927. the s & p500 was up about four points. it just got more difficult to open a new restaurant along the bustling u street corridor in northwest washington. zoning for the area allows for about 25% of frontages to be devoted to restaurants, bars and carry out businesses and now the area is full up. the d.c. zoning administrator issued a ruling to no longer grant new permits for restaurants unless a special

exception is granted. a new crop of vehicles on dealer lots lets you do a lot of things in the car by voice control. a new study finds that makes the car safer. the result, drivers using voice control for electronics took their eyes off the road far less than those driving with video players. this study was commissioned by ford motor company. of course, i would have to learn how to do all of the voice controls before i could actually work 'em. >> exactly. how do we say money? >> reporter: there is a chol crop of green laundry detergents on the market. we're testing them out to find out, do they really work? are they worth the financial investment? >> thank you. next when 9 news now continues, the driver of this truck, take a look, will have one heck of a story to tell over coffee this morning. we'll tell you what happened. and later, some local parents are caught off guard after a major summer program is canceled. find out why they think it's a

welcome back. traffic alert in virginia, folks. on the inner loop, we still have the eastbound ram top go. east on 66 closed. volume is building. we'll have more on this coming up. in the news now at 8 after the hour, the west virginia town where 25 miners were killed was the scene of a rally by the westboro baptist church. the group is known for demonstrating at american soldier funerals to express their anger over homosexuality. some in this group believe god killed the 25 miners because the united states is an immoral country. the driver of this tractor- trailer suffered minor injuries in this fiery crash. it happened yesterday near dallas, texas. the truck jackknifed, crashed into three cars before hitting

power outages. let's talk about, though, the rain that still exists on live doppler 9,000hd. it is there to our east now and pulling away from us. the heavy stuff toward the beaches now. we'll zoom in on washington. we're done with it. it's ayos prince george's, anne arundel, charles county quickly pulling away. we'll go across the bay there to annapolis over to chestertown there on the eastern shore. occasionally moderate showers still leftover. as we make our tour down into southern maryland, and parts of southern virginia, this stuff is quickly falling apart there. waldorf, you may get one or two more sprinkles. this thing moves off toward the northeast. the bulk of the rain, the big rains have all gone. as we expand, we still see moderate shower as cross southern st. maries county over to the northern neck now.

reedville, give yourself another half hour. if you are watching from the lower eastern shore, you can have another hour or so before this is out of here. one thing this will do is clean out the air for us. the allergy update yesterday, tree pollen for the second day in a row. very high, grasses, weeds and molds very low. we have cleansed it with the rain so there should be a little relief for the allergy sufferers. today breezy, low 60s, tomorrow low to mid-60s, even plenty of sunshine, a bit breezy at times. sunday looks delightful sunny. 72 degrees, a perfect way to fin shall out the weekend. a leftover shower east, well east, breezy and cool. i think i'll take that shower east out. 40s and 50s this morning. this afternoon, nice. we're going to turn mostly sunny, breezy. much cooler with the highs around 60 or into the lower 60s with the northwest wind at

far. finally, let's call it a wrap in virginia. got to find your lanes wide open. that's a quick look at traffic. andrea, back to you. >> thank you, angie. some parents in fairfax county are scrambling after seven elementary schools announce they would not be offering year round schools. here is a list of the schools cutting the program including graham road elementary. the school says there's a 95% attendance rate during an optional week plus test scores have risen because of year round schools. coordinators say cutting the program is not worth the $2.7 million the school district will be saving. >> one of their main questions is what will i do with my children over the summer? >> i'm just disappointed it's not year round. it take as way from them, you know, being active. >> the school officials admit once these programs are gone it's nearly impossible to get them back, even in a good economy. now to the controversy created by virginia governor

bob mcdonnel as confederate history month in virginia. his original proclamation failed to mention slavery. he apologized for it and denounced slavery. jeremy mayor does not think the controversy will do mcdonnel any daniel. >> most of the people angry about this didn't vote for him so this is not a major scandal or problem for this governor. >> governor mcdonnel says he issued the proclamation to help promote tourism in the commonwealth. next year is the 150th anniversary of the start of the civil war. still to come when 9news now returns, tiger woods teed off at the masters. it appears he's still got it. highlights next in sports. right now at 5:18, let's take a look at celebrities born on this april 9th. good morning, everyone. i'm brett haber with your wake- up sports. what did we expect? he'd be shooting 80? unlikely after his surgery tiger took eight months off and took two tournaments at the end of the year. so yesterday should have surprised no one. tiger smiled then roped his first shot down the fair way. he birdied number three and had two eagles on the nine. on 9, stuck behind that tree and he looked at that hook shot and did well, dumped it on the green, birdied there. best opening round ever for tiger at the masters. as for the nontiger story lines, looks like 60 is the new 30. 60-year-old tom watson who found the fountain of youth at the british last summer did it again. he won the masters 33 years ago, which makes this guy seem like a teenager.

50-year-old fred couples who won the masters 18 years ago shot 6 under 66. he leds by one. gnats with the third game against philly. this will help argue for a full- time gig. tied at five in the seventh. ryan zimmerman couldn't have placed it better with his own two hands. gnats lead 6-5. stayed that way to the ninth. closes the door for a save as a gnat. a new tradition begins in the locker room. they put an elvis wig on the player of the game. willie harris had to wear it. it was weird. donovan mcnabb spent yesterday firing footballs to his new teammates. among them who came out to watch was tim tebow. even he was mesmerized by mcnabb. some were wondering how long it would take to get into the culture of the redskins after

welcome back to 9news now. i'm andrea roane. thank you for joining us. we made it to friday. angie goff is here with traffic. it's not friday light. >> no. >> and howard is here with the weather. >> we're back to reality. we need jackets and heaters tonight. it's april, folks. >> we won't need heaters. >> it will be in 30s in spots. >> blankets and cuddle. let's start with doppler 9 9,000hd with the cold front bringing relief from the warm weather we had early in the week. prince george's county, southern maryland and even staff ford might see a lingering shower. the front's coming through. we've got the showers and storms lining up from west to east. there you go. up and down the east coast, that's the front. behind it, the winds have shifted to the north and west.

now we're looking at a cooler atmosphere returning. we're in the 50s here in town, but quickly up to the 40s in gaithersburg. oakland is now at 32. it is a much chillier day ahead with the winds which now gusting upper teens and low 20s. that will be a factor, too. it will be a breezy, chilly day. mid-50s for highs. right now, 54, clouds are breaking up. it's time for traffic. >> time for traffic. time to keep you posted on what's going on, on the capital beltway. we begin with the morning on the inner loop. the ramp to go eastbound at 66. still impassable because of this crash activity. now we're starting to see the delays start around the gallows road exit up past 15. once you get to the marn legion or a little before that you are free flowing. on the 214 accident, i hear things are open there at

watkins glen road. hey d.c., we're tracking your new york inbound traffic and everything is moving well from the times building to the third street tunnel. 395 headed northbound, hey, virginia, we are moving at speed from the beltway past the pentagon to the 14th street bridge. back to you, andrea. just when we were getting used to the sunshine and 90 degree temperatures, the weather changed. it will be as howard said, in the 30s. last night, heavy rains and strong winds brought down trees and heavy rains overnight. kristin fisher is live in northeast washington with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, andrea. how would you like to wake up to this? check out this giant tree behind me. i'm standing at the intersection of neil street in northeast d.c. i'm going to walk across the street without hopefully getting run over. let me look both ways. i want to stand by this so you can sea how big this tree is.

check this out. it's huge. in the storm last night it clearly uprooted the entire tree. so much so that there's chunks of concrete lying all over the road. so this is just one of the many trees that were brought down in last night's storm. there was reports of trees double in capitol hill, in southeast d.c., northwest. of course where we are in northeast d.c. and trees down in arlington and even reports of people driving down neighborhoods in arlington and trees coming down crashing on top of the cars. incredibly, nobody was injured in all of this. certainly some property damages to deal with as people wake up this morning. in addition to all of these trees falling down, we've also got downed power lines. at the peak of the storm last night, dominion power was reporting more than 4,000 customers were without power. the good news this morning, we've got only a few hundred people without power in the

greater washington area. andrea, still a lot of minor damage around the d.c. area. i don't know if that's exactly minor for these people here. there aren't any broken windows or anything, but certainly some small structural damages people will have to deal with as they wake up this morning. back to you. >> exactly. and dealing with taking that tree down eventually. in fairfax county, six maryland men are accused of robbing two private poker parties. police say the men barged into two different homes wearing masks and carrying weapons. they say one of the men even wore a black t-shirt with the word police on it. the suspects stole cash, jewelry and credit cards from the victims. the crimes happened in burk and centreville last month. u.s. park police are investigating a new round of vandalism but focusing on an old suspect. officers say someone spray painted nazi hate message as long george washington parkway

near reagan washington national airport. they believe ronald e. bost, jr. is behind the crime. he was arrested several months ago. they since released him from jail. if you've seen him, call police. the global nuclear summit will be held next week and expect major traffic troubles. >> we will be moving motorcades throughout the city. it is important for the security for the entire event. >> leaders from 47 countries will descend on the nation's capitol. their goal? to help defeat terrorism by securing and removing highly enriched uranium from unsecured locations around the world. many heads of state will be shuttled from major arteries in the district. the event will mean road closures, parking restrictions and very heavy security. it is time for another living smart report. jessica doyle is back with tough times for college

graduates. >> that's right, andrea. the starting salaries this year for the college kids, they are not looking as big. they definitely lost some ground during this recession. the national association of colleges and employers say the average salary will be $47,600 this year, down 1.7% since last year, but it's much worse for liberal arts students down almost 9% to $33,900. positions in business management are down 8% but pulling up the average, students earning computer related degrees. they can make starting salaries of $58,700. that's up 5.8% since last year. meantime, 33 states have run out of money for jobless benefits. california has borrowed the most followed by michigan and then new york. it's time now for your money-saving tip of the day. there are a lot of green detergents on the market but are they worth the money?

top go eastbound on route 66 is closed. coming up a look on the conditions on the roads you travel early. stay with us. on the news now at 5:48, bulldozers continue searching for victims of the deadly mud slide in brazil. some are calling it the worst in 40 years because of the rains. bruce redman one of the producers of the cbs slow "survivor" is being considered a suspect in his wife's death. the producer and his wife were seen arguing two days before reporting her missing. his wife's body was discovered in a gutter at a resort where the couple vacationed. it took a lot of muscle to free a cow stuck in a storm drain. officials near salt lake city, utah don't know how the cow got there but it was stuck in the storm drain for three days. rescuers had to tear up the road so the cow could be pulled
