behind. down to 52 now at reagan national. 44 in winchester, 32 at oakland. it's also giving us a bit of a windchill, andrea. windchills under the 30s in the shenandoah valley. going up to the low 60s today. nice weekend ahead. right now, 6:00 and here's traffic. tgif, everybody. so glad you could join us early. it is a new hour and new day out on the inner loop because we have the good update for you. 66 headed eastbound, that ramp now finally opened after being closed for most of the morning because of an accident. we are still seeing lingering delays because of it. those are starting around the route 50 area. moving over to maryland, new hampshire avenue right now at lockwood drive, that is where we have crash activity going on. overall, though, very volume light out this way. same situation on route 4, route 5, crane highway going to the realtime graphics. it looks like all of the roads under the clear. just the typical volume is what we're seeing usually around this time.

395 from duke to seminary. things are slowing down just a bit, volume building. 95 before that it looks like your delay stretches from the prince george's parkway up toward the fairfax county parkway. andrea, back to you. at the top of the hour, we want to bring you the latest developments in that west virginia mine explosion. a renewed rescue attempt is underway right now. crews are making their way traying to find the four people missing since monday's deadly explosion. this latest effort began just tbr 2:00 this morning. we go live to sandra endo in west virginia with the latest on the search. good morning, sandra. >> reporter: well, good morning, andrea. in just about half an hour or so, we're expecting to hear official word on how the rescue operation going. with time and oxygen running out, they had to make a push. rescuers went back into the mine to find the four missing miners. another attempt, hoping for success. >> the plan is for two teams to

go underground and to visit both of those refuge chambers. >> reporter: state officials say this remains a rescue mission until the very end. the focus is still on getting to the two emergency chambers deep in the mine. then are the only pockets of salvation for the missing miners. >> if everything works right and as precise as they've been, we have a good chance of a miracle there. >> reporter: workers are pumping nitrogen into the area where they believe the missing miners could be. >> that's to ensure we wouldn't be chased out in case the barometer begins to drop. and we have an explosive mixture again. >> reporter: while the rescue mission is underway a more somber mission will be undercaken recovering the bodies of those who are confirmed dead. >> the intent is for the recovery teams to enter the mine in the same time frame and begin removing the bodies from the long wall and areas near the long wall. >> reporter: some families of mining victims are already planning funeral arrangements

while others are praying that rescuers will find their missing loved ones. >> this may be the darkest days or darkest weeks in a long time. they may not have a whole lot of hope themselves. if they can't have hope, we have to have hope for them. >> reporter: and at least four funerals are planned for today. and the ceo of massey energy says the company will be paying for all of those miners' funerals. live in west virginia, i'm sandra endo. andrea, back to you. >> sandra, you said the rescuers started at about 2:30 and an undate at 6:30. so that's four hours. how long do they estimate before they get to the chamber where's, hopefully, the four miners could be? >> reporter: according to the last update from state officials here, they say they have found an alternate route to get to the chambers faster and anticipated that rescue workers, if all goes well, could reach those chambers in

an hour and a half. so we are presuming they under there and perhaps have news for us in a half hour or so. so of course we'll bring you the very latest as it becomes available. >> sandra endo reporting from west virginia. a controversial group is also in west virginia saying the miners' deaths are because god hates america. the church is known for protesting the funerals of soldiers. several members arrived in charleston yesterday. a crowd of 300 people held a counterprotest. now back to the weather. those storms that move through overnight with kristin fisher tracking the storm aletter. that tree is leaning behind you. >> reporter: i know, andrea. check this out. it's absolutely huge. this is just one of the many trees that were taken down during last night's storms. you know, for all of you just now waking up and heading outside for the first time this morning, what you can expect to

see is lots of branches and debris littering the sidewalks and roads. another thing i want to point out is power lines. as i was driving here, ways noticing lots of signal lights are flashing because of so many power outages last night. so check this out. this is one of the many trees that fell down during last night's storm. i want to show you guys another tree that we were able to film. this was shot on wisconsin and massachusetts on the st. awlden school grounds. we've had reports of trees down on northeast, northwest, capitol hill in particular. there are also several reports of trees falling on top of cars in arlington. so lots of things for crews to deal with as they wake up this morning. now, in addition to trees being brought down by the high winds and rain, there's a ton of

power outages. dominion power was reporting 4,000 customers were without power. there's only a few hundred without power so they have made progress through the night. andrea, you can certainly expect to see quite a bit of debris on the ground this morning. back to you. >> kristin, thank you. in other news, family, friends and fellow officers will say good-bye to officer ayala who died on sunday while responding to a call. the funeral is closed to the public. routes 201 in olney will be shut down between 7:30 this morning until 12:30 this afternoon. the funeral procession will then make its way to timonium. the washington-based diplomat from qatar who sparked a mid-airplane scare will be sent home. the diplomat is muhammad

mohammed al-madadi. when asked about a smoky smell, he joked to a flient attendant -- flight attendant that he was trying to light his shoes on fire. that sparked an incident. some say the move to send him home is the right one. >> not only should he know better, he's been here for some time. he is the son of a diplomat. he grew up there. >> passengers say things were handled calmly. some didn't even know there was a problem until the jet landed. the wizard's gilbert areenis will work with at-risk youth as part of his sentence. areenis will work with young offenders in the juvenile justice system. he must perform 400 hours of community service as part of his sentence on gun charges. areenis will do that service at d.c.'s facility in laurel, maryland. he'll also serve 30 days at a halfway house in montgomery county. it's coming up on 8 after

rochon, who i met yesterday at bethesda. i told them about 6:30 this morning, so i hope they are up. so let them know that i said had hello. >> i had a lot of support when i had the back surgery. thank you for the support. hagerstown had trees down and rainfall from 0.4 of an inch and to over an inch in janet in reidville. a lot of rain, a lot of wind and this morning we're calmer. we're seeing the rain pulling away out of the eastern shore. we're done in washington and just south and east a little sprinkle we're watching right now. one shower is just about to push into the bay of the eastern shore. easton, you are not done with the rain yet, but you will be shortly. we'll keep moving for you as you go off into charles county now and right across the river.

we've got that one little shower south of quantico. i don't want to show you my back, but this will drift across part of charles county as well. in southern maryland and lower eastern shore coming out of the northern neck that's all that's left. quickly this stuff is pulling away. the front is pulling away, breezy. low 60s at best today. maybe around 60. tomorrow low, possibly even mid-60s. notice the predominance of sunshine as high temperatures make it into the lower 70s. the bus stop forecast this morning, sunshine north and west with clouds lingering south and west. 40s and 50s out there. yesterday 83. today maybe 60, 61. northwest winds at 10 to 20 miles per hour. tonight, it's going to be chilly if not downright cold as some lows west of town drop

and georgia already. moving to 270 headed southbound, stretching from 118 germantown road to 370. we're also tracking traffic in virginia on 66. headed eastbound. a whole lot of taillights here between 50 and 123 stop and go. we also want another live look at the beltway where we are seeing the volume front leftover from the accident at the 66 ramp. that backup starts around route 50. new york avenue getting word of power out. so watch out for traffic signals that are either out or on flash. meanwhile, your delay, no surprise here between "the times" building and bladensburg road. now back to you. at 6:17, we have a commuter la letter for you -- alert for you. roads around the convention center will be closed because of a multinational nuclear summit being held here.

it starts sunday night. parking will be banned for blocks ash the convention center. the mount vernon square metro station will be closed. we have a list of closures and des on our web site under extras at wusa9.com. you'll soon be able to access information from your metro smart trip card online. metro's board of directors gave preliminary approval thursday to the plan. it could be in place by july. you would be able to check your smart trip card balance and add value to it from the web. we're learning more about what metro riders said about the recent public hearings. metro is working on ways to close a $190 million budget gap. our partners report that 79% we spoke to at metro oppose service cuts. 70% are in favor of increasing fares to make ends meet. that may be one way metro brings in more within money 59% also wants local governments to give more funding to metro.

as well. kirstin, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. how would you like to wake up to this giant tree on top of your home this morning? that's what several people along neil lane are having to deal with. i want to show you all exactly what we're talking about here. want to make sure i'll not be run over. this tree, when it was uprooted, it took out huge chunks of the sidewalk here. look at the roots all the way down. definitely quite the chore to get this sidewalk back to normal and get this tree out of here. this is just one of the many trees that were taken down by the nye high winds last night. i want to interzeus you all to -- come on over here to paula lee, correct? >> yes. >> reporter: and paula lee is for better or for worse this is her home this pink burgundy home that the tree fell on.

when did this happen? >> about 8:15 last night. actually, i was in the tub. but nationwide said 7:00 they are going to have somebody from a tree company come and they will need a train because he went by and looked at it. that's what i'mtrying to tell you guys, move at 7:00. >> reporter: you seem in. >> spirits about the whole thing. >> i am blessed. he loves fools and babies. i guess i'm the fool. >> reporter: he just got your bed and your room, and dodged you. >> yes. >> reporter: sorry about the downed tree. andrea, this is what a lot of people are having to deal with this morning. lots of trees falling down in the winds and heavy rain last night. also tons of power outages, not nearly as many as the thousands we were seeing last night. on a few hundred people are still without power this morning. back to you. >> all right, kristin, thank you. now to the latest on the mine explosion in west virginia. while you slept, rescue teams restarted their search for four missing miners. they are holding out hope the group survives. 25 people died in the explosion

monday. rescue teams have been trying since then to get back into the mine to see if there are survivors. nitrogen is being pumped into the mines to neutralize the toxic gas. >> i believe the families are relieved and knowing the process has started and the end will be near. >> we committed to the families that we wanted to get within the chambers within 96 hours. we're trying to do everything within our power to do that. >> president obama wants answers on the explosion. he's asking mine safety officials to report by next week on the cause of the blast. a group of six men is in police custody this morning in fairfax county. investigators say the group targeted a poker game inside a home. the six men are accused of stealing cash, jewelry and credit cards. police say they raided the card game along clover dale park and court, tied up the people and

robbed them. police arrested the men then told fairfax county police about them. >> they contacted fairfax county police because they found what they felt was evidence of robberies that may have occurred in fairfax county. these were i.d.s with fairfax county addresses, credit cards, that sort of thing. >> investigators want to know how the suspects knew about the card games and whether they committed any similar robbierys. lawmakers will vote today on a major cell phone ban preventing you from using a hand held phone while driving anywhere in the straight. the bill already passed the senate. a fire in a bar sent lawmakers running. they were celebrating last night in o'brien's bar in annapolis. the security team smelled smoke and escorted the governor out. the fire was small. no one was hurt. time for another living smart report. jessica doyle is here with the

long-term outlook on our region's economy. >> it is looking really, really good. we can't complain. the washington region's economy will double in size over the next 20 years. area growth will be among the fastest in the country. we will be third only behind atlanta and dallas/fort worth. also, the changes will bring in more than a million new jobs. that trend will force local leaders to figure out how to accommodate all of the new people. the study was conducted by the 2030 group, a nonprofit think tank founded by area businessmen. apple's update for the iphone and ipad will be available this summer to allow users to use more than one application at a time. apple said yesterday that it has sold 450,000 ipads so far. having trouble paying your tax bill this year? we've got a couple of options for you. the irs accepts credit cards. know you will pay a processing
