mental handicap and the mental capacity of a six-year-old child. >> natalie williams serving as a spokesperson for the victim and family of the alleged attack. >> the teacher was out of control at this time. >> the family says he grabbed the basketball and threw it at the face of the teenager. >> he then picked the child up, threw him into the bleachers, as the child attempted to get up, the assaulting teacher grabbed him once again and threw him back into the bleachers for a second time. >> family spokesperson, natalie williams says the teachers aid identified only as mr. davis attacked the mentally handicapped student in the gymnasium in front of other teachers. the family says other students and teachers pleaded for him to stop, but he kept on. >> this teacher assaulting teachers out of control. he comes around and then proceeds to hit the student once again in the back of his head in the front of his head first, then to the back of his head.

>> the family wants to know why their child was not taken to the nurse's office. why security did not respond, and why the school failed to notify the parents immediately. >> you can't imagine that something like this can happen at a school nowadays, but just surprised that nothing has come home from this. >> prince georges county of public schools chief communications officer tells 9news now, the case has been referred to tell the welfare authorities. lesli. >> they hadn't heard anything from the school. is that the case? did anything go home at all? >> no. the school district did send home this letter informing the parents of a change in leadership that principal is on personal leave for an indefinite amount of time, but again, no -- >> did they explain why? >> no word whether or not if it is a direct result of what happened. the alleged incident. all right alex, thank you for that. well the catholic church

sex abuse scandal hits close to home. retired cardinal was scheduled to celebrate the latin mass on saturday at the basilica of the national shrine of the immaculate conception. now he has been replaced. agreed to find a replacement. advocates for victims of sexual abuse objected because he wrote a letter in 2001 congratulating a french bishop for shielding a priest convicted of raping minors. court records reveal there may be romantic relationships linked to basketball players. tyrone hall is accused of shooting to death brandon carol and wounding teammate, ellis heartridge. they were once involved with the same woman. according to police, hall says he shot carol and heartridge during a confrontation. a public viewing for murdered principal bets. more than a thousand of people

it started on chestnut avenue, where authorities try to capture a man wanted for attempted murder. he reportedly ran the sheriff's vehicle while trying to escape. the suspect eventually ran into a house on 9th street after a long standoff. police fired tear gas into the home. they found the suspect hiding in the basement. there were no serious injuries. new at 6:00, probags for starving a baby. a woman convicted of starving her one-year-old son to death gets a suspended sentence and probation. prosecutors say a religious cult convinced ria to starve her baby because the boy would not say amen after a prayer. on top of that, her plea agreement contained an extraordinary provision, if her son is resurrected, the plea would be withdrawn. more now on the child abuse case of dr. earl bradley. his trial date has been set for early next year. bradley is charged with raping or sexually abusing more than 100 children who went to his pediatric office in delaware. jury selection will begin on

february 14. the trial will start on february 21. tonight, the search continues for 11 people still missing after an oil rig explosion off the coast of louisiana. that rig was still burning this morning after being rocked by the blast late last night. most of the workers either escaped or were rescued by the coast guard. seven were taken to the hospital. now there is concern that rig could topple into the sea. >> it will be a huge salvage project, the size of this rig is incredible. so, it is going to be a massive recovery. >> once the fire is completely out, coast guard teams will begin cleaning off the wreckage. >> air travel is slowly returning to normal. they reopened air space, after the amount of ash in the air dropped to safer levels. the volcano is still active, but it is no longer sending ash miles into the air. a cartoon is sparking outrage. one group says the creators of

hand. the official scrutiny of the police department that had that video is a long way from being finished. scott broome is at the university of maryland with a first look at the video in question. scott. >> yeah, they just gave it to us this afternoon. university officials say because they released it to us, they have nothing to hide. that's proof of that, but lawyers from the student involved in this police beating case who subpoenaed this case to start with say they are going to wait for the outcome of a police investigation before drawing any judgments into this. let me show you this video. it's fuzzy, it's of events on knox road leading up to the riot police beating. university of maryland police say they just found it yesterday and they didn't give it to the lawyers at first because they thought that all copies had been erased. >> the 90 minute gap was, we believe the technicians are failed to copy that, when we transmitted with the subpoena. >> of the 15 or so cameras that we received, it was the one camera, the most important

camera that was omitted. again, they say it's a mistake, but it's a coincidence that raises enough questions that one would hope that it is thoroughly investigated. the curiosity is heightened by the fact the police officer in charge of video surveillance on a night of the beating happens to be married to one of the mounted police officers who is at the scene of the beating. university officials say she recuesed herself from handling the video once lawyers subpoenaed the tape. in the words of administrative officials, she is beyond question in their opinion. as for the video release today, it doesn't even show the beating. that happened to be captured on a youtube video captured by a student. the circumstances of how it disappeared is now the focus of a state police investigation into how the university of maryland police handled all this. reporting live at the university of maryland, scott broome, 9news now. >> lighting a fire under metro

cortizone-10 -- feel the heal. in our consumer follow up, it is finally talk to cash in on your state appliance rebate program. maryland rolls out its program tomorrow, which just so happens to be the 40th anniversary of earth day. virginia residents will be able to reserve their rebate online beginning april 28. and the district's appliance program will start in late may. lawmakers try to get to the bottom of problems within metro at a congressional hearing today. the federal transit administration revealed their audit and offered 21 recommendations, i should say, they include complete restructuring of safety and communication at the transit agency. >> this is a dysfunctional system, isn't it? >> it needs work. that is, there is real bad blood and hostility between some operating departments.
