good morning. i'm andrea roane. been person is here with weather. angie goff has traffic. let's begin with howard. he has a few sprinkles out there. >> nothing. we had hail a couple of days ago, we had tornado warnings yesterday in saint mary's county to the south and big thunderstorms and a couple of sprinkles, come on, guys, nothing. go to the weather computer and show you what is happening. the storm is pulling away. this morning we are left with stuff in the delmarva and on live doppler 9000 hd we have some very light sprinkles which are falling across fairfax county, arlington, montgomery county. coming down 270 and off to the east approaching davidsonville there in anne arundel county. very light this morning and that's it. let's talk about the temperatures. it is trying to cool down but the cloud cover in the mid-50s in most spots. 40s in the mountains. the winds are kicking up out of

you to know about construction on kenilworth area it is where it meets the capital beltway. some bridge repair is going on. watch for road crews. back to you. >> thank you. a group of prince georges county residents is upset that county police arrested a woman and then turned her over for possible deportation. the group staged a peaceful protest outside of the correctional center. the group is not happy the county entered in to such a collaborative arrangement with federal immigration officials. later today jeffrey best, the fifth suspect in the deadly shooting on south capitol street is due in court. officers arrested the 21-year- old yesterday morning and charged him with five counts of murder. dc police have four other people behind bars with alleged connections to the crime. the shooting left four people dead and five others wounded. a frostburg state college

student shot to death has been laid to rest. loved ones said good-bye to brandon carroll. his funeral was in brandywine, maryland on monday. police say tyrone hall shot carroll and another student ellis hartridge outside of his campus apartment. hall says he shot the pair in self defense. funeral services for dr. height will begin today when the civil rights icon lies in repose at the national council of nero women headquarters. it will be open from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. on pennsylvania avenue in northwest. dr. height died last week at howard university hospital at age 98. she led the council of negro women for 40 years. today's memorial is the start of days of tribute to height. her funeral service is set for thursday at national cathedral. updating a story we brought you on monday, several students at george mason university are

upset that the school failed to tell them about a sexual assault on campus. a freshman told police the alleged attack happened at 5:00 a.m. on sunday in madison hall. officers say the victim knew the person and the pair had been out together on a date on saturday. some students who live in the coed dorm said no one notified them about the incident even though the campus has a text message system for an emergency. >> i got a message from my friend and she said there was supposedly a sexual assault in madison and i live in madison and i'm like what are you talking about. >> it did not seem appropriate at the time. we would have been taking that step if there was an unknown assailant attacking people at random. >> reporter: investigators say the accused student, another freshman is cooperating. so far, no charges have been filed. democrats say they plan to keep the pressure on republicans after monday's vote to start debate on financial

reform failed. joel brown is on captiol hill where another vote on the legislation could happen today. >> on this vote, the yeas are 57, the nays are 41. >> reporter: republicans stay united and succeeded in slowing down the democrats financial reform bill. the vote to start debate on the measure failed on the senate floor. >> we're negotiating for a better piece of legislation. >> reporter: in fact republican senator richard shelby and republican senator chris dodd held one on one meetings until the vote on monday evening trying to find common ground. one republican vote would have tipped the scale. >> it appears if all the republicans have decided the rules in place now are the rules we should have going forward. that's what happens if we don't do it. >> reporter: but republicans insist they, too, want reform, they just want to go about it differently. democrats say the consumer protection agency created by their bills would protect

americans from predatory mortgage loans and offers. republicans say it is too expensive and powerful. >> and democrats say it sets up a fund paid for by the banks to unwind failing financial firms republicans say it gives regulators too much leeway to prop up the banks when they take too much risk. >> we're not going to be rushed in to another massive bill based on the assurances of our friends on the other side. >> reporter: democrats pledge they will introduce the bill again. republicans say they may sponsor their own version. which ever passes the senate will have to be merged with the house version before it becomes law. joel brown, cbs news, washington. here in maryland the gubernatorial vase starting to heat up. current governor o'malley will kick off his re-election campaign in largo, maryland this afternoon. o'malley will embark on a state- wide tour with lieutenant governor brown. the pair leads ehrlich by four points in the latest poll.

northrop grumman is moving corporate headquarters to virginia. it is not certain where in virginia but governor mcdonnell will come to arlington tomorrow to make the announcement. northrop grumman headquarters currently have 300 people. they provide aerospace, electronics information, shipbuilding and technical services. both virginia and maryland are in the top ten rankings of states with mortgage fraud. maryland is sixth in the 2009 rankings while virginia is tenth. compared to last year, maryland is lower but just one spot and virginia rooked up to 24th in 2008. in the news now, crews are racing to seal off an under water oil well that is spilling 42,000-gallons a day in to the gulf of mexico. the well began to leak after it

exploded last week. repair crews are trying to use a remote control sub to reach the well head. it could reach the shore in as little as three days. the brother of the late polish president says he will run in the election to replace his twin killed in a plane crash earlier this month. he says he will continue the mission of his brother and the others who died in the crash. manuel noriega is in france to face money laundering charges. united states extradited him after french authorities accused him of squandering $3 million in proceeds by purchasing luxury apartments in paris. coming up on 9 news now, will the federal reserve raise interest rates? we will have the answer in "living smart "in two minutes. we'll be right back. ♪

washington. another check on your roads coming up. it is time for our first "living $mart" report of the morning. jessica doyle is off today. we have a "living $mart" business headlines. >> reporter: goldman sachs ceo is likely to face questions about fraud charges today. lawmakers are holding hearing about the role of banks in the financial meltdown but goldman is under new scrutiny. charges were filed earlier this month accusing it of misleading investors before the financial crisis. goldman stock has lost 15% since the sec announced its case. the federal reserve will meet to discuss rates. a decision will be announced tomorrow. the fed is expected to keep rates unchanged at near 0% where they have been the last 1 months. wall street will get earnings reports from 3 m, and u.p.s. on monday, stocks finished little changed.

the dow gained less than one point and the nasdaq lost seven. competition is heating up many the market for electronic readers. for the first time barns and noble the nook reader rang up more sales than the kindle last month. a report says 53% of e-readers shipped in march were nooks. consumers were able to test them out at best buy stores which may explain the jump in stores. the kindle has been available at the company's website but they have announced it will be sold at target stores. still to come on 9 news this morning the cdc says almost half of americans either have hypertension, diabetes or high cholesterol. find out how these life- threatening conditions can be reversed. almost done with the rain but still need the jackets in the second half of the week. going to be summer like. the details when 9 news now

it's coming up on 4:45. we have been dealing with a lot of rain this this past few days but luckily haven't had problems like waynesboro, tennessee. it a stretch of the highway had to be closed after a part of the roadway washed away. it is 20 feet across and 40 feet deep. nothing like that has happened to us. >> no. we had a quarter to a half an inch generally. some areas a little more than that and we know that a couple of nights ago, sunday evening the storms were training from west virginia through frederick county where they had flood warnings, too. down there they had several inches of rain and that causes those problems for them and for us minor problems this morning. >> things are improving. >> oh, yes. and the sec half of the week a lot of smiles. show you what is happening on live doppler 9000 hd. we have a few light showers

across the metro and the upper part of the bay. we will zoom in and show you light sprinkles from eastern fairfax county, west of national airport over to crystal city and the pentagon down to mount vernonen and accokeek. this is moving to the southeast. over to charles county, just about to la plata. it is moving in that direction. i want to go up to maryland and montgomery county, oh, east first, sorry. over to the bay a couple of light sprinkles out and about here in annapolis. most of us from chester and chester town up north here that is quickly leaving and the final stop is to the north in montgomery county. little sprinkles here on the east side of clarksburg and germantown in to gaithersburg and rockville and at the potomac approaching the split here and montgomery mall seeing light showers this morning. get to the forecast first. we are looking at temperatures on the cool side today and tomorrow. it will be breezy with sunny breaks for sure today. much manufacture sun tomorrow. kind of windy and 63 and then a

55 manassas. there's the warm spots but a lot of 55s across the southern. brandywine and columbia at 54. reagan national 55. we have a wind which is north northwest at 14 an a gust topping 20 miles an hour in spots. the barometer is rising 29.29. big storm on the west coast. i want to show you this quickly. look at the rain moving in to northern california. little storm in the middle. there's snow still falling here in late april across ontario and quebec. that will be moving in to new england. washington could pick up a foot of snow in new hampshire and the low pressure pulls away. still with the breeze behind it and that's going to be the case the next couple of days. very brisk northwest winds. but once we get rid of that, look at the seven-day forecast. we are cool today and tomorrow. breezy to windy. mid to low 60s today and tomorrow. here's the recovery, thursday

a great example of that nice, quiet drive through the district. back to you. hopefully the traffic will be getting better for alexandria residents soon. fairfax county supervisors will decide today whether or not to expand telegraph road near ft. belvoir. the proposed expansion will widen the road from four lanes down to the intersection of south van doren street. it would cost $10 million to complete the the work. the centers for disease control is out with a new survey of the nation's health and the results are shocking. almost half of all americans have at least one of three life- threatening conditions, hypertension, diabetes or high cholesterol. obesity, lack of exercise and poor diet play a large role, but as anita brikman tells us that means they can be reversed. >> reporter: some a person on any street in america and chances are you will find a chronic health problem. >> little high on the cholesterol. >> have high cholesterol, yes.

>> reporter: this man has high blood pressure. >> hopefully i can get off this medication. >> reporter: and they have plenty of company. the centers if for disease control has startling data about the state of our health. 45% of americans, almost half of the entire adult population have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes, conditions that are killing us. >> each one of these conditions is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which is one of the leading causes of death in the u.s. >> reporter: the cause, signs point to america's growing waistline. we are eating too much and exercising too little. the latest statistics show one- third of americans are obese. >> you eat a lot of fast food and you are always on the run and don't make good food choices you could end up in that situation. >> reporter: the study reveals one in seven adults don't know they are dealing with these critical conditions that could shorten their lives if left untreated but there is good news. >> these are all conditions

that are treatable through ' through lifestyle changes. >> a message americans have heard time and time again but don't seem to be digesting. >> reporter: a revolutionary prostate cancer vaccine that could get fda approval as early as next week. it uses a patient's own treated white blood cells. in men with advanced prostate disease it extended their lives several months with virtually no side effects but some men lived two to three years. they think it could be even more powerful if given when prostate cancer is in the early stages. >> 16 food companies including kraft and heinz are cutting the salt reducing sodium in some products by 20%. this follows the fda limits that lowered the amount of salt in prepared and processed foods. a study says people with depression ate more chocolate than those who were not

exhibit outside from 7:30 in the morning to 3:00 in the afternoon every day. in maryland it is all about saving the turtles. 900 eastern box turtles have been relocated out of the path of the intercounty connector. they have been doing this since 2007. the first stretch of the highway connecting montgomery to prince georges county is scheduled to be complete by early next year. a small group of women showed up at dupont circle yesterday. they came to take part in an internet push to disprove an iranian cleric that claims all of the recent earthquakes can be blamed on too many women wearing skimpy outfits. alex trevino picks up the story. >> reporter: the rain did not spoil the party, protesters stood up. >> to show up and say i'm baring it for you, ladies. >> this is not what i normally do on my lunch hour.
