frustration along the gulf coast now that residents are getting a live look exactly at what is happening coming out of that underwater gusher. as joel brown reports from venice, louisiana, some contend british petroleum has lost all credibility everrability. >> reporter: thick oil is now washing ashore in populated areas and anger is growing that bp and the government aren't doing enough. >> we want them to get off their butts, excuse my french. i'm telling you you have to give us a permit. >> that is here. >> reporter: adding insult to injury, bp admits there is much more oil leaking than previously estimated. after a month the company finally provided a live feed of the gusher and only did so after pressure from lawmakers. >> bp has lost all credibility. >> i understand the

frustration. i snow people want more information and they want this thing to come to an end. >> 40,000 square miles of gulf waters are closed to commercial fishermen but oyster men were given a small window to work. jeff is racing the clock to pull in as much as he can. >> any day we could be shut down so every oyster counts right now. >> reporter: fishermen are also concerned about the chemical disbursements bp has been using. with tens of thousands of gallons used no one knows what the long-term impact will be on marine life. joel brown, cbs news, venice, louisiana. authorities at boston's logan airport took a jetblue pilot in to custody last night. the pilot allegedly e-mailed his girlfriend threatening to crash a plane if they didn't reconcile. tsa officials questioned the

man and took him in for a psychiatric evaluation. jetblue, which flies in to dulles released a statement saying a pilot had been removed for health-related reasons and that no one was ever in any danger. on july 27th, the national transportation safety board is expected to issue its final report on the investigation in to last year's deadly metro red line crash. nine people were killed when one train slammed in to the back of another, approaching the fort totten station. the ntsb is reviewing findings in three other metro accidents, including one in january that killed two maintenance technicians. a crash in the west falls church rail yard and a derailment at the farragut north station. it's shaping up to be another roller coaster day on wall street. investors are concerned that europe's money troubles could spell trouble for the u.s. economy. we have the latest from the new york stock exchange. >> reporter: stocks dropped

sharply at the opening bell with the dow quickly skidding below the 10000 mark. >> everything is getting soft and turning a little negative. >> reporter: after the initial slide, the markets started to bounce between positive and negative territory as investors eye a list of economic concerns. greece is struggling to gets finances in control and stop the debt crisis from spreading and while stronger neighbors like germany and france have come forward to help it has a flip side. they worry those countries will now be saddled with debt. >> this kind of gray area, the area of the unknown which translates in to lack of confidence is a real key when it comes to investing. >> reporter: traders arrived this morning ready for a rocky day. on top of everything else, certain trading contracts expire today making for extra disturb lens. traders are sifting through the details of the finance reform

bill congress approved last night. it is designed to help main street, but will it hurt wall street the government could cut off some of the banking industry's profits. president obama say that is not his intention. >> our goal is not to punish the banks but to protect the economy and the american public from the upheavals of the last few years. >> reporter: with uncertainty the stocks are down 5% since last friday and for shell- shocked investors the weekend can't come soon enough. cbs news, wall street. dc's deputy medical examiner is expected to take the stand today in the robert wone death trial. wone was found stabbed to death in a dewpoint circle townhouse in 2006. three men living in that house are on trial. they are not charged in his murder but charged with tampering with evidence. yesterday the first paramedic on the scene testified there was little blown blood on wone

despite stab wounds to his chest. funeral services are going on right now for alonte sutton. he's the 18-year-old city council intern who was shot to death earlier this month. that service is being held at allen chapel ame church in southeast washington. police have charged 22-year-old omare cotton with sutton's murder. efforts to fix the problem of lead in tap water in the district actually put 9,000 homes at a higher risk of lead poisoning. that's one of the findings from a congressional report. a hearing was held on the hill on thursday. it found the cdc used flawed data to assure city residents six years ago their tap water was safe. a lot of questions focus on whether the water is safe to drink now. the dc water and sewer authority says yes. >> all the monitoring we are doing is showing the numbers in our distribution system are well below the areas of concern. i must say we want no lead in

the system. we have an aggressive program to eliminate lead. >> reporter: wasa is offering free tests of tap water to ensure its safety. a proposal to tax soda in the district has gone flat, at least for now. that's because council members oppose the proposal during budget talks. they want to tax sports drinks, teas and sodas at a penny an ounce. it could generate $9 million to spend on healthy school initiatives. council members are considering extending the 6% sales tax to drinks when it votes on the budget next week. we have just learned today that the lion cub born tuesday at the national zoo has died. the male cub was found dead in the lions den last night. tests show it died from pneumonia that was caused by straw the zookeepers use for bedding. be careful on the road today. drivers will be sharing space with bicyclists for the annual

bike to work day. 9 news now kristin fisher checked in on some participants this morning at freedom plaza. >> reporter: look at all these bike and you can see dc has one of the biggest bike to work events in the country. nearly 9,000 people in the washington area will be riding their bikes to and from work today and many will be meeting right here in freedom plaza for this big bike rally. big bikes, small bikes, lech africa bias bikes. they were scattered across freedom plaza while the owners of the bikes enjoyed free food and mingled with other riders. they estimate 20% of these participants are riding their bikes to work for the first time on friday. this man rode his bike from bowie, maryland to downtown dc. >> normally do not bike to work because the roads in prince georges county are too treacherous. i don't climb on ladders every day either. you just have to do this once in a while. >> i bike to work every morning

around 75 for a high. current temperatures are 82 right here. 84 already in baltimore. easton is 81. parts of delmarva hugging the bay. pax river 79. jan in reedville called to say 76 her way. that was 35 minutes ago. 80s are cropping up out there. the satellite and radar together. a few clouds here. that's what we will see the rest of the day. the storms to the west over the appalachians, it will keep them at bay. one or two rays of sunshine. a few more clouds building in. even through saturday it is looking good. this is the noon hour. we start to move the main batch of storms closer but most of that will wind up west of here. we go overnight on saturday in to sunday. i think that's where we get a wave of storms to come through. scattered storms and once again on sunday. possibility of more scattered thunderstorms popping up. when i talk about a scattered thunderstorm i'm saying one here, here and here. not a big batch of rain moving

georgetown. exciting day but when i was here last i was getting ready to do the trip to india. in fact i went with smile train and people watched the show know know me more for the facelifting and things like that that i do but i went to india and corrected cleft lips and palates for deserving young kids. one of the best things i ever done. >> it had to be transforming to see the difference you can make. >> in that country maternal fetal kind of medical care we have. smile train is slowly but slurly catching up and eventually will fix everyone's cleft lip and palate. >> that is an effort that never seems to have a shortage of doctors that can pitch in. >> we love doing that. we have trained as plastic and reconstructive surgeons and as we get busy in our practices, we do less reinstructive but this is putting my talents and

experience to the best possible good and i -- just talking about it again i feel good about myself. and it is mental health month. and we talk about it on the show that doing something for somebody else, something chart ritable, putting yourself second is one of the best things you can do to make you feel better inside and help your mental health. >> reporter: isn't it true that being grateful for what you have, isn't that part of your mental health and makes you feel good. >> so much so. that being there in india each and people have so much less, just the basic things but they were happy and appreciative. it was a wakeup call for that point of view, too. a feel good trip and a great organization but they put that money to good use. they change the lives of the deserving young kids. >> talk about feel good, your show, the doctors, has been nominated for an emmy and you are in good company. >> we are in great company.
