is now reported to have died of his injuries. the runway is a new one, it only opened ten days ago. the weather was murky at the time and the early monsoon rains have begun, but visibility was acceptability. one report says that the pilot realized he was two to going ov the runway and was trying to get airborne again when a wing clipped the hillside. the data boxes have been recovered and an investigation has begun. >> mark phillips in london for us. thanks for the update. now to the oil spill in the gulf of mexico. globs of oil are washing ashore damaging louisiana's fragile coastal wetlands and closing a popular beach destination. mark strassmann is live just south of new orleans with the very latest. >> reporter: good morning. more of a froth thi oily mix washed up here on to the beach overnight. but i got to tell you, it's not nearly as thick this oil as what

we saw up and down these beaches when we first came here yesterday. still, terrible timing for grand isle, this is the start of their tourist season and this beach and many prime fishing areas are closed and closed indefinitely. and more oil is on its way. on grand isle beach, the spill has come ashore and much more could be on its way. is it this thick all over? >> this hick all over. >> reporter: the police chief. >> look at the beach. do you see anybody cleaning up? >> reporter: he's angry. he says for days leaders here warned bp the oil was coming. >> so far they have not done anything. they have not picked up a quart of oil yet. >> reporter: nothing at all? >> nothing at all. now it's coming to the beach. >> reporter: and no one knows quite what to do about plugging this gushing pipeline quickly. even bp now admits far more than 5,000 barrels leak into the gulf every day. by some estimates, it's 20 times as much. >> the american people want this

leak plugged now. they are outraged. this is an all hands on deck crisis. >> reporter: oil now stains 53 miles of coastal louisiana. more wildlife is dying including h brown pelican, louisiana's state bird. on grand isle, monique south worries more wildlife will soon dial. if you look done there and you see boom, oily boom -- >> somebody has to fix it. there's nothing you can do. there's not much you can do but just watch it come. >> reporter: now it looks it wouldn't be until tuesday until bp tries its latest fix, the top kill approach. they would shoot heavy mud down the gushing well, seal it with concrete, hoping to stop more oils from reaching shore lines like this one. >> mark strassmann, thank you. the oil spill continues to spread along the gulf coast and it's an anxious time in southern

florida. just a week before the memorial day holiday, florida governor clairely crist has declared a state of emergency in the area. so is it safe to go into the the water? joining us now exclusively from tallahassee, florida is governor crist. good morning to you, governor. >> good morning. good to be with you this morning. >> i want to ask you, first of all, what prompted you to extend the state of emergency down to the florida coastline when it comes to southern florida? >> the evidence that we got from noaa that in fact some of the oil, we don't know how much, is in the loop current. the loop current could bring down to south florida through the florida straits and then friday it around the southern coast up to the east coast and the counties that we declared a state of emergency. i thought it was smart to stand up the emergency operation center, that they get the boom that they need, and that's i didn't extended the declaration of emergency for south florida. >> when do you expect or perhaps when do you fear the oil will

reach the shore there in florida? >> we really don't know. things look good for the memorial day weekend. i've been out on the beaches in the panhandle, i'll be out there again later today. i was in miami just yesterday morning. the beaches are beautiful. the water is clean. the restaurants are open. the hotels are anxious for people to come down and the fish are biting. so it's a good time to come to florida. please come down. things look good so far. and we'll try to protect our beaches as much as we possibly can and pray to god. >> things look good so far, but have you already seen economic impact on florida's tourism? >> in fact, we have. last week when i was in the panhandle, some of the boat chartered captains told me that their phones were not ringing, that they were experiencing a slowdown, if you will, as it related to their business. we're concerned about the tourism industry in florida. 85 million people a year after all come to visit the beauty of the sunshine state. we want them to continue to be able to do that. so far so good. and we'll be prepared and doing everything we can to protect our beautiful state.

>> governor, as you stay optimistic, i want to ask you about this. bp's chief operating officer told cbs news just yesterday that in a worst case a their i don't, the leak may not be stopped until early august. what's your reaction to that? >> that would be the worst case scenario, no question about it. as always, we prepare for the worst, but we hope and pray for the best. we're used to handling emergencies in florida because of all the hurricanes we've had and i dare say we've got the best emergency management division on the plan either. very proud of the great work that they do, the preparation they've put into place. we've also activated the florida national guard. we have 2500 troops at the ready should we need them in order to help protect our beaches or to help us clean it up as quickly as possible. >> governor crist, we thank you for your time. >> thank you. now a closer look inside this oil story. >> as bp works to stop the gulf oil spill, there's been no

shortage of suggested solutions including one by kevin costner. cost they're idea and others share a common technology, the use of centrifugal force. professor, good morning. this whole theory, people think oil and water, they don't mix. we're really kind of blowing that theory out. >> that's not the case at all. lava lamps and things like that, we've been brainwashed to think that oil and water don't mix. but let me create an oil slick of our own. this is motor oil. look at that. they seem to be separate. cooking oil, they go right to the top. so what's the problem? what's the problem that kevin costner and the cleanup crews will face? the problem is this. emull city filed oil and water. shampoo, mayonnaise, lotion,

creams, most of your kitchen cabinet is actually emull city filed water and soil. they do mix.sified water and soil. they do mix. we have emulsified water and they do mix. so it's a misconception that oil and water never mix. >> so this is the problem with the gulf. it's not a surface issue. and that's why all those things out there are really not holding much weight and not doing a lot of the help that they were originally intended to do because now like i said, the water is all mixed. so how do you fix this problem? >> this is kevin costner and his brother's idea. why not increase gravity and then force gravity to push the heavier stuff down and push the lighter stuff up. here's a pail of water. normally when you lift it upside down, you get all water. here's where centrifugal force comes in. if i start to spin a pail of water fast enough and go right

overhead, it won't fall out. watch this. you see? >> yep. >> this is physics in action. >> and essentially this centrifugal force, this will separate. i want to show video, as well, just to give you an idea. these machines that kevin costner is talking about, they're huge vacuum cleaners. they have about 26 of them. they suck up the oily water, spin it around like what you were doing, one side spits out the oil, the other side spits out 99% pure water. so it sounds like a great plan in theory, but you say there's a problem here. >> 200 gallons per minute. that sounds great. but the oil slick is as big as the state of connecticut. you need hundreds, hundreds of these ships with these machines to begin to pump the water and separate it. we have to get real and that is the slick is gar began chewen in size and 26 or so machines just don't cut it. it too little too late. >> exactly what the people of louisiana and florida do not

want to hear. thank you very much. we appreciate it. now rebecca jarvis at the news desk. good morning. the mothers of three american hikers held in iran on espionage charges are on their way home. the mothers had been in iran since wednesday hoping to win the release of their children after ten months of captivity. on friday, u.s. forces released two iranians held in iraq raising hopes a deal might be in the works. the u.s. maintains it is not offering a direct swap. another roller coaster ride on wall street this week. stocks surged back up on friday with the dow jones industrial average gaining 125 points closing at 10,193. but for the week, the dow lost about 4%. and index remains near its low for the year. democratic leaders in congress predict president obama will sign a financial reform bill into law by july 4th. the senate passed its version of the legislation on thursday which includes the most far

reaching restrictions on major banks since the great deprsion. now the bill has to be reconciled with a version that was passed in the house in december. and the white house, well, there's a rodent that's been identified will. the creature that scurried in front of the president when he rose up to the garden podium on thursday, some people thought it was a mouse. but take a closer look. robert gibbs said that's a rat where i'm from. but the experts say it wasn't a mouse, it's actually a vole, a critter usually found in the meadows. it's about 14 minutes after the hour. here is lonnie quinn with our first check of the weather. and could you have called it a vole off the bat?e ei'm thinkin check the ger bill cage? it's out. let's draw your attention to wet weather around the hole say will that. also around portions of the northwest. but it's the midsection of the

inexpensive, it would be the gralt opportuni great opportunity to bring the kids on. >> it is an opportunity for employers, but the problem is that these jobs that are lower paying, temporary, they're going to the older workers who are unemployed or looking for supplementary income. and if you're a business owner, you want the person with more experience because now you can get it at a discounts. >> so let's talk about what teens can do. you say play up your teen specific skills. i didn't realize that short attention span was actually a possibility. >> there are advantages to being a teen. one is your flexibility. skol's out, so you have all day, you have weekends. bring that up when you're applying for jobs at places like the mall stores where traffic is busy on the weekends. retailers, pizzerias that have delivery. the other tip is play you have web specific skills. so go to your local mom and p for, the local dentist, plumber, these dentists would love to expand their presence on the

web. as a teen, you're well thinksed to positioned to do that. >> and reapply for your last job? >> 60% of your employers plan to rehire their staff from last summer this year. so reapply. the other thing that teens may not know about is that there's an uptick in some businesses this summer. for example, the local banks, some retailer, the amusement parks. so if you got rejected last summer, try again this summer. >> so ignore rejection. so you say if things. . if your chips are down, just keep plugging away. >> i think that's a good tip, yeah. >> how about federal jobs? >> what are federal jobs? for example, lifeguarding at a local military base in your area. the ymca, local community centers love to hire teens.

there are a lot of myths about when it's okay for new parents to be intimate again and just what to expect after the birth of baby. so this morning we're separating fact from fiction with our very own early show quiz and joining us is dr. lisa masterson, host of the doctors. good morning. >> good morning. happy to be here. >> there are a lot of questions, a lot of myths out there, so let's get to busting them. first up, the question is this. women should wait four to six

weeks after giving birth before having sex. is that true or false? >> true. in general, four to six weeks because the body has to heal. so that's what we really suggest in general. but you have to talk to your doctor because in case you have things like infections or things that may make it more difficult, it may be a little bit longer. i get mommies asking me for a prescription not to have sex. they go please, doctor, give it me so i don't have to have section. but in general, four to six weeks. >> if you had a c-section, do you still have to wait is th? >> true, you still have to wait. a lot of women who want elect difference c-section, no, that doesn't get you out of the section prescription. thought only have you had surgery, but your whole physiology has changed to support that baby for ten

months. so you have to let your bed heal. >> after giving birth, women may experience pain during sex. i would say that's probably true. >> if you pass an eight or ten pound ball out there, i think you might have some pain. so, yes, you have to let the body heal. but there's lots of things that we coach our mommies to do to get back in the game so to speak. >> does having a baby decrease the barack obama woman's sex drive at all? >> true. it's nature's wave saying you already had one, you need to wait a little while. >> and also a myth that after it you have a baby, your sex life will never be the same. it will never be enjoyable fw p again. >> it just takes time. you have to remember to become a couple again. don't forget about the daddy. you have to be a couple not just a family. and that is so huge.

worse. oil is washing up along miles of prime louisiana beachfront. mark strassmann is in grand isle, louisiana with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. when people wake up here this morning, they'll wonder what washed up overnight. and this is kind of what they'll find. this is -- looks like mud, but it's actually sort of a greasy tar ball-like mud that has washed up overnight. there is mud and all sorts of oil particles throughout the water. some of it's water, if you get on your hands, it feels like crisco. and this area is just part of the 53 miles of coastline and growing that has been touched by this spill with no end in sight. more wildlife is washing up dead covered with oil. that is probably going to continue because the fact is there are millions of gallons of oil out in the gulf that are still making their way toward

shore. where it will all end up, nobody is really clear. but in communities that are at least somewhat in the target zone, there is an increasing sense desperation and semipanic here. they don't think enough has been done and now they wonder whether it's too late to get anything done to stop all this oil from coming ashore. on tuesday, perhaps, bp will try its latest best fix, called a top kill. essentially pushing a heavy mud into the well hoping to clog it up. sort of like deliberately clogging a toilet. but it's never been tried in waters that deep so what you have here is a mess that goes on again today and is going to go on for the foreseeable future. >> and we will continue to follow it. mark strassmann, thank you for being with us from louisiana. a jet blue pilot whowilling ed allegedly threatened to kill himself is under psychiatric observation.pilot was relieved of duty and surrendered his gun

i took him to the vet and he doesn't have a medical problem. what can i do? >> one thing i would like to know, is it a dominant behavior, how is she empowering the dominant behavior. many times people answer to their dogs when the dog barks. when the dog goes to where the leash is and the person puts the leash organization every time the dog controls the relationship, urination is a part of reminding who controls the behavior. >> all right. here's another question for you. >> this is my dog, cora, and she likes to chase anything that moves, be it people on bicycles or roller-blades, squirrels. basically anything. so i was wondering what couldow do to help her. >> in my book i address that problem. you don't want to stop the chasing behavior because it's natural.
