nearly five weeks after the accident, the obama administration says it's not confident bp knows what it's doing. tara mergener is in washington with details. >> reporter: well, with every passing day, pressure is mounting on the white house to help end this ordeal. but the administration admits only the company and the oil industry have the know how. members of the obama administration may not like what they see when they fly over the gulf of mexico this morning. for 34 days now, a blown out well has been spewing millions of gallons of oil into the oil. and more and more of it appears to be washing up among louisiana's beaches. >> i'm angry and frustrated that bp has been unable to stop this well from leaking and to stop the pollution from spreading. >> reporter: ken salazar blasted blasted bcht p officials sunday and threatened to push the oil giant out of the way if it can't clean up the mess soon.

a mile long tube has captured more than a half million gallons of crude in the past week, but it began sucking up oil at a slower right over the weekend. we'll have a series of attempts to kill the well for good. >> reporter: bp's next try has been postponed until wednesday. it involves pumping heavy mud into the twoel clog it. but louisiana isn't waiting for bp or the federal government to help. the state's governor told reporters sunday he's taking matters in to his own hands. >> it is clear the resources needed to protect our coast are still not here. >> reporter: governor bobby jindal says the state has begun building sand barriers to protect the coastline and its fragile wildlife. as for local residents, they don't care who or how. they just want the water clean. but many experts believe that nt would even be possible until crews dig a relief well at the bottom of the gulf and that could take months. and the white house says the justice department has been gathering information about the oil spill, but won't say if a

administrator william k. riley will serve as co-chairs. turning now to the latest from north korea's alleged torpedo attack, morning south korea's president says the north would pay for the attack which killed 46 south korean sailors in march. he also vowed to cut off all trade with north korea and take the issue to the u.n. security council. overnight, the white house said u.s. support for south korea's defense is unequivocal. secretary of state hillary clinton is in china this morning, north korea's many ally. she calls the situation highly precarious. clinton is pressing the chinese to reign in north korea and support a u.n. resolution condemning the agent. she's in china for high level economic talks. she's scheduled to visit south korea on wednesday. jamaican security forces are battling armed supporters of a reputed drug lord. a state of emergency has been declared in the capital of

kingston. there is heavy gunfire and a police station has been set on fire before christopher coke is charged in the u.s. with arms and drug trafficking. the u.s. has issued a travel alert. the iranian interior minister says it may be possible to exchange three american hikers held on he's pea imagine charges. >> we felt in having to leave tehran without our children is almost more than we can bear. our greatest hope was to bring our children home with us. sdwlt sgr the hirks were captured ten months ago. iran says they were spying. on the cbs "moneywatch," stocks ccountants. sadly the rendezvous was soon sniffed out.

welcome back. let's turn now to human error that may have caused the crash of the air india plane that killed 158 people. india's civil aviation minister says the weather and other factors look normal for the flight, but only a full investigation can determine why exactly that happened. the plane overshot the run way and plunged over a cliff saturday near the southern india city of mangalore. of the 166 passengers and crew on board, only eight people

survived. and now turning to the fugitive american born claire ren anwar al a lackey, he's warning of new attacks on americans at home and abroad. the threat was in a new video and the white house has reacted. lara logan reports. >> reporter: the radical muslim preacher chose not to use english, his native tongue, for this propaganda message. instead, the american-born cleric dressed up in tribal gear and spoke in arabic to call for the killing of american civilians and soldiers. in a video produced by the media wing of al qaeda, awlaki praised his student, major nidal hasan, accused of killing 13 at ft. hood last november, and described the shooting as a highway roy rick and wonderful act. white house press secretary robert gibbs responded on cbs' "face the nation" calling awlaki a murderous thug.

>> we're trying to find him and many others throughout the world that seek to do our country and to do our interests great harm. >> reporter: the obama administration admitted in april that awlaki is on the cia's list of targets for assassination despite his american citizenship. >> because he's so visible. it would be very important to get him because it would send a message to radical islamists and jihadists around the world. >> reporter: this is awlaki driving on the streets of america and preaching in an american mosque. before he went to n. to hiding in yemen after the ft. hood shooting. in spite of the religious freedom he enjoyed here, awlaki is now at war with america. he made it clear in this latest video that it's a religious war calling president obama the leader of the war on islam and leader of the crusader campaign. in a commencement speech at west point just hours before the individual why was released, the president embraced american
