accident has cleared. however, we are slow around 32. we still have lingering construction in the area. taking it inside the beltway, bw parkway, more construction activity cleared this way. and maryland, lanes are wide open between route 1 college park to 270. virginia 66 also looks great out of manassas continuing through centreville. finally 95 income in virginia drivers here they are at speed between dumfries and the mixing bowl. andrea, back to you. you can blame our rain over the weekend for the situation this morning on the chain bridge. vdot crews were not able to finish the scheduled work over the weekend. kristin fisher has more on this commuter alert. >> the bridge was supposed to open for the first time in almost a year this weekend.

crews removed the concrete barriers that have been in place since 2009 and resealed the deck. the only thing left is to paint new lane markers but then it started to rain. a record amount on sunday. we know wet paint and rain don't mix. vdot was unable to restripe because of the bad weather but hope to have the new lane markers complete by sometime midweek. >> that was kristin fisher reporting. in the meantime, what they have done is placed temporary barrels on the bridge. drivers will be limited to one lane in each direction. the dc city council may try to charge commuters who drive in to the city for work. a commuter tax will raise upwards of $500 million a year and it would take an amendment to the home rule charter. right now a half million people who work in the district live outside of the city. congress would have the final say on the plan which suburban lawmakers have consistency blocked in the past. rescuers took a motorist

and bus operator to the hospital on sunday. a bus collided with a car. emergency crews had to cut the doors off the car in order to get the driver out. an investigation in to what caused the crash is underway. anne arundel county police are conducting interview and awaiting autopsy results in the death of a 6 week old boy. officers were called to an apartment on edgerock way on saturday morning. they found the body of the boy and an adult woman in the resident. they haven't said whether the woman is related to the baby or whether she faces charges. they say the home was in disarray. what should have been a joyous occasion in charlottesville was a sad one yesterday. university of virginia graduate an their families gave a standing ovation to senior yeardley love. a cousin accepted her diploma on behalf of the lacrosse player killed three weeks ago. the school honored three other students who died during the

day ahead on wall street. good morning. >> good morning. got a lot of work to do, you know? at least last week ended on a high note and investors are hoping for more of the same today. asian markets were higher today. the dow stands at 10193 after adding 125 points on friday. the nasdaq rose 25 and the s&p 500 was up 16 despite those gains for the week the key averages were down 4 to 5%. traders on wall street say new numbers on the housing market will likely determine what the markets will do this week. three report on hole sales and home prices come out over the next three days. analysts are expecting improving numbers across the board as they try to take advantage of an expiring tax credit. they believe it will take several months before we know if the housing market son the road to he coverry. sometimes next year you may be able to buy shares of the newly restructured chrysler.

they are considering a stock offering in 2011. chrysler would have been sold in pieces in 2008 or early 2009 if the u.s. government had not stepped in with billions of dollars. a company losing money but not as much as in the past. money saving tip of the day. this is a free perk for military families for summer and i will explain that coming up. today more officials in the obama administration will get a first-hand look at the disaster in the gulf. they'll fly over louisiana's shoreline. about 65 miles of the state's coast now has oil washing on to the beaches. bp says a mile-long tube is not sucking up as much oil as when first installed and they have postponed plans to block the pipe on the ocean floor until wednesday. >> we will have a series of activities of attempts to kill the well for good. >> it is clear the resources needed to protect our coast are still not here. >> the louisiana governor and

hitting the road about now. dulles toll road drivers will find a quiet commute it's angie with the traffic in realtime coming up. in she news now, the u.s. issued a travel alert after the government of jamaica issued a state of emergency. gun fire erupted between state forces. the supporters torched a police station and fired on officers. they are escorting civilians out of affected area. an american-born muslim cleric calls for the killing of american soldier and civilians in a video from al-qaeda. in the video he praised hassan and called president obama the leader of the war on islam. a colorado family got out just in time before a 60-foot

spine tree crashed on to their garage. the 6-year-old son noticed a crack in the tree. the fire department responded and warned everyone to evacuate just in time. it turns out weight watchers does more than just help participants drop pounds. that story is coming up. storm chasers are in the right place at the right time for the tornado outbreak. we may not have the rains like over the weekend but i will let you know you still need an umbrella today and we are talking about warmer weather heading our way, as well. it is coming up when 9 news now returns.

several tornadoes ripped aparts parts of south dakota last night. storm chasers captured the video. >> it is a wedge. >> a wedge tornado. they are so big they look like a wedge on them ground. >> the twister took out power lines heavily damaged homes and buildings and fortunately no serious injuries were reported. wow, a wedge. you usually think of small but a wedge. >> when you say a wedge, the vortex encompasses is more like this opposed to that if that makes sense. >> oh, wow. >> let's talk about our

weather. we had the rain and the moisture over the weekend. got activated with daytime heating and it came down. some areas had three inches of rain on saturday. talk about what we are seeing this morning. fairly light. in fact it seems to december appear a little bit. motion to the west southwest. there's low pressure to the south. i want to switch to live doppler 9000 hd. this have just seeing it a little better. not that there's a lot. the stuff in charles county is tough to pick up now. echos to the west, north and east. faulkier first. this has been slowly drifting to the west southwest moving in that direction. it is going to head to hume, crossing route 17 now. if it holds together, amissville and huntley could see this in the next half hour or so. a couple of sprinkles west of chantilly and north of haymarket which which is going in that direction. light sprinkles to the north and east we will head up 29 an

95. a look at bethesda, wheaten, colesville. howard county between clarksville. near 29. 3-z 2 here. that is south of 32. north and west of there and up to columbia light sprinkles. in southern maryland we have been watching sprinkles dotting the landscape from waldorf to east of la plata there drifting to the west southwest. that's it this morning but a reminder you will need an umbrella just in case. the forecast has the threat of a passing shower. humid in the 70s. better tomorrow. can't rule out we will see one popup shower but less than 20% with 81 and then a warmer day on wednesday -- with highs in the upper 80s. showers around are isolated. it will be mild and muggy. this afternoon a few showers, mostly cloudy. mid-70s. highs around 79 or so on average.

glucose and insulin levels. weight watcher meetings include education on a he calorie diet, exercise and weekly group support sessions. researchers say it reinforces the importance of group support in lifestyle change. a checklist could help to save lives during surgery. a survey of eight hospitals around the world both before and after they implemented procedures. a new approach to an old test may help doctors detect ovarian cancer. researchers say combining a blood test that measures levels of a certain protein along with measuring the risk of a disease helps to spot early stage cancers in women. ovarian cancer is known as the silent killer because it is often diagnosed too late to be

it is muggy. mid 80s with a chance of a shower during the day. keep the umbrellas handy. >> overall not so bad. as we look at southbound on the bw parkway. this is at 410. we now know the drivers are losing the right lane because of this accident inside the beltway. and overall we are looking at minor slow goes approaching the scene. keep you moving and take you outside in virginia. heading northbound we are dropping in speed between the prince william parkway and 123. no incidents. continuing on to i-395 northbound. you are all clear moving at speed here from the beltway to the 14th street bridge. same situation we will find for drivers in maryland on the outer loop between 95 and interstate 270. that exit there. andrea, over to you. we have another commuter alert for many drivers this morning. if you are looking forward to a faster trip across the newly renovated chain bridge you will have to wait a little longer.

thanks to the heavy rain, kristin fisher is live with more and she explains. good morning. >> that's right, good morning, andrea. this is supposed to be the first morning in almost a year that drivers were able to use all three lanes on the chain bridge as they drive in to work. but you see this sign right back there? that sign. it was supposed to be gone this morning but thanks to the weekend bad weather it will be a few more days before traffic on the bridge is back to normal. chain bridge has been closed to drivers and pedestrians since 9:00 p.m. on friday. over the weekend, d dot crews removed the barriers in place since june of 2009 and resealed the deck. the only thing left was to paint lane markers on the bridge but then it started to rain. in fact, a record amount of rainfall on sunday. we all know wet paint and rain don't mix. so ddot said they were unable to restripe because of the bad weather. in the meantime they have placed temporary barrels on the

bridge so drivers will be limited no one lane in each direction. that's pretty much the same traffic configuration you have been getting used to over the past year as crews worked to renovate the bridge. when will it be done? at this point in time it seems like it is up to the weather gods. ddot will have to wait and see when the roads will dry and when the rain will stop because then they will be able to get out there and repaint lane markers. that's all that is left but again this morning we will only sea two lanes open, not the full three lanes and that's two lanes in each direction. back to you. >> thank you. the grace period for getting caught on a speed camera in bowie, maryland is now over. the cameras were installed near north view elementary school. and until now drivers were issued warnings but drivers caught speeding now will get a $40 ticket. drivers can expect more speed cameras in school zones soon. police are searching for

answers in a deadly crash which claimed the life of an 18-year- old high school senior and 31- year-old father. 18 order man was riding his bike when he was struck and killed by an suv driven by thorn. thorn crossed six lanes of traffic before striking him and a tree. the families of both men spoke about their loss. >> a big loss. a big hit. god, it always comes from him. he gives and takes. >> we don't know anything other than what the police told us. >> reporter: chadli was buried on sunday. we hope to have more details after an autopsy is done on thorn's body. the trial of a girl gets underway. thomas leggs junior is accused of killing sara fox well.

leggs a convicted sex offender used to date sara's aunt. prosecutors in the robert wone death trial expect to spend all week presenting the rest of their case. the three men who live in the swan street townhome home where wone died are charged with obstruction of evidence and evidence tampering. they plan to dispute the time line. they say an intruder killed wone. today a trial is scheduled to start in a dispute over the proposed anne arundel mills mall casino they claim the elections board overlooked fraud in the petition drive to put it before voters in a referendum. the casino will put the laurel park racetrack out of business they say. coming up on 5:35. time for another "living $mart" report. jessica doyle is back with a consumer alert for parents. >> that's right. we talked in the past about how

many drop side cribs have proven to be dangerous and the latest is a -- a new york senator plans to introduce legislation to ban the cribs they would have to be removed from day care centers and hotels. 7million have been recalled in the past five years. when the hardware mall funks the drop side rail can be partly detached and create a gap where a baby can get caught and suffocate. three servers have been charged in a skimming at the cheesecake packry. it is located on wisconsin avenue in northwest dc. the skimming took place between 2008 and 2009. it is time for the money- saving tip of the day. you are a member of the military family here's a thank you. 600 museums are giving free admission to military families this summer.

push china to push punishing north korea for a deadly attack on a south korean navy ship. the crew of "atlantis" has been up for five hours now. they awoke to the theme music for wallace and gromit. in 30 minutes they will inspect the thermal protection system. welcome back to 9 news now. the house labor committee is holding a special hearing in beckly, west virginia. it is on the upper big branch mine explosion. those scheduled to testify are joe mansion and relatives of the four of the 29 miners killed last month. it was the nation's worst coal mining disaster in 40 years. state and local leaders say they have had enough of the british petroleum's slow response in the gulf of mexico and have announced plans to take matters in to their own hands. they have commandeered response vessels hired by bp which were sitting idle. oil is covering 65 miles of the louisiana coastline. on happy news we want to talk about just mentioned one of the former colleagues mike, who won best documentary at the cannes independent film festival. breaking news, breaking down. >> very proud of mike and his

click on angie's army and send in your pictures, videos and events today. the first lion cub born at the national zoo in 20 years died unexpectedly. keepers suspect what killed the cub is the very thing they thought was helping to keep it safe an warm. but bruce leshan reports they are optimistic about future success. >> reporter: the mother seemed to take comfort in the presence of her sister but she batted her away when she sniffed at the area where hours earlier her first cub nestled. an autopsy it died from pneumonia, brought on from inhaling the straw in its nest. >> oh, pneumonia killed a lion cub. >> reporter: they raised scores of cubs on straw from cheetahs to the indian bear cubs they just named earlier this month. they say straw is the most common nesting material used in zoos around the world and naba

tried to keep her cub safe and hidden from prying eyes underneath it. but the straw made its way in the cub's lungs and irritated the internal membranes enough to bring on a fast-moving infection. naba, sheerer and luke all came to the zoo from captivity in south africa four years ago in hopes of adding genetic diversity though gene pool of lions in american zoos. luke is looking awfully lazy right now, but keepers say he's spent the last six days mating with sheerer. and they are optimistic another litter of cubs will result. they say as soon as naba's milk dries up, she should go back in to estres and that could bring a whole den full of cubs. at the national zoo, bruce leshan, 9 news now. >> they say even though it was her first cub she was an excellent mother.
