from the first local station with news in high definition, this is 9 news now. thank you for joining us. i'm peggy fox in for jc hayward. with oil gushing for more than a month now, you can see a live feed right now. that's a live camera underwater a mile. live pictures of the leak. many in the gulf coast do not understand why one of the biggest oil company necessary

world can't figure out a way to stop that leak. as joel brown reports, bp's attempt to stop the gusher is wednesday. >> 65 miles of the louisiana coast is covered with oil. bp is going to try to use top kill to jam the spew. they will jam mud and cement in the well but it has never been used in waters this deep. >> if it works we should get the job complete that day, on wednesday. if it doesn't work i should tell you we have other options. >> reporter: with patience running low, cabinet members in a senate delegation are touring the region for a progress update. >> i'm angry and i'm frustrated that bp has been unable to stop this well from leaking and to stop the pollution from spreading. >> reporter: the ruptured well as already spewed at least 6 million-gallons and the crude is seeping in to the fragile marshes and it is taking a heavy toll on wildlife. >> you can see the oil on the falcon eggs and the birds not

able to fly or swim. >> reporter: two areas where pelicans nest are covered in crude and there are more oil- covered birds with every passing day. >> as you can see, our worst nightmare has come true. >> reporter: state workers are building sand barriers off the coast to hold back the oil. pressing the federal government for more help. joel brown, cbs news, venice, louisiana. >> right now two northern virginia schools remain on lockdown after school police confront a suspicious man. police say the officers at north stafford high school stopped a man in the campus parking lot. the man assaulted the officer and ran for the woods. parkridge elementary is under lockdown. police caught the man a short while later. for a week now police have been on the hunt for two killers who murdered a handyman. they stepped up a search. jose row sal less was killed when he confronted the pair

during their botched home invasion robbery last monday according to police. police stopped every vehicle to ask drivers if they know anything that could help to catch the pair. >> an older model white toyota pickup truck seen in this area. so we are looking for people who routinely pass through here. either walking dogs, exercising or driving through on the way to work or school and we are talking to everyone. >> here are sketches of the two suspects. if they look familiar, call police right away. they may be driving as officer caldwell said a white pickup. that pickup has dark windows. testimony resumes today in the case surrounding the murder of robert wone. he was found stabbed to death inside of a dc row house nearly four years ago. the three men on trial are charged with conspiracy, not murder. prosecutors will focus on what detectives and crime scene technicians found and saw at the murder scene. a low house in dupont circle. if convicted the three defendants face up to 38 years

in prison. today the trial of a man charged with murdering an 11- year-old maryland girl gets underway. 30-year-old thomas leggs junior is accused of kidnapping and killing sara foxwell. he is a convicted sex offender and used to date sara's aunt. we are waiting to hear from a coroner to determine how a six week old baby found in an apartment died. police were called to the apartment on edge rock way on saturday morning. police say the six week old was dead when they got there. police have also questioned a woman inside the home, but so far she's not been charged. if you are looking for a faster trip across the chain bridge you have to wait a little longer thanks to the heavy rain. 9 news now reporter kristin fisher has more on how the ongoing construction may affect your commute. >> this is supposed to be the

first day in almost a year that drivers are able to use all three lane and the chain bridge. the signs behind me were supposed to be taken down but thanks though bad were it will be a few more days before traffic is back to normal on the chain bridge. >> i had a feeling they weren't going to open it. they are already a year behind. this have not unexpected any way. >> it gets to the point where you are like whatever. >> reporter: over the weekend, ddot crews removed the barriers that have been in place since june of 2009 and also resealed the deck. the only thing left was to paint new lane markers own the bridge but then it started to rain. a record amount of rainfall on sunday and we all know wet paint and rain don't mix too well. they were unable to restripe the lanes because of bad weather. in the meantime what they have done is placed temporary barrels on the bridge so drivers will be limited no one lane in each direction until

they get new lane markers painted and that will take place sometime midweek. >> i have been taking chain bridge a number of years. there's no question my morning commute will probably be ten minutes less once they get both of the lanes back open. >> reporter: in washington, kristin fisher, 9 news now. >> so when will the chain bridge be back to normal? ddot officials say it depends on the weather of course. they hope to have them open by midweek. we'll let you know. three servers at a popular dc restaurant are charged with stealing customers ' credit card information and racking up fraudulent charges. federal investigators say the three were food servers at the cheesecake factory. they said the suspects made purchases of $117,000 between 2008 and 2009. two of the suspects are now helping investigators with their case. britain's exprincess sarah ferguson is accused of trying

to cash in on her husband prince andrew. as charlie d'agata reports an undercover tabloid reporter has the whole thing on tape. >> reporter: dutchess of york sarah ferguson says she is sorry after a british tabloid went public with footage that land the former princess in hot water. with a cigarette in hand and a bottle of wine on the table, the dutchess appears to cut a deal with someone posing as a rich businessman. >> 500,000-pounds for me opens doors. >> reporter: that is $700,000 and by opening doors that guarantees access to her husband prince andrew and that stack of cash on the table is $40,000, believed to be a down payment. insiders say the entire royal family is feeling the pain of the sting. >> it will be hugely embarrassing not just for the dutchess but the queen and there are crisis talks going on at the moment. >> reporter: the palace is trying to steer clear of the story other than saying prince

andrew categorically denies any knowledge of any meeting between his ex-wife and tabloid journalists. prince andrews friends accuse the dutchess of making promises she couldn't keep. >> she is saying give me a lot of money and i'll do this for you. i find it delusional actually as well as disgraceful. >> reporter: the dutchess of york says she deeply regretted her actions and the embarrassment she caused and said her financial situation was understress. >> i feel sorry for her really. a bit outrageous but desperate times, i guess. >> reporter: sympathy or not this may be some time before the dutchess of york comes back home to britain. charlie d'agata, cbs news, london. >> reporter: while ferguson's actions may be unsavory she has not broken any laws. before you put down little ones for their afternoon nap we are details on legislation designed to outlaw certain baby cribs. you know, biking is big in

this week a new york senator will introduce legislation to ban drop side cribs. democrat kirsten jill brand wants them gone. 7million have been recalled this the last five years because of safety concerns. she wants them removed from places where she say they pose a danger to children.

>> no day care center, no child care provider, no hospital will be able to have drop side cribs because we cannot tolerate one more infant death. >> reporter: at least 32 deaths have been blamed on drop side cribs in the past decade. most are blamed on a hardware fall function. howard is up next with the forecast. stay tuned. putting the umbrella away from now because radar is fairly quiet. may need it later on today. but as we head to the week this will turn in to a pair sill. this year why not start with a whole wheat bun, grass fed ground beef. buy sodium nitrate free hot dogs. that's a good place to start. >> most have nitrates in them. how do you find ones that don't. >> whole foods, trader joes has them and local stores carry them but you have to ask tore read the label. >> what are we concerned about with nitrates. >> they are in the foods to keep the meats pink. they are high in sodium and linked to elevated risk of pancreatic cancer and childhood leukemia. if you don't need it, there is no reason to have it in there. what about chips, there are other snack food foods. >> looked for baked chips and desserts why not make them using whole wheat pastry flour or buy a mix you just add yogurt to. >> put all the ideas in the

drivers to be courteous, that's another work in progress. >> i often see cars parked in bike lanes. i see loading trucks in bike lanes and sometimes it's the cluelessness that causes problems. talking on the phone putting on makeup. >> i have had run ins with car doors. >> drivers are sometimes prize surprised by what the safest thing for cyclists is to do. riding in the middle of the roe road is sometimes the safest thing for bikers to do. >> biking is a shared road. it is not just theirs. >> don't veer in the bike lane when they exist. >> reporter: as alderman notes we need to respect laws as well. >> i get frustrated with drivers, pedestrians, cyclists. none of those groups are perfect. >> there's a lot of education that needs to help, of bikers and drivers. >> not all studies agree bike lanes are the safest way to go. some research finds they create a false sense of security for

cyclists and drivers and can lead to more collisions. space shuttle "atlantis" performed a few jobs in preparation for the trip home. "atlantis" undocked from the international space station for the last time yesterday. they left behind a 20-foot compartment loaded with supply and fresh batteries. it is the third to last shuttle mission. i got to seego off in person last month. it was very good. >> there is a slight chance it may go again. they will prep it to be a rescue mission for because it has a greater payload than what the soviet rockets can take up to the space shuttle. >> those batteries are big. >> big. >> we have had a lot of clouds. a qume of sprinkles and drizzle this morning and muggy day. the muggies are back. the muggies will give way to the heat, especially by wednesday.

cloudy today. some sunny breaks. even a few showers in me mid 80s. nicer tomorrow. can't rule out a shower west of town, 81. and then wednesday a sunny almost hot day with highs in the upper 80s. the forecast for this afternoon, mostly cloudy, a few showers will pop up later on. right now fairly quiet with highs in the mid-70s. tonight an isolated shower before midnight. could be a patch of fog after midnight. mostly cloudy, lows 60 to 65 and then for tuesday it will be a better day in the sense we will have more sunshine, warmer and a stray shower is possible. better chances will be west of washington out to i-81 and the shenandoah valley. you can see this flow coming from the east to the west. a few showers approaching southern new jersey but with this onshore flow, some sunnier breaks here we could bubble up showers. don't be surprised if we see sun and showers to follow later this afternoon. temperatures respond also where the sun is peeking out east. salisbury in the low 70s.

locally anywhere from 75 hagerstown, to 66 culpeper an gaithersburg. we are at 70 at reagan national. 68 rockville. bethesda. 69 laytonsville and springfield. down south at fort bell voifer. 80 bowie as is college park. brandywine in the upper 60s as well is columbia. crofton 69. national right now still cloudy. a lot of clouds all day. 70. we were 67 this morning so we barely moved. dew point 1 and a northeast wind at seven miles an hour. big dip in the jet stream. you can follow the clouds as they come down here 678 big storm with that big dip. we are worried about tornadoes in to colorado. off shore now one storm. i will step out of the way trying to develop here. not tropical yet and back here all of the shower and storms off the carolina coast, the moisture, the heavy moisture that we had over the weekend that is south of us. you see how the clouds are socked in from pennsylvania

through the carolinas. so don't expect to see like bright blue skies but a little sun is possible hoar later on. high pressure happen near albany. on-shore flow here. winds becoming southerly. that is really warming things up. i will see the warm air in the middle of the country head this way. so it will feel more like summer in the next couple of days. the seven-day forecast, temperatures in the mid-70s, below average. 79 is where we should be. a shower or two. same story on tuesday. by wednesday and thursday, upper 80s, near 90. in fact thursday could be a little humid and cooler this weekend. low 70s with a couple of showers possible. we are going to the kitchen when 9 news now at noon returns. ñú

some chili flakes, parsley oregano, pepper, garlic. the recipe son the website, too. i'm going fast. >> you go. >> all in there. blend it up. don't are she blender right now but put it in the food process or or let it sit like that. mush it, let the flavors come out and onions over the beef. it is a good dish for summer because it's quick and simple. i have tenderloin in here but you can use any cut of meat if you would like. and little pepper, some qumeen, little thyme, oregano. >> how long do you want the meat to sit out before you cut it up a and start grilling. >> let it sit out. i like to, before i cook it let it sit at room temperature, maybe 30 minutes. i forget what the fda says about temperatures and all of that jazz. they don't know what they are talking about. >> you have to have it at the right temperature or it doesn't mix mix right. >> marinate it overnight.

tenderloin not so much but a tougher cut of meat marinate it overnight. >> that is cilantro and you can marinate in chimi churry but we didn't. we will start on the peaches. great fruit, a lot of natural sugar. >> don't want them too ripe or just ripe. >> just ripe as a matter of fact. it depends on you but you don't want them to fall apart as they hit the grill pan. it is a beautiful kitchen and you can do it outside but i felt like coming in. little cinnamon sugar to get it started. you don't have to do that because they have natural sugars but we like cinnamon and sugar. we are american. >> sounds great. >> 30 seconds. >> that's a wonderful flavor, as well. >> i'm dropping stuff. we take a little cheese. oh my goodness. >> we have the recipe on
