>> one school, 1200 victims. a massive identity theft outrages local families. also, did dp break the law by starting new drilling after the golf disaster. criminals are tracking cops right from their cell phones. but the good guys can do it too. we'll show you how. this is 9news now. shock and outrage at a local school tonight as parents learn how a thumb drive containing their children's personal information was stolen. >> it was taken from a bag in an administrator's car in her unlocked garage. parents are especially upset they weren't even notified until four days after the crime occurred. >> it was scattered. >> reporter: some parents at lake ridge middle school in woodbridge are furious. >> there are plenty of ways to access information. not a thumb drive in a car in a residence. >> when i first heard about it i was scared. i was mad. i'm now thinking is somebody going to steal my child. >> we don't know if a pedophile

has this information and where i live. >> reporter: on the stolen thumb drive, personal information on more than 1200 students. their names, phone numbers and sensitive information, including whether they have a medical condition. >> what was not on the thumb drive was social security numbers or any pictures of students. also there were no addresses on that thumb drive either. >> reporter: that was little consolation fory parents stunned that the thumb drive was not encrypted. >> this in itself is a very wide open risk that should have been approached, even addressed prior to even this coming up. >> you have 7th graders that can hack into your system. they by pass the facebook in the library. >> reporter: the theft occurred last monday evening. students brought home a letter to notify their parents on friday. >> i'm still afraid for my child. the fact that it didn't come out until friday and my daughter was at the bus stop from monday through friday by herself. >> reporter: the school sicz sem is

ystem is now reviewing its security procedures. >> also on that stolen thumb drive, whether a student walked home or took the bus. prince williams county police are investigating the theft which was part of a rash of burglaries. the woodbridge parents are not the only ones upset no night. in prince george's county a school bus driver has been arrested on child pornography charges after he videotaped himself molesting a 7-year-old on the bus. >> reporter: they arrested the bus driver at the brandywine dust depot. he is accused of molesting a child and recording the incident. they found the card from a cell phone camera on the counter. >> we took it home and found the child pornography. >> reporter: police got surveillance video in ansa tempt

to find -- an attempt to find who left the card. >> launched an investigation to find out who left the card. >> reporter: the phone card and the surveillance video led them to small wood who he described as a bus driver. >> and he took the child to church and then had sleepovers with the child which would suggest there was a relationship outside the relationship at a bus driver. >> reporter: an occupant of the home where smallwood lives rejected talking on his behalf. he was a frequent participant in bible studies and church services. >> i've known him for a long time. he was a very nice person. i never thought this would come up. >> i thought scott was a pretty good guy. i really did. that was my impression. over the years that i've been around him, i really thought he was a nice guy. >> reporter: one reason the feds released smallwood's picture is because they fear there are other victims and hope the pictures may prompt them to

come forward or the parents to ask questions. if procedures were followed when he was hired in 2005, he did undergo a background check and was fingerprinted. it is important to say that he has only been charged and found guilty of nothing. in two days, bp will attempt to plug the massive oil leak in the gulf of mexico. engineers will use a top kill method where they shoot mud and cement into the well but bp isn't sure if it's going to work because it's never been tried at this depth. meanwhile oil stretches among 150 miles of shoreline between louisiana and alabama. at least 6 million gallons have gotten into the gulf but some scientists think there are more than 11 million gallons in the water. the spill has cost bp $760 million. despite those rising costs, british petroleum and other companies continue to secure permits for more drilling. critics say this flies is the face of the moratorium president obama announced ten days ago. as brittany morehouse reports,

even after he said no more, drilling projects move forward. >> it is pretty clear that the system failed and it failed badly. >> reporter: it was may 14th when the president announced a moratorium on both granting permits to drill new wells and granting environmental waivers. his anger was clear. >> i did not appreciate what i considered to be a ridiculous spectacle. >> reporter: but now that anger can be heard in the voices of environmentalists who wondered why the department granted seven permits for drilling projects and five waives for review. >> when the president announced the moratorium i think they thought we would stop. our lawsuit says that after the blowout occurred we should have had a moratorium and we should not have continued to issue permits and environmental short cuts. >> reporter: he blames interior secretary ken salator who last week taefd. >> if we have one more spill, it

own words recounting the night that robert wone was stabbed to death in his home. joe price's interrogation tape was played in court today. price is one of the three roommates charged in the murder. on the interrogation tapes price says he knows his koext defendants better than -- co-defendants better than his mother. he didn't hurt him. police look for a search for two killers. they stopped drivers in the same area where they think the drivers got away one week ago. the killers attacked 39-year-old josi rosales who worked as a handyman for a local family. >> kind of scary because they could still be around and, i don't know, creepy. >> reporter: you hadn't heard anything about the murders? >> you haven't. >> reporter: you live up the street? >> yes. it shocks me. >> reporter: they want to hear from anyone that can help them

solve the case. $117,000. that is how much three waiters in dc are accused of stealing from customers. federal authorities say fraudulent charges on customer's credit cards were made in 2008 and 2009. the u.s. secret service began investigating after city bank reported many bogus charges on cards used at the cheese cake factory in friendship heights. they used electronic skimmers to capture the numbers and then they would hand off the devices to people higher up in the scheme. tonight, police are looking for a gunman after an apparent road rage shooting on the baltimore washington park way. a man driving a red sedan was rear ended last night on route 198. the driver of that suv shot and wounded the sedan driver after he tried to run away fleeing on to the bw parkway southbound exit. the victim was shot in the arm but is expected to recover. park police are also looking for witnesses in the shooting. i'm meteorologist topper

in california. the fight started off an oakland police officer and a medical facility officer squared off in the ring. now, the boxing match between the officers was all for charity but what sparked this shoving match is unknown. the organizers says emotions were running high and everybody wanted their fighter to win. >> law enforcement is held to a higher standard. they expect everybody else to follow the rules, and i think that is where all the shock was. >> the oakland police department does say it expects its officers to act in a professional manner no matter what, and they're now investigating. sunscreen that back fires. the environmental working group says almost half of the 500 most popular sunday screens have ingredients that could accelerate skin cancer. in particular derivatives of vitamin a like retinal. now, this is known to have anti-aging properties, so many
