was happy for the help. as lesli said just a moment ago. the neighbors are devastated to say what happened in baltimore is completely out of character. >> he was a wonderful son. as far as i could see, he was always there for her. if she had to go in the ambulance, he rode with her. he never left her side. and i told her, when i seen him walking her out, that she had a great son. you don't find so many sons like that and this is just hard to believe. it's really hard. >> he had called about two months ago and wanted to know if i knew an address that would come because she wasn't able to get out and he wanted somebody to come to the house. >> he was a gentle person. he tried to take care of her. he didn't really try to be a mean person at all, at least from what i saw from him. he was a gentle soul. >> reporter: a gentle soul that

would call neighbors to ask could we get a hairdresser come in and help my mom look pretty. and a neighbor that would say i saw your tree needs cutting and let me get rid of it out in the country because my mom wants a ride to the country. but for what happened in baltimore, andrea mccarran has been taped it all day and joins us live with the details. >> reporter: what a tough story. paul warren partis was apparently distraught over his mother's postoperative care. the wounded doctor, an associate professor and orthopedic surgeon, david b. cohen underwent surgery and is expected to survive. moments after a doctor briefed partis about his mother's condition, he opened fire. >> removed a small semi- automatic handgun from his

waist area, waistband area, and fired a single gunshot that struck the doctor in the lower chest, upper abdomen. >> reporter: as s.w.a.t. teams surrounded the building, the hospital went into lockdown. >> i'm about to leave and i was leaving they said get back. >> my boss came running in to tell me exactly basically to stay put where i'm at, because there is a guy running around with a gun and we don't know what he's going to do. >> reporter: some hospital staffers say partis was angry that his mother's spinal surgery allegedly left her paralyzed. >> a lot of people were scared because they didn't know where the guy would go shooting next. >> reporter: dominique jones' sister was working inside. he learned about it when she posted it on facebook. >> you don't know where the guy would go next. if he was shooting anybody that he sees walking. so it's a scary moment. >> reporter: johns hopkins administrators decided to look into security after the virginia tech shooting.

>> 80 doors, 80,000 visitors a week, it's difficult to secure any enterprise with all of those doorways. >> reporter: there are no magnetometers at this hospital or at most nationwide. after the gunfire, johns hopkins alerted employees via text messages telling them what happened and what they should do. that was followed by a round of e-mails to hospital workers. another security note, all hospital staff members have i.d. badges and all 80,000 visitors are given wristbands. reporting live from baltimore, andrea mccarran, 9 news now. >> andrea, thank you. and stay with 9 news now for the latest on the hospital shooting investigation. now to another story that is also rooted in baltimore. paul brian palmer has been captured. we brought this story to you first last week. palmer apparently got away from baltimore police. they thought he might have gone to montgomery county. he and his pregnant girlfriend were captured this week in

washington state. palmer was charged with attempted murder for a stabbing back in august but now he faces even more charges. you can imagine adding two hours to your commute? well some studies predict that could happen to people who drive i-395 next year when a new defense building opens. and that traffic nightmare at the center of a town meeting tonight. peggy fox is at hammond middle school to tell us. two hours, you feel for people who might have to endure that. >> reporter: exactly. and at rush hour. and for the first time, the department of defense, three top officials will be here tonight to answer questions from the community about the controversial new building going up along i-395. it's controversial because it will hold more than 6,000 employees and it was built nowhere near a metro station. every day i-395 handles 191,000

cars. most jamming lanes to get to and from work. come next year at this time, thousands more are expected to make matters worse for everybody out here. >> what am i to do? >> reporter: most people who work out on seminary road aren't happy about the 6400 employees coming to the new defense building, the marc center. and congressman jim moran wants something done. >> we have impending chaos here. the military never should have located a building on 395 and seminary road without adequate infrastructure. >> reporter: not everybody is upset. the nearby hotel and restaurants are happy to serve more people. >> so are you going to welcome your new neighbors. >> no problem. i'm sure they're going to fill certain empty seats in our restaurant. >> reporter: but the influx of cars is also expected to clog seminary road and surrounding streets. representative moran has a bill to prevent the army from building more than 1,000

parking spaces at the site to force the army to supply shuttle buses. but defense analyst frank monkey isn't sure about it. >> where does the shuttle come from? they come from all over. if they come here to get the shuttle, they are already here. >> reporter: now v-dot has recommended a direct-access ramp from the h.o.v. lanes coming from the south because that is where a majority of employees are coming from. but now the army eliminated that plan because of opposition from the community of building through a botanical garden area. so tonight they will hear what the community has to say, we'll hear what the department of defense has to say and see if they have any other solutions. the meeting starts at 7:30. i'm peggy fox, in alexandria, back to you. d.c. attorney general peter nichols said he will resign. he will stick around to make sure that the transition to gray's administration is smooth and that it benefits the city.

delia, i understand that suv was going pretty fast. do we know how fast? >> reporter: police are still trying to determine that. marlboro pike is a very busy road and cars right now at rush hour are going by pretty fast. that's why i'm wearing this safety vest. but firefighters do tell us that according to the dash cam video, the vehicle was traveling at quote, excessive speed. we're told the driver never hit the brakes. only coming to a stop when he crashed into this bic wall, taking down this white fence. and look at this pole. the vehicle slammed into this pole and then it flipped over. take a look at this video. it is pretty dramatic. the driver of the suv, 30-year- old emanuel jones was half a mile from home. his cousin and ray watley and friend tony burney were also in the car. police say the suv crossed a double yellow line heading straight toward the ambulance, which had its lights and siren on.

>> we respond on an emergency basis to about 130,000 calls per year for our department. we're one of the busiest combination fire and ems departments in the country and we log a lot of road miles on orients and -- and our drivers need to drive defensively and safely. >> reporter: and we're told the district heights station, which is just a couple of blocks away, is the busiest station in the county. the firefighters we're told is a 22 and 27-year-old are recovering at home. they are sore from today's crash. firefighters say they are very proud of them and will offer counseling when they do return to work. we're live in district heights, delia gonsalves, 9 news now. now to some suspected armed robberies caught on tape. but apparently this led to the arrest for an attack near the university of maryland. police hope this video of the suspected robbers trying to use credit cards in college park robberies might lead to even
