when you get fluid in the middle ear, it builds up and the fluid gets infected from a virus or bacteria. and you know, a lot of people think you need anti-biotics to treat an ear infection. in recent years we learned that 80% of ear infections get better no matter what you do, even without anti-biotics. the ear infection will probably go away on its own. as long as your child doesn't get a high fever or is in pain for more than 3-4 days, you are good. in the meantime, you want to do something for the pain. one of my favorite remedies is garlic oil drops. basically the garlic and the oil together, you put a few drops in the here, whenever hurts and that soothes the pain. it works wonders. i tried it in myself and my kids and my patients use it. it works well. the garlic itself is a natural anti-biotic, garlic oil, it works wonders! >> very cool stuff, dr. sears! >> yeah! >> i want to tell you about a

special chilling -- special challenge i just untook. i see patients that come into the er with health problems and they could have been prevented. it's poor eating, lack of exercise, smoking, and drinking. many people think these bad habits, hey, you know what? no big deal. trust me as an er doctor, all of these things add up. so i decided to show everyone firsthand what unhealthy living can do to your body. ♪ >> i can't dictate what my day's going to look like, but i can always dictate what i eat, and whether or not i am active. i don't have a car, so i bike to the hospital or i bike to the studio to do the show. i never use the word "exercise". i say "being active". my ideal of the day is getting on the bike in the mountains. you don't realize you are working out. the number one thing i have when i eat, i think, will this

allow me to have good energy 30 minutes from now. if the answer is no, i will opt for something different. it breaks my heart to see people come into the er, with multiple diseases all of them starting from one thing, being obese. i see a man sitting on my table in the er in a cardiac arrest and i have to go tell the wife that he died, and you can't separate the two if you do what i do, it's preventable. this is my personal mission. starting tomorrow, i am going to spend 5 days making all of the most unhealthy choices i can. >> i will not let you exercise, no riding your bike. we will rent you a car. less than 6 hours of sleep a night. you have to get the snacks from the vending machine and two hours a night, channel surfing. >> project unhealthy is my attempt to highlight how quickly your body can start to suffer. not only your body, but my mind. >> this is how a lot of people live their lives every day!

>> i am not gonna let you exercise. no riding your bike. >> can i get a no. 2 meal? >> i am nervous about this experiment. >> it's frightening what can happen in those 5 days. it's no doubt, america's in crisis. i am sounding the alarm for nationwide wake-up call. it'sicismem, i did this experiment, we called it "project unhealthy" because i wanted to see what everyone felt like. let's face it, i am a healthy person. i don't know what it feels like to be unhealthy. i wanted to see what it was like. i want to walk everyone through what a typical meal might be in my day. it starts with fruits and greek yogurt and granola.

for lunch, vegie burger with avocados and sweet potato chips and for dinner, vegie pizza on whole wheat. and dark chocolate, almonds or oat meal bars. the average calories, 2380. so, for "project unhealthy" i wanted to live like a "normal unhealth american" would live. we know we eat more calories than we need. sugary cereal, bagels with cream cheese, burgers with french fries and steaks and all of these deserts that over time add up and before you know it, you can have days without realizing it, where you are eating over 6,000 calories! and the thing is, we are not today just talking about what happened to my weight. we're talking about a lot of other things that happened and i want you to take a look. >> day one of "project unhealthy". i am staring down at a bowl of what is going to amount to

sugar. you know? >> so there's a cup and-a-half. we are all gonna eat more than that. that's 3 cups. simple sugar, so it doesn't take much for it to get into your stomach, the small intestine and get absorbed and go immediate into the blood stream. mid morning, you crash! it's time for a road trip for fast food and sorry, buddy, but you are gonna be staying at home. >> i would be lying if i said i wasn't looking for to fast food. >> oh, come to papa! >> can i help you? >> can i get a no. 2 meal and is there a way i could get that with the large fries and the large drink? no wonder our country has a problem with being overweight. don't think that there are not flavor scientists sitting in a lab trying to figure out how it make this burger addictive.

rown -- round two. a fried sandwhich. the oil on my hands will be in the arteries. my blood will turn milky from the lipids, the fats circulating. i feel -- i don't know if satisfied is the word as much as stuffed. i will tell you one thing i am not going to do. i am not going to be going for a run out there today ... ♪ >> so, instead of finding fast food, i found a donut shop on the corner. i was gonna get, i don't know, maybe 4 donuts, and he said, "it's better to get a half dozen, it's cheaper". so 32 you -- so there you have. mm-hmm. ♪ >> holy frosted chocolatey goodness. mm-hmm. there's a party going on in my mouth! it's just tasting too good. i need more! anyone want a donut?

blood is filled with fats and my heart's working harder and over time, knowing what that does to your body, to your life span. i don't want to spend my life feeling like this. i would love to quit this experiment now. this is nust -- just not worth it. >> after a few days of this, this project really started to effect me. >> this is the worst. it's 1:45 in the morning right now. i can't sleep. i feel terrible. my belly feels full. there's a bunch of slunge -- sludge in there. >> america, it's just not worth it. ♪ >> i can't -- i can't focus. it's not me. i am not making sense. i don't know what to say. >> the irony is, i am excited to eat like crap again. then i swear it off the minute i am done, it's a

self-reenforcing cycle! is this real? is this real? people really -- is this really a menu, item? this is the type of meal that would really trigger a heart attack. i have two big fried pieces of meat, 4 slices of bacon. >> try it. >> i don't want to. >> people eat this everyday. ♪ >> i'm sorry. you eat it. you can have that. i am done. ♪ >> this is disgusting! >> i saw it the other day. so, i know too much. i know what's in these foods. >> there's gotta be something else. >> i have done it for four

days and i can't imagine going on like this ... >> for a long time we thought that, you know, eating a fatty diet has this long-term effect on the cardiovascular health. the reality is, it happens almost immediately. we can show within hours of eating a fatty male, how his blood flow is impaired. this simple test that we put an ultrasound probe on the artery, first at rest. we will measure the diameter, or the size of how big that artery is. then i will release it. then you will see how the blood vessel dilates. travis, go eat your last meal and we will remeasure it. >> for the sake of science, one last meal, here she goes ... ♪ ♪ >> so, wow, travis, you can see that after a fatty meal, the blood vessel is a millimeter smaller than it was before you ate the fatty meal.

>> that's really scary. ♪ >> so i want to make it clear, i wasn't acting in any of that, and probably the number one thing i noted throughout the experiment is, by the end of it, i was in a fog. my mind wanted to do nothing but lay on the couch and i couldn't think straight, i felt terrible. the irony is, there was a small part of me that says, it's okay, because i have the next fast food meal to satisfy me. what's going on? that belly fat that i was building is so toxic to so many systems in your body, including your brain, that over time i was becoming literally a train wreck and that was in one week! i will show you what was happening right here. so this is me. no big deal at the start of the project. and you are thinking, what is the big deal, you ate a fast food meal. your body wants nutrients. so it's looking for nutrients

in the meal. instead, it's finding way too much sugar! in these fast food meals. this way too much salt. and then what would make me feel so just, no. 1 at first satisfied but terrible later, all of these fat globules. what's happening over time is, these are digested and one thing, within 15 minutes, maybe that sugar is absorbed into the blood stream and i want to talk about what a -- i felt. i felt great. you wanna know why i felt great? because my brain was literally releasing seratonin and dopamine, like in a herin addicts brain. i was happy and living! it was great. let's go back to what sugar also does. that's insulin, attaching itself to the sugar. insulin does a funny thing in

the human body. it tells your body you are about tit had a famon -- you are about to hit a famon. i want you to focus on this area. the insulin is telling your body to store fat right around your mid of section. the more sugar you eat, all of these meals tell your body "store it" because there's a long stretch ahead where we won't eat at all. as you look deeper inside of my body, these are the fat cells. why is this important? not only are you building more fat cells after these meals but the fat cells are getting bigger! basically embeding the internal organs in toxic goop! i want to show everyone your heart. this is what was really working harder in me. my heart after i ate these meals would literally have to work double time pumping harder, the blood pressure would go up, and as you see my heart beating i want to remind

you of the study i did, during the experiment, that scared me quite a bit. you may remember it, this is a picture of my artery. after a meal. and my arteries no longer expanded the way they're supposed to. after one meal! and so, blood flow, decreases after one meal! i don't want that in my life! instead, what i want is for good things to happen. what happens, oh, let's say maybe 30 minutes to an hour after my meal? let's not forget about your brain. because before you remember how i showed you all of those areas lighting up? now what you are looking at, that is the hypothalamus signaling the body to release cortisol, guess what cortisoldoes, it helps you store more fat mere, but it makes you want to eat more. i was on a ferris wheel. i was on a vicious cycle: eat more, feel terrible, eat more. i am tell you the kicker of

all of this. this is what can happen to a body in less than one week, i put on 8 pounds. you may not care about this, but i do. my blood pressure was fabulous, 114/76. in less than one week my diastolic blood pressure entered the pre-hyper tensive zone. i actually was developing high blood pressure during this experiment. that was 5 days. so, imagine for everyone out there who does this each and every meal, what you are doing to your bodies! the important lesson is, since this project was finished i went back to being healthier than ever. i eat healthier and feel better than ever. you can take these numbers and push them back. the choices you make every single day that matter. it's easy to say yes to all of that bad stuff out there, and it scared me to see how easy it was to fall into an unhealthy routine. in the end, i didn't feel

and your girlfriend may say, take the "natazia" it works for me. it may not because every woman is different. it's great to have options, birth control pills have estgen and progesterone in them. natazia is different, it's the first one with a different etgen and it's quadrophasic, it changes four times throughout the cycle. that may or may not good for you. changing can sometimes make the pms thing a little more crazy every month, or it can make you less crazy. it depends on how it works for you. some women are hormone sensitive, and some not. so it's really, you gotta try it, is what your gyn will tell you and what you are trying to get out of it. don't be thrown by the names or what your girlfriend is taking, talk to your gyn. >> thank you. >> other questions we got going on here? i am liking the front row.

how about this lady over here? >> hi, dr. lisa. in operating on women with large fibroids, would you leave the uterus intact or is there a risk of the woman losing the uterus or too much blood? >> it depends on your age. you should have an operative consult with your doctor. they will look at your insurance, money needs and what's the best for your health. it depends on your age and your health and if you want future fertility. if you have a really large fibroid and you are heading towards menopause, then, yes, you wanna have a hysterectomy. reason being, now, hysterectomy, a lot of women get this confused. it's taking out the uterus. a lot of women believe it's taking out the ovaries, which puts them into early menopause, true. why not a myomectomy, taking out just the fibroids? when we take the fibroids out,

then more bleeding can occur because we leave the vessels. what we take the -- when we take the uterus out it's almost a bloodless procedure, because we take all of the blood vessels out. are you having heavy bleeding, too? >> sometimes, yes. if you are having heavy bleeding, sometimes women can bleed so much, they lose half of their blood volume in a short amount of time and it can be life threatening. sometimes hysterectomy is what you need for a quality of life. even though it's scary, because you are scared of surgery or scared of losing your uterus? >> myute -- my uterus is the essence of who i am. >> i hear that all the time. you feel like this is a woman part of you and you don't want to lose it. it's only useful for having a baby and i know what you mean, or what you think, but you have to think about it as losing something that's causing -- that's weight in

and the one thing they will say, if you are having them year-round, and particularly when you are at home with your cat -- >> uh-huh. >> it could be the cat. but we have a friend here on "the doctors", control your allergies, don't let your allergies control you. >> right. >> take simple steps like limit the areas of the house where the cat is allowed; keep the cat out of the bedroom. you are taking medicine for the allals. people may need to go up a step. if you are taking anti-histamine, maybe you need nasal steroids because the membranes in the sinuses may be inflamed and are reacting to whatever you are allergiic to potentially on the cat and nasal steroids will help bring down the inflammation. and the next step is there are allergy shots some will undergo. >> this is dr. sears, i would say, go see an allergiist,
