avenue. andrea back to you. >> with vincent gray all but certain to become the next mayor of d.c., this week we should learn more about the future of one of the key figures in at dry january fenty's administration. gray has a meeting scheduled with schools chancellor michelle rhee. kristen fisher joins us from d.c. public schools headquarters. >> reporter: good morning. ever spins vince gray won the democratic primary last tuesday, the big question following him is what will happen to d.c. school chancellor michelle rhee. initially at a press conference after the primary, gray said he would wait until after the general election before he made any sort of personnel decisions. now we are hearing it could be happening much sooner. here is why. rhee will be returning from vacation this week and when she does, as you said, she already has agreed to a meeting with

vincent gray. the man who defeated her current boss. rhee said this the past she didn't think she could work with rhee. she called the outcome of the democratic primary devastating for d.c.'s children. as for gray, he was heavily critical of rhee and her school reforms and opposed her firing of more than 200 d.c. teachers for under performance. it's almost certain that he and rhee will part ways. still, gray says school reform will move forward in d.c. regardless of what happens with his choice of d.c. school chancellor. here is what he said in his victory speech about it last week. >> make no mistake. school reform will move forward in a gray administration. and it will be done in a holistic way with a strong and

powerful chancellor that works with parents and teachers. the big question now is really when will this meeting happen. nobody knows for sure right now but they will be meeting this week. whether or not any sort of decision will be announced remains to be seen. an drew i can't. >> thank you. some people in virginia are casting ballots for the november general election. in person absentee voting is under way. voters can cast an absentee ballot at their local registrar office. the last day will be saturday, october 30th. a maryland state senator is under indictment. a federal grand jury charged him with bribery, conspiracy, mail fraud and extortion. the indictment stems from allegations that curry used his influence to benefit a grocery

store chain. he stepped down from his post as chairman of the senate budget committee. he is running unopposed to the november election. the mother of the man shot by capital police spoke. she said her son wanted to die friday morning but didn't want to kill himself. that's when he pointed a gun at capital police officers who shot him four times. wheeler survived the shots. his mother said she just learned her son had a run in with d.c. police last month for waving a gun in public. she wishes he got the necessary help he desperately needed. >> they dropped the ball. if they had stopped him at that point, capitol hill would have been a nonissue. he wouldn't have been on the street to do that. >> wheeler is in stable condition at the hospital. he is charged with vault with intent to kill and carrying a pistol without a license.

a new york woman pled guilty to 37 burglaries and admitted to stealing more than half a million dollars worth of gold and other valuables from homes in fairfax and loudoun counties. 34-year-old melinda sotos plea was part of a deal to speak against her husband. she admits to driving her husband and another man from new york to break into homes belonging to south asian americans. she is expected to be sentenced in december. time for our latest living smart report of the morning. jessica doyle has the day off. some overseas markets took off this morning. tokyo's exchange is closed for a holiday. other markets posted gains. hong kong hang sang ended down slightly. the dow rose over 13 points

following a suspected concussion and only allowed to return after clearance by a licensed health care provider but develop awareness and training program for coaching staffs and families. several local hospitals are looking into a screening test for hiv that detects the virus much earlier. right now the precise hiv test is only available at the santa rosa hospital in san antonio texas. it is government approved for pediatric patients. according to cdc, more than a million americans are infected with hiv. one in five don't even know it. that group accounts for 54% of new infections each year. the fda delayed a decision on the breast cancer drug a vast stein. a vast stein works by cutting off a sue more's -- tumor's blood supply. avastin has side effects like internal bleeding.

the 41-year-old's execution is scheduled for thursday. she was convicted of plotting to have her husband and stepson killed in 2002 so she could collect a $250,000 life insurance policy. lewis's supporters argue she should not die because she is borderline mentally retarded and manipulated by a much smarter conspirator. a funeral service will be held for dr. ron walters. it takes place at shiloh baptist church in northwest. after a viewing at 10g of 10:00 a.m., celebration of his life starts at 11:00. he taught at the university of maryland and howard university where he headed the poll science department. he was considered an expert on race relations, civil rights and public policy. ron walters lost his battle with lung cancer earlier this month. he was 72 years old. with vincent gray all but certain to become the next mayor of d.c., we should learn more about the future of one of

the key figures in outgoing mayor adrien fenty's administration, michelle re. kristin fisher joins us with more. >> reporter: michelle rhee will be returning from vacation this week. when she does, she will meet with vince gray about her future or lack there of as d.c. public school chancellor. michelle rhee's controversial reform style was a major issue throughout the primary battle. supporters of adrienne fenty at the credit them with making tough decisions. but opponents accused her of alienating teachers and parents and firing 200 d.c. teachers for under performance. rhee said she doesn't think she can work with gray. one day after his primary win she called the results, quote, devastating for d.c. students. as for gray, he hasn't said what he will do with rhee except that he will sit down

with her at some point this week. we know that first meeting will likely take place wednesday but whether or not any decisions will actually come from that meeting remain to be seen. here is what gray had to say about a time frame during a press conference last wednesday. >> we won't make any personnel decisions at all until after the election. it's important that she and i begin the conversations now as i prom ised that i would. >> already will names are being tossed around as a replacement for this position. who would replace michelle rhee. some of the names include three former d.c. officials. two of them had worked previously in michelle rhee's position. other names on the table include two of rhee's current deputies. so, lots of names are being tossed around. hopefully we will have a better idea as to michelle rhee's exact future later this week. back to you. >> thank you. a few schools in anne arundel county maryland will be closed today because of a

in the news, more than 1,000 people have been evacuated near salt lake city utah because of a fast-moving wildfire. the fire started during artillery training at a nearby national guard camp. two homes have burned so far and residents have been asked not to use their cell phones to keep lines open for emergency cruise. the chapped chilean miners took part in the country's celebration. a special meal was sent down to
