with flames all around her, she got her two oldest children out of a two story window and dropped her baby into the arms of a friend but that fire moved too fast to save her two other children or herself. >> it was just black smoke and you couldn't see anything in the house. >> reporter: huge flames and thick smoke poured from their neighbor's home, a home with five small children, including a 2-month-old baby. mother sacrificed herself by saving three of her children, dropping her infant out a two story window into waiting arms and telling her 6 and 8-year- old to jump. >> the mother threw her out the second story window to the uncle and that's how she got out. >> and the other two kids that got out jumped out of the window and she turned back to get other kids but it was too late. >> reporter: the baby raced to the burn center. before firefighters arrived, neighbors tried to help get the

others out. they say the uncle was trying to get the mother to drop the other kids out of the window. >> when i came out, manny was running back and forthwith the baby because manny was trying to go back in, so i grabbed the baby. he looked like he had blood on him but manny tried to go back in but when we heard her and him screaming back and forth we heard a boom. >> reporter: another the mother or her 3 or 5-year-old were seen again. >> i think it was another five to ten minutes before the fire trucks got here. it was horrible and devastating. >> reporter: and the neighbors trying to help felt helpless. >> and i knew the kids were still in there. >> she said they are still in the house. and we couldn't do anything. [ crying ] >> reporter: the three children and family friend who survived are all going to be okay. now sometime this afternoon the children's father showed up, visibly distraught. we understand from neighbors

that the couple had separated several months ago and that's about also the same time neighbors tell us the mother couldn't pay the electric bill and her electricity was cut off. we have no idea if that had anything to do with the fire. the fire it under investigation. peggy fox, in lorton, 9 news now. >> peggy, this story is so heart breaking to hear and see. how long did it take the fire department to get there? >> reporter: lesli, the fire department said the call came in at 8:32 and they were here within 3 minutes. so they got here quickly. i think nobody noticed the fire until it was so far along. >> peggy fox reporting. peggy, thank you. we now know the identity of a mother murdered outside of her prince george's county apartment. police say 49-year-old jacqueline bass was shot. neighbors say she was moving out of her old apartment on greenbelt road into a home she just purchased. police believe she was killed when she returned to the apartment to move out more things. her killer is still out there.

howard county police are on a hunt for a man they are calling the preppy burglar. surveillance shows the suspect dressed in a tie and white shirt in the front home of a home in highland. howard county police are offering a $500 reward to help find this preppy burglar. lawmakers are hearing from people who got sick during the salmonella outbreak from this summer and from the company owners at the center of the investigation. joel brown joins us live from capitol hill where food safety took center stage today. joel? >> reporter: lesli, this list of victims started to multiply over the summer and some of the people are still feeling the effects. today we heard their stories and we got an apology from the owner of the egg farms responsible for the outbreak. this 77-year-old colorado grandmother went into septic shock and nearly died after

eating a salmonella tainted appetizer in july. >> it was a fever, vomiting, diarrhea. >> reporter: carol is one of the other 1600 victims of the nation's largest salmonella outbreak. it caused a recall of thousands of eggs. >> americas should be able to have their eggs over easy without having to worry that the eggs will make them queasy. >> reporter: the owner of one of the egg farms at the center of the outbreak has a history of safety violations in three states that goes back 20 years. when fda inspectors visited hillendale farms, they found live rodents and mice at both farms. at wright county egg, they found maneur piled so deep it was leaking through a building foundation and at both locations they found maggots and flies near the egg belts. the owner of wright county eggs offered an apog to those -- an

apology to those sickened by the eggs. >> i have prayed several times every day for improved health. >> reporter: but carol wants more than apologies. >> clean up his act. clean up his chicken farm. he knows better than that. >> reporter: she and other victims urge congress to push through tougher regulations for food safety. no deaths have been linked to the outbreak but the fda still hasn't put it's finger on what caused it. >> joel, in the words of carol la bodo, is the egg farm cleaning up its act? have they made any changed? >> reporter: both owners testified they made significant safety changes since the recall. wright county eggs said it boosted security and safety standards after the recall, even going ahead to say it will remove all of its chickens that haven't been vaccined against

salmonella and that goes above current federal guidelines. >> joel brown reporting. thank you. a high level sit down between the new mayor vincent gray and michelle rhee is set to take place tomorrow. as we first reported yesterday, the two officials will meet friday at noon at gray's office at the wilson building. michelle rhee has made it clear she doesn't think she would work in a gray administration. she backed mayor fenty in last week's primary. tomorrow theresa lewis will be the first one in years put to death in the commonwealth. she provided sex in exchange for the murders of her husband and stepson. her final meal request includes two breasts of fried chicken, sweetpeas with butter, a dr pepper and german cake or apple

pie for dessert. scott broom reports that prosecutors have dna linking weapons that killed trooper wesley brown. >> reporter: dna is now part of this cop killer case and opens the door to the possibility that the accused trigger man may face the death penalty. 27-year-old cyril cornelius williams is the man investigators believe killed wesley brown june 11th outside of an appleby's restaurant in suitland where brown was working security. today prosecutors revealed they have dna evidence recovered from the handgun they believe was used to gun down the trooper. >> dna was recovered. we haven't publicly released the results of that. >> reporter: dna is important because it's among the short list of requirements to bring a death penalty case in maryland. glenn ivey said the death penalty has not been ruled out in the trooper brown murder. >> that will help to determine what we can do on that front here. >> reporter: the suspect, cyril

williams, was seen in security video being ejected by brown at the restaurant. and he returned with an acquaintance with a pistol and gun downed the moonlighting trooper outside. anthony milton is charged as an accomplice in the case. the gun was found at his house and he's the only witness who identified williams as the gunman. his defense lawyer seized on those facts suggesting that milton might be lying to protect himself. but with dna in the mix, the judge ruled there is probable cause to take this case to trial. scott broom, 9 news now. >> both williams and milton are being held without bond. sky 9 was over beltsville today where police believe the street race was the cause of a serious accident. two teenage boys suffered injuried in the 3100 block of powder mill road. they are students at northwestern high. firefighters had to cut the teen out of the car and the

other teen was ejected. but the teen's injuries are not life-threatening. and a rocker trailer -- a tractor trailer accident near woodbine in howard county. the crash closed two westbound lanes of 70 for an extended period of time. they are investigating the cause. and if you take i-270 you want to listen to this story. overnight tonight the southbound lanes after exit 10, that's route 117, will be completely shut down for two 15- minute intervals. that mean it will be closed between midnight and 4:00 a.m. tomorrow morning and that will allow crews to put up a sign for the intercounty connector. drivers can use route 355 as an alternative. let's get a check on our traffic with patranya. >> the showers and thunderstorms putting a wrinkle on the evening commute, adding to the delays on the american

new revelations about the war in afghanistan. a new book about president obama portrays a national secure the team deeply divided over the u.s. war strategy. manuel gullegos reports on bob woodward's look inside the white house. >> reporter: president obama keeps pushing for a way out of afghanistan in the pages of a new book. it chronicles the behind the scenes battle between the administration and the military leaders over the war. watergate journalist bob woodward has had access to presidents for decades an interviewed president obama for obama's wars. the president tells his

secretaries of state and defense, i'm not doing ten years, i'm not doing long-term nation building. i am not spending a trillion dollars. when president obama finally agrees to add 30,000 troops in a short-term escalation, the pentagon asked for another 4500. that prompts the president to erupt, i'm done doing this. historians see president obama falling into the same struggle as his predecessors during vietnam. >> lyndon johnson recognized the quantitiry he was in. richard nixon recognized the quantitiry they were -- quandary they were in, but they all tried to muddle through rather than taking the historically correct decision of getting out. >> the united states of america does not quit once it starts on something. >> reporter: according to woodward, president obama knows what happened in the past, but doesn't see a clear path out of afghanistan. >> he can't seem to find an answer here and he knows that it's undermining everything

that he wants to do at home. >> reporter: president obama did tell woodward he doesn't think about the war in terms of winning or losing, he's focused on a strategy that would leave afghanistan stronger when the troops do come home. manuel gullegos, cbs news. >> a senior administration official said the debates in this book are well-known and in sifts the president comes off as a commander in chief who is analytical, strategic and decisive. the book hits store shelves next week. we learned a navy sailer is among the nine u.s. military personnel killed in this week's helicopter crash in southern afghanistan. brandon loony lived in silver spring, graduated from damascus high school in 1999. we have reaction from the people who knew him, armondo. >> reporter: in his high school graduation book he wrote you should never beg for what you can earn. and he earned the right to be called an office and a gentleman and some say that

spirit was fostered here on the playing field of the high school. >> our school motto is gentlemen and scholars and he lived up to that. >> reporter: 11 years ago this is where you would have found brendan loony. >> he would be the leader of the team. >> reporter: he was a star athlete on the football and baseball teams. even then his former coach said brendan had the right stuff. >> leadership is something very hard to develop, especially among your peers, especially at that age and he was a great, great leader. >> reporter: after graduating from the naval academy in 2004, he became a navy seal. he die add long with eight others after his blackhawk helicopter crashed in southern afghanistan on tuesday. >> reporter: and brend ons family are devastating. they are on the way to dover delaware air base where they are expecting his remains. armando trull, 9 news now.

six months after became law president obama is reintroducing his signature health care reform bill on people who benefited. in falls church the president talked to people who have had changes in her life from the program, including a hemophilly acwho can no longer be limb named -- be eliminated under the new law and a teacher who's school did not offer health care. >> when we heard it was effective in july first we got right onto it. we called people and got all of the criteria in order so that we were actually insured on july 1st. >> a new a.p. poll shows just 30% of americans say they are in favor of the government program that extends health coverage to 32 million uninsured americans. the pride is growing at the national zoo. three new lyon cubs were born this morning. a total of 7 new cubs have arrived over the past three weeks. they were fathered by luke, a 4-

legion bridge. we have the heaviest weather to the north of us, up into pennsylvania. i don't think that will get into maryland. and heaviest down to the south and west of us, through orange county, madison county, west of fredericksberg. this is between ruckersville and orange. now this is hail to the south of ruckersville. the system is drifting off to the south and east so it will eventually cross over 522 in the next 40 minutes or so. they are moving slowly so you have gusty winds, some hail and also some good rain. let's go to the computer. temperature wise it still feels like summer, doesn't it? 94 downtown. 91 in college park. 89 in beltsville. 86 in rockville and cooler out to the west, 76 in reston. because we had a shower. but back up to 90 in sterling. so for tonight, severe thunderstorm watch until 10:00. early storm, some could be heavy. partly cloudy and mild.

kevin costner returned to washington today to talk about this summer's disaster in the gulf of mexico. the actor testified before congressional investigators examining the response to the deepwater herrize -- horizon oil spill. >> the opportunity for us today is to move forward. we have a choice in all things but what we cannot accept is the return to status quo. deserves a -- america deserves a no nonsense approach to the

spills now and in the future. >> bp bought 32 machines capable of separating crude from oil, water mixtures from costner. paris hilton was denied entry into japan and it comes two days after she pled guilty to cocaine possession charges in las vegas. japan has victim grace laws that bar people convicted of drug offenses. she canceled appearances in malaysia and indonesia. speculation of charges in the mel gibson case may be coming. tmz reports e-mails are from one of gibson and profanity laced fights. gibson writes, i'm losing my grip. i'm stuck. i tried to be okay, but it overpowers me and i'm something i don't want to be. she replies, please don't

those with multiple sclerosis. movers came to help a woman at 11th street and otis place in columbia heights. her belongings stretched four blocks along the sidewalk. new at 5:30, kristin fisher takes a closer look at how it all got there. >> it is not fair. it's not human. it's cold hearted. >> reporter: at 5:00 a.m., louisa diaz was beyond devastated. she had just been evicted from her home and her stuff was hours away from being shipped off to the city dump. to give you an idea of how much stuff we are talking about, it is stacked up on the sidewalk, in some places six feet high and it's like this all the way down this block of 11th street and if you walk with me, you can see across the street it's the exact same thing, piles and piles of stuff all belonging to the same person. >> she's obviously sick. i mean, hoarding is a disease,

right? and this is definitely signs of hoarding. >> reporter: elloicea said she's no horder. she said she was collecting it to send back to poor people in latin america. but some of her neighbors don't buy it. >> do you feel bad for her? >> no, i don't. people would say she was sending this stuff back to her country and stuff like, this i don't know how true that is. but the fact of the matter is it don't make no sense for somebody to hoarde like this. it clogs up the whole neighborhood. i think it's ridiculous. >> reporter: others are more sympathetic. >> i think it's a tragedy how much the system is not working for people. she's been living next door to us for the last six or seven years and she's always working so for it to come to this, it's a tragedy. >> reporter: a tragic tale of eviction or that of a chronic harder. either way her white knight arrived in the form of a free moving truck from jk moving and storage. >> do you think all of her stuff will fit? >> not in this truck. we have backup on the way.

>> i'm feeling blessed. i'm blessed, thank you lord. >> reporter: kristin fisher, 9 news now. >> it did take three moving vans. she doesn't have a permanent place to stay as of yet but a man who saw this story did offer her a job taking care of his grandmother. caldwell banker released the annual list of most expensive and least expensive housing markets in the united states. >> let's break it down. the most costly place to buy a house is new board beach, california, where the average four bedroom two bath cost $1.8 million. the least expensive city is detroit where the same home costs $68,000. in our area the most conveniencive city in virginia is alexandria where the average is $703,500. the least expensive is lynchberg at $165,000. in maryland, the most expensive city is bethesda where the average home costs $807,000.

the least expensive is hagerstown at $256,000. and the average home in the district costs $539,000. plans to build a bus transit center in langley park got a boost in the form of $818,000 federal grant. it would serve bus riders in montgomery and prince george's counties. it's expected to be built at the intersection of university boulevard and new hampshire avenue. maryland is looking for a developer to make the area around the new carrollton metro a liveable community. alley wants to turn the 39 acres into a planned community featuring homes, shops and businesses. a decision on a developer is expected by the end of the year. fall starts later tonight. officially it feels like summer out there. topper shutt with our out-and- about forecast. >> temperatures still in the low 90s. and i stepped into the web center because we launched a where-you-live website and this is how it is supposed to work.

the end of a high-speed chase in florida captured on tape. it reached speeds up to 90 miles per hour before this crash. one of the suspects tried to make a run for it before he was tasered. three other suspects were pulled from the car by police which that car was in fact stolen. from a serious story to one
