went to the applebys and that williams waited near a tree and shot at brown as he left the restaurant. both williams and milton are being held without bond. we also have an update on a murder investigation in greenbelt. today police released the identity of the woman killed outside of her apartment. police still do not know who shot 49-year-old jacqueline bass to death. it happened just as she was about to start a if you life. she was going to be moving into a new home. police have not made any arrests in this case. now to the tragedy in lorton, virginia. a mother and two of her children killed in a fire, but her quick thinking saved the lives of her three other children. with flames all around her, she and her two -- or she told her two older children to jump out of a second story window and dropped her 2-month-old baby to safety. but there wasn't enough time to save everyone. the fire broke out inside a home on richmond, highway. peggy fox is live near the

scene and, peggy, this is a real heartbreaker. >> it certainly is. >> reporter: as parents we know, we save our children first. save yourself later. well that's exactly what happened here this morning when this young family was awakened by the smell of smoke. >> and i knew the kids were still in there. c.i.a. c.i.a. >> i asked her where they were at and they said they are still in the house. and we couldn't do anything. >> reporter: there was nothing they could do but watch the home burn with a mother and two of her small children inside. the neighbors say the young mother sacrificed herself to save three of her five children, getting her 6 and 8- year-old out of the two-story window and dropping her 2-month- old baby into the arms of a family friend. >> the mother threw her out of the second story window because the unck -- to the uncle and that's how she got out. >> and the kids? >> the two kids that got out jumped out the window.

>> reporter: it happened before firefighters arrived. >> it sounds like an explosion went off and the flames were just coming out of the windows. >> my son's auntie threw a bicycle through the side window to release the smoke. >> reporter: the call came into fairfax county rescue at 8:32 this morning and they say firefighters arrived within three minutes. but it wasn't soon enough. the fire had already claimed it's victims. >> i just saw the one gentleman and he was only ground and he was screaming and yelling. he was just -- it was horrible. >> reporter: the three children and the family friend who helped rescue them are all going to be okay. now we know that the father of the children arrived here some time this afternoon visibly distraught. earlier this week on monday we're told by a friend that the mother's electricity was turned off. and that last night she went out to buy candles. we're not sure if that had anything to do with the fire. it is of course under investigation.

reporting live in lorton, peggy fox, 9 news now. >> that's just a sad story, peggy. thank you for that. the number of virginia criminals labeled sexually violent predators is growing so fast, that it's straining the capacity of the facility built to hold them. that's according to state officials that hold them. a facility built two years ago can properly hold about 300 people. it already has 214 and within two years the population is expected to reach 356 and twice that number, a mere five years later. and now a state senator has asked the legislature's investigative arm to review the governor's plan to auction off virginia's liquor stores. democrat ed houck wants to know if the plan makes sense economically as governor bob mcdonnell suggests. the governor wants to convene a special election to consider the auction. we are on storm alert tonight.

topper is looking out for special severe weather in virginia. >> we're looking at a severe thunderstorm watch for the entire metro area until 10:00. let me start with live doppler 9000. most of the activity from 3:30 to 4:00 has dissipated. we're seeing a couple of storms up to the north and this has prompted the warnings for adams and franklin and fulton county until 11:00. we are seeing one storm trying to development, and they are few and far between, near the bend of the river, north of leesberg and near poolesville. i don't see any hail with that particular storm. let's go to the computer and we'll talk about where the watch is. it covers the entire metro area until 10:00. this was the hail today between 3:30 and 4:00 in leesberg and i want to thank chris for sending this in. that is quarter sized hail and that's severe. and when that was happening, they were under a severe thunderstorm warning.

we'll come back and talk about whether our threat is diminishing or increasing. i'll have your full forecast in a bit. now we'll remember the life of brend on loony. he lived in silver spring and he was a damaga graduate and was among those killed in a helicopter crash in afghanistan this week. armando is there with the life of this individual. he was quite a guy. >> reporter: very remarkable young man. we've heard a lot of stories about him. 11 years ago he would have been out here playing football with some of those men. but tonight he's being remembered as a hero. in 1999, brend on loony was a stand-out athlete on the football and baseball teams. but those who knew him back then say he was more. >> he was a gentleman and a scholar. if you could point to an alumnis, you could say that's

the kind of person you want to become, that would be brandon loony. >> reporter: he became a naval officer in 2004 and joined the seals. something that doesn't surprise his former coach. >> more so than a real hero, just a real great human being. everything that you would want your son to be. that's what he encompassed and that's who he is and the brandon loony that we know here. >> reporter: he was among the nine u.s. troops killed in tuesday's helicopter crash in southern afghanistan. >> when i first heard about it, my stomach got sick. i couldn't believe it. he had called our trainer wendy north and he was coming home shortly and he was going to come to our football game on october 2nd. >> reporter: and the reason he wanted to come back on october 2nd is because he wanted to meet with the young men you see behind me. he wanted to talk to them about the importance of leadership, the importance of honor and courage. he will not be able to do that, but now his life will stand as

leesberg. it will produce heavy rains. don't see any hail but heavy rains a good bet. rainfall rains 1-2 inches per hour with that tiny storm. now we'll jump the river and go over to poolesville and this will be between poolesville and darnstown. nothing severe, but heavy rain is possible as it rolls around 28 north of seneca and headed toward darnstown. and we have one more storm. and this is a lighter storm picking up in intensity just a little bit now on the other side of the beltway, over prince george's county around lanham and cross 50 and down 95 and the rainfall 1-2 inches per hour and that will provide slow going up toward baltimore in the next 40 minutes or so. back to the computer. tomorrow morning, partly cloudy and warm. 60s and 70s with light winds. so again a dry commute tomorrow. and then by afternoon, partly cloudy and hot. perhaps a shower or a thunderstorm. high temperatures once again around 90 and winds out of the south at about 10.
