satellite picture, radar combined. look at the plumes of moisture. we will talk about where it will go overnight and look ahead what could be a nor'easter later in the week. back to you. >> thank you. breaking news to talk about happening out of baltimore right now. dozens of firefighters are on the scene of a row house collapse. you can see it from the sky. it happened just before 3:00 p.m. in west baltimore and there were a report of a woman seen walking on the sidewalk at the time of the row house collapse. so firefighters are removing the rubble by hand trying to find out if she or anyone else is inside. you can see what is left of the row house at this point. so far, they have not found anyone. this is from baltimore, maryland breaking news at this hour. the hundred is on for a hit and run driver in silver spring. a 24-year-old woman was hit by a car while walking near an elementary cool. it happened at 8:00 saturday night on carroll avenue near the intersection of piney

branch road. lindsey mastis joining us live. what do we know about how the is doing on the. >> police say the woman is at the washington hospital trauma center with life-threatening injuries. it has been two day and she's still fighting for her life. where she was hit is just down the street by the tree. police say she was walking along the road. they are not sure whether she was crossing it when a vehicle came bay and she ended up near the backside of this pickup truck. that is 20 feet away. witnesses say she flew through the air. >> we were coming in to the yard and we heard a big boom. >> it didn't take neighbors long to find the 24-year-old woman allock side the road. >> her leg is on the axle and she is laying face down. her flip flops in he middle of the road and her phone broke. >> reporter: police don't know

if she was trying to cross the street or walk alongside it. all they know is the car that hit her never stopped. >> the driver should know they hit something. >> reporter: the corporal with montgomery county police say they have a description of the car. >> small, dark sedan, possibly a honda. and it did leave its mirror, its right exterior mirror at the scene. >> reporter: police also say the vehicle may have damage to the passenger side head lights, hood or windshield. neighbors say traffic moves fast along this street and they are upset. >> i didn't sleep. thinking about it. very hard to see somebody dying like that. >> reporter: a corporal says the driver could be facing several charges inlewding leaving the scene of an accident but says there is time for the driver to come forward and that would be taken in to account but the charges, there could be additional ones because no one knows whether

the victim will survive. live in silver spring, 9 news now. today a jury convicted a drunk driver of second-degree murder in the death of l.a. angels pitcher rick adenart and two others. he died after a collision with andrew gallo in fullerton, california. the april 2009 crash killed two of adenhart's friends. this hours after the 22-year- old rookie pitched six scoreless innings in his debut. they shared tears and hugs following the verdict. >> courtney liked to see justice be served, and so i know she's watching over us. >> reporter: gallo was charged with murder because he has a previous dui conviction. prosecutors say the 23-year- old's blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit at the time of that deadly crash. he faces 50 years to life in prison when he is sentenced on

december 10th. two teenagers are under arrest after a 2-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the chest. it happened this morning at an apartment on little elliott drive in hagerstown. police say the boy found a loaded handgun under a bed and accidentally shot himself. he is in critical condition. police say the 18-year-old boy stole the gun and a 17-year-old girl tried to hide it at a nearby playground. they are both charged as adults in the case. a sec teenager is in custody accused of stabbing and robbing a man at a manassas shopping center. the 14-year-old was arrested at his home on thursday. police say he and a 15-year-old accomplice attacked a 59-year- old property inspector last tuesday after that man refuse to hand over his wallet. the victim was treated for three stab wounds. montgomery county police are looking for a man who raped a woman yesterday in germantown. it happened in the middle of the night in the woods near 355

and highpoint drive. investigators say a 21-year-old silver spring woman was walking toward a 7-eleven when she was grabbed from behind and forced in the wooded area. police are offering a reward up to $1,000 for helping to find the attacker. a dc tourist accused in the death of his dog pleaded guilty to charges of animal cruelty today. kenneth reese was sentenced to a year of probation and 40 hours of community service. authorities say he left the dog with another dog in a hot car for hours while he visited the holocaust museum last month. the 8-year-old chihuahua died. two people are dead and two others in the hospital after a crash this afternoon on route 50 just before the bay bridge. the crash happened around 1:00 near bay dale drive. investigators say two box trucks were involved and one flipped over. the crash shut down two westbound lanes of route 50 for hours. and there's no word on whether the rain was a factor.

>> maryland's first slots parlor since being approved four years ago is now open for business. the perryville hollywood casino is just off of 95, about 60 miles north of the beltway. scott broom reports, even though the opening was three days early an announced 12 hours ahead of time a big crowd was there. >> reporter: what's remarkable about this is how quickly it happened and how many showed up on short notice when the doors here in per i haveville opened at 8:00 this morning. >> i hope you are ready to have a bunch of fun. >> reporter: the $97 million casino in perryville. >> my husband got me 0 out of bed and said let's take a ride. >> reporter: an unexpected opening announced on the late evening news turned out thousands a few hours lair. among them 92-year-old thelma adams who wore what she called her magic hat for good luck. >> i put an abracadabra on the place. i'm going to win.

to state revenue estimates the casino may have collected the first $900,000 in perryville, scott broom, 9 news now. >> wow. anne arundel county voters will decide whether or not to avow a similar casino will be built at the anne arundel mills mall when they go to the polls in november. the secret service says some major new security upgrades at the vice president's home in northwest aren't just routine. the washington examiner reports they include a ten foot high security fence and more security check points an the home at the naval observatory. it is expected to cost $1.7 million and the secret service says they are not in response to any explicit threats. union station tops the list of 25 busiest metro stations, averaging 32,745 riders during the last week of may -- i should say during the last week of may, oh, yeah. that's what i said. metro center was in second.

the least busiest station for the second year in a row, friendship heights average gilbert arenas is speaking for the first time since his arrest on gun charges. >> brett haber is just back from wizards camp and is joining us on what the controversial wizards star had to say. >> when ted leonsis took over the wizards he said one of his jobs would be to reintroduce the fan base to arenas. we assume that would mean he would show contrition for past deeds and gratitude for getting a second chance. apparently not. a rather surlily and seemingly disinterested arenas showed up at media day today. his first public appearance since released from the halfway house in may. arenas sporting a scruffy beard and number nine on his uniform was required to answer questions from reporters, but did so without a smile and only briefly, in a manner that suggested he was not happy to

number one issue, president obama got a chance today to put his signature on one last piece of stimulus legislation before voters go to the polls in a few weeks. president obama is trying to convince americans he's doing all he can to turn the economy around. at the white house, he signed a new jobs bill that brought cheers from these small business owners. >> it was critical we cut tax and make more loans available to small entrepreneurs. small business create me most jobs in the country. >> reporter: it may not help the president's party it a poll shows more americans trust the republicans to fix unemployment. the propose at of the president and those on the other side of the aisle to raise taxes on small businessmen and women and threaten job creation is the wrong medicine. >> reporter: with the election five weeks away and control of

congress at stake, voters want to know who they can trust to revive the economy and they aren't particularly happy with either party. >> the democratic party is unpopular. this is all about whipping up the base in to a frenzy. >> reporter: to do that, both sides are trotting out their biggest stars. sarah palin and mitt romney are crisscrossing the country campaigning for gop candidates. president obama has been working hard for the democrats but now they are enlisting michelle obama and former president clinton who both have higher approval ratings than the president. but it may not be enough to convince voters to give democrats another chance in november. the small business bill barely made it to the president's desk. two republicans crossed party lines to push through it. >> how many jobs are they talking about? >> let me tell you what it

does. it creates a small business lending fund. that is expected to translate in to $3 billion in small business loans. the idea is if you can get new businesses with credit and money they will hire again. that is estimated to add up to 500,000 new jobs. of course with a 9.6 unemployment rate, 500,000 through jobs is a small dent. >> you said that right. thank you for that. a review of how the obama administration reacted to the disaster in the gulf is already underway. the national commission on the bp deep water horizon oil spill and off shore drilling began the two-day meeting in dc. the panel is looking at who is in charge with making critical decisions after 200 million- gallons of evidence crude oil began to spill in the gulf of mexico. nearly 100 protesters demanding an end to a form of surface mining were arrested today in washington. they were taken away after refusing orders from park police to leave the sidewalk outside of the white house.

they were demanding an end to mountain top removal coal mining saying the process pollutes water and destroys mountains. coal companies say it is a cheap reliable way to extract coal and create jobs. >> talking about a lot of rain the next few hours. quite a downpour today. >> the biggest threat is west of town and east of 81. i think everybody should be aware that everyone is under a flood watch until 8:00. start with a big picture of radar. this is titan and you see the moisture to the south. haven't seen this in a while where we get the tropical air masses and almost like a conveyer belt. this activity is moving almost due north. you see the activity to the east of raleigh. it will move up 95. that's why we think the biggest threat will be east of 985 and -- 95 and 81. we will have rain in the immediate area but the biggest threat is west and east of us. get tighter and go to live doppler 9000 hd. you can access this on our

website at wusa9.com. and with our weather app it is a great way to track the activity. around the beltway it is quiet. we are getting lucky. some of you will get home without rain showers but to the west a different story. pretty heavy rain showers and few embedded thunderstorms in between hume and up to hagerstown over to cumberland. this is heavy rain. nothing severe right now. although there is potential that some of these could produce a little rotation. we had a tornado warning earlier that howard covered earlier in howard county. we will watch these overnight. there is some conditions that could be conducive to some of these turning in to damaging winds. the next hour, this moves dew north. clips middleburg with heavy rain as it pushes to the north and crosses 66. go to the computer. for tonight, here's the deal. flash flood watch, rain and thunderstorms. some heavy. some severe. temperatures 65 to 70 and wins south southeast at 10 to 20 and

gusting. remember, never cross a flooded street by car or foot. check your sump pump. sometimes they are unplugged and your basement floods and check the basement or attic before the rain is heavier. here's a look at the nine future cast. by tonight we will see the heaviest activity west of town. frederick, leesburg, manassas. there's some activity around the beltway in montgomery county and fairfax county but doesn't appear the heaviest access to rain will set up to the west of the immediate metro area. through the night it is cloudy with showers. heavy activity goes in the mountains. some of us will have a wet commute tomorrow. i'd plan on a wet commute and extra time too. through the day the showers give way to sunshine as we get in to the afternoon hours. and pretty warm day tomorrow. lows tonight, sticky really. 70 downtown. 66 in rockville, 65 gaithersburg. and some 60s to the west. 66 fairfax and reston but everybody is pretty much

between 65 and 70. level playing field. tomorrow morning, showers ending. breezy and mild. 55 to 75. and by afternoon, decreasing clouds. some sun. highs around 80 and winds southwesterly at 10 to 15. so let's talk about breaking down tomorrow now. rain and showers in the morning, 72. nice by lunchtime. clouds on the way out and warm, 80 by everyone evening. a strong finish to the day it looks like. the next three days we are looking at rain showers in the morning on tuesday, and then afternoon clouds on wednesday. and then perhaps a nor'easter on thursday. we haven't had a nor'easter yet. we'll keep you posted on that. 85 on wednesday. 76 thursday. and then in the wake of the storm, probably the coolest air so far a mix of sun and clouds on friday, saturday and sunday. and kind of chilly in the 60s, only 62 for a high on sunday. back up to 70 next monday. >> feeling like fall. >> yeah.

president obama makes some candid comments about dc schools, saying his daughters couldn't get the same education in public school they are getting if private classrooms. caught on tape, sparks fly when a delta airlines flight make an emergency landing after experiencing landing gear problems. and the southwest airlines proposed merger with airtran could clear the way for low- cost carrier to offer flights at reagan national airport. the top story at 5:30, president obama started the school week off today with a call for a longer school year. he also said the worst performing schoolteachers have got to go. if they don't improve quickly. in response to a question, the president explained his daughters who attend sidwell friends could get the same education at a dc public school. >> think dc public school systems are struggling. they have made important strides over the last several years to move in the direction

of reform. there are some terrific individual schools in the dc system. and that's true, by the way, in every city across the country. >> reporter: the president's remarks come as dc's school chancellor michelle rhee weighs whether to stay or leave. if she goes, vincent gray says education reform continues to be a top priority. new at 5:30, our bruce johnson got inside of the a school in southwest today where rhee's performance was being reported. >> it is fair to say that most of the students at this elementary school in southwest dc don't have the same educational opportunities as the president's two daughters. >> if you had a chance to talk to the president, what would you tell him? you are wrong for saying that. >> this school is wonderful. >> reporter: the president's job to get this school to the.where students are reading

and doing math at the national averages. last year, scores up significantly but this year, math scores up by only one point. >> one of the biggest problems we have is engaging parents more in the process. >> reporter: reading scores are down by 7 points. that's the way it goes in a public school where students are arriving and leaving every year, moving from neighborhood to neighborhood. and in some cases, house to house. >> we have students coming from various areas of the city, with a lot of different needs, not just academic but social and emotional needs, as well. so in this reform process we can't go at it alone. we can't be the schools and teachers going at it alone. >> reporter: the principal has been there for two years and they have 350 students this year, 20 more than last year. not a big increase but the principal says it is a start. the school hasn't fallen in to the category of no school improvement status but other schools are. then the federal no child left

behind act requires michelle rhee to take drastic steps like replacing the principal and teachers and allowing parents to transfer students to other public schools. >> would you be in favor of a longer school day. >> definitely. the more time the better. we don't have enough time in the day to get everything we need to get done. as you can imagine competition to get in to schools is fierce. >> only so much spots available. >> even the staunchest reformers admit that. long way to go. if you live in alexandria you may have had trouble getting in touch with government offices today. there was a problem with the

by 2025 at frederick knew municipal. >> middle east peace talks between israelis and palestinians maybe at a halt. palestinians threatened to pull out of the peace talks unless israel extending the ban. on a recent trip to paris, abbas said he would not make any hastey decisions. israel says it remains committed to the peace talks. a british businessman who owns the company that makes segways has died in an accident riding one of those vehicles. police in northern england say the 62-year-old and a segway were found in the river there. they say someone reported seeing a man fall over a 30- foot drop yesterday. he bought control of the new hampshire company last december. a levee failure forced hundreds of people from their homes and those who stayed behind are now stranded.

authorities say part of the levee eroded yesterday and water began to leak out. water flooded the only road in and out of the neighborhood. >> around here the dc metro going to be a stormy evening tonight. topper is out on the terrace with the latest storm alert. >> right now in northwest it is cloudy but no showers. i would hang on to this tonight and through tomorrow morning. here's the out and about forecast. i would expect scattered showers and thunderstorms about 6:00, 74. kind of muggy, too. and then we get in to 8:00 hour. well, still looking at showers and thunderstorms. some could be heavy. some will produce heavy down experience tropical air mass. as we get in to 10:00, temperatures in the low 70s. not going to fall much with some showers and perhaps a thunderstorm. so sort of keep that in mind. show you live doppler 9000 hd and we have, it is pretty quiet for the time being around the beltway, montgomery county, the district and fairfax county. to the west big showers and thunderstorms and it's training

due north. so anything south of you will come due north and hit you. we have reports now of anywhere from up to two to four inches of rain out in to western section of loudoun county and one to two inches of rain just with this batch as i rolls up 81 toward hagerstown. again that will be the focal.i think really of the flooding. it will be west of town on the east side of i-81. sort of keep that in mind. the entire metro area is under a flash flood watch. we will go to peggy fox in bethesda where emergency responders are preparing for the possibility of flooding. >> oh, i'm sorry. we are here at the -- sorry about that. we are here at the cabin john fire and rescue station and they are preparing for potential rescues. they are keeping a close ear to

the weather forecast and we have lieutenant with us here. what kind of rescues are you anticipating that might be possible tonight? >> the most common type of rescues with heavy flooding are people trying to drive their car through flooded roadways. >> that's something we see pretty often. and we are expecting perhaps a lot of rain tonight. you have your boat here. why would you bring your boat to a rescue on a roadway? we would bring the boat because it is one of the tools that we have. we may need it. if you don't have it you regret not having i and we have other equipment that we keep and carry on it. >> a lot of equipment. might have a river rescue. unlikely the rains coming overnight. >> correct. >> now, you also want to say do not drive through flooded roadways. that's the most important thing. >> the standard rule of thumb is if someone cannot see the road do not try to drive across it if you can't see it. >> good advice. if they didn't do that they
