the shootings started after a funeral for a recent murder victim. kristin fisher is live at the -- bruce johnson is live at the scene. >> reporter: from 9th until 13th looking west, u street is closed down and it's because of that overturned car, suv in the middle of the road. there's a bangedup mercedes behind that and a verizon truck behind that. we have got injuries back there. we had a body pulled out of the overturned van. the funeral, there were five metropolitan police officers assigned to that funeral and still couldn't stop that violence today. the famed u street corridor, home to duke ellington looked more like downtown kandahar today. a bullet riddled car overturned, broken glass and bullet casings in the streets. >> it's getting better but it scares you. >> a car flipped over and then a young -- somebody's feet were sticking out of the car. >> reporter: police say the incident began at the walker memorial baptist church in the 2100 block of 13th street. hundreds of young people had

gathered for the funeral of ashley mccray. she had been shot and killed two weeks earlier in southeast. funeral is over, everybody coming outside and then what happened? >> about maybe 30 minutes later that's when we heard gunshots. >> reporter: according to sources, a group of men came from an alley at 13th and u street and opened fire on an suv as people leaving the funeral were entering that vehicle. >> there are some participants we believe that were at the funeral who had walked a couple blocks down to get in their car. as they attempted to get in their car, presumably to get into the funeral procession, suspects approached the car and opened fire on the individuals in that car. >> reporter: the suv flipped over, a passenger identified only as jamal was shot and killed. he had been hit multiple times. the driver of the van identified only as little phil was shot and wounded. sources say the carnage is but the latest violence in a long

running feud between neighborhood gangs, the 1-7 crew from the cardoza area and the 14th and gerard street gang. >> you have to have people in place and not just mpd. you have to have people from the community in place that's working with these guys to be able to keep an eye on stuff. >> reporter: read the signs, know the language? >> yes. >> reporter: didn't have that here? >> no, not today. >> reporter: despite some reports you may have heard elsewhere, police do not have anybody in custody. we just checked with police officials here on the scene. they are looking for a light colored crown victoria in connection with these shootings. you can imagine how many of those kind of vehicles we have got in the city. also we can report that councilman jim graham is saying his information is that this all started from taunting during or immediately after that funeral and people went to their vehicles and came out with guns after that. back to you. >> so they have got this sense that this is, you know, two gangs beefing again, more senseless violence. any other leads on who might have actually pulled the trigger? >> reporter: i don't think they have any idea. you know, at 13th and gerard, many blocks north of here,

police saturated that area shortly after the violence broke out here, they went door to door, obviously looking for people connected with the 14th and gerard crew or gang or whatever they are called, they came away empty handed. they didn't have anything but they got some idea of what they are looking for. they are looking for the other end of the war, the battles that are going on here, members of that 14th and gerard gang. >> hopefully they get to the bottom of this soon. thank you for that. now let's get you caught up on an update here. police have released the name of that pedestrian badly injured in a hit-and-run accident. 22-year-old danny mateo. police sigh a driver -- say a driver hit her about 8:30 last night along the 8700 block of carol avenue in silver spring and she is still in critical condition. police have released a new description of the vehicle they are looking for but there are several possibilities. it could be a 1994 through '98 gmc jimmy, chevy s10 pickup or a blazer, even an oldsmobile

bravado. it probably has a cracked windshield. it is probably damaged in the right headlight, probably has dents in the hood and a broken passenger side mirror. another legal setback, a big one for the walter reed doctor who refuse tos deploy to -- refuses to deploy to afghanistan until he sees president obama's original birth certificate. a military judge at fort meade in maryland proved that the president's birth records were irrelevant to the case that could send terrence lakin to prison. bruce is back with the details. >> reporter: this is the controversy that absolutely will not go away. polls suggest that a quarter of americans doubt president obama was born in the united states, even though there are all kinds of mainstream news organizations that have depunked the so-called -- debunked the so-called birth or argument. you can see pictures of his hawaiian birth certificate that shows he was born in honolulu.

it is impossible for us to put on a defense without them. >> reporter: you have nothing left? >> we have been deprived of everything. what is left? >> reporter: the obama campaign did release a short form certification of live birth. it shows the president was born in honolulu, the state health director and registrar of vital statistics say state law prevents them from releasing the original birth certificate with the signatures. >> president clinton said he didn't have sex with that woman, monica la wince lieu wins key. what are they trying to hide? >> reporter: the military judge did delay the start of the trial for a month to give the defense more time to ask that court of appeals for help. >> if the appeals court goes against lieutenant colonel laken too, then what is he going to do? he's left with what they call the good soldier defense and
