from the first local station with news and high definition, this is 9news now. there is breaking now tonight. u street closed down after somebody started shooting right after a funeral this afternoon. we've been on this story for you since this afternoon. my colleague is live on the scene right now. >> in about two hours they are hoping to have the corridor open again, but right now it's still closed. if not for this police tape you'd be able to walk down the road. if you've done so, walk down the street, you would have done so at your own pearl.

it was just afternoon at the height of the lunch hour when all hell seemed to break loose. racing cars, shots fired, crashes, people ducking for cover. >> saw a bunch of people running down the street. from there, i went outside to see what was going on, then i saw a car flipped over and somebody's feet was sticking out of the car. >> police say the incident began after a funeral was letting out. hundreds of young people gathered for the funeral of ashley mccray. funeral is over, everybody is coming outside, then what happened? >> about 30 minutes later, gun shots object corner. >> quarter of a block away. you heard gun shots. did everybody scatter?

>> everybody scattered. >> the group of men came from an alley and opened fire on an suv as people leaving the funeral were entering that vehicle. >> everyone was outside down the block from the funeral home. the suv flipped over, a passenger was shot and killed, he had been hit multiple times. the driver of the van was shot and wounded. >> we believe that two different groups were involved that were down in the area because the funeral was in this area and they got into a conflict. we don't know exactly what kicked it off, then the gun fire erupted. >> reporter: right now, this is the only way to identify the two groups, one is called the 17 crew, the other is called the 14 and jerard crew. police are looking for members that are responsible for these

shootings, the victims were of the 17 crew. we're told this all started over taunting that took place before and after that funeral. >> did it have anything to do with the funeral itself, bruce? >> reporter: it had nothing to do with the victim other than some victims may have known her. she was shot and killed in a domestic situation. that was senseless also, the motive there was she had spoken to somebody at a party other than her boyfriend and he's in charge. >> thank you, sir, we appreciate that. now turning to the traffic center. u street is still closed down. >> that's right you saw that crime scene tape still up, meaning the roads are still closed between 9th and 14th street, so you want to avoid that area. if you have to be down there, you want to take florida

everything. what is left? >> the obama campaign did release a short form certification of live birth. >> what do you think about the protest? should he follow orders and deploy or does he have a right to demand what he believes to be his commander in chief's credentials? the senate is expected to vote tomorrow on a measure to keep the government in business. the stopgap spending bill will put a stop to a government shut down that would have happened friday. it includes .1.9 billion for the race to the top education grant and 1.2 billion against the department of agriculture. a median household income puts our area at the top of the salary scale nationwide. the new numbers out today find

the dc area workers have the highest salaries of any major u.s. city. in fact, every other major u.s. city saw drops in income. one said dc's salary stayed steady because the federal government is a stable source of income and jobs. federal employees maybe getting a discount. the bike rental service got going last week, and the management says the special deal will give federal employees access to 1,000 bikes in dc and arlington, but the exact details of that discount are still being worked out. amtrak says it's looking to the future and sees it as being fast. amtrak's president says the rail system has a 30-year, $117 billion plan to reduce travel times along the eastern sea board. that would include a high speed

jimmy carter spending the night at a cleveland hospital after falling ill on a flight this morning. the 85 year old was starting to feel sick, he was treated for an upset stomach and will spend the night in a hospital as a precaution. he will resume his current book tour here in dc tomorrow. a maryland couple is suing their land lord claiming their apartment was infested with bedbugs. they say they had to move out and throw away most of their possessions including all of their 3 year old daughter's toys. bedbugs have been found around here lately and leave itchy welts on people and maybe in

right now, president obama just took the stage at a rally out at the university of wisconsin. this is one of several stops planned for this week as he tries to get voters excited for the november mid-term elections. the president says a stronger education system is a key part of his plan for long-term economic recovery. he's scheduled to be in richmond tomorrow. president obama is lending his support to martin o'malley. that democrat is in a tough

reelection bid. the president recorded a 60- second radio ad supporting o'malley. that started running in baltimore today and will run in dc closer to next week. >> urlich is accusing o'malley of deceiving residents. he said the administration tried to coverup a report on the recovery. saying it faultered but only for five hours last month, only to be replaced by a more upbeat summary. back then the agency said that memo was supposed to be internal, not public. >> i'm angry at the members of the general assembly and the finance committee, and mad at the maryland citizens that my government is hiding things from me to promote public political campaign. today alex sanchez said it

10. let's talk about the outside story. heavy rain likely on thursday, critical time 3:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. severe weather is also possible. check your sump pump, basement, attic, and gutters. partly cloudy and cool tomorrow morning, by afternoon, clouds come in quickly. highs near 75 degrees. satellite picture, this is the tropical moisture that's streaming northward. doesn't matter if this turns into a tropical storm because the moisture is coming our way anyway, it's always the rains and flooding that gets us, not so much wind. lines closer together, more confluent and agreement. this is going close to going over us or to the west of us. again, that would mean severe weather. critical times, 3:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. severe weather is possible.

right here in this neighborhood, i grew up learning strong families and hard work means opportunity. and that starts with good schools. it's a tradition here in maryland-- and why in these tough times i've put education first. we've made record investments in our classrooms... doubled the number of charter schools... and we've frozen college tuition for four years in a row. and it's working. experts say we now have the number one schools in the nation. when it comes to expanding opportunity in every neighborhood, i know that we must do even better.

in the mail bag tonight, reaction to the president's statement yesterday that there is no way at all his two daughters could get the same education at the dc public schools as the private school. president obama was just being honest. everybody agrees while city schools are improving, they have a long, long way to go. i don't know many parents that could afford to send them to private school options in the city. the rich is still great. ray says he disagrees with the president on everything, but not on this. the quality of public school education has collapsed over the last several decades. i believe there are three reasons, one, too much social engineering going on in school and too little education, another, few teachers are able to keep their jobs and parents
