weather. it is friday, october 1st and the aftermath of the big weather that we will be talking about. good morning. i'm andrea roane. angie goff has the traffic. we have the roads closed because of flooding conditions and trees down. we begin with howard bernstein because we're on the upside of the downpours of yesterday. >> the downpours are leaving quickly. they are in delaware and pennsylvania and points knot and east. we have a little rain, drizzle, spotty showers through the morning, but this afternoon promises to return sunshine and a decent start. so a 50/50 week. get you going with a look at what's on the computer. we have another batch of heavy rain overnight. still have a little upper spin in southern virginia, north carolina and until that passes we will have the threat of showers through the morning and then once that passes this actual our weather will improve. the heavy rains across eastern pennsylvania, jersey up 95 this morning up to new york. eastern new york state, parts of new england will be very

difficult but at least the plume of tropical moisture is east of the area and that ends our heavy rain threat. locally we can go back and show you what is happening the past 12 hours. the batch overnight was pouring at times. philly is being creamed right now but in a couple of hoursly that see improvement and new york will get some heavy rain as we head in to the morning and early afternoon. it looks like there's not much going on. go to live doppler 9000 hd first before we get to the flood map. see the spotty showers? they are moving south across frederick county, northern loudoun, montgomery and in to prince georges county see a few spotty light and i want to reiterate light showers in northern calvert, as well. that will be the case and some drizzle out there. s for a the flood warnings are concerned, we have a few for the rivers off to the south and east. most of though flash flood warnings at least in the washington metro are gone. you see a flash flood watch north aniso of us. those will expire in the next

two hours, so the shift of concern for the flash flooding is north and east but we will have river flooding the next day or two as these crests will have to work their way downstream on the potomac and those rivers that normally take a couple of days for the water to drain out. let's talk about the winds. it will be gusty at times wind directions shifted to the north and northwest. 30 miles an hour and that will help to dry things out as we get to the afternoon. temperatures this morning, we're down to 62 at reagan national. 59 in though shenandoah valley. 61 culpeper. still 70 in cambridge. warmer south and east but the cooler, drier air is working its way toward you. temperatures by 9:00, perhaps mid-60s with a light shower going on. i think by lunchtime, 70. 5:00 72 and highs in the low to mid-70s today by the winds could gust to near 30 miles an

hour. it is 4:03. the problems are lingering with the roads. >> we have a few things going on out there. happy friday. hope you are off to a great start. right now looks like the calm for commuters following the storm, but we still have water main breaks and flooding keeping the roads closed. this is out in chevy chase. willard avenue is closed between river road and north park avenue and notice we have a little bit of flooding going on that is keeping beach drive closed between franklin street and the dc line. let's take it down to virginia and outside. the inner loop at 66 is where we have a report of a disabled vehicle off to the left shoulder. traffic is able to get by fine. we are getting reports of a pothole on the 123 exit. something to keep an eye out for. 395 northbound, lanes are wide open from the beltway to the bridge. it is smooth sailing. and in maryland, i want you to know 95 southbound, before nasa

goddard is where we have a downed tree. a it takes away a right lane. be careful and nice and quiet out of frederick. this is the live shot at 109. happy friday. back to you. the rain has left the all clear but is that the case in old town alexandria? jessica is live along king street where conditions there. jessica, i know there was minor street flooding yesterday evening. what's it looking like this morning? >> we were here yesterday morning at this time and we were talking about the risk of flooding down at the end of king street. we're on the strand right now and guess what, it did flood. i'm ankle deep in one of the remaining puddles out here on the strand. if i took two steps in that direction, i would be six inches deep, i am not going to do it because it will junk my boots and i don't want to get wet this early in the morning.

this is video along king street at the end of king street where it terminates by the waterfront. the potomac crested at 1:20. the area area flooded out as it often does because it is so lying. the police barrier was floating in the flooding and we caught up with a boater who was down here checking out his boat at the old country boat club. he had concerns about the weather and this is what he had to say. >> making sure my boat doesn't turn in to a submarine. >> tying it down. >> yes, ma'am, making sure the lines are good. >> when you look at the system coming up the coast it looks pretty ugly. good to be safe. >> reporter: good to be safe. you may want to be safe again today because, of course, we have high tide coming in. i was just down at the waterfront and the water is currently a foot off of cresting the bank. we are heading to low tide.

high tide will come in right after 1:00 today. we could see the entire area flooded out again and tomorrow more concerns because that's when the runoff will hit the potomac. all the rain is working through the system and it will dutch in to the river and we could see more flooding. what can you do? you can sandbag and the city of alexandria is still providing sandbags for residents. how you get the residents, you go to king and lee street and bring your proof of i.d. and take away some sandbags. thus far, very few people have been doing that and it is turning out to be a windy brisk morning out here. and with that i am going to send it back to you. stay with us for continuing coverage of the storm alert. we will have life weather and traffic updates for you and we want to see how the rainstorm has affected you. e-mail your photos to wusa9.com or post them on our facebook page. the address is

facebook.com/wusa9. if you are on twitter, hash tag tweets to dc flood an we will get them on the air and on wusa9.com. in the district, crews spent part of the night removing a tree on top of a car. it happened on newport place northwest near dupont circle. thankfully no one was hurt when the tree came crashing down. montgomery county police say yesterday's metro bus accident in silver spring was likely weather related. shortly after 7 yesterday morning, one bus rear ended another near brunette avenue. 26 people, eight students at montgomery blare high school, were taken to the hospital. no one was serious my hurt. and we're learning more about the driver killed after his bus drove off of a ramp on i-270 in bethesda. two younger thes on board said the driver clearly suffered a medical emergency. the retired police officer

collapsed on the steering wheel just before the crash yesterday afternoon. he says one of the parents, sally curry tried to grab the wheel and steer it on to the interstate but the unconscious driver was on top of it. >> i looked at the bus driver and he was slumped over on the steering wheel. >> he is slumped over? >> he is slumped over like he had a heart attack. we heard bus driver, look out and felt a smash an heard a smash and we were rolling down trees and bush off the hill. >> reporter: maryland state police are waiting for the autopsy results on the autopsy joseph claybaugh. time for the first "living $mart" report of the morning and october has a tough act to follow on wall street. it was the best month for the stock market in 71 years.

the dow was up 8% and for the quarter 11%. on thursday, some investors cashed in their profits making for a down day. the dow fell 47 points to close at 10788. the nasdaq dropped points. the s&p lost three points. the losses came, despite some encouraging news on the economy. claims for unemployment benefits fell last week, and manufacturing in chicago unexpectedly rose last month. later today auto companies released their sales figures. they predict another lackluster monday as worried consumers stay out of car show rooms. regulators are releasing the causes of the dow crash. the report is expected to give detintive second-by-second account of that trading day. they hope it will boost investor confidence in the market.

a major change is in the works for the obama administration. rahm emanual is stepping down to run for mayor of chicago. he is being replaced by senior adviser peter r organization usch. international authorities have been tracking eight germans and two british brothers believed to be plotting an allocate linked terror plot. the suspects are said to be hiding in pakistani tribal region. the obama administration is close to saying what sort of gas mileage it envisions for cars of the future. environmentalists are pushing for at least 60 miles a gallon for new vehicles by 2025. automakers say high standards will drive up costs. before we head to break, here's howard with an update. looking over the rain totals yesterday. some areas a foot plus in

welcome back to 9 news now. the rain has left and it's on its way. replaced by some winds and sunshine. thank you for watching. it is 4:16. howard bernstein is here. before we get to your weather, pink mug here because today is the first of october and the beginning of breast cancer awareness month. we will have a lot to tell you on our blog and everything goening on. >> she's been busy working on a lot of stories for october. >> interesting stories. >> you said the wind scene sun is going to replace it but that won't happen until this afternoon. >> we can wait. >> the drizzle and heavy flooding have left the area. and that's a good thing. we will show you some spotty showers up to northern delaware, philly, southern jersey. you see the heavier rain pulling away from us. across the region, spotty showers, areas of drizzle and i want to show you a couple of things before we get to the

weather map. this is moving from south to north. some of the showers may be enough for you to have the steady wipers on in areas out route 1. from bethesda to dc we are watching flight light showers and that's the case this morning. these spotty showers, areas of drizzle an the wins from the northwest. i want to show you the storm totals. the doppler is unbelievable around the region. this is why we had all of the flooding and still have some flooding out there. in southern calvert county, some doppler estimates upwards of a foot and we have had reports down there also in the foot-plus category. calvert, anne arundel counties, ten, 12 inches, eight, nine inches here. this is a heavy band along the west side of the bay through the northern neck. locally, though, even prince william county, western

charles, six-inch band. southern faulkier five to six inches report and montgomery county we have five to six-inch total. four and change at national and dulles with daily rainfall record. and really did cause saul sorts of problems -- all sorts of problems but the doppler is only showing spotty showers. we will talk about the second of the big storms. round two came in last night with more heavy rain. this morning, yeah, there it goes. very quickly racing up through eastern pennsylvania, new york state. they are getting hammered, philly to new york. it's going to hit atlantic city and new york city area, long island, connecticut is going to get it but the key for us is the plume of tropical moisture. until this upper low passes we will have some showers around and that will be the case off and on this morning, but the afternoon does look far far better. we still have a few flood

warnings out there. the immediate metro doesn't have them but in saint mary's county, stafford county and in to anne arundel county and points northeast of the eastern shore, still have flood warnings. several roads are reported down sow under water. but right now other than an isolated closure the big flash flooding is over. we still have river flooding we will be contending with. and tom sater will join me later and we are putting that together right now. the momslikeme.com bus stop forecast, much better this morning. we have spotty showers and drizzle. upper 50s to the north and west. holding on to 70, 71 in southern maryland. sun is coming up at 7:04. the day at a glance, spotty showers through mid-morning. by noon some sunshine and by 5:00, low 70s with mostly sunny skies. right now we have 63 and mostly cloudy skies, and of course good air quality. winds will be a factor at times, gusting to 30 miles an

hour. clear and chilly tonight. the winds will drop off. look at the temperatures, though, 44 northwest of downtown. northwest winds five to ten by tomorrow morning and saturday the better day of the weekend, sunny and pleasant and highs near 70. winds north northeast at five to ten miles an hour. really a very nice start. here's the winds that we are talking about, gusting to near 30. 28 at national. notice the wind direction. northwest wind feeding behind the system. winds gusting to 25 in leesburg. martinsburg northwest at 18. fredericksburg still gusting to 24. so that will be probably the worst part of the day. 63 in town. upper 50 fund-raise hagerstown, winchester 58. luray is 60. 61 in petersburg, west virginia. grant county good morning to you. pax river 66 and cambridge 72. they had good ten or 11 inches of rain at pax river.

dew point in the 50s. the wind sustained at 19. that's a good breeze this morning as a deep storm continues to pull away. one more look, a little wider now and notice to the west all is nice and quiet. showers in southern virginia will follow, but we can't rule out rain for a while longer but at least we are saying good-bye to the low pressure. at least for now. the problem we will have as we go through the weekend is upper- level winds get in to what we call a trough and that will be with us. and while that storm pulls away, i want you to watch what is coming out of detroit. as a second piece of energy drops in the northwesterly flow. going up to pennsylvania on saturday, could be showers north central and western pennsylvania to pittsburgh. especially as we head in to saturday night. and then by sunday this thing will get close enough to us that we will have some spotty showers across the region, as well. more so in the mountains but a cooler day with temperatures in the 60s. keep that in mind.

get the seven-day forecast, going through the weekend. we get unsettled by the way next week. today windy, early showers, 73. tomorrow a very nice day around 70. and look at the chance of showers on sunday, monday, tuesday, spotty showers. temperatures in the mid-60s for highs. upper 40s to near 50 for a low. wednesday, late in to early thursday. another chance of rain, but thursday early showers and 71. so we have more rain in the forecast. here's angie. we will begin in crystal city. some of the issues have carried over from yesterday near u.s. route 1 at south ball street. all lanes are closed in both directions because of flooding. nebraska now we want to stay -- now we want to stay in virginia southbound past telegraph road. you want to watch for a pothole on the right side. can be dangerous. so be careful.

it is on the cameron run bridge. that's something to keep an eye out for. maryland, 355 and wisconsin avenue we had police activity earlier here at 355 where it meets bradley lane. getting word that a transformer blew out and lights are out. so if you approach a dark intersection treat it as a four- day stop. 95 and the bw parkway overall looking good. but 95 right before nasa goddard is where we have a report of a downed tree on the right side of the roadway. wrap it up with a look at 270, still nice and quiet past 109 making your way to that spur. no incidents or accidents to report. andrea, over to you. >> thank you, angie. executives from johnson and johnson were on the hot seat in washington on thursday. they want to know why the largest drug company did not issue a public recall of some of its drugs last year but as joel brown reports the company

instead had them secretly bought off store shelves. >> reporter: johnson and johnson's chief executive started his testimony with an apology to his customers. >> there's no doubt we let them down. this was not one of our best moments. >> reporter: congress is investigating whether johnson and johnson tried to hide problems with its recall of children's medicines and painkillers last year. in one case, contractors, posing as customers, secretly because up defective packets of motrin in stores across the country. lawmakers question whether a j and j executive was telling the truth when she said she knew nothing of the phantom recall at a hearing in may. >> you are at the top of this group and you knew nothing about it, really? >> i have since learned from looking at documents there was a retrieval going on. i did not know that at the time of my testimony i don't believe. >> i have to tell you this testimony is lacking in credibility. >> reporter: the food and drug

administration admits it knew about the recall but insists its hands were tied. >> the fda had the authority to order a recall to be done in the right way i do not believe these evens would have occurred. >> the fda should have more authority to shut a company down if they are distributing products that could be unsafe to the public. >> johnson and johnson is trying to fix the quality control problems at every plant and the medicines will be safe when they hit the store shelves again soon. joel brown, cbs news, washington. in orliving well -- in other living well news, doctors have reached a breakthrough in the study of leukemia. a combination of standard chemotherapy and plus a drug significantly improves survival rates. half were in remission three years later compared to a less than a quarter of the group getting chemotherapy alone. researchers say pregnant
