delayed 90 minutes this morning. we are dealing with a little bit of shower activity. there we won't need any annoying rubbing noise there. just my -- just my voice. a little shower activity this morning and drizzle. go to live doppler 9000 hd and we have showers, light ones there from forestville through clinton approaching waldorf and la plata. a couple of sprinkles in howard county. just to the northwest of laurel, they are coming down, about to cross route 29. on the weather computer the big area of rain. you can see it moving to the north very, very quickly in to eastern new york. there may be some tornadic weather, too across new england, long island points north on the east side like we had yesterday could have little isolated tornadoes. still showers in southern virginia and those, until that little upper piece of energy passes we have to keep a chance of spotty showers or drizzle the next several hours.

flood warnings continue in stafford, st. mary's and anne arundel counties and points north an east because the flooded waters are high. locally angie will have a couple of road closures here even outside of the flood warning. so be careful and as far as the rain potential. nice to see the bright colors on somebody else instead of us. eastern p.a. through new york state they are going to get the brunt of the rain. we are in the 50s and 60s out there and temperatures will slowly climb. i think i was optimistic for the 66 at 9:00. probably 63, 64. this afternoon, look at the sunshine. breezy and comfortable with the temperature driving home about 72. it is almost 6:02. here's angie. >> thank you, howard. right now i want to tell you about some train alerts we have for those who use the red line with metro. right now we don't have any service south of metro service. the services have been suspended temporarily and vre riders, there's no trains --

there are no trains out of manassas because they are dealing with downed wires and trains on the fredericksburg line are running behind right now. a couple of things to keep in mind. route 29 northbound out this way near university. that's where we are getting word of a downed tree taking away a couple of right lanes. we want to take you to prince georges county, new hampshire avenue and piney branch road. we have flooding taking away lanes for drivers, as well. on the inner loop, no incidents or accidents to report between 95 up to 66. but just south of telegraph road is where we have a big pothole. it is taking away the right lane. stay to the left to safely get by. and finally, we will wrap it up with a fly of the dulles toll road. here we go. making our way past the airport through herndon, reston toward tysons corner, trying to get to the toll plaza to access 66 or the capital beltway. right now smooth staling and green cars are telling us that drivers are moving at speed. that's a quick look at traffic. over to you.

at the top of the hour, here's a look at the stories happening today. the cleanup is just beginning for thousands along the east coast after torrential downpours from the carolinas to maine. a town in north carolina took on a foot of rain in just six hours. that's nearly a quarter of its typical annual rainfall. talking on your cell phone while behind the wheel is now illegal in maryland. starting today drivers must use hands-free devices. if you are caught, you will get stuck with a 4 a dollars fine and that could jump to $100 if you are caught again. one of the worst kept secrets in washington becomes official today. president obama will announce white house chief of staff rahm emanual is stepping down to run for mayor of chicago. the brash illinois native has been one of the president's most trusted and powerful advisers. he. residents living south and east of the district really caught a bad break with this

storm. calvert county was one of the hardest regions hit in maryland. kristin fisher has more from lusby on conditions there. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning. over the past 86 hours or so -- 36 hours or so we have gotten a foot of rain here in calvert county but i want to start with good news. we have had any clouds and thunderstorms the past few days. the worst is over. we shouldn't be getting anymore rain here in calvert county except a small sprinkle or two and in terms of power outages there are significant power outages in the dc area but here in calvert county we have no outages to report. bge says they have restored 200 customers since the storm started. great news there. already, of course, some, some bad news, some cleanup that still needs to be done after this storm and probably one of the most visible places where we need cleanup is here at this home. check this out. you are not going to believe

this. this is a home in lusby and you can see where yesterday, the foundation of this home completely collapsed. i mean this concrete wall cracked when just a huge mudslide almost. it was just aen tore renn of mud and rain that slammed up side the home an see the belongings are soaked inside the base. they have been evacuated. nobody was hurt when this happened but their home has been condemned. really just an amazing sight to show you just how strong the wind and rain and all of this mud can be and was here at this home yesterday. now, i want you to know there are some road closures in the area. some more notable ones bay side road, chesapeake and bay avenue. they are closed in certain points but they should be open at some point later today. andrea? >> all right, kristin. thank you very much. flooding during and after a heavy rain is always a concern

in alexandria. jessica doyle is joining us live from old town along king street where flooding is usually an issue but they will be watching carefully this weekend, right, jessica? >> that's right. we are at the end of king street. you will see behind me we have a barricade and then the potomac and i'm standing in sort of the last remainder of puddles that's here on king street. we are not done yet. i want to give you a shot of what we are looking at yesterday. we took video of that and we will roll that now. this entire area was flooded out. high tide came in around 1:16 yesterday. the potomac rose and jumped the bank and came spilling out, flooding the entire area. there is a barricade telling folks don't park on the street. that is floating in the flooding and we caught up with one boater who has his boat at the old dominion boat club and he had serious concerns. here's what he had to say.

>> getting sandbags. we have flooding in the backyard, already raised up four inches, and that was just this morning. and now we have a couple of inches to go and it's going to come in the house. >> reporter: that actually was a woman who was actually grabbing sandbags. those are still available today. you can get your sand bag at king and lee street. i want to point you to the potomac behind me. i was just down there and looking at what we are looking at today. we are approaching low tide. so you would expect the water levels to be dropping. i will tell you, i have been watching all morning and have been seen any appreciable drop in water levels for the potomac. we are only a foot off of the potomac and it will crest around 1:20, and that's went we could see more flooding today and possibly again tomorrow. andrea, back to you in the studio. >> thank you. our viewers have been busy snapping photos of the storm and we are happy to share some of them on our wusa photo

in the news now, former president carter is in washington for a private meeting after being released from the hospital. he spent two days recovering from a viral infection at a cleveland hospital. the president, whose birthday is today became ill on a flight to cleveland as part of his book tour. the postal regulatory commission has denied think postal service's request to raise the price of a first- class stamp to 46 cents. right now it costs 44 cents for a staff. they have asked for the increase to deal with mounting financial losses. we are not alone in misery. from the carolinas to maine, rainstorms have flooded thousands of bases. the national weather service reports that 21 inches of rain fell in north carolina since last saturday. we were saying earlier that u.s. airways with flights our

saint mary's county, anne arundel county, everybody north and east, no more flood watches either. the water is generally receding except the rivers with zero a couple of crests to talk about. saturday in brunswick and alexandria will be later on saturday that the floodwaters will make their way down. the seneca creek in dawsonville close to flood stage and minor flooding there and at the goose creek, you are going to get to flood stage here. that will happen later today. and then you will start to recede. it will be coming up quickly. our bus stop forecast this morning, mom million bus stop forecast. spotty shower and drizzle. it's cool. 50s and 60s and breezy, as well. winds over 20 miles an hour and the gusts in the upper 60s by noon with sunshine returning. low 70s for the drive home and on the we start to clear out.

an anne arundel may get clipped but it will not exacerbate any flooding. just a nuisance shower pushing through. on the weather computer we are seeing the flooding rains pull away. exiting pennsylvania quickly through the hudson valley and heading to new england. they will be problems the next three to six hours. going to boston today, get in early and you will get ahead of it but they will be dumped on, as well. spotty showers in southern virginia, north carolina. little piece of upper level energy and until that pass we can't rule out showers or drizzle through the morning, but better, much better later this afternoon. 62 in washington. still holding in the 60s also down in southern maryland, tappahannock, fredericksburg 64. upper 50s in cumberland and hagerstown 59. oak land 46 degrees. the cool air is on the way and we will cool off big time on the. today 64 or so by 9:00.

the drive home temperature 72. looks like highs between 70 and 75. winds though will gust close to 30 miles an hour. i will have the weekend forecast coming up at 6:44. right now angie has the traffic. half way through the 6:00 hour and rise and shine, everybody. we take you to prince georges county. we want you to know about new hampshire avenue and piney branch. that's where we have flooding going on. and then something new. an accident here at adelphi road. and a downed tree on route 29 northbound at university. that continues to take away a couple of right lanes. stay left to get by. we are tracking the outer loop and from 95 to georgia avenue no incidents or accidents. but a good amount of volume is building. that delay is clearly on the way. 66 heading eastbound from route 50 to 123, we are also getting heavy out this way. no construction to report at this time. and 395 northbound, looks like that delay is here from duke over to seminary. still okay crossing the 14th

street bridge. andrea. >> thank you, angie. residents living south and east of the district really caught a bad break with the storm. calvert county is one of the hardest regions hit in maryland. kristin fisher has more on the conditions there. howard said no rain to exacerbate the flooding but you have one family that's got more on their plate than that. >> absolutely. but let's take a minute and enjoy the fact it has indeed stopped raining. how nice is this? after 36 hours of solid rain, this county has seen over a foot of rainfall. the cleanup is certainly going to continue here in calvert county, especially for this family. the owners of this home. this is just an unbelievable scene of devastation for this family. check this out. you see the sign here? notice this home has been condemned and i'm going to show you why. let's start by looking just underneath the door. the entrance to the door and you see the crack, the space between the bomb of the door to

the walkway up to it is at least about six inches, maybe a foot. and if you go left, walk with me over here and you will see the big problem. yesterday afternoon the foundation to this home completely collapsed in the middle of all of this rain. the ground that i'm standing on right now, literally kind of just slid in to this home, literally like a small mudslide here and you can see the foundation, the concrete wall foundation literally cracked in half and left this gaping hole underneath this home. this was their basement. you can see some washers and dryers down there, some old laundry, tables. it is completely flooded down there. what's amazing is nobody was injured in this. if somebody had been in that base when that concrete foundation collapsed it could have been a horrible situation. but the good news, no injuries to report. this family has been evacuated by the red cross and they are being set up in a temporary shelter until they can figure out what to do but this goes to show you how dangerous that

kind of rainfall can be especially when you are talking about that much accumulation over such a short period of time. back to you. >> thank you. flooding during and after a heavy rain is always a concern in alexandria. jessica doyle is joining us live from old town where they will be watching things carefully this weekend. >> that's right. i'm here at the my thai restaurant and they have actually erected a bit of a flood wall, a flood barrier here. this many in place also at the starbucks at the corner and let me tell you why. there were concerns overnight about the flood levels rising because of course we get tides in twice a day. high and low tides twice a day and there was a problem, right over there is a river boat called the dandy and not once, not twice but four separate times police had to respond overnight because an alarm was

going off. an alarm on the boat that says the river has gotten too high. they had to respond as a result of that and i will tell you why people are so concerned about flooding. let's look at the video we shot from this area yesterday. this area was completely engulfed in water. high tide came in yesterday afternoon around 1:16 it jumped this bank and spilled out over the area. there is barricade down the street that was actually floating in the water. come back live to me now. i want to tell you the situation here. we will have high tide at 1:18 and 1:20 today and saturday there are concerns with the rainoff we have gotten the last 24 hour the tributary is getting swollen but the potomac will rise and that continues to be a situation here. sandbags are available for residents here. go to lee and king streets. they will be on a flat bed

welcome back to 9 news now. it is 6:42. 62 degrees. no rain falling over the potomac, but this is a shot from old town in alexandria. right up that king street where there is some surface flooding but they are concerned about the week high tide later on today. and what will happen the rest of the weekend. water still has to come downstream. that's going to happen. the flood warnings we have been having a lot of those are gone. a couple of exceptions there. the flood watch is also gone. we are in bert shape than this time yesterday morning. live doppler 9000 hd has some

spotty showers still. one up in the hagerstown area. that is moving to the southeast. very light there. sharpsburg approaching middletown and meyersville as it moves down 40 and route 70 toward frederick and jefferson. and maybe brunswick and.of rocks. it will clip jefferson county west virginia. the other area we have been watching is off to the south and east of washington. you can see it from almost bwi to charles county. heavier showers well to the east. we will zoom in on that and show you seven that park light showers moving through you. 97 to davidsonville and 301. this continues as we head to southern prince georges county, brandywine and northern areas in charles county. waldorf, down route 5. you are seeing light showers and spotty drizzle. that's about it. and that's good news. with the rains leaving we have seen an improvement in our warnings and watches in the flood category. we will go to the computer and see off to the west it is all

kentucky. stafford your flood warning expired a while ago. watch for high water and low- lying water could be running high. charlie in catlett picked up an inch and a half. we know we have had double that in areas to our east. but they are all gone now. as far as river flooding is concerned this is what we are talking about. potomac will not crest until saturday at point of rock and that's a foot or so near flood stage and seneca creek will be around flood stage here later today. it is coming up with one more for you. goose creek out in loudoun county, real near flood stage again lair today. so we will watch the creeks and water and potomac.
