from the first local station with news in high definition, this is 9 news now. a maryland lake overflows sending water in to the streets and in to homes and businesses. well, the sun may be out but the storms that dump more than a foot of rain in some parts of our area have left places underwater. ground zero is in southern maryland. saint mary's lake overflowed sending water in the streets. scott broom is joining us live by skype from great mills, maryland with more information. scott? >> reporter: well, right now at noon, things are starting to get back to normal after this sort of biblical flood that happened last night.

colossal amounts of rain have fallen since the rain started. one location in california that is near here in great mills logged 13 inches of rain and it all finally came to a head at 1:00 in the morning last night here at great mills where we had the second pulse of rainfall coming through, and the saint mary's creek here couldn't handle it. great mills is a place that's flooded in the past and today is no exception. a dozen to 15 homes and businesses were flooded out. they are starting to muck out the situation right now, and in addition to that, there's a trailer park near here called the langley trailer park that was evacuated overnight. fortunately the water didn't make it to the trailer park. that ended up being a precaution but it gives you an idea how difficult the situation here was. the roads have begun to reopen here in saint mary's county but the schools were out and here's some of the reactions from people we talked to as they cleaned up. >> in several minutes it was up

to here. when we realized, you know we should probably get out of here, it was over our knees. and some college kids drown their car right there and we shoved that car. we said you don't realize i but this could be really bad because the water was hitting their car sideways. >> wasn't as high as last night. water came up and in fact, think we had two or three inches in the lower level of our house over there. >> reporter: nobody hurt, nobody injured in all of this, and now it's a matter of cleaning up today. saint mary's county, again the schools are out today. so a significant impact this morning, but the roads are back open as the water recedes, but really it's just unbelievable amounts of rain. pick your word, phenomenal, biblical. this was noah's ark kind of stuff last night and they went through the behaves rain at the beginning of the storm. the second pulse that came through last night is the one

that popped the cork and they are starting to recover now. reporting live in saint mary's county, scott broom, 9 news now. breaking news from receive earn most maryland. sky 9 found a massive sinkhole on gambles road, nine miles south of bwi airport. we are told that a culvert holding up the road failed in the heavy rains. repairs could take a couple of weeks. flooding was also a problem in another part of southern maryland. our kristin fisher continues our coverage from lusby in calvert county. >> reporter: well, this is really the bull's eye for this storm. calvert county got over a foot of rain in the past 36 hours and now the cleanup begins. we've got some road closures, some minor flooding, but i think the worst damage that i have seen is this home in lusby, maryland. walk with me and check this out. yesterday, at the height of the storm, all of the rain water was rushing down this front yard, and you can see the

foundation, the concrete foundation to this home, literally crumbled. it almost looks like there was a mini mudslide. the interior of the family's basement is completely flooded. washing machines, laundry, tables, chairs, mixed in with water and mud. it is really a mess down there. fortunately no one was home when this happened. by as you can see, check out the notice sign here. this home has now been condemned because this front porch, this whole home looks like it is hanging about to fall any second at the very dangerous structure right now. the red cross has come out. they have put up this family at some sort of temporary housing and now the cleanup continues for this family and others in the calvert county area that were affected by this storm. if there is any good news in all of this, it is that the rain, for now, is over and there are no more power outages to report in calvert county. in lusby, kristin fisher, 9 news now. >> thank you, kristin.

the forms are also problems in virginia because some commuters found themselves looking for a new way to get to work this morning. vre had to cancel all service on the manassas line trains. and the rail service is apologizing for the short notice. low hanging power lines in the alexandria area were blocking the tracks. >> is this going to be really inconvenient for you? >> yeah. because the traffic takes more than one hour and 30 minutes to drive down to dc. >> reporter: how long would this take you on the line? >> you mean if i take the vre, only 30 minutes. >> reporter: virginia dominion power says it has fixed the leaning pole that caused the power lines to sag, but vre says the manassas line service is cancelled for this afternoon. riders with a valid vre ticket can ride metro from noon until

8 p.m. how much rain did we get? howard is here with some of the answers. >> tons is one word, but we will get the numbers in a moment. thankfully we are watching the storm. it is gone now and bugging new england with heavy rains and the sunshine is building in behind it. we have to thank james who sent us a bunch of pictures. this is from hollywood. this is the computer doctor's office if you know where that is. this is a little bridge over a creek or something. i'm trying to figure it out but water is up to the railings on that several feet deep and you saw scott broom, widespread flooding in saint mary's county. no wonder they were unable to host classes today at the schools. national and dulles had 4 1/2, 4/3/4 inches. california a few of them. smithburg, near the pennsylvania border. had a four-inch total. normally that is an amazing

rain total. normally. this one though is one of the lighter ones. prince georges eight inches. middletown virginia 3 1/2. catlett had 4 1/2. they welcomed that and in new land, the northern neck 7. some parts of the northern neck had nine to ten inches. thankfully we don't have too much rain in the extended forecast. i will tell you about the weekend details in about 15. >> we will get back to howard. thank you. the storms caused plenty of problems for our north. we'd like for you to look at this video from darby, pennsylvania just outside of philadelphia. the town creek flooded this morning leaving cars and buildings under several feet of water. 50 to 60 people were evacuated, but no one was injured. the police chief says flooding hasn't been this bad since hurricane floyd in ' 99. and traveling on new jersey's famed highways was height quiet a challenge this morning. this is newark near the airport where several major roads come

together. drivers that tried to drive through the flooded road quickly learned it was impossible. some people had no choice but to push their cars out of the way. for more on the storm, you can see a slide show of photos submitted by residents across the region. just go to wusa9.com, and you can also find our interactive radar and updated forecast from howard and topper throughout the day. disturbing new details following a deadly fire in the district. investigators are now saying someone used a mattress to try to block people from getting out of a burning building. one person died in the wednesday morning fire after jumping out of the eight-story building on 16th street. investigators confirmed they are talking to several people of interest. >> we have what we would call suspects or people of interest that were following through

very carefully. we've begun to eliminate every single accidental cause. >> reporter: about 100 residents have returned to their apartments. however, the red cross is still hoping the displaced families, who lived on the fifth floor where that fire started and ten people remain hospitalized. we are learning more about the driver killed after his bus ran off of the ramp on i-270 in bethesda. two youngsters on board say the driver clearly suffered some kind of medical emergency many. riley says 66-year-old joseph claybaugh collapsed on to the steering wheel just before the crash. he says one of the parents, sally curry, actually tried to grab the wheel and steer it back on the interstate but the unconscious driver was right on top of it. >> i looked over to the bus driver and he all of a sudden slumped over the steering

wheel. >> reporter: the slumped over. >> he up slumped over like he was -- [ inaudible ] like a heart attack. and we had a bus driver look out and then felt a smash and heard a smash and then we were just rolling down the trees and bush off the hill. >> reporter: maryland state police are still waiting for the results of an autopsy. today is the first day that maryland drivers are banned from using a hand-held phone behind the wheel. if you are caught talking on a hand-held phone, you could face a $40 fine for the first offense and a $100 fine for each offense after that. the violation is considered a secondary offense. so that means, you can only be pulled over if you commit another offense as well, such as running a red light. bin laden has harsh words

white house chief of staff to run for mayor in his hometown of chicago. >> we are all very excited for rahm as he takes on a new challenge, for which he is extraordinarily well qualified. >> reporter: his replacement, at least for now is pete rausch who was the chief of senate in president obama's senate office. he plans to pick a permanent chief of staff after the election and that makes the timing of the transition so surprising. emmanuel acted as president obama's political pointman, twisting arms and sometimes butting heads to advance the president's agenda. the white house will need that kind of clout over the next four weeks as the democrats struggle to retain control of congress in the midterm election. the chief of staff is at the center of the decision the administration makes, working behind the scenes as gate keeper and adviser. emmanuel has been criticized for wielding too much power but andrew card says that is no accident. >> i think the chief of staff

only does the job the way the president wants it done. >> reporter: personnel changes are not unusual midway through an administration, but the president -- but for the president the question is how well the administration will do, no the man called his right arm. joel brown, cbs news, the white house. osama bin laden is criticizing muslim countries for spending for money on armies than citizens. he made the comments on a newly released audio tape. bin laden called for the creation of a relief body to aid muslims harmed in national disasters and wars. al-qaeda recently criticized pakistan for failing to help citizens following devastating floods that left eight million people homeless. tens of thousands of people are expected on the national mall this weekend. we will tell you why when we come back and howard will have the weekend forecast. >> that's right, jc. it has turned gorgeous out here. the question is how long will it stay this way? we are talking about friday

the 70-degree mark. sun is up at 7:05. few spotty showers this morning. the rains are pulling out of new jersey and to our west. look at all of this sunshine. holding on to clouds in garrett county and parts of the pennsylvania and temperatures there are chilly. we are looking at winds gusting 31 at national. manassas 30. a lot of 20 to 25-mile an hour gusts in the shenandoah valley and off to the south, winds gusting 25 to 30 and this will be now the bigger problem for the week. -- for the day, i moon. hopefully we don't lose anymore trees. we had 10 to 15-inch totals in faint mary's county. and with five or so inches around here it is possible that something could give in the soft soil. 68 manassas, 66 gaithersburg. mid-60s martinburgs to winchester. in oakland and garrett county, 48 cloudy chilly degrees. fredericksburg and orange at 70. national is 70. dew anyone the 50s. humidity 53% and the winds are

a nice dry cool direction. northwest sustained at 16. looking across the country, pretty quiet. a few showers southwest to the northern plains. it is what is going on in new england. behind it the cool crisp air is filtering in and we will have a nice october-like weekend and we will watch two things quickly. this disturbance coming from the northwest and another low trying to form on the coast but if it works out they cancel each other out so sunday may not be that bad looks like showers will be light rain by monday. topper will have an update at 5:00. better chance of showers on monday and staying unsettled on tuesday and wednesday. more 9
