in northern virginia. and where will the crook or crooks strike next? our own brittany morehouse is live with a warning police want everybody to pay attention to. brittany. >> reporter: lock your doors. that is the bottom line warning here. three more people early morning hours here struck by this criminal. he has hit everywhere. we're miles away from this morning's crime because it could happen in any neighborhood here. every county has been hit and every day of the week there is no common thread, they say, except for unlocked doors. >> he's as cool as a cucumber. >> reporter: stealing just a stone's throw away from where you sleep. >> very smooth. doesn't seem to get disturbed by anything. >> reporter: he has been alluding police since june, the kind of burglar who will walk straight up your sidewalk, even if the lights are on, even if you're home and help himself to your front door.

>> it's kind of scary stuff. >> reporter: 87 times the prowler stuck. 57 of those home burglaries. >> meaning 54 people were inside their house sleeping with the doors unlocked. i can't imagine why you would do that. you should always lock your door. >> reporter: but apparently not everyone does. >> i do know of some people who don't even have a key for their front door. >> reporter: sharon runs a community called my neighbor's network. she has been receiving e-mails. >> at one time i had tried the next door neighbor's house, the alarm went often, and they actually had a security system that started taping. they got him on tape. even with the alarm going off, he cooley walked across the yard. >> reporter: if he's that brave, are people getting the message? we visit many neighborhoods tonight knocking on doors checking in with you. how are you. i'm brittany morehouse. i'm with 9news now. and asking the bottom line question. >> do you guys have your doors

locked right now? >> actually no. >> this may not be because i'm waiting for my son to get home. >> reporter: did you have your door locked? >> yes. we do it out of habit. >> reporter: you do. >> yes. >> reporter: and that's a good habit to have. police say everyone should start adopting it right now. now, you heard the woman talk about there being video. well, police cannot confirm that and they say they do not want to compromise their investigation. but we do know they're throwing all kinds of resources at proactively looking for this person every night of the week. reporting live in fairfax county, brittany morehouse, 9news now. >> thank you, brittany. new at 11:00, there has been a report of a possible measles exposure at reagan national airport. passengers who were in terminal c on september 23rd could have been exposed. measles is a highly contagious illness that is spread through coughing and sneezing.

the exposure was possible on september 23rd in termal c. people are drying out after being in the rain bulls eye for the last two days. parts got more than 13 inches of rain, turning streets into river. at a nearby trailer park, it trashd cars and ruined the houses. fire officials have blocked the road to the park after calling for a voluntary evacuation on wednesday. when the waters receded, they reopened and people came back but more rain forced them out again. the water is getting high on the potomac river as well. high enough that the maryland natural resources police are urging people not to do this without a professional guide. the potomac is slated to crest at about five feet tomorrow night at point of rocks. that is well below flood stage but high enough to knock loose logs and other debris. it could be dangerous. they expect the water levels will go down by monday. tonight investigators believe someone tried to create a firy death trap inside a

columbia heights apartment building. one man did diaz he tried to escape that fire -- did die as he tried to escape the fire. he tried to reach a tree as he jumped and he missed and it killed him. they are interviewing several people of interest. the fire started in a common area on the fifth floor where firefighters say furniture had blocked the exit. >> there was a mattress that we found in the hallway that was pretty well burned out. and we're wondering whether that was the source of ignition. >> ten other people were hurt in the fire, including a 2-year-old. they are all still in the hospital tonight. well, it seems arlington county's plan to opt out of a new system to allow police all over the country to check on people's immigration status might be a bit harder than expected. the program secure communities allows immigrations and customs enforcement to search fingerprints and identify people

in this country illegally. but we learned that local jurisdictions may only be able to oment out of a portion of that -- opt out of a portion of that program. for example, arlington does not get information from ice but fbi, homeland security and immigration may still get information from arlington. >> this has been imposed. if there is one, how exactly is the process and let's discuss it. >> now, according to ice, fingerprints of people arrested would be searched, not that of the victims calling in crimes. the entire country is scheduled to be linked into the program by 2013. another rally is set to take place on the national mall this weekend. the one group working together is calling for quality education and justice. it's scheduled to start at noon tomorrow at the lincoln memorial. radio talk show host and al sharpton are among those scheduled to speak. for some perspective on this, we turned to derek mcginty and let's be real. >> well, anita, they say 100,000

mental patients syphilous 60 years ago by having infected prostitutes visit them. they wanted to test penicillin. the test subject never knew and today president obama and other top officials apologized. this outrageous experiments was uncovered by a medical historian looking into other research in an experiment that began in the 1930s tracking 600 black men in alabama that had syphilous. nobody ever offered them treatment just to see how the disease would progress. it turns out the same u.s. doctor launched the study in guatemala. such research turns our stomachs these days, but it's important to remember that medicine has made ethical strides as well as scientific ones other the year. the nih director says back then there were actually 40 deliberate infection studies going on in the united states and no regulations to stop them. obviously a very different story today. >> wow. well, tonight a man is behind bars after police used a forklift to catch him. now, this all went down in

charlottesville virginia, today. he tried to run away from his patrol officers and he tried to hide at a lawn and garden center but he didn't get far. they had that forklift police used to get him down. he was up on one of the shelves. and across the state line in baltimore county, investigators trying to figure out what started a major fire at a distillery. this fire was so intense it actually caused part of the building to just collapse. luckily nobody hurt. finally investigators say, though, it sure does seem suspicious. talk about a real survivor. imagine surviving six days of triple digit temperatures with no food or water in a national park. that is what 64-year-old ed rosenfeld did. >> he had a space blanket that he used on his checking poles, his walking poles. he put that up on an area with rocks and that provided shade for him.
