intelligence agencies have picked up information. they have picked up chatter which was shared with the pakistani site and the pakistani site is following up with the needs given to pakistan. >> reporter: they believe osama bin laden may be behind the plot. this week intelligence agencies will review audiotapes recently released by bin laden to see if they contain coded messages. a 31-year-old man died in a shotting on thursday. officers investigating reports of shots fired found william joseph in the 200 block of madison street with a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. he later died at the hospital. police have no suspects in the case. a silver spring man is dead after a hooting in washington. it happened in the 600 block overhair saturday street. -- on harvard street. one of the victims died at the hop an the second man was

treated and released. police are searching for a gunman who shot an officer. this happened this morning. the officer was not injured. authorities do not have a description of the suspect but believe the could be driving a green jeep cherokee. the university of maryland is taking more steps to stop a rash of robberies near and now on campus. the latest happened early yesterday near anne arundel hall. the student victim says he was tackled from behind and forced to give up his cell phone and wallet. there have been eight robberies since midsummer and all 0 the victims have been maryland students. >> the middle of campus that shouldn't happen. so i think we are going to be meeting with the administration and talking about what we can do to kind of calm this stuff down. >> reporter: prince georges county police have arrested two men in connection with one of the robbery cases.

the school is providing late- night police escorts on campus for those students that request it and more security cameras are being installed between the metro and campus. today habitat for humanity kicks off a week-long effort to build and rehabilitation dozens of homes in the country and habitat founder former u.s. president jimmy carter will be apt the dc location. kristin fisher is joining us in that site live with a preview. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning, andrea. this week about 8,000 0 volunteers with habitat for humanity will be building or renovating 86 homes in dc, baltimore, annapolis and three other cities across the country. now, 12 of those homes are located right here in northeast dc ivy city neighborhood. and i will step out of the way and you can see the work site behind me where those white tents are. construction is going to start at 8 a.m. but the main event won't start

until 10:00 and that's when president and mrs. carter will be speaking with habitat for humanity ceo. now, this will be either president carter's first public appearance or certainly one of his first public appearances since he was admitted to the hospital last week. clearly he is doing much, much better. this is also going to be the 27th year for this carter work project in washington. this is a big pet project of his and he has made it clear he did not want to miss this event. and he will be here at 10:00 this morning. now, excuse me, just tripped over my own two feet there. of course, you can see it is still raining. we haven't gotten rid that yet but these volunteers are used to working in the rain and say they will begin to build and renovate homes at 8 a.m. no matter what. so hopefully this rain won't

hundreds of people held a candle light vigil at rutgers university for tyler clemente. he killed himself after fellow students allegedly streamed video of him on the web having a sexual encouldn'ter with another man. some california residents got a shock when a refueling hold fell off of a plane flying over their homes.

the hose broke several roof tiles and dangled from a vent. luckily no one was hurt. firefighters in green bay, wisconsin are calling a 12-year- old girl a hero. she's the oldest of seven and the kids had been alone a few minutes when the fire broke out. the girl got all of her brothers and sisters out of the home safely. a local dmv office will soon be offering an important medical service. that story is coming up. plus, despite the rain here last week, we are recovering faster than parts of north carolina. it is 5:11. here's howard with the latest. >> more rain this morning. i will let you know if it will lead to this monday afternoon, as well. 9 news now will return after this.

emergency management officials in north carolina say much of the city of wind soar will be under water several more days. this is the second so-called 500 year flood to hit there in 11 years. hurricane floyd caused similar devastation in 1999. welcome back to 9 news now. i'm here with howard bernstein. the problem with the flooding like that just sitting there, that is what was really destructive about hurricane katrina, the water.

the family and medical counseling service is expecting 15% of customers to take part in the pilot program. fire prevention week is underway. to call attention to fire safety, the loudoun county fire rescue system held an open house at the ashburn volunteer fire department. those who showed up had a chance to check out the equipment, get safety tips and listen how fast a house fire can spread. firefighters intentionally set two fires to make their point about the need for residential sprinkler systems. it was a bit shaky but a win nonetheless. coming up in sports the redskins react to their win over the division rival eagles. let's see who's celebrating a birthday today -- lisa, your family thinks you might have roaster phobia.

the man in the middle, justice kennedy. >> reporter: this marks the first time there are three female justices on the supreme court. the court will likely add another 20 to 30 cases to the current workload of 58 before the term wraps up next june. one of the cases they will hear on wednesday concerns the west borough baptist church. the father of a maryland marine matthew snyder is suing the church over what he calls the exploitation of his son's funeral. members of this kansas congregation have been saying that u.s. combat deaths are a as a result of the country's tolerance of homosexuality. the burial of lieutenant looney. yesterday, a memorial service was held for the 29-year-old navy seal at dematha catholic high school. looney was killed last month in a helicopter crash in afghanistan. 1100 people turned out to honor

volunteers just started to arrive at this work site. you can see the white tent behind me in this northeast dc neighborhood. over the next week, a thousand habitat for humanity volunteers will be building or renovating 86 homes in dc, baltimore, annapolis and three other cities across the country. 12 of those homes are located here in northeast washington. and construction will be taking place all day, every day this week and it all starts this morning at 8:00. now, the big headline event is going to be taking place at 10:00 this morning, and the headliner is of course, former president carter. this project is his baby. this is the 27th year for the carter work project in washington. and, you know, keep in mind this is going to be president carter's first public appearance since he was admitted to the hospital last week for that nasty stomach virus.

examiner. it is time for another "living $mart" report. jessica doyle is back with a look at the local job market. >> that's right. given the overall economy that we have been experiencing our job market is looking pretty good. the washington area posted one of the strongest employment gains in the last year in the country. the bureau of labor statistics says our area is among 35 metro areas that are seeing a rebounding economy. here's the numbers for you. the washington market added 24,100 jobs to the overall economy between august of 2009 and august of 2010. compare that to job losses of 79,300 jobs in the same period from 2008 to 2009. in maryland, congressman elijah cummings is calling on the governor an the attorney general to impose a 6 a-demurer -- 60 day moratorium on foreclosures. there are reports suggesting that lenders acted fraudulently to begin foreclosures against

pakistani police are blames terrorists for the attack. authorities temporarily closed the border crossings to protest the alternate helicopter attack which killed three pakistani troops. here's a strange side effect from the flooding in north carolina. it is a place where the buffalo can roam free. they were let loose from a farm before the storm so they wouldn't be trapped in the water. authorities say they will let the buffalo roam until the water subsides. rahm emmanuel is officially running for mayor of the windy city. the announced his candacecy on- line on his new website, chicago for rahm.com. he left for chicago on friday

welcome back to 9 news now. all the rain we have had has not been enough to keep the u.s. department of agriculture from declaring a drought disaster in loudoun county. it is one of seven virginia counties dovered by the declaration. it means farmers and ranchers can apply for low-interest emergency loans to help to cover the losses. we will have to see if it rises again with the latest round of rain, but maryland natural resources police are expecting water levels in the potomac to start to drop today. while the runoff from smaller tributaries did not send the

winners get to spend a month in china, working closely with these endangered animals. the contest attracted 68,000 entries from 52 countries. the payoff for the contest is to help preverve the wild panda and publicize its plight but these pandas live a life of relative luxury. they eat bamboo ten hours a day and sleep for an additional 12. caring for the pandas is the job of a dozen contest finalists at the panda reserve. they are vying for six spots. learning to make panda protein pies and showering the objects of their affection. >> amazing. dreams can come true, kids. they can. >> reporter: the only american contender ashley robertson has loved pandas since she was a little girl in alabama. >> when i came across this contest, i thought oh my gosh, gone opportunity. right here in my hands. >> reporter: the finalists have
