s how they can do it. this full-time fashionista... is really a maxxinista! t.j.maxx. check us out on facebook for a chance to win a 500 dollar shopping spree! thanks for joining us. i'm jc hayward. a dozen families are looking for a place to live today following a fire in prince georges county. the flames broke out this morning in a garden apartment- style building in the 2400 block of corning avenue in fort washington. kristin fisher has the latest information. >> i was in the bathtub and jumped out of the tub somebody was banging on the door and i saw smoke coming down the steps. >> reporter: dirk myth stands and watches as more than 60 firefighters work to put out the fire that has destroyed his home at the rose kroft apartments. >> everything i own is in the

house. i just moved in hoar 812 -- here 12 days ago and everything, i.d.s, money, all of my clothes, all my money. i just got my social security check. that's been burned up. >> reporter: the fire started in the top floor apartment but it quickly spread to other units. in total four units were destroyed, and now 11 families are not allowed to return home, including dirk. >> you have renters ' insurance. >> no. i didn't even think about that. i was just so glad to get out here. >> reporter: firefighters are trying to figure out what caused the fire but neighbors say they saw it start from an air conditioning closet on the top floor apartment balcony. but for now, dirk, who lives one floor below is blaming the fire department glen fire department was very late getting here, maybe 25 minutes. because it was a small flame at the top and as you can see the

building looks like it burned down. >> dispatched 8:39 this morning and the first on the scene at 8:45 excellent response time. >> kristin fisher, 9 news now. an autopsy will be conducted on the body of a woman found in laurel, maryland. firefighters discovered think woman in a home yesterday when a fire occurred on brooklyn bridge road. the body was discovered in the basement. the woman's name has not been released. we have an update on a man who was found injured at the huntington metro stop. police say the 32-year-old victim was shot. he was found in the parking lot last night and taken to a local hospital. he is expected to survive. detectives have been unable to interview the man because of his medical condition. sentencing was handed down this morning for the man behind the botched car bombing in

times square. he will spend the rest of his life in prison after pleading guilty. the pakistani native told investigators he wanted to kill at least 40 people in the may blast and he intended to set off another explosion two weeks later after the bomb fizzled. he was arrested two days later. a u.s. missile strike in pakistan may have been aimed at militants behind a reported terror plot in europe. charlie d'agata reports intelligence agents believe the suspects ' heinz the plan are british and german. -- behind the plan are british and german. >> they are hunting for terrorists planning attacks against europe. pakistani intelligence agents say a suspected u.s. drone strike killed a group of german militants on monday. u.s. authorities believe german and british nationals are at the heart of the terror plan, but it's unclear if those killed in the air strike are connected to the plot. in france, police are also

cracking down on suspected islamic extremists. officers arrested 12 people accused of recruiting fighters for afghanistan. so far, investigators are not tying them to the wider terror plot. >> we know it is underway and been directed by al-qaeda but we don't known when it may be excute or who will perpetrate it. >> reporter: british authorities are stepping up the security here at buckingham palace and tourist sites and the same story across much of europe. heavily-armed high-profile security teams are standing gashed at airports and travel hubs in major european cities. u.s. intelligence officials believe osama bin laden himself has given the go ahead to i hit those heavily crowded areas with assaults. styled on the 2008 mumbai massacre. security chiefs fear radical muslim communities in germany, linked to the 9/11 attack have produced 100 trained militants who are now ready to strike.

for the family of a family of a navy seal burying their son at arlington national cemetery. three protesters from the radical west borough baptist church demonstrated outside of the service for brendan looney. they were met by members of a motorcycle club. >> they are protesting here and they don't belong here. this is a place for the family to mourn the loss of their son. >> if a widow came to you and said, please, don't do this. >> we would say, please obey god before it's too late. the soldiers are dying for your sins. >> reporter: the father of a maryland soldier killed in the line of duty is suing west borough baptist church. the supreme court is expected to hear arguments in that case tomorrow. resident of a southern maryland community may soon be receiving a buyout from the government. dramatic video shows why. parts of the calvert cliffs neighborhood are falling in to the chesapeake bay.

one homeowner only has six feet left in his backyard. on saturday they declared his back deck unsafe. >> then offered to the homeowners to purchase their property or buy easements on their property and either relocate the home to a different lot that isn't right on the cliffs, or perhaps move it further back. about 90 residents have been begging for solutions to their problem for years but an endangered species, a beetle has complicated any proposal to stabilize the properties. an autopsy has revealed the driver of that charter bus that crashed in bethesda last week suffered a deadly heart attack behind the wheel. the driver died and several passengers were injured. the crash along an i-270 ramp blocked traffic for hours.

the bus was taking children and adults back to pennsylvania after a day of sightseeing in washington, d.c. maryland governor martin o'malley and congressman elijah cummings are calling for a 60- day moratorium on home foreclosures. bank of america and other lenders have already taken the action in two dozen states. the move came after they found numerous problems with the foreclosure paperwork. and there could be federal and state investigates. >> the fallout could be significant if the court system takes a hard line and views this as broader problems of mortgage servicing and delays the foreclosure process significantly. it means house prices will be weaker for longer and so will our economy. >> reporter: it's unclear how many homeowners will be affected by the foreclosure freeze. members of the dc council want two statues of the u.s. capitol just like the other 50

states have. a letter is being drafted at the wilson building formalizing the request. the city has already created the two statues it would place on the capitol. one is 0 of abolitionist frederick douglas and the other of pierre l'enfant, the architect of the original plans for washington. it appears republicans have more passion about this election than democrats. a new poll from gallup says 50% of registered republicans are very enthusiastic about voting next month. while 33% of democrats feel that way, along with 29% of independents. that passion may be influencing the senate race in west virginia. what looked like an easy win for democrats is now turning in to a tight race. the latest survey shows republican john reese leading democratic governor joe 48 to 46%. 4% run decided.

a new survey says when it comes to millionaires, maryland is number two in the nation. based on people with seven figures of liquid assets per capita, maryland is at 6.79%. that's only second to hawaii. virginia is in seventh place

with 5.94% and dc ranks tenth with 5.53%. a white house summit on community college education is about to get underway. president obama is enlisting the aid of career teacher jill biden. she's expected to give her enthusiastic endorsement to community colleges during the first of its kind event. president obama has already announced a new public/private partnership linking major corporations with community colleges to improve job training. we now have an update on that corruption sparred local government in california. the lawmakers were scheduled to hold a meeting last night since eight current and former city officials were charged with looting. however, that didn't happen. two called in sick. a third is still in jail and the fourth abruptly resigned.

south and east. down south a pretty nice day. sane mary's county, parts of virginia. the sun is out and shining brightly. get you going with a look at the rest of the afternoon with the day at a glance. low 60s at 3:00. upper 50s at 6:00. some sunny breaksful. more sun south and in the 50s by 9:00 p.m. winds north to northwest at ten to 1 a. we have had gusts at 20 to 2 a miles an hour. so a breezy afternoon. partly to mostly cloudy. lows in the 40s. south out west some showers. west winds at 5:00 and in garrett county a couple of wet flow flakes in higher elevations would not surprise me. isolated mainly afternoon showers. best chances will be north and west of washington with highs in the low 60s. upper montgomery, frederick, loudoun county, out to winchester and hagerstown a better chance than down to the

south. light today. look at. this down south. you will notice the sunshine with this clouds trying to break up in southern prince georges county. northern neck is seeing a good deal of sunshine, as well. in charles county, down 95. and then we have the cloudiness in on the northern intersections and scattered in northern virginia. with that we also have wind. gusting to 24 at leesburg. 23 at national. a breezy afternoon out of the northwest and this time of the year that is a cool, cool breeze for us. temperatures right now are in the 50s to low 60s. national's winds are gusting to 24 out of the northwest. what we are looking at nationally, we have an area of low pressure in the southwest and one in the northeast. this one actually could bring severe weather to parts of arizona but in between the two storms, hardly anything is going on. once we shake this guy and you will notice not much is moving quickly. once we shake this we will be in good weather the next few days. heavier showers ontario, coming to ohio and west virginia. with the upper storm sitting

there we still have a threat as we go to tonight and tomorrow for more showers especially northern suburbs. down south we have the sunshine. low pressure near new york at the surface, but the upper low is back here. this will retate to the east an the northeast. so that tomorrow stopping this at 1:00 in the morning. you will notice the showers getting close to the state line with virginia and west virginia. going to cumberland or hagerstown watch out, you will have showers by tomorrow morning. still in good shape dc south and east but north and west, po tenably to frederick tomorrow morning we could have some showers an in the afternoon we will watch northern areas more so than southern areas if oar couple of showers. tomorrow in to thursday, we will get this thing out of here. so that we turn much better for thursday, friday, saturday, sunday and monday, as well. high temperatures today, will get up to 68. if we can push it here in washington, maybe 61, 62. near 60 at andrews and annapolis and easton 60. north and west more clouds and staying in in the 50s from

my dad is the supervisor of a train station and my mom's a teacher. my dad's an auto technician. my mom's a receptionist. i'm not sure i would have been able to afford college without the tuition freeze. while tuition in other states is rising out of reach...
