the hospital. the shoplifter got away. there is a description. she is an african american female of mid height with mid length dark hair. she was wearing a red shiny down jacket and light colored tight pants and light colored shoes. she was also carrying shopping bags. >> now it seems though the chemical has dispated in the air and it does seem to be that everything is back to normal inside. reporting live, i'm lindsay. 9news now. >> so many folks seem to be affected by one person spraying a small canister. did this get into the ventilation system? >> reporter: they were worried about it getting into the ventilation system and talks about evacuating the entire mall. but what they did is had people get away from the area where it was sprayed. they waited to see if it might dispate and they said that's exactly what happened and they were fortunate that it didn't go throughout the entire mall system. >> lindsay, thank you for that. the hiv rate in the district is three times of what

it is normally considered epidemic status. now there's a new effort and it's underway at the dmv. delia is live. how many people were tested there today? >> believe it or not, they were here since this morning and 100 people got tested. not only are these tests free, you can get some money out of the deal. all in less time than it takes to watch your favorite tv show. while you're standing in line, take an hiv test while you wait. the yearlong program is a win/win. not only is the test free -- >> you get paid for getting tested. >> participates get money orders of up to $15 to help cover their dmv service. >> they inform you about preventing getting hiv and ask you questions like, what do you do in order to protect yourself? give out condoms. >> you chose not to take the test? >> why? >> because i don't have aids. i know i don't have aids.

maryland. stewart isaac's black lexus was found two weeks ago. so far, though, repeated ground and air searches turned up no sign of him. authorities say isaac was on a cross country trip. it took a connecticut jury just five hours to deliver a guilty verdict in a deadly home invasion case. steven hayes was convicted today of raping and murdering a mother and her two daughters in july of 2007. prosecutors say hayes and another patrolled burglar forced jennifer petit to go to the bank and withdraw money. when she returned, she and her two daughters were tortured and the house set on fire. the father was left for dead after being beaten with a baseball bat. >> there is some relief, but my family is still gone. it doesn't bring them back. it doesn't bring back the home

that we had, but certainly guilty verdict is a much better sense of relief than a verdict of not guilty. >> jury will decide if hayes should get the death penalty. his codefendant goes on trial next year. the times square bomber will spend the rest of his life behind bars and as randall reports, a federal judge today delivered faisal shahzad the mandatory life sentence. >> faisal shahzad smirked. the 31-year-old called himself a muslim soldier and felt no remorse for his failed may 1 bombing attempt in times square. he said, quote, i'm happy with the deal that god has given me. the pakistani born shahzad told the court we are proud terrorists and we will keep on terrorizing you. >> we are going to range an attack inside america. >> shahzad became a u.s. citizen last year.

he received explosives training and says the taliban gave him money to carry out a terror attack in times square. [ explosion ] prosecutors made a tape to demonstrate what would have happened if shahzad's bomb would have gone off. shahzad told investigators he hoped to kill 40 people here in times square and was planning another attack two weeks later. the judge said shahzad's sentence should be a warning to anyone who tries to follow in his footsteps. he should spend his time behind bars thinking carefully about whether the koran advocates killing lots of people. randall, cbs news, new york. now shahzad also told that judge if he was given 1,000 lives, he would sacrifice them all for the life of ala. the u.s. military is taking aim at terrorists suspected of planning terrorist attacks against europe. intelligence officials say a u.s. missile strike killed a group of german militants

looking for a place to live following this apartment fire in prince georges county. the flames broke out this morning in a garden style apartment building in the 2400 block of corning avenue in fort washington. kristen fisher has the latest. >> i was in the bathtub and i jumped out of the tub and somebody was banging on the door and i saw smoke coming down the steps. >> dirk smith stands and watches as more than 60 firefighters work to put out the two alarm fire that destroyed his home. >> everything i own is in the house. i just moved in here 12 days ago and everything, id's, money, all my clothes, all my money. i just got my social security check. that's been burned up. >> now this fire started in this top floor apartment, but it quickly spread to other units. in total, four units were destroyed, seven others sustained smoke or water damage and that means that now 11

up for the first time in 39 years. school's chancellor talked about the gains at powell elementary. that's one of the schools with the dramatic increase. >> more than a 30% increase in student enrollment in just one year. we have schools like that across the city that have seen double digit enrollment increases in just one year's time. >> the increases in enrollment come after nearly four decades of declines. tomorrow is walk to school day. organizers say the percentage of students walking or biking to school in the united states has actually dropped over the years. 41% in 1969 and 2001 just 13% were walking or biking. obesity, as we all know, is on the rise. in addition to being healthier, walk to school day is also being promoted as a way to help the environment. all right, walking to driving, let's get a check on the evening rush hour on a

z drought conditions are fueling wild fires down in hawaii. officials are worried the fires there could destroy the state's natural eco system and cause devastating long-term environmental damage. 50-acres of brush burned on the aisle and the residents watched as firefighters battle the blaze trying to keep their
