it's time for fios. call the verizon center for customers with disabilities at 800-974-6006 tty/v visit verizon.com/getfios. from the first local station with news in high definition, this is 9news now. good evening tonight in your only local news at 7:00. chemical spray get away. a shoplifter takes drastic measures to elude the cops at a local mall and shoppers pay the price. tests while you wait. come in for the driver's license and hopefully leave with some peace of mind. and left for dead. police are looking for a suspect after a man was found shot in the stomach right near the subway. >> i'm armando trull at the huntington metro station where fairfax county police are trying to determine who shot a man in the stomach here last night. >> a woman called us because she was going to the huntington metro to meet a family member.

when that individual did not show up when he was supposed to, she called us with concern. we located a 32-year-old man suffering from a gun shot wound. >> where was this man? >> he was in the lower lot near huntington avenue. there were no reports of any shots heard in the metro station. there were other citizens and residents in the parking lot when police arrived. and so it was a confused scene. >> detectives interviewed the victim this afternoon at the hospital where he is recovering from a nonlife threatening shot to the stomach. so far, no official word on motive or suspect. >> i'm delia outside of the penn branch dmv in southeast washington where folks are getting a free hiv test. >> while you're standing in line at the dmv, take an hiv test while you wait. >> i want to know my status. >> yearlong program is a win/win. not only is the test free. >> you get paid for getting

tested. >> participates get money orders of up to $15 to help cover their dmv service. >> they inform you about how to prevent getting hiv. they ask you questions like, what do you do in order to protect yourself? they gave out condoms. >> i am hiv negative, thank you very much. >> it was a positive outcome for me and hope it will be for those who take the hiv testing as well. >> i'm lindsey in boston. five people were sent to the hospital. a woman was shoplifting and mace or pepper spray to get away. [ sirens ] >> police say it was just after noon when a store manager spotted a shoplifter. she was stealing shoes from a shoe store. crystal with arlington county police say the manager chased the woman into the main area. that is when the shoplifter sprayed a chemical irritant. >> it burned the eyes of the main person she sprayed it

into. >> a portion of the mall was closed off. customers were given oxygen. >> i saw people who were pulsing and people covering their faces like this. >> five people were taken to the hospital. the shoplifter got away. >> and as you can see from that video, plenty of ambulances responded to the boston mall when the call went out, but an investigation by a local blogger finds that may not always be the case. arlington now reports a critical shortage of paramedics and the fire chief confirms it. the county runs out of available medic units almost every day and he says solving that problem is one of his highest priorities. an arlington man expects to be home after being stranded in dubai today. 37-year-old mahmoud was humiliated when dubai airlines said he couldn't fly home. the airline workers contended over and over again that it was

airline policy, not to allow blind travelers to fly alone. i spoke with mahmoud from dubai this afternoon. >> never have i suffered dediscrimination in such a direct and blatant way. i got to say, for someone that has traveled as much as i have and seen as many thing as i have, this was blatant. this is right in your face. >> mahmoud said he contacted the u.s. embassy to help him work through the problem. he is hoping to educate the airline, just because he is blind doesn't mean he can take care of himself. the airline since apologized and he has been assured he will be allowed to board a flight tomorrow morning. you will need an easy pass if you want to drive on the intercounty connector. there will not be traditional toll booths when the road opens later this year. you'll need one of those electronic transponders to pay the appropriate tolls. if you don't have it, you'll

get hit with a $3 fee per toll. that's in addition to the cost of the toll. and o major commuter alert about metro this coming weekend. track work along the blue and orange line will close down the station and there will not be any blue or orange line service at the metro center either. that work is scheduled to run from 10:00 friday night until the system reopens on tuesday morning. okay. so what do you think about that? we all know you have to maintain the metro and all of our local methods of transportation are very important. but this time around, two stations and a part of a third being closed on the weekend of the capped home opener. a concert at verison center and the annual meetings between the world bank and the international monetary fund, what do you think? is that good timing or poorly planned? share your thoughts with mcginty's mail bag. the address is mailbag@wusa9.com. another reason for commuters to beware, autobots preparing for battle and they just might ruin your day.

colleges. highlight the critical role community colleges play in developing the u.s. work force. the president says specifically, he sees the two year colleges as a poll of resources for companies to find resources with specialized skills. these colleges are the unsung heros of america's education system. they may not get the credit they deserve. they may not get the same resources as other schools, but provide a gateway to millions of americans. the good jobs and a better life. thank you very much. >> educators and officials from all across the country took part in today's summit. >> after 29 years, media critic is leaving the washington post. he is joining the website known as the daily beast. curtis will continue to host a weekly media show on cnn. he says he is leaving the post to face the challenge of fast paced online journalism. this chill will not seem to leave the air, at least not quite yet. topper is back with a look at

back now with a health alert about where you work. places like our newsroom can get noisy during the day and that may not be so good for my health or anybody elses for that matter. a new report out of the university of british columbia finds that people who work in

noisy places for a year and a half could have triple the risk of having heart problems than those who work someplace quiet. 6,000 people took part in the study. the federal government now reaching out to help some struggling homeowners in virginia. the u.s. department of housing and urban development's emergency homeowner's loan program is offering loans of up to $50,000 to help with mortgage costs. in order to qualify for one of those loans, you need to be at least three months behind on your current mortgage payments and lost 15% of your income. the federal government wrote out tougher crash test standards for model year 2011 and the new rating system included side pole trash testing and technology. vehicles will receive safety ratings from 1 to 5 stars, 5 being the highest. federal safety officials say the revamped ratings will help drivers reevaluate the features such as forward collision warning systems and electronic stability control. >> we know that car

manufactures are putting new technologies in their cars and we want consumers to know how those technologies work. how effective they are, and that's why they have been included in our rating system. >> now under that new system, the four-door bmw5 series and the hyundai got the highest ratings. they are using female crash test dummies in an effort to see whether collisions impact women differently than men. nearly a dozen families looking for a place to live following an apartment building fire in prince georges county. those flames broke out this morning in the garden style apartment in the 2400 block of corning avenue. thatst in fort washington. fire investigators say a mal functioning furnace on the top floor is apparently what started it. there was an unexpected emotional meeting today, an event to honor every day heros. scott broome captured the moment when the grateful couple met the fed ex driver that

saved their lives. >> fedex driver meets janet and frank. there were hugs and his eyes filled with tears because it was spence who is credited with saving their lives. when he found them on a roadside unconscious in their van. >> to have an opportunity to thank you for saving our lives. >> it was emotional. i was trying to keep myself together because i wanted to look them in the face. i heard they were all right, but it was the pleasure of seeing them. >> neither of them remember the incident or the man who saved them because they have been overcome by spilled gasoline fumes in their minivan july 7. spence, on his fedex route noticed the car with older people inside on a blazing hot day and thought it was best to check. here's his call to 911. >> one lady is not responding and the other lady is very -- can you roll your lady down? >> if he had not followed his

lookout for the guys who made off with a giant eyeball. you heard me right. to richmond where the science museum of virginia was the proud home of this giant eyeball, actually it's kind of a fabric cover that looks like an eyeball and somebody stole it last saturday, just 12 hours after it was wrapped around this giant 29-ton ball promoting something called goose bumps, the science of fear. the thieves, however, not afraid to make off with that covering and if police have any idea how they pulled it off, they haven't told us. the museum says the eyeball cost $4,000, but i'm figuring if we ever lay eyes on it again, it will be priceless. we want to hear what you think. send your e-mails to mcginty's mail bag. the address, mailbag@wusa9.com. 9 9news now will be right back.
