and there is breaking news tonight in your only local news at 7:00. something that looked like a set of pipe bombs was found in the basement of a home in district heights. brittany morehouse is live at the scene with the latest. before the annie -- brittany, do we know what they are were? >> reporter: just a few minutes ago action spokesperson for prince george's county fire said it looked like all of the makings of a pipe bomb. we're talking about down here in a two-story house in district heights on kentucky avenue near silva hill road. earlier the bomb squad was working just an hour ago.

they had separate mini explosions here. people heard the sounds and the camera shook at one point so they definitely had something. they said they use a portable disrupter, not a robot that we caught video of working outside because this item that was found was in the basement. now we talked to the gentleman who found it. he's a real estate investor, looking at the property here. he said he was outside and he was -- he -- there was air- conditioning problems so he went inside to look in the basement and looked in the boiler room and noticed that the ducts weren't in place. >> as i started to look around at the vents, that the ducts weren't attached to, there was a bag hanging and out of curiosity i pulled on the bag and in my hands were two pipe bombs in the bag. so i didn't realize the gravity or the magnitude until i see all of this equipment here, so i just thank god that we're safe. >> reporter: and his wife is out here earlier today and

she's so grateful that he is alive, especially after seeing all of this police activity out here. still here, a live scene. have you firetrucks and some police. we do know more about the person that lived there before this gentleman came to look at the house. they were evicted from the home. and right now police are trying to track them down. we'll bring you the latest at 11:00. derek. >> thank you for that. and also tonight in your only local news at 7:00, fortress or funeral. police turn out in force to prevent a repeat of the violence that took a young man's life. the crime wave, the burglar thought to be behind 100 burglaries in fairfax county may be working in haymarket as well. and a mother murdered. police want to know if a woman was targeted outside of her maryland home. >> reporter: i'm lindsey mastis in hyattsville. a woman is gunned down in the marking lot -- in the parking lot in front of her home. >> she was a nice lady.

>> reporter: it's hard to miss the spot where a woman lost her life. >> i came home and i seen a woman's body laying in front of a car. >> reporter: jonathan martin recognized the woman. it was his neighborhood. >> she lived right next door. >> reporter: he said she's a mother and lived in marcum view condominiums with her child. >> just one little girl. >> we would see each other. >> just walking her dog, we would say hi. >> when we arrived on scene, officers found an adult female suffering from gunshot wounds and pronounced deceased a short time later. >> reporter: evan baxter said a shooting here is unusual. >> that's not a problem neighborhood for us. it's a relatively quiet community, usually. i'm surae chinn in haymarket, virginia in, prince william's county wheres there been 14 attempted or actual break-ins and police are trying to find out if it's related to 90 or so incidents. but this burglar has a pen

town 100 miles southwest of budapest. hundreds of people had to be evacuated with a sludge at a metedals plant burst on monday. four people died, three others are still missing and tonight crews are scrambling to stop the flood from reaching the dandy river and if that happens it could get to half a dozen other european nations. and a huge mess at a laundromat all caught on tape. this car comes smashing through the front window last night. witnesses say the diver just rolled right up over a curb and through the window. police say she had been drinking. and sky 9 up and over a ruptured gas main that caught fire. these are scary when we think about what happened in california. this one in columbia, maryland, near the apple ford on stanford boulevard. fire is out now but bge crews had to dig for hours to get to

the gas leak. and for several businesses no gas service and it could take hours to get back online. in tennessee, a $75 fee could have been the difference between a home saved and a pile of rubble. homeowners called 911 several times but the fire department refused to come because they haven't paid a 75 dollars fire protection fee. >> my grandson had called and when i got here he thought maybe i could get something done. and i couldn't. >> and anybody not inside the city limits, it's a service that we offer. either they accept it or they don't. >> the family said it took the fire department two hours -- or it took the fire two hours to spread from where it started to the house. they offered to pay they needed to come out but were still told no. it was only after a neighbor who paid the $75 called to report the fire, that the fire department showed up. now they said they paid in the past but hadn't gotten around

to it this year. so should the fire department have made an exception or if hadn't gotten around to it just code for didn't feel like paying it this time so too bad for them. it will be too bad if we don't have your e-mail in mcginty's mail bag. and a commuter alert we cannot stress enough into the holiday weekend. track work along the blue and orange lines will close the farragut west and mcphearson square stations and no blue or orange line service at metro center. this work is scheduled to run all weekend long, friday at 10:00 p.m. until the system reopens on tuesday morning. now metro is experimenting with ways to save money by harnessing energy when train hits the brakes. the resistance creates energy, energy metro thinks it can help power other trains. the philadelphia transit agency is doing similar experiments and think they could save 10% on power costs. taking a look now at news

my dad is the supervisor of a train station and my mom's a teacher. my dad's an auto technician. my mom's a receptionist. i'm not sure i would have been able to afford college without the tuition freeze. while tuition in other states is rising out of reach... governor o'malley made the tough choice to freeze tuition. he made my dream of going to college into a reality. i'm the first in my family to go to college. my brother and i never would have been able to afford college. even though times were tough... governor o'malley kept his promise. there's never a doubt... there's never a doubt whose side he's on. martin o'malley... moving maryland forward.

notice mail bag, a response to the bizarre video with the flight attendants doing the dance as they give out the instructions on how to fasten your seat belt. sharon in frederick said whatever you think about the dance, at least it gets your attention. i do try to listen to the flight attendants when they give the instructions but often find myself looking around to see who else is paying attention. so some of the information they are giving is lost. however, on a trip back from vegas the statement should this flight turn into a cruise, caught my undivided attention and since then i look and listen to all they have to say. that's funny, but i have to admit that as someone who flies a few times a year, i have figured out that the closest emergency exit is behind me and blah, blah, blah. but it is nice when they try to jazz up the script because i'm figuring they must be far more tired of saying it than we are of hearing it. and then there was this from
