i'm j.c. hayward. thank you for being with us. an investigation into a fatal hit-and-run accident is top our newscast. a woman was killed when she was struck on connecticut avenue northwest near dupont circle. lindsay mastis has a live report >> reporter: it happened 1:30 this morning. we're told she was getting out of the back seat of a vehicle and another vehicle came by and hit her. unfortunately she died at the hospital. it happened right outside the big hunt, a restaurant and bar in the dupont circle area. a witness was able to call in the tag number, into police. montgomery county police actually tracked that vehicle down to an apartment in chevy

chase, maryland. police say they found the vehicle in a parking garage inside a woman was behind the wheel but they say there was no key in the ignition, the car was not on but did find probable cause to take that vehicle. they asked the woman to take a breath-alyzer. we're told she refused, so they took her into custody for suspected dui. we're told that woman is 30-year-old jerita davidson. we're told she has actually been released from montgomery county police at this time. and again, they have not released the victim's name. washington police are actually giving a press conference right now and we're hoping to get an update very shortly and we'll have the latest on "9news now." >> lindsay, thank you very much. a bit of a disturbance at ballou high school in southeast washington. an officer on patrol said he recognized a student wanted on a war aren't from virginia --

warrant from virginia. he approached the youth and the student pulled out mace and sprayed it at the officer and two security guards. the student was eventually taken into custody and classes resumed. a 37-year-old woman is dead after a stabbing in a vietnamese restaurant. police were called to the bar and grill in the 7,000 block of spring garden drive in springfield halftime night -- last night. the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. a 40-year-old man was also found at the restaurant with self-inflicted wounds. according to police the attacker and victim were acquainted. prosecutors are trying to keep polygraph results out of the trial for the man suspected of killing chandra levy. igbar has been scheduled to go on trial september 18th polygraphs showed he was not deceptive when he said he was not involved in levy's

disappearance but it's believed he had practiced his answers and the polygraph results were flawed. the mosquito has been squashed. mosquito is the name for a device that emits a high-pitched sound mostly younger people can detect. it was installed outside the chinatown entrance to the gallery place metro station to discourage loitering. the company behind the mosquito removed it voluntarily after a complaint to the dc office of human rights. turning to the gubernatorial campaign in maryland. president obama and maryland governor martin o'malley will be side by side today. the two are teeming up for a campaign appearance at bowie state university. that happens in just a few hours. christie dshes kristin fisher was there earlier. >> reporter: president obama will be taking this stage at 3:00 this diswrarch and he'll be trying to rally support for several democrats running for

elections across the state. but of course the big focus is going to be on the race for governor. in maryland. the latest poll just out from rasmussen shows that maryland governor martin o'malley is leading former governor bob ehrlich 49% to 41%. that is eight points. last month o'malley was only ahead by three points. this is enough of a lead for rasmussen's 2010 gubernatorial score card to now hit this race from a tossup to leading democratic. how many students at bowie state university spent the morning watch the media get into position and watching the stage get set up? >> i've been hear since 7:30. i am so excited. i have to go to class soon. >> this is the biggest thing since i've been here at bowie state. i'm excited for obama to come. >> i could not wait for this day. it was like waking up christmas morning. i'm looking forward to seeing him. >> reporter: the rally will start at 3:00 but keep in mind doors open at 1:00 and the

event is free an open to the public. in bowie, kristin fisher, "9news now." after campaigning in maryland the president will head to chicago. he would headline two -- he will headline two campaign fundraisers for the democrat who is running for the president's old senate seat. robert ehrlich is in montgomery county this afternoon. he's scheduled to attend a women for ehrlich luncheon at old angler's inn in in potomac, in about a half-hour. we're expecting to learn more about a homicide victim in hyattsville. gunned down yesterday on markum lane near good land drive. according to neighbors the victim is a mother who lived in murcum view condos with her young daughter. police say crime in the area is rare and the woman's daughter is being cared for. prince george's county police are investigating what appears to be a discovery of a couple of pipe bombs.

a realtor found the devices yesterday in a foreclosed home in district heights. a portable disruptor was called in to explode the suspected explosives. the realtor, charles ray, was surprised by the discovery. >> when i went downstairs i was looking in the boiler room and noticed the ducts weren't in place. as i started to look around at the vents that the ducts weren't attached to there was a bag hanging from one of the vents. >> the bag contained a suspected explosive. samples from the possible pipe bombs have been sent to analysts. pictures of the alleged white house party crashers are not selling very well. 200 autographed photos of the couple were put up for sale on-line. only two have sold. that, despite the original price tag was dropped from $100 to $50. the sale was designed to raise

money because tyrek owes money to his public relations firm. "the washington post" is revealing the price tag for its "newsweek" magazine, $1. the magazine that was once a prize asset was sold to audio equipment magnet sidney harman. "newsweek" lost almost $30 million last year, amid circulation and advertising declines. the governor of texas is calling on mexico to step up efforts to find the body of a missing american man. david hartley was reportedly killed on the border lake last week. his wife says mexican pirates shot her husband on falcon lake. as they were jet skiing back to the united states. the texas governor rick perry says he's waiting for a call from the mexican president. the toxic red sludge that leaked from a reservoir in hungary reached the danube river. european officials fear an environmental disaster affecting half a dozen countries. charlie d'agata has the very latest. >> reporter: hungarians are calling the disaster a toxic sue -- sue tsunami. the sludge has reached one of europe's biggest rivers the poisonous spill inundated several villages since monday

swamping homes, tossing cars. the sludge burned the eyes and skin of people and their pets. the stench stung the noses and throats of villagers making it difficult to breathe. at least four people have been killed and more than 150 injured. fish were killed by the highal are alkaline content that polluted the river. emergency teams are trying to dilute the spill with water and vinegar to reduce the corrosion. crews are wearing masks and chemical suits as they try and contain and clean up the med. hungary's prime minister is calling it a serious environmental catastrophe. >> what i have seen is terrible. simply terrible. >> reporter: hungary dechaired a state of emergency. scientists say test samples on the sludge flowing into the danube show levels of heavy metal are not considered harmful to the environment the as for the hardest-hit areas the government says no one can

ever live there again. charlie d'agata, cbs news. we now have an update report on the investigation into this morning's fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred near do you -- dupont circle. lindsay has more. >> reporter: we now know the name of the victim, 24-year-old kayella marie right yap of columbia -- ryan of columbia, maryland. her birthday was yesterday. she would about -- been 24. we have the name of the woman -- she's already been charged in montgomery county. 30-year-old jerita davidson. we were told by police here in washington that they are planning to add additional charges, possibly vehicular manslaughter and leaving after a collision. we're also told they've impounded the suspected

he's been making us laugh for 50 years. so fans and colleagues gathered for a tribute last night to the legendary comedian bob newhart. they reminisced with television clips from his five decades on television. that included the famous conclusion to the last newhart series watched by 30 million viewers. the comedian says the final scene was his wife's idea. >> she said you ought to end the show with a dream sequence. and you wake up in bed with susie. >> wake up. >> 80-year-old bob newhart says he stays young by continuing to do stand-up and updating his facebook and twitter pages.

week, highs in the 50s. over the weekend into columbus day we're going to flirt with 80s. looking at today at glance, 75 by 3:00. 72 at 6:00 and 66 by 9:00 with generally clear skies. a bit of a breeze, gusts up to 20 and highs today in the mid-70s. then tonight, clear and chilly as the wind die down. so will the temperatures. low to mid-40s in many areas west of town. by the bay, southern maryland in town we're talking low 50s. and a spectacular friday. high temperatures mid to upper 70s. westerly wind at 5 to 10 miles per hour. what we've got going on today, a little bit of a breeze, gusts to 28 at andrews, 23 at pax river naval air station and even 20 mile-per-hour in the martinsburg area. with the winds. that's the one thing you have to consider today otherwise gorgeous. temperature now in the upper 60s. hagerstown, martinsburg. oakland only 50 but they are at 3,000 feet. everybody else upper 60s to low 70s.

frederick might be in the upper 70s the way we're going this afternoon. national 72. mostly sunny skies with a sustained wind out of west/northwest at 14. barometer continues to rise. and nationally, we're watching this, got the storm out west. remember all the storms in arizona the last few days with the tornadoes yesterday. the storm in the northeast but in between there's nothing. nothing coming toward us. that is the case for the next several days. we have this front but it's falling apart. weatherwise there's no significant weather headed this way. i'm looking at the 9 futurecast. you'll see the rains in new england leave. as we head into tonight and tomorrow and tomorrow night it's nice and quiet and clear. that is going to set the stage for a great weekend. 75 or so in downtown. 78 culpeper. 77 fredericksburg. low 70s for parts of the shenandoah valley. our 7-day forecast, a nice one. today, again, only 75. only 75. that is because tomorrow 77. got great weather for the
