early for most employees a the commerce building. they have been authorized to take administrative leave after this fire. although they are encouraged to telework if they can swing it. only people that do indeed need to show up for work today if you work at the commerce department are what's called the emergency designated employees. let's talk about this fire. it started at 8:00 last night on the third floor of the commerce building the building is currently undergoing a massive multi-year renovation and it just so happens that the fire broke out in the section undergoing asbestos removal. no one was injured but it was bad news for the firefighters because it meant they were exposed to asbestos while knocking out the fire in that construction zone. >> that elevated this incident to a different level, bringing in specialized teams to go in,

to decon our personnel. >> a deacon -- a decontamination for firefighters was set up shutting down traffic for hours. effort that went in the building had to be washed off using commercial chemicals to get off any asbestos fibers that may have gotten on their bodies while they were inside fighting the fire. you can see the commerce department behind me is defendantly still standing. this was relatively speaking a realtively small fire but it is closed because firefighters will go through, make a sweep and make sure there is no more asbestos contamination throughout the building because of this fire. police are investigating what they call a suspicious death in fairfax station. the body of a 61 yield man was found inside of a house yesterday afternoon. police say they suspect foul playing and the man's car is

missing from the home. it's described as a 2002 gold lexus 470 suv, similar to the one on the screen. it has a virginia license plate of xyw 8197. if you have any information in the case, please call police. police say they are waiting on a warn to file charges against a woman in a deadly hit and run crash. investigators believe her suv struck tyler ryan yesterday near dupont circle. ryan had just stepped out of a car after returning from dinner with a co-worker. >> there was an eyewitness there and he apparently had been in the million and was helping her and propped her up and she was like coughing up blood and stuff and he was helping her to breathe. >> reporter: there was a cyclist who followed the striking vehicle and gave

police the tag number. her best friend hopes to get the chance to thank them. ryan turned 24 on wednesday. the suspect is charged with dui in montgomery county where police tracked down the vehicle after the crash. a dramatic turn around after allegations of cheating against dozens of prince georges county police cadets. now top county officials have announced there is no indication any of the cadets that graduated in july of last year cheated on their police academy tests. understand instead, they say it was a lazy instructor that gave them perfect scores. police say the scores have been retested and all the cadets passed. the strucker has been fined but still works a the academy. time for another "living $mart" report. jessica doyle is here with a preview of the day ahead op wall street. we hope it will be a happy friday and i could be depending on the jobs report due out this morning. the good news, it could be enough to push the dow over the

11,000 mark. checking wall street for you, the dow stands at 10948 after ending the day down 19. the nasdaq was up three and the s&p fell by almost two. there may be good deals to be had this holiday shopping season. the national retall federation says retailers are prepared to slash prices in order to get you in the stores we aren't expected to spend much more than last year, but we are spending more on airfare. don't expect to see deep deals from the airlines like the past few years because they are doing better financially. united says in september it flew fuller planes with traffic up 8%. an higher fares brought in more money. for travelers, it's a -- the good times may be over. >> shouldn't they get rid of the bag fees, from my consumers.of view. >> that's not going to happen.

separate from president obama, maryland governor o'malley is doing the opposite and embracing the president. the two attended a campaign rally yesterday at bowie state university. one no-show at the rally was congressman frank cratovelle from the eastern shore who is locked in a tight race. governor o'malley's challenger, robert ehrlich spent his day campaigning in potomac, maryland at the old angler's inn. he says that is where the battle will be won or lost and he said after a slow start, campaign contributions have been pouring in during the past few weeks. it's been tried before, but now some new york officials are trying a new tactic to reduce the sale of sugary drinks. that story is coming up. plus, -- no

the headquarters of the world bank and international monetary fund in northwest dc from 7 tonight until 5:00 on sunday and that includes 18th, 19th and 20th streets. they will be closed between g streets and pennsylvania avenue. and some closings on g and h streets. protests are also scheduled. if you drive from virginia to dc, the chain bridge over the potomac will be closed. the bridge will close at 00 tonight and stay closed until monday morning at 5:00. this is for for the ongoing bridge rehab project. the bridge is scheduled to close next weekend, as well. get ready for a new traffic pattern in rosslyn this weekend. expansion of the rosslyn metro means north moore street will be one way heading south back to wilson boulevard. you can find many of the local stories in the where you live

undergoing asbestos removal. it was good because no one was inside that part of the building at the time the fire broke out but bad news for firefighters because they were exposed to asbestos knocking out the fire. a decontamination was set up for firefighters and every firefighter had to be washed off using special chemicals to get off the asbestos fibers that may have gotten on to their body glass right now the building is shut down and will be shut down for some time. we are going to go back in along with gsa and some of their teams and start to sample and determine if we have asbestos contamination throughout the building. >> reporter: so that's what is going to happen today. they will be checking the building, making sure there is no asbestos contamination. for a lot of people at the commerce department the week

welcome back to 9 news now. good morning, georgetown. we are live at fox hall and a call natch some early birds heading to work this morning. no problem our here. we will have more traffic and the commute coming up in a bit. in the news now, rescue crews believe they will reach the meyers trapped almost a half mile underground in chile by tomorrow. and once that rescue is finished the miners could start to return to the surface as soon as monday. the miners have been trapped since the collapse more than two month ago. an army psychiatrist accused in the shooting blocked a mental evaluation for his client. the defense wants to wait until after a hearing to determine whether he will stand trial.

g. komen for the cure is honoring four champions in the fight against breast cancer at the first honoring the promise gala at the kennedy center. as andrea roane tells us, one of the medical heros is renowned surgeon, oncologist la salle junior from howard university medical school. >> you get up every morning an you are full of energy and you want to get things accomplished and you want to do things. >> reporter: while most of russ fast asleep, this legendary cancer surgeon gets a lot accomplished before the sun rises. most days an 4:30 in the morning you will find him making rounds at howard university hospital. >> if you don't have your health, i don't care what it is you want to do, you can not do it and enyou it but with good health you can and i will tell people maintain that health and regain that health. >> reporter: he -- howard has been his home since he entered medical school in 1948. his teachers included medical
