montgomery county police say that a woman and child were struck by a vehicle at georgia avenue and aspen hill road this morning. our 9 news now lindsey mastis on the scene and she has the latest details in this report. >> reporter: jc, it happened right behind me on georgia avenue. a woman was pushing her 17- month-old daughter in a stroller across the street. there are cross walks in this area. we don't know whether they were in a cross walk or not, but basically they were struck by an suv. we just got the good news that the little 17-month-old girl is going to make it, and that is why police, at this point, have cleared the scene. after they were both struck, some passerbiers stop it's and discovered the little girl was not breathing. a police officer and a registered nurse were among those that stopped. they started to perform cpr on the little girl until the

ambulance got there. the mother, we're told, is also going to survive. basically, this intersection, we're told by people who are familiar with the area, is extremely dangerous. >> sometimes the drivers they don't stop. and i used to see the lady crossing the street and today i came late and didn't see what happened. >> reporter: police had the road shut down for a long time this morning. it happened around 10:30 in the morning and of course this intersection has just reopened. we're told they are still investigating. at this point, no one has been charged and they are trying to find out whether the mother and child were in a cross walk or near the cross walk. this, again is a dangerous area to cross. there are a cross walks and crossing signs but it is

confusing and of course if the light is green or if somebody didn't see the light is turned property going pretty fast down the road. >> all right. thank you very much. we now have an update on that deadly hit-and-run accident that occurred in dupont circle. the driver has surrendered to district police. kristin fisher has been following the story and she has more information on the suspect. >> reporter: she is 30 years 'ole and she just walked in the metropolitan metropolitan police department second district shortly before 5:00 this morning and turned herself in. >> reporter: davidson is accused of leaving ryan to die on the day before her 24th birthday. she is charged with one count of voluntary vehicle manslaughter. >> at this time she will meet the judge or the magistrate who will go ahead and deal with her

as far as if they are going to hold her or let her go until her court date. >> reporter: the accident happened on the 1300 block of connecticut near due upon circle. ryan was getting out of a car when she was struck by a black suv. the driver sped off. ryan was later pronounced dead at the hospital. meanwhile, police were looking for the hit and run driver. they later found her, thanks to a bicyclist who witnessed the accident an then followed the suv for several blocks before getting a tag number and calling police. >> it was an important piece of the investigation. without him the investigation wouldn't be as tight as it is now. >> reporter: in northwest washington, kristin fisher, 9 news now. >> an investigation is underway in to a shooting in woodbridge. sky 9 was over the scene in the 4700 block of hershane court. a suspect opened fire on a neighbor. one person was taken to the

hospital with a wound to the ankle and the gunman is in police custody. investigators suspect foul play in the death of a man in fairfax station. police were called to the 5700 block of laduse inn court yesterday and found a 61-year- old victim with trauma to the body. his car, a gold lexus suv, with virginia license plates xyw- 8197 is missing. anyone who sees this vehicle should call police. the springfield man has been charged in the stabbing death of a woman in a restaurant. police were called there on wednesday night and found a 37- year-old victim. a 40-year-old man has been charged with murder. the stabbing stems from a domestic dispute. most of the employees at the

commerce department have a four- day weekend because there was a small fire in the building at 14th street and constitution avenue last night. it happened in an area that is undergoing renovation. no one was injured. we have a commuter alert for you this weekend. metro's blue and orange lines will be cut in two. the farragut west and mcpherson square stations will be closed beginning at 10:00 tonight. also, no blue or orange line service at metro center. it's all happening so that metro can do some important safety work. there will be free shuttle bus service around this detour, and the closures will remain in affect until tuesday. we will have more details on this on our front page on our website at wusa9.com. a funeral is going to be held tomorrow for sergeant first class lance havingler. the army ranger, who served four tours of duty in iraq and

eight tours in afghanistan was from frederick, maryland. vogl's remains were returned to savannah, georgia yesterday where he will be laid to rest. he was killed in a fire fight in afghanistan earlier this year. new cracks have been discovered in the wall of the vietnam veteran's memorial. they were found by experts this week after an unusual vertical crack was discovered late last year. most of the cracks are small and nearly invisible to the casual observer. the wall has a history of cracks going back to 1984, two years after the dedication. one theory is the cracks are caused by heat from the sun. the surface of the stone can be 20 degrees hotter than the air temperature. and we have an update on the reported cheating scandal in prince georges county police department. chief roberto hilton now says i was a lazy instructor who set

off false alarms. that instructor gave perfect scores to more than 30 cadets who graduated from the academy in 2009. >> at this time no officers will be suspended regarding these allegations. if this audit reveals misconduct or inattention to duty, appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken. >> reporter: the chief says the instructor to gave out the perfect scores has been fined. however, he remains at the police academy. montgomery county police have arrested a 52-year-old man accused of slashing his neighbor's tires. police say that he did it more than 20 times. police say that over four years, steven ray armstrong vandalized the cars of his neighbors in wheaton. investigators say that he specifically targeted hispanic families. he has been released on bond. at 9.6%, the nation's unemployment remains unchanged. the jobless rate has now topped

in the sludge has spilled in the danube river. a town that gets water from the river is monitoring the situation closely. environmental officials say the water appears fine for right now. and the long nightmare could soon be over for those 33 miners trapped in chile. workers drilling rescue tunnels are within a couple of hundred

feet of the men, and they are hopeful they can reach them as soon as today. charlie d'agata has more. >> reporter: rescuers in chile are inching closer to a breakthrough. >> there's not long to go now, she says, as she waits for her nephew ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: relatives cheered the arrival of mobile hospital units, another sign the men may be above ground soon. >> we are hoping that we can get contact, more or less this saturday. >> reporter: but reaching the 33 trapped miners is only the beginning of the process. rescuer says pulling them out could take between two and ten days. first paramedics will be lowered in the the underground chamber to help with the rescue and decide which miners are physically and mentally ready to see the light of day for the first time in more than two months. even that is a concern when the miners are hoisted up, they will have to wear sun glass
