this is 9news now. i'm bruce johnson. thanks for joining us this saturday. an alleged murder-for-hire plot uncovered in montgomery county. it unravels when the man he hired went to police. speaking to the wife now who was targeted. >> my family is supportive and it is a shock to everyone. friends and family. >> reporter: elizabeth boyd understandably shaken that her estranged husband, 42-year-old richard bernard boyd jr. plotted to kill her. >> been a rough time. that's all i can say at this point. >> reporter: in the rockville neighborhood known as manor lake residents are stunned. >> she is a lovely lady.

she is. and the children are wonderful. i mean, the older boy, which is her son and his stepson is the nicest kid. >> reporter: according to police boyd gave the acquaintance cash, five pills and other items to help kill his estranged wife. he also allegedly provided the acquaintance with a layout layout of the couple's home. the boyds were going through a divorce. >> there were issues regarding the potential of possible outcome of the divorce that apparently mr. boyd wanted to avoid. >> reporter: boyd is being held without bond with two counts. in rockville, 9news now. >> because of the holiday on monday boyd's bond review will

take place on tuesday. it looks like a long ordeal for the trapped miners in chile will be over. a rescue tunnel has been completed. the 32 miners trapped for more than three months could be pulled out wednesday. there was a lot of celebrating going on today it is reported. [ cheers and applause >> reporter: rescue crews broke out champagne. and family members celebrated after drillers broke through to the trapped miners. a half a mile down the 33-man watch as their path to freedom opened. they have been living in the cramped hot space for over two months. chilean officials say they can bring the men out by wednesday. "i'm very happy," says the mother of a miner. "it will just be a few days until i'm with my son." >> reporter: an american operated the drill. >> we were holding our breath. >> reporter: jeff hart from colorado calls this the most

important work he has ever done. >> you're feeling at this moment? >> on top of the world. >> reporter: below the surface miners detonated dynamite to open the hole. they are now preparing the hole. first paramedics will go down to examine the men. those considered the strongest will be the last to go. they will be given sunglasses. >> reporter: it is what family members have been waiting for. on saturday the wife of a miner brought her newborn daughter who could soon meet her father for the first time. >> despite the progress today chile's mining minister is cautioning everybody that nobody has been rescued just yet. neighbors of a popular restaurant is reopening today. natural gas explosion in may of

2009 reduced the lito's pizza and pasta shop to a pile of rubble. the owner mohammed vekay vowed to reopen. now a year and a half later he has done that dedicating a wall to the firefighters that saved his life. >> the fire department responded very quick. if they didn't come i don't know what would have happened. they saved our lives. >> reporter: eight firefighters and a gas worker were hurt in that explosion. fortunately everybody survived. the owner offered free pizzas to fire firefighters and paramedics as a special offering. 12 people had to be sent to the hospital after sipping drinks spiked with a strong drug. the overdoses occurred in a private residence and none of the victims meant to get high.

none had more than one or two drinks. police are investigating whether the young women had been targeted for sexual assaults. >> what made this real difficult is when the officers were on scene trying to interview these people that were obviously intoxicated, a lot of underaged kids up there. so there was some reluctance to talk to law enforcement. but just trying to get the truth and the facts with all the intoxication made it real difficult for law enforcement. >> the suspicious drinks are now being tested. most of those students at the party attended central washington university. two grieving families in maryland are remembering their murdered sons and pleading for help in the two unsolved cases. more now from lower maryland. ♪ this little light of mine ♪ i'm going to let it shine >> reporter: 50 heart broken people are of all ages gathered to remember brian mosser.

>> brother. just give me time, please. >> reporter: the 20-year-old brian ran out of time. five years ago today he was stabbed to death. >> i have slept with my son's pajama pants under my pillow and that is no lie. that's how much i love brian and i miss him. >> that's what a mother's love does. it continues to breathe even when there is no area. >> reporter: it happened at a laurel maryland hangout. there were plenty of witnesses but no one spoke out. >> someone knows who did it. >> i just hope that something lays heavy on his heart that he just comes forward. >> reporter: even as brian's family around friends held this prayer vigil asking for justice for a murder that happened five years ago. another grieving family was asking for justice for their murdered son. >> please find it in your heart to turn him in. you have no idea the pain that this kid has caused.

>> reporter: that plea delivered at montgomery police headquarters by the victim's sister. 27-year-old julian kelly was shot to death during an armed robbery on august 21st. >> on behalf of this grieving money. >> reporter: the only thing that links these two crimes is the family's pain and need for justice. in laurel, 9news now. >> anyone with information in the moses murder case can contact the laurel maryland police department. a stranger stabs an 8-year- old boy playing video games in long island, new york. a man came up with a hunting knife and plunged the blade into the boy's back five times. the child is hospitalized tonight in stable condition. the 23-year-old suspect is charged with attempted murder. police say he had been under psychiatric care. a flock of geese caused problems for a bus headed to

new york today. it was on the new jersey turnpike this morning when at least one goose smacked into the windshield of the bus causing it to crash. the driver got glass in his eyes but was still able to control that bus until it reached a rest stop some two miles away. the company sent a replacement vehicle and all of the passengers managed to get to new york safely. that driver is expected to be okay. in chicago dozens of people are hurt tonight after a chicago transit bus ran off the road and slammed into several trees. it happened just after 6:00 p.m. three people remain hospitalized. another dozen are hospitalized in fair condition. the three people remain hospitalized in serious condition. get ready for some road closures near the air force memorial in arlington on monday. part of columbia pike will be closed for filming of the next

across the globe today fans gathered to pay tribute to the late john lennon on what would have been his 70th birthday. hundreds of people gathered in new york's central park. the gathering took place in strawberry fields in front of a memorial honoring the former beatle member. on hollywood's walk of fame a tribute to the singer/songwriter. his widow was in iceland.

78 tomorrow. now, we hit 83 for the high today. and we hit 79 on friday. so the temperatures continue to fluctuate. i'll explain why. but 78 mostly sunny. go back into the 80s briefly for columbus day on monday. got the day off hopefully. we are about 3 inches behind in rainfall. just a slight chance and it will be late. tuesday we cool back down into the 70s. but that's nothing compared to what we have got coming for the next seven days. i'll show you the mid-part of the week and latter part of the week in a few minutes. numbers are great. 57 in baltimore. 67 in the metro area. the concrete and heat retaining the heat a little bit. 61 in win chester. absolutely ideal from bethany beach over to around maryland. absolutelyly perfect conditions. 46 degrees in a few areas. that's right, mid-40s by morning. sunrise at 7:13 a.m. and we will start to see the

temperatures respond. 57 at reagan airport. about 78 degrees for a high. winds remain light and we keep the sunshine. now, you may have heard about a couple of tornadoes just around the flagstaff area on wednesday now confirmed by the national weather service. they had nine. a record for the most tornadoes for the state of arizona in one day. typically only get four a year. and if you take a look at what is happening up to the north, got a little spin here. first snowfall for the year in many locations. taking it just west of denver in fact, there it is. about an inch on friday. they picked up an additional inch today. higher elevations. changing colors. you know the more you look at this kind of gives you nightmares about last winter so let's talk about our beautiful weather. after the summer we had, it is nice to see that. here we go in town. we are hard pressed to find a cloud east of the mississippi river. frost advisory north of the front. front passing through overnight tonight. therefore, it will be cooler
