the surface by wednesday. this morning crews expect to reinforce the shaft with metal tubes. it could take up to two days to hoistall miners to the surface and chilean officials said all the miners are volunteering to be the last man out. seth doane in chile with the latest. >> reporter: the giant pieces of steel casing were hoisted into position. they're being welded together and lowered into the rescue shaft to reinforce the walls. the process should take about a day and a half. >> you can see some small fractures. and in order to prevent any contingency due to that, we are doing it in the first 100 meters. >> reporter: rescuers are inserting 16 metal tubes, each about the length of a school bus into the first 315 feet of tunnel. that part of the rock is the most jagged and unstable. then, there's a slight bend in the shaft before it turns into harder roshg for the rest of the

descent into the mine. in copiaopo, the talk at the sunday market is about the rescue sglornts it hit everyone, jenny guzman told me. most of us have mineres in our families, neighborss, friends, cousin, we've all been touched by it. but it hit pedro particularly close. his nephew jimmy sanchez, just 19 years old is the youngest of the trapped miners. you are here selling boots trying to make a living. do you want to be at the mine? do you wish you could be up there, spend more time up there? >> translator: sure, i do but i need to work to support my family, he told me, but i'm thinking about them even while i'm working. and work goes on at the mine. here, they're beginning to stage mock rescues to test out the capsule before any of the trapped miners get in. with the process of casing the rescue tunnel moves forward as plan, the next step is for

engineers to insert a system of levers to raise and lower the rescue capsule. that process should take about a day and a half, which is why they predict a wednesday rescue. seth doane, cbs news at the san jose mine, chile. back at home, an to politics, some antigay remarks from new york republican gubernatorial candidate carl paladino speaking at a campaign stop sunday hours after eight people were arraigned in a violent anti-gay attack. >> i just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful getting married and raising a family and i don't want them to be brain-washed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid or successful option. it isn't. >> he said he does not want to hurt homosexuals, his approach is quoted here, live and let live. paladino's campaign manager told the "new york times" paladino was just expressing the views he holds in his heart as a

catholic. another republican candidate is in hot water for participating in a nazi reenactment group. gop leaders are criticizing rich iott running in ohio o's 9th congressional district. a spokesman says he is military history enthusiast and says that he's also participated in world war i and civil war reenactments. there are just little more than three weeks left until the election and president obama continues his efforts to fire up the democratic faithful. he travels to florida fellow later today. sunday, he kicked off the week on the campaign trail with a rally in philadelphia. good morning. >> good morning. that campaign stop in philadelphia was a significant one. that's a state that president obama won by a hefty margin back in 2008. but now, his democratic colleagues in the state are having some trouble in the polls as they roll out a new ad campaign, republicans are

calling them desperate. with midterm elections three weeks ago, the battle control of congress is getting fierce and ugly. >> they are stealing our democracy, spending millions from secret donors to elect republicans. >> reporter: the democrats latest a new attack ad hitting air waves this week. the chamber denies a claim saying the money it receives from overseas groups isn't used for political campaigning. while one of the president's top advisers david axelrod admits he has no prove of wrongdoing, he's still skeptical. >> we now see tens of millions of dollars being spent bit chamber and a number of organizations some of which just cropped up. >> reporter: gop insiders call it dirty tricks. >> this is a desperate and i think disturbing trend by the president of the united states to tar his political adversaries with some kind of enemies list.

>> reporter: the president will stump for fellow democrats in miami today, one dra after trying to rev up support in philadelphia. >> are you fired up? ? are you ready to go? >> reporter: the obama administration hopes big rallies like this one will help reignite the passion that catapulted democrats to victory two years ago. >> on november 2nd, i need you as fired up as you were in 2008. >> reporter: the president will continue stumping for his party in delaware friday and then again in massachusetts saturday. david axelrod is also saying if foreign money isn't used to help rep kwan candidates, prove it asking them to release internal documents to prove their claims. mexican law enforcement officials search for two suspects, brothers in the case of a missing american jet skier. david hartley has not been seen since september 30th. his wife said he was shot by

pirates. >> hopefully, they can tell us where he is and locate where he's at so we can kind of end this. until he's home, it's not final for us. >> tiffany hartley maintains she tried to save her husband but fled when the pirates started shooting at her. officials say the suspects belong to a gang of pirates that has been terrorizing a mexican town. on the "cbs moneywatch," most stocks in asia were higher this morning. randall pinkston is in new york here with that and more. randall, good morning. >> good morning. and the news in asia, asian markets surged amid a weak dollar, hong kong's hang seng posted big gains in early trading, a 26-month high. the nikkei was closed. earning season back on wall street, with a number of heavy weights slated to report this week. last week saw some big gains for the market. the dow gained more than 1.5% to close above 11,000 for the first time in five months.

nasdaq added more than one percent. 40 states expected to announce a joint investigation this week into the expanding foreclosure mess. friday, bank of america became the first big lender to completely halt home seizures and three other lenders have announced moratoriums on repossessing homes in 23 states. there are allegations many foreclosures have been pushed through with forged documents, phantom titles and fake social security numbers. more than 58 million social security recipients will go another year without an increase in benefits. the government is expected to announce this week that because of low inflation, there will be no cost of living adjustment. this would be the second straight year of no increase and just the second since 1975. one-third of recipients rely on social security for at least 90% of their income. and microsoft is trying to get back into the smartphone race. today, the company is expected to unveil a new lineup of smartphones that run on the

to grow marijuana at home and possess an ounce for personal use. individual cities would be free to regulate and tax sales. >> we have a whole new economy that could flourish here in california around cannibus. >> reporter: believe it or not the measure has sparked high anxiety at some medical marijuana shops. >> we are not sure what our business will look like post-prop 19. >> reporter: for employers, the law could create a giant headache. employees couldn't be fired for smoking pot unless employers prove the drug impaired job performance. >> so, it does open the door for the ability of employees to smoke pot at work. >> reporter: even if it passes, pot would still be illegal under federal drug laws. so, it's likely prop 19 will be challenged in court, which means the whole controversial issue could just go up in smoke. bill whitaker, cbs news, los

l.a., sunny and 84. time for a check of the national forecast. the latest satellite picture shows clouds over the central plains and the northwest while skies are clear in the southeast and southwest. later today, scattered thunderstorms will be on the move through the southern plains. the northwest will get showers. the southeast is feeling rather warm and some portions of the northeast will be on the cool side. switching to sports now, philadelphia advances to the national league championship series. cole hamels of philadelphia gave up only five hits and had eight strikeouts against cincinnati. with a 2-0 victory, the phillies swept the reds in three straight games. philadelphia will play saturday against either atlanta or san francisco. the giants scored the winning run in the ninth inning on an error by braves second baseman brooks conrad. the 3-2 san francisco win gives them a 2 games to 1 lead in the series. they could wrap it all up later

tonight in atlanta. and tampa bay's evan longoria had a home run and two doubles against texas and the rays beat the rangers 5-2, to even that series. game 5 is tuesday in florida. the winner of the series will face the yankees on friday. switching to the nfl, the defending super bowl champion saints were upset. their quarterback drew brees was intercepted, wow, three times by arizona. undrafted rookie quarterback max hall led the cardinals to victory over new orleans. in houston, new york's e eli manning connected on three touchdown passes. the giants defense had another strong game and the giants beat texans 34-10. when we return, another look at this morning's top stories and a perfect 10. why sunday was a day to remember for thousands of couples. ♪

on the "cbs morning news" a look at today's weather. the southern plains will see storms, some of this possibly severe. the rest of the nation has sunny skies with warm temperatures. the southeast is looking exceptionally warm with highs around 90 degrees. here's another look at today's top stories. rescue crews could start pulling those trapped chilean miners to safety as early as wednesday. officials hope the escape shaft will be finished sometime today. and the republican candidate for governor in new york carl paladino says he doesn't want children to be, quoting here, brain-washed into thinking homosexuality is acceptable. sunday, something that won't happen again for another 100 years, the date was october 10th, 2010, or 10-10-10, plenty of people marked the day with special celebrations.
