laying. this almost happen at 11:00 this morning at columbus plaza in front of union station. this is the 99th annual ceremony here in washington. columbus day isn't a holiday for everyone and that could mean a closure on the metro's blue and orange line are big problems. kristin fisher is tracking the commuter alert for u.s. and she is live at the foggy bottom station with more. >> good morning, jessica. we are talking about adding an extra 40 minutes to your commute if you are planning to ride the blue or orange line through downtown washington this morning. and i want to show you why. take a look at this map. you can see the problem. we are talking about the fact that both the farragut west and mcpherson square stations are closed and will stay that way until 5:00 tomorrow morning. there will be no service at the blue and orange line also. so that means orange line trains are operating from vienna fairfax to foggy bottom and federal triangle to new car

rollton. and blue line from federal triangle to largo town center. free shuttle bus service will be available around the closed stations. metro says they chose this weekend to do all of this work because rush hour ridership is usually down 40% on columbus day. take a look at this graphic and you will see what i mean. in 2009, metro reported 358,000 trips on columbus day. compare that toe following monday. so we are seeing a significantly lower number of people riding the metro today than what they would normally ride on the average monday morning, but still i have been chatting with people getting off the train a t at the foggy bottom station and a lot of them are frustrated because we are talking about an extra 40 minutes to your commute.

but the good news, neck out these buses. -- check out these buses. they keep rolling up. the good news is there are a ton of shuttle buses waiting for people to take them from the foggy bottom station to where the metro rail traffic resumes on the blue and orange line. so that's the good news. but the bad news, jessica, as we have been saying all morning is plan on 40 extra minutes to your morning commute. >> that's really tough. thank you. rougher than normal trying to find a place to park this week. there are restrictions in affect for the filming of transformers 3. most restrictions are along 17th, 18th and 19th streets around d and e streets northwest and there will be restrictions around the national mall. roads will be closed starting tomorrow and you can get the list at wusa9.com. coming up at 6:30, we will talk to ddot to learn more about the

closures. a driver who struck and killed two pedestrians in rockville is charged with dui. it happened as the two tried to cross rockville pike after 3:00 on sunday morning. investigators believe the two men had just left the white flint metro station. police say the driver briefly stopped but then left the scene. >> the driver and the female passenger appear to be tending to the pedestrian. the driver and passenger got back in to the acura and drove north. >> found the car. the car looks like a it hit a pole. i didn't know it hit two people. >> reporter: the driver of the car returned to the scene. police identified them. in addition to dui he could face additional charge. both of the victims are 26 years old and from silver spring. no cost of living

adjustment for people getting social security checks. the government will announce this week it will keep payments steady for 2011. more than 58 million americans received those checks. the price of plane tickets for thanksgiving and christmas are expected to start to go up next week. expedia predicts thanksgiving tick prices will peak early in november. christmas travel will peak in mid november. the expermits say surf websites and comparison shop before buying the ticket. the cost of driving is going up too, regular grade gas in the dc metro area now averages $2.77 a gallon. that's up 15 cents in the last month. nationwide the average is up to $2.80 a gallon. redskins fans feeling good this morning. the team is 3-2 after yet another surprising win. the skins trailed the packers the entire game but managed to score ten unanswered points in the 4:00 quarter.

two governors, two different approaches. even in good times bob ehrlich didn't make education a priority. he increased college tuition by 40%, cut school construction by $200 million, and ehrlich voted to eliminate the department of education while serving in congress. but in the toughest of times, martin o'malley has made record investments in public schools, new school construction, and o'malley froze college tuition four years in a row. with martin o'malley, our children always come first.

one of the biggest fears of the elderly is one day somebody saying they condition live alone anymore. this morning, derek mcginty shows us a group that specializes in providing a dose of help to keep seniors in their own homes. >> reporter: high school kids, raking, cleaning, doing chores for free and it's not even their house? what the heck is going on here? >> it's a gratifying feeling when you do something for one other than yourself. >> reporter: these young people are volunteers from saint anne's school. this is a required school

project but at the same time -- >> i live around here and see some of these people every day. i think helping out my neighborhood families is really great. >> reporter: since 1981, the christian community group homes has been dedicated to helping seniors retain their independence, as long as possible. lea pena is the assist tan director. >> we do it in a couple of ways. the first is by providing affordable housing to low- income seniors here in the district. we have three group houses that house a total of 20 seniors on our campus. >> reporter: you have already seen the other way, it is called, appropriatelying the age in place program. >> we connect volunteers with seniors who are living in the communities, primarily in wards 4 and 5 and provide those seniors with necessary home maintenance services to enable them to live in their homes and communes. >> we are taking time out of our day to come in but they are

this morning's commute tricky and long for anyone taking metro across town. that's because the blue and orange lines are cut in two. kristin fisher is live at the foggy bottom station following this commuter alert. >> reporter: good morning, jessica. the god news is, it is columbus day and traffic on the metro is a little less than normal but we are talking about delays and extra time added to the commute in the range of 30 to 45 minutes. so for those traveling on the blue and orange lines this morning, i want to break it down for you using our ipad. check this out. what we are talking about is the fact that farragut west and mcpherson square stations along the blue and orange line will be closed until 5:00 tomorrow morning. this means that if you are traveling on the orange line you can take the train from vienna fairfax to foggy bottom. from foggy bottom you want to continue on the orange line. you want to get off, hop on a shuttle bus and pick it up at

the federal triangle and it will be back open on the orange line from federal triangle to new car rollton. i want to point out metro center here is open on the red line, but it is shut down on the orange and blue line. for the blue line, what this means is you can hop on the train starting at franconia springfield an take it to foggy bottom. but then you have to hop on the shuttle bus to get up at federal triangle an the blue line will be open from federal triangle all the way to largo town center. all in all we are talking about 40 minutes of extra time added to the morning commute if you are using the blue and orange lines. some riders say, hey, it's understandable. others are frustrated by this delay. i found one this morning. take a listen. >> reporter: i have to get to tenleytown and i don't know how i will get there. i have no idea since metro is closed and everything and i'm posed to be there to help inventory at safeway that i

the prince georges county police academy instructor behind a reported cheating scandal has been transferred out of his teaching job. he's working in the sex offender unit now. the police chief says cadets received perfect scores on a test last year because the instructor was too lazy to write down their actual grades. he denies the allegations. farmers in faulkier county say they plan to rebuild a livestock market that burned to the ground. it was destroyed by fire last month. a dozen cows were killed in the blaze. the chairman says the price tag for rebuilding the market could reach over $1 million. the first time in nearly two years the redskins have won two games in a row and this morning the burgundy and gold is in first place in the information east. the skins trailed the packers the entire game, but they managed to score ten unanswered points in the fourth quarter. mcnabb finished the day 26 of
