place believe a dangerous combination of speed and alcohol led to a violent crash in prince georges county. two women victims were thrown from a car. we have the latest information. >> reporter: this all started at the a 500 block of kenilworth avenue. that's a few blocks away from this crash scene here at this intersection of baltimore and east-west highway. the car was traveling down east- west highway apparently lost control and crossed over baltimore avenue and took down a pole. look at this front yard. the yield sign is knocked over. walk over here, another traffic sign on the ground. even a fire hydrant was knocked off. the car then struck this tree and continued to careen through this front yard. folks here at the group home cannot talk on camera. however, we are told the women were ejected from the vehicle. both on them on either side of the brick wall. we talked to a neighbor moments

ago who heard the chaos. >> they were arguing back and forth like what do we do? and the woman was screaming because she's saying they are dead. they are dead and the guy's like yo-yo you have to put this car out. the car's on fire. >> reporter: this is what the car looked like as it was towed from the scene. fortunately the women are still alive. late word we are receiving from police, the women are both in critical condition. police tell us alcohol was a factor in the crash. back here live at the intersection of baltimore and east-west highway. you can see the window was shattered. folk say the living room is covered with broken glass. they have having insurance adjustors to come out and look. fortunately no one inside was hurt. >> thank you. we have now breaking news

from fairfax county. at least six people have been injured in a crash. this happened on i-66 west near blake lane. we do not know the nature of the injuries, and we do not know the cause of the crash, but as you can see it appears one lane is getting by on the right, but westbound traffic is backed up for miles. we'll be following the story throughout the day. a driver who police say struck and killed two pedestrians in rockville has been charged with driving under the influence. this happened as two 26-year- old victims tried to cross rockville pike at marinelli drive at 3:00 sunday morning. investigators believe the two men had just left the white flint metro station. according to police, the driver stopped briefly and then left the scene. >> the driver and the female passenger appeared to be tending to the pedestrian.

the driver and passenger got back in to the acura and drove north. >> the car look like it hit a pole. i didn't know it hit two people. >> reporter: the driver of the car returned to the scene. police identified him. in addition to the dui charge, police say that the driver could face additional charges. both victims are from silver spring, maryland. downtown parking will be a little more challenging for some this week. that's because streets are being closed for a hollywood film crew that will be shooting "transformers 3. " restrictions are already in affect. we caught film crews unloading and preparing for action around the mall this morning. wisconsin avenue in georgetown was closed else early this

freedom could be just days away for the 33 trapped miners in chile. the rescue shaft, that will bring them to daylight, is being reinforced but there are many potential dangers. we have the latest developments. >> reporter: chilean rescue workers say they finished installing the last of 15 giant steel tubes designed to renn reinforce the top of a shaft used to bring up 83 trapped miners. the next step is building a platform to support the capsule when it is brought up. they hope to start the actual rescue as early as wednesday. below ground, the men have been preparing for the big day with

a special diet. it includes a high calorie chocolate drink to boost nutrition and have started to take aspirin to prevent blood clots. each of the men will have to endure a twisting 20 minute 2,000-foot ride to the surface in a rescue capsule. after more than two months, workers were finally able to break through in the miners on saturday. >> it was unbelievable. the feelings and emotions that everyone was going through, it was undescribable. >> reporter: anxious family members say they are waiting for the moment they can see their loved ones. she says i know i'm going to hug him but probably when that moment comes, i won't do anything. i'll just cry and scream. >> reporter: the 33 men will have to adjust to a whole new world, filled with video cameras, movie offers and book deals. 27 of the families have filed a $10 million suit against the mining company for negligence but for now everyone is just praying for a safe and joyful

return when the men see light for the first time in months. cbs news, new york. >> the miners have been trapped underground longer than anyone else in history. another town in hungary is on alert because of the huge spill of toxic sludge. the military sent in 300 soldier and 127 transport vehicles in case they are needed for evacuations. the dangerous toxic sludge is a by-product from an aluminum plant. it leaked out of a reservoir last week in to villages and waterways. and another body was found today, bringing the death toll to eight. police in mexico say they have identified two suspects wanted for the murder of an american jet skier. his wife says that david hartley was killed by pirates as they were on a lake that bordered mexico. both suspects are members of an alleged cartel. they come from a town hartley
