a man was found dead this morning in his home. peggy fox has more on the investigation. >> reporter: the man who died was in his 50s or 60s. neighbors tell me he was a loner and they say he didn't really endear himself to the neighborhood, yet one neighbor tried to save his life this morning. >> i knocked on the door here on the driveway side and ran around the back and knocked on the windows in the back and there just wasn't anyone. >> when he tried to wake up the man who lived here it was probably too late. he was already dead from a fire that may have been smoldering all night. the man lived alone in this house with his dog and cat. he and his dog were found decreased in his bedroom. a woman driving by saw the smoke and called 911. >> we had fire upon our arrival. it had come up through this first floor. they went in, had access problems due to things behind

the door and contents in the house. >> reporter: firefighters encountered an eight foot hole inside the door. they are trying to determine if the fire burned up from the basement or down from the living room. at 10:00 last night, several neighbors smelled something burning one called police but no one could figure out where the smoke was coming from. >> i called fairfax city police nonemergency at 10:30 and lot them know that i smelled smoke in the area and i didn't see any active fires but they may want to send somebody out to check. >> reporter: neighbors tell us the man smoked an the fire chief tells us he had no smoke detectors inside of his home. they are trying to figure out what caused the fire, and also they are not releasing his name until they notify next of kin. although they are not sure if the man has any connection of kin. reporting live in fairfax, peggy fox, 9 news now. police in college park are investigating a stabbing incident that left four men

injured. three of the victims are university of maryland students. prince georges county police say that a fight began around 1:30 this morning at the thirsty turtle bar on route 1. it spread to the cornerstone grill, where the stabbings took place. >> that's crazy. i can't believe that happened like so close to campus, right here on route 1. that's -- i haven't heard of anything like that in a while around here. >> reporter: all four victims should survive, and so far no arrests have been made in the case. maryland state police say a woman was killed while walking along interstate 270 in gaithersburg. this happened just before midnight on the southbound side of i-270 near route 124. police say the woman was hit by a car and an out of service metro bus. both drivers stayed on the scene. the ft. hood shooting victims will face

the alleged gunman today at a hearing. the army psychiatrist, who was paralyzed, has been charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder. a military court is trying to determine if there is enough evidence to try major hassan. >> reporter: in this courthouse on the base grounds, the alleged shooter, major hassan is sitting a few feet from his victims. the military calls it an article 32 hearing, the equivalent of a grand jury proceeding. victims ' families say this day couldn't so come soon enough. >> has become a bit frustrating and i'm glad we have finally to this point because the process needs to continue. >> reporter: her husband michael was among the dead in the rampage last november 5th. hassan, an army psychiatrist, is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted

premeditated murder for the worst shooting ever on a u.s. military base. >> i have gone through some of the bad phases of the grief process but it is a long ways yet to go. >> reporter: security is tight here at ft. hood, especially when hassan is escorted in and out of the courtroom. the media and base personnel are kept from getting a look at him. he is in a wheelchair, paralyzed from the waist down after shot by two police officers during the ten-minute attack. one of them, sergeant munley was injured and is expected to testify. the hearing is expected to last three week and will determine whether hassan will have a full trial. if that happens, he could face the death penalty. there's been a reported terrorist threat aimed specifically at the washington, d.c. area. an al-qaeda publication is urging jihaddists to target restaurants in our region. it says the goal would be to kill government workers. the new york daily news reports

that the publication is printed by a man from north carolina who now works for al-qaeda. a senior u.s. official calls him "bad news. there's no official comment from the government. >> reporter: a ceremony will be held today in norfolk to mark the tenth anniversary of the attack on the uss cole. 17 people were killed when al- qaeda suicide bombers used a small boat, loaded with explosives to blow a huge hole in the ship's hull. the ship was refueling in the yemen port of aden when it came under attack. charges have been dropped against the saudi man accused of masterminding that attack. a heads up for some federal workers. the u.s. department of agriculture's animal and plant health inspection services building will be closed today. that's because of a small electrical fire that broke out over the weekend. there's no word yet if that building will reopen tomorrow. filming of transformers 3

has been suspended in the washington area after yesterday's accidental crash between a car in the movie and a real life police car. our 9 news now reporter kristin fisher has the latest on location. >> reporter: this wasn't in the script. the famous yellow camaro, known in the transformer series as the bumblebee collided with a police k-9 unit on monday afternoon. it happened in front of the museum of the american indian. the police suv was responding to an emergency call when the driver cut through the closed movie set and slammed in to bumblebee while crews were filming a chase scene through the nation's capital. >> when i saw bumblebee got crumbles my heart dropped, i was like oh, no, not bumblebee. >> bumblebee went in the road and there was a police car and whamo. >> everyone was surprised by it, even the crew.

>> reporter: no one was seriously injured. the stunt driver walked away. the officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries but bumblebee was taken away on a flat bed truck. police shut down filming until further notice. the metropolitan police department released a statement saying they are investigating the facts of crash, and that filming of this movie on closed dc city streets has been suspended until safety procedures can be reviewed. in washington, kristin fisher, 9 news now. a consumer alert for the owners of mercedes-benz cars them company is recalling the c and e class models made between june of 2009 and february of ten. the company says the cars have been shown to gradually lose their power steering fluid, making them difficult to control. we're just three weeks away from the november election. coming up next, we will hear why jobs are so important to the candidates in maryland's

final preparations are being made for the rescue of those 83 miners trapped underground in chile. the test run went off without a hitch, and excitement is building above ground. charlie d'agata explains which miners will be brought up first, and why. >> reporter: the rescue cage is ready to go. engineers in chile tested the bullet-shaped capsule, sending it through the entire length of the shaft. the shaft held firm and just as important the capsule didn't spin much. rescuers say they will start winch the miners to safety later tonight. >> from here on out it will be nice and smooth and i believe they will all come out fine. >> reporter: some worry it could cause the mine's roof to

collapse. it will take more than 36 hours to get all 33 miners out once the rescue begins. each men will face a claustrophobic journey along from the underground prison to the surface. most miners have remained in high spirits, even after 68 days trapped half a mile underground. officials have divide the men in to groups. the fittest will be pulled up first. rescuer says they will be more capably physically and mentally to tackle any early difficulties. she is nervous for her husband. she says i only have one desire, to see him and kiss him. the miners won't be going home right away. they will be taken to the hospital first where hot shower and fresh clothes are waiting the miners are asking for privacy when they come up so they can make up for lost time with their families [cheering and applause] >> reporter: this is how people partied when rescuers broke

culpeper, luray in the upper 70s and lower 70s elsewhere. a gorgeous day. winds are south-southeast at national. that's keeping them cooler due to the potomac being chilly and the dew points are slowly dropping to the upper 50s. big storm system went through with all the showers and storms. behind it are the clear skies but our attention will focus 0 the west the next couple of days. this system will be here on late wednesday night early thursday morning. the front is coming through. the air is much cooler behind the front. 50s for highs in buffalo today and we will be pushing 80. front comes south. not much weather wit. clear skies and partly cloudy tonight. tomorrow could be a few clouds south of town. fredericksburg, southern maryland but the showers will start to increase in coverage as we head in to late wednesday night, early thursday morning. this is 2:00. look at this moisture how it really expands by morning. a couple of showers midday if not much of the day and that will keep the temperatures down in the 50s to near 60 degrees.

in the tropics, we are looking at paula. this is a hurricane here. spinning back here, moving to in the north northwest, cancun, cozumel, the western tip of cuba. paula has winds of 75 miles an hour as of 11:00. real near cancun here by tomorrow and then tomorrow afternoon, evening and then it is gotting to do much. me ander and weaken as the forecast from western buy cuba. this means heavy rains for parts of those areas and the hurricane warnings for the yucatan coast. 68 tomorrow. back to reality. thursday, showers and rain at times. only near 60. low 60s on friday. probably going to be a nice, crisp night for high school football and the weekend looks good. 70 by sunday. we are going to the kitchen on this gorgeous tuesday when 9 news now at noon returns. ♪
