the dc department of public works. and taken for a ride. >> reporter: i'm scott broom in prince george's county where police are trying to track down a carjacker who took a car with a 4-year-old boy inside. a relieved reunion between a mother and her 4-year-old son in the wake of the horrifying carjacking. the boy in the backseat of the silver pontiac grand pee when the carjacker took -- grand prix when the carjacker took off with the car. and actually stopped the car, abandoned it. yeah, the victim was actually pumping gas last night at the shell gas station. she was approached from behind, by the suspect, who actually

grab her to the -- by the arm, proceeded to jump into her car and took off towards the district. yeah, the kid was asleep the whole time, so never realized what happened. the kid was probably the only witness, but actually asleep the whole time. where the workers were back on the job, one day after their co-worker was shot and killed in the parking lot. and even in the rain, guards from dc protective services, they found watch at the entrance of the street as the employees, they returned to work. 24 hours after he was shot and kill. >> it was a lot of tears, a lot of emotions. a lot of anxiety. >> reporter: they are shocked at the apartment and they are demanded more security at all the lots. showing us an open door at this capitol hill, a government lot where we drove in and parked without a question. >> whether there would be a guard on that side.

whatever method that they choose, they were willing to back them on that. >> reporter: i'm peggy fox in fairfax county where police, they are teaching people how to protect their homes against the serial burglar. starting with closing garage doors and making sure that every door is locked. >> he is cash-driven only. >> reporter: patrick lucas says that the serial burglar is disciplined. mostly, he's after one thing. money. and he is quiet and under the cover of darkness, often gets into a home through an unlocked door, or the garage door. and we easily found several opened today. >> they want to stop and remind you that your doors are open. especially when you want to be that close at night. >> reporter: they could hinder or help thieves. >> you want to see through the neighbor's property. that's what we want. is >> so no one could hide? so you can see the movement. a fair motion sensor that goes on. you can see it. where they go across the street over here. people think that they want their privacy. and you can't see it.

states, including better than virginia. >> reporter: trust me to cut your taxes. and where is the money to pay for that? and even the differences, they emerged over the social issues. the gay marriage, for example. >> here in dc, they allow the gay marriage. what do you think about may gauge in maryland? >> firmly oppose it. >> to recognizing it or allowing it? >> i supported the attorney general's decision that we should recognize those marriages in maryland. >> on the proposed purple line, o'malley wants to build the light rail. ehrlich says buses are all we can afford. >> it is the purple that i'm doing it is a bus wrapped in transit, a bit of a met fore for the -- metaphor for the ehrlich foundation. it's more expensive and less effective. >> they could talk about light rail all day long. they can't fund it, they can't tell you how it was funded. >> there was a lot of that. so if you missed today's debate, we're rebroadcasting it

a teenager in pennsylvania got a little too excited after passing his driver's test. he thought the car was in park and then, well, you know how that goes. you think you're in park and you panic. that sent the car crashing into the driver's license center and at least three people in that building got hurt. luckily, none of those injuries were serious. no word yet if they face any

charges or they need to give the license back. >> okay, you're on the verge of stepping out into the crosswalk when it happens. they go racing by. now, you thought you had the right of way because you're the walker, right? but it's a pretty dicey situation for you and for the drivers. and armando trull is live in bethesda with a look at a new push for more pedestrians. armando? >> reporter: yeah, to go over the past few months, there's an open em diddic of the pedestrians. that's in fact what happened to this intersection just a few weeks ago how the police officials are speaking out and counting on pedestrians to take an active role to keep you and yourself safe. >> and the trail of broken pedestrian bodies could be found in montgomery county. >> the pedestrians, they have got to realize that as soon as they step foot on the surface of the streets, that they are in a danger zone. >> reporter: but there is also a pedestrian carnage in prince george's county. >> last year at this point, we had 11 pedestrian fatalities. this year, we have had 14.

so we see an increase in the trend in the pedestrian fatalities. >> reporter: in the district, they are now making up almost 40% of the traffic debts. >> going up is the pedestrian fatalities. >> we're afraid we might see the increases because it is going to be getting darker and earlier, some more people will be out at night. >> reporter: that's why police officials in our area, they are speaking with one voice when it comes to the pedestrian safety. >> reporter: we have distracted drivers. we also have the distracted walkers. if you go downtown during the lunch hour and you watch the people crossing those streets, count how many of them are either on the phone, or using the blackberry, or have both ears plugged with some sort of music. >> and they are walking with a friend, having a conversation. their conversation needs to stop. it's around the cell phone. they need to put that phone down. if you're texting, they need to stop that. if you use a crosswalk, make sure they wear the light clothing. don't close in the middle -- don't cross in the middle of

the road. >> the bottom-line message is that pedestrians need to be aware. i'm armando trull, back to you. >> good advice, armando. thank you. well, there are some new questions about safety tonight down another me -- safety tonight from metro. finding hazards, keeping workers safe. that audit is just a snap shop from june of this year and the oversight committee chair says that metro is responding much more quickly than they used to, even just a few years ago. >> it doesn't mean that they are still not concerned, but i think that we and metro are very much on the same page with knowing where they are going with these. >> reporter: and now, on those escalators and the elevators that are always broken, well, the oversight committee is getting about half of the preventive maintenance recommended. however, be metro says that they have hired nearly a dozen of the mechanics, creating the rapid response teams and they

plan to replace the number of the worst escalators. for those so-called china town buses are getting some competition. next week, the no-it express will begin service between u street and the park's slope neighborhood of brooklyn, new york. now, it will cost you $25 one way, $45 round trip. and that service is set to begin next friday. a high school track team in massachusetts probably getting a little more attention than they wanted with their brand new sweatshirts. the wakefield high school students put the initials of the squad on the back of the shirts, but if you think about it, wakefield track and field abbreviates, wtf, not what you think in a company. >> i thought that it was what everyone else thought it was. i ended up looking at the sweatshirt more clearly. >> it's kind of funny. it throws people off as they look at it, wtf, you know, kind of inappropriate, but at the same time, it stands for something else. >> and so you say. well, the school's superintendent says it's not the way she wants a student

population to be represented. i don't know if that means they need to get rid of the sweatshirts. >> i don't understand the problem. >> i bet you don't. >> do you understand what's going to happen weatherwise for the weekend? >> yes, that's all we care about. and wind tonight, wind tomorrow. probably even wind into saturday morning at least. here's your forecast first now. the next three days, windy tomorrow, pleasant, i mean, we'll be pleasant. 65, might be a little cooler than that because of the wind. we're looking at a nice night for the high school football, just bundle up. then 65 on saturday. for and the dog walk at 10:30. then nice on sunday. in fact, a little bit milder. sunshine, high temperatures near 70s. but if you're going to the game, sunday night, i would recommend some sort of the jacket or sweatshirt. all right, day planner for tomorrow. 49 to start. chilly. which means mid-40s in the burbs. upper 50s by lunchtime. walk into lunch, you still want that little light coat. and then 63 by evening at 5:00 and the winds will still be a factor both on how you feel and perhaps some of high school football games if someone is trying to take a last-minute

phone call. look at the winds, northwesterly. gusting to 25. and a wind gust of 22 in martinsburg. now, let's go to the computer for just a second, doppler for just a second. we'll track these little light showers over the past couple of hours. there's not much left of them. but you're trying to walk the dog around parts of the metro area that you might get a sprinkle around vienna. mcclain out here at 93. where are they going to go? just u drift out -- just drift out across northwest. so that's about it. they had dissipate pretty quickly. nothing is severe. let's go back to the computer. for tonight because of that, we're going to keep a chance of an evening shower in. temperatures in the 40s, even downtown. we're talking about the 40s tonight. we're looking at 48 downtown. 46 in college park. 46 in bowie. and mid-40s in fairfax and reston and sterling. so some of the furnaces will be kicking on, hopefully you have

had them checked out. by morning, partly cloudy, windy, in the 40s. by the afternoon, partly cloudy, windy, cool. i mean, still a nice day. high temperatures, 65. and the winds will continue northwest at 10 to 20 and rather gusty. all right, next seven days. 65 friday and saturday. and then near 70s on sunday. and we have storm showers coming in late monday and tuesday. not a real big system. most of the showers quite frankly, are just north of town. going back to the 60s. nice day on wednesday. we're back in the mid-60s. a little blustery next thursday. temperatures in the 50s, kind of windy. maybe some showers, a little bit more like march or november. >> looking like march and november. let's get to the weird news files. do you ever get the sense of the workers over in europe that they have seen just a little cushier where we do? they are into their first ever fiesta contest. get this. in less than nine days, some folks having a pretty nice day over there. others are just using it out,

handed way of seeking attention to soothe his bruised ego. but ron says there's nothing wrong with taking a so-call mental health day every now and then. let's face it, the average employee is exhausted by hump day. the key to mitigating those mental health day is to work for a boss who recognizes and appreciates the daily struggles their employees face. simply put, for example, a thank you of free friday pizza, a pat on the back goes a long way towards eliminating the employee on waking up on a given monday or friday with the theatrical sore throat and calling in sick. and from our facebook page, the princess, what's the big deal if arenas decided to give a player more time on court? i give him an a plus for looking out for the other hard working players. i give him a d minus for just being strange. even if you take a phony sick day, it would be pretty unlikely to say sorry, boss, i wasn't really sick yesterday, hope you don't mind. so that is what gilbert did.
