so so many scammers trying to take advantage of all of this new traffic. we'll be loolg with peter greenberg to tell you how to stay away from those and reds flags and good deals to find. >> if anybody has answers -- use first, breaking news. the secret files were made public by wikileaks an international anti-secrecy organization and the release was timed they say to coined side with the upcoming congressional elections. cbs news correspondent allen pizzey live in london at the wikileaks news conference with the latest for us this morning. good this morning. >> reporter: good morning. the documents wikileaks calls the iraq [ inaudible ] seem to confirm u.s. charging of iranian involvement of insurgency in iraq but bring to light more killings by american security firms. described as the largest leak of such files in u.s. military history, nearly 400,000

classified documents focus on what appears to be american troops turning a blind eye to abusive detainees, torture, and even extra judicial killings by the iraqi forces. the documents detail numerous reports by american troops being marked no investigation required. the leaked reports also indicate the number of iraqi civilians killed since the invasion in 2003 is significantly higher than the official one, although it does coincide more or less with that reported by the press. >> we hope to correct some of that attack on the troops that occurred before the war, during the war, and which has continued on since. >> reporter: the publication of more than 70,000 documents pertaining to the afghan war in july by wikileaks brought condemnation from both the pentagon and nato and raised fears the action could endanger both national security and the lives of soldiers and civilians who had cooperated with them. so far, those fears appear to be

ungrounded and the wikileaks chief unmoved. the source of the iraqi release is believed the same army private who is currently under investigation for the afghan documents. this time, wikileaks has joined forces with human rights organizations and lawyers, a move apparently designed to put even more pressure on the pentagon. chris? >> allen pizzey for us this morning. thank you. pill tarry officials fear the documents could put lives at risk. we turn to our national security correspondent david martin at the pentagon for us. good morning. >> good morning. >> now much of a problem does this create for the pentagon? >> well, the pentagon was concerned about two things, the names of iraqis who cooperated with the u.s. and now might be subject to reprisal. apparently, wikileaks has made an attempt to delete what it considered to be sensitive names so. that -- that fear may not

materialize. the other fear was that this is now an online database, which the enemy can study to get a better understanding of the tactics and procedures that american troops use. that's -- that's certainly not going to help american troops. so, at the very least, i think the pentagon feels that these documents tell the enemy more than the pentagon wants this em to know. >> huf a chance to look at some of these documents. what's the most surprising revelation you've come across so far? >> well, the surprise is that there are no surprises. it documents in detail from the ground level because these are field reports from troops the things we already knew. we knew iraqi civilians were dying in horrific numbers. now we have a specific number to put on that. 66,000, most of them at the hands of other iraqis. we knew there were a number of

tragic cases in which innocent iraqis were approaching american checkpoints and for one reason or another failed to heed a warning to stop and were shot. we now know that close to 700 iraqis were killed that way. we knew that iraq was running secret prisons. we now have a number of 1300 iraqi prisoners subjected to abuse and torture in those prisons but by other iraqis. >> let me ask you this about the hikers we've talked so much about over the last year or so the three hikers that were taken into custody by iranian authorities. these reports reveal they were on the iraqi side of the border right now. this, along with the fact that iran was trading and supplying weapons insurgents what does this mean for u.s.-iran relations as we move forward. >> first place the american report says they were on the iraqi side of the border. i'm sure the iranians would refute that. but the point here is that the

obama administration's policy of reaching out to iran has not produced any results. this was supposed to be a brand new start from the bush administration policy of confrontation with iran. but, as these documents show, they run through 2009, and on the last day of 2009, there was an iranian-backed rocket attack on the green zone in baghda >> unreal. thank you. as we continue to bring more of this to light. david, thank you very much for taking the time and being with us this morning. >> sure. >> now rebecca with the other top stories. fired npr analyst juan williams guest hosted fox's o'reilly factor last night as the media frenzy surrounding his abrupt dismissal continues. jim axelrod reports. >> reporter: two days after being fired from npr over comments made on fox about muslim airline passengers, juan williams defended his views on

"the o'reiy factor" his first appearance after inking a deal with the cable network. >> i can't be an analyst because i have been forthcoming. >> reporter: npr's decision has sparked a media frenzy but his firing as an npr news analyst is drawing criticism from unusual places. >> the firing of juan was a total mistake and sends the wrong message in pr, get yourself together. >> reporter: npr is now managing a public relations nightmare, especially after its ceo, publicly criticized juan williams. >> his feelings that he expressed on fox news are really between him and his, you know, psychiatrist or his publicist or take your pick. >> republican south carolina senator jim demint said he would introduce legislation to end fed rad funding for public broadcasters like npr saying there is simply no reason to force taxpayers to fund a liberal programming they disagree with.

still, williams believes his dismissal was less about what he said but who he said it to. >> they were looking for a reason to get rid of me because i appear on fox news. joining us now is president of the islamic forum for democracy a guest last night on the iraqi factor hosted by juan williams from phoenix, arizona. good morning. >> good morning, nice to be with you. >> good to have you. i want to begin with the original comments williams made on fox, he said getting on a plane seeing someone in muslim gash makes him nervous and fearful. does that constitute, in your opinion, racial profiling? >> absolutely not. i mean, you have to look at his entire comment. in the context of what he was saying, he was being honest about his feelings internally that there are aspects to the situation of air travel that are fearful to him. and if you look at, for example, let me give you an example of nadal hassan.

many colleagues at walter reed and the military were fearful of the things they had seen him talking about, presenting at presentation and seeing his dress become more conservative and a little unusual to them. and nobody spoke about it because they were worried about the public ramifications, exactly what happened to juan, somebody gets targeted as a bigot and it's about prejudice rather than vigilance. i think really what juan did is wake up america to talking, being able to figure out how we can have the skill to talk about these things without offending muslims and i can tell you, as a muslim, that i have many family members that are dressed conservative and not only about muslims but seiks and others that dress as something we should never target someone for however we have to understand to treat the problem of nypd report talk about the fact about conservative fundamentalism is part of the radicalization process we need to treat. >> an episode like this, then, doctor, is it beneficial in some

respects to muslims in america to just get in krve station started or do you think it is more harmful than good? >> i can't tell how beneficial it is. when you treat a disease like a 12-step process. we haven't even gotten past the first step, which is danial. these organizations that claim to represent us like the american american-islamic relations that initiated this firestorm. juan wasn't fired when he made these comments but two days hours later after c.a.r.e. released. most realize these groups are soaking up the bandwidth of attention of obvious indication, denial, deflection but most of us want to address the problems of reform, want that separate mosque and state and have the conversation to tell america that we want to lead the fight against radical islam, not just

be victim-mongers. >> your view would be most american muslims would disagree with the stance taken on the krun krill, which has attacked williams for his comments. >> and that's in the conversation i had with juan last night. that's what i was telling him is that i hope americans realize that most of us are starting to really get upset with the fact these groups are destroying our relationships with the american public. americans are looking upon us not as part of the solution but really part of the problem and then maybe the fear he was starting to talk about, it would only go away when americans see groups like our organization and we have an american islamic leadership coalition, of other organizations really focused on national security, the u.s. constitution, and diversity within our faith and that we're not just about demanding rights but we know we have a responsibility to solve this muslim problem. >> thank you for being with us, we really appreciate it. >> thank you for having me. >> back to chris. >> rebecca, thank you. president obama wraps up a

four-day campaign swing out west to bolster democratic candidates for the november elections. mr. obama has his work cut out for him as several polls show republicans poised to make major gains on november 2nd. chip reid has this report. >> reporter: president obama came to nevada to try to save the political life of one of his most important allies, senate majority leader harry reid. >> i want to a partner in the united states senate named harry reid. >> reporter: with the state unemployment rate above 14% and nevada ranking number one in the nation in foreclosures, reid has struggled to convince voters that the democrats' economic policies have helped. >> i can't do it alone. i need your help. >> man up, harry reid. >> reporter: reid is running neck and neck with republican sharron angle, a tea party favorite who blames reid for the state of the economy. >> we want to pass down to our children and grandchildren

before we talk about each specifically, i want to ask you, what do you think is going to be the real determining factor for these close, close races? >> well, of those 15, republicans have to take 10 away from democrats in the five we're looking at all democratic seats threatened and toss-ups, the key whether democrats can turn out their voters but the democrats, in most places, the better machinery to turn out those voters. so, if the machinery on the democratic left and on the right the conservatives are incredibly enthusiastic and whether republicans can get that enthusiasm and get people actually to the polls. >> all right. time to man up right here we'll talk about the first of five here. let's talk nevada harry reid and sharron angle in a battle right here and the majority leader is in a little bit of trouble. >> as chip mentioned in his piece, it is all about the economy there. majority leader is in bad shape in that state. people are blaming him, his disapproval number is high, much over his approval number and it's really a question whether

they can grind out the votes there. it will go right down to the wire. the president coming in helps harry reid but also his challenger sharron angle ran an ad with the president in it and helps conservatives. >> pennsylvania, joe sestak, pat toomey, another extremely tight race. what do you see with this one. >> tightening democrats coming home as they are some some states and basically reminded why they don't like republicans. this is happening in all of these tight races and democrats are -- look like they are turning out the question is whether that's a trend that stops or continues all the way to election day. >> illinois right now, two are vying for the president's old senate seat there. >> this the seat the race that doesn't have to do with sort of the national issues but all about character here. you you have basically on the one hand you have the republican who embellished his record and then on the democrat gene fuel louse, history or family relations with a bank that dealt with organized crime figures so

about the specifics of that race and looks incredibly tight, as well. >> moving to the t state of colorado now. >> colorado, the incumbent benet was appointed to the seat and looks like there is tightening like in pennsylvania. the ken buck, the republican is a tea party favorite and they basically in the end here, benet is surging but again a question whether that's a bit of a tiny surge that stops or whether it continues to election day. >> finally, let's round things out here with the state of west virginia, the race to fill robert byrd's senate seat. >> the race for joe manchin, signature governor to run away from the the citying president, president obama. he's been moving to the right the last couple of weeks and pushing away and the republican john raese saying manchin will be a rubber stamp in this seat so the president is really on the ballot in this specific race, he is in all of the races but this one specifically. it is a question whether the

democrat can get out from under the sgloopt john, i teed you up and you you hit it out of the park as always. good to see you. >> all right. >> now for a look at this morning's other top stories whit johnson is at the news desk for us this morning. good morning, whit. >> good morning, everyone. we begin with breaking news out of western afghanistan. one suicide bomber is dead, after attacking a united nations compound near harat. the attacker drove a car with explosive to the entrance of the building and blew it up. afghan police say at least three or insurgents dressed as women and police attacked the compound. one was killed. no one was inside the u.n. building. no be who was inside was hurt. haiti is teetering on the brink of a health catastrophe. a deadly cholera outbreak, nearly 200 people have died from the disease. more than 2000 others have been sickened. cholera is spread by unsanitary conditions. the epidemic is confined to a rural area but health officials fear it could spread to the

capital where hundreds of thousands of victims from january's earthquake still live in tents. in san antonio, texas concerns over possible deadly listeria contamination at a food processing plant. it is a bacteria found in water and soil. state officials have linked the sangar produce and processing company to contaminated celery that killed four people. the fda conducted tests at the company. the results of which will likely come out next week. state health officials have closed the plant and ordered the company to recall all produce from the plant. joom o.j. simpson won't be getting out of jail soon. the nevada supreme krourt refused to overturn his 2008 armed robbery and kidnapping convictions. the former football star is serving 9 to 33 years thanks to a bungled attempt to get back stolen sports memorabilia. simpson's lawyers plan to take their appeal to the federal courts. meanwhile lindsay lohan will be staying out of jail after failing a recent drug test.

instead, a los angeles judge has ordered the troubled actress to continue rehab until january 3rd. a judge had previously threatened to send lohan back to jail for each drug test she skipped or failed. our next hour we'll talk to an addiction expert who will explain why it's so important for lohan to stay in rehab through the holiday season. the rangers showed the 27-time world series champs yankees the way home. texas eliminated new york last night 6-1 in game six of the american league championship series. it was, indeed, a texas-sized victory since the rangers have inner won a postseason series. the rangers will begin world series play wednesday and eats san francisco or philadelphia. game six of the national league championship series is tonight. the giants have a 3-2 lead over the phillies. and here we go, we'll check with lonnie for a check of the weather. you know, i know we're in new york but in this area, from san francisco, all about the giants >> is it really? >> absolutely. >> good luck to them. there you have it, my friend.

>> the idea motherhood leaves moms forgetful. a new study is out about that. >> wait until you here. some good stuff. first we have news to get to, it took seconds a vicious shark attack off a california beach. when it was over a 19-year-old was dead. his long-time best friend matthew garcia was in the water two feet away. it was really fast, he said told the associated press. here sde here's keith carl's report. >> reporter: the santa barbara county sheriff's office says the attack happened just before 9:00 in the morning at surf beach on vandenberg air force base the only one of three open to the public. according to the sheriff's department 19-year-old lucas ransome and a friend were out about 150 yards in the water with two other witnesses watching on the beach when the shark attacked, biting off all

or a portion of one of his legs. >> the friend was surfing. the victim was boogie boarding. saw his friend go under water for a brief moment, came up, something was wrong. noticed that he had been attacked bay shark. >> fi crews were first to respond to the call for help and declared ransome dead on the beach. >> the boogie board was also recovered which had a large bite taken out of it. according to witnesses, the shark measured between 14 and 18 feet in length. >> reporter: a coast guard vessel and sheriff's department helicopter patrolled the waters along surf beach for hours after the attack looking not only for the shark but also for lucas ransome's missing limb. warning signing about the deadly shark attack have been posted at surf beach and more are expected to go up all along the central coast. the shark attack comes as a shock but not a total surprise for locals who know this stretch of coastline. >> yeah, it's scary. i mean, that can be anybody's

kid. they're out there. >> joining us with the latest on the search for the killer shark from surf beach at ven den berg air force base public information officer drew sugars of the santa barbara sheriff's office. thank you for joining us. >> good to be here. >> what can you tell us this morning as far as beach closures and the search for this shark at this hour? >> well, as protocol for vandenberg air force base when they have a shark attack like the one they had yesterday, they will shut down the public beaches for 72 hours so we're in the quite into the first 24 hours since the attack so it's going to be a couple more days before they clear these beaches. as for the county there are a couple of nearby beaches a few miles north of here. those have warnings that are posted. they are not closed but want people to be aware of the danger. as for the shark, it's out there somewhere. it could be long gone. nobody saw it yesterday. hopefully, it's long gone and we don't see this happen again.

>> let me ask you about that shark. i mean, judging from the bite mark on the boogie board you saw there, that lucas was on, what did that tell you guys about the size of this shark potentially? >> well, the witness originally told us between 14 and 20 feet, at the report said about 18 feet. the size of the teeth and the width there is going to help the experts determine what kind of shark this is. we have not determined the type. the witness did say that the top of the shark was gray, the bottom was white. this is typically a great white but we're not in a position to confirm that, hopefully by monday we'll be able to determine what type of shark this is but, yes, the teeth marks will help that determination. >> we heard from the report that some of the people, the eyewitnesses in the beach area said, you know, we know they're out there. it's really not a shock. do you have a lot of shark sights in that area there? is this something that's pretty common and are the surfers familiar with the fact this is

kind of an active shark area? >> i mean, "common" is a relative term. i really think it's very rare actually. we do have some sights here. we've only had one other fatality our bureau has worked in santa barbara county all the way back 1974. we had one north of here in 2003. and before that, it was 100 years. so, it's not very often that we have shark attacks here. we do have some sights but attacks are actually very rare. >> if this happens to be a great white shark and it is as big a shark as matthew garcia, lucas's friend in the water with him says it, is what does this say, what type of warning needs to be issued for other beaches in somewhat clos proximic area to this attack? that's a big shark. >> it is a big shark. obviously, we can see what it can do. what we pawn people and the county want people to be aware of is that there's danger here. you know, this is a beautiful state, state and area that we

live in with our mountains and back country and ocean but this beauty can also be ferocious. and it's a good warning for people when they go into the ocean that we are actually entering another habitat and keep your eyes open, look out. don't do things that you -- that would put you in danger if there's people that are fishing nearby with fishing boats, don't swim near there, don't swim with the seals. if you see something, get out of the water. >> final question for you, what's going to go on today? i guess you'll continue to search for the shark but what exactly -- from a search standpoint, what are you going to do and when do you call off the search because of what you said the shark has probably gone into other waurs? >> well, the sheriff's office is not conducting a search at this point. i'm not clear if the coast guard is doing that or not. our job right now is basically to determine the cause of death. it seems fairly obvious, by the witness accounts and what we've learned so far the shark, we're hoping is long gone. we are not going to search for the shark at this point. >> okay. officer drew sugars, thanks so

news travel editor peter greenberg. great to have you with us. >> great to be here. >> unfortunate topic. the scams look rampant. where do you see most of them. >> most online. nothing is more aluring or seductive than the idea of free travel. you will get something that says guess what, would you have won a free hotel stay in the bahamas. well, technically that's correct except in order to get that award, you have to have them book your travel there. oops, next thing you know it is a $1600 ticket to a hotel five miles from the beach and a bad time share scam stuck listening you didn't want to do and won the opportunity to go to your wallet and spend $1600. >> you are looking for scams that basically tell you to come to a hotel but you have to pay the air fare and everything else that goes witt. >> exactly. >> how about the discount travel clubs? you see that all over the internet these days, are they legit? >> well, some are but they're targeted really at seniors with a lot of extra time to travel. but look at the cost.

they are $6,000 travel clubs to join and $249 annual fee and processing fees, do the math. you -- >> it works out to more than the cost of the vacation. >> not only that when you go to claim this discounted travel fee, the actual air fare is as much if not more than what you could have done yourself online. >> so many different scammers, i noticed, these days are using breaking news on the internet. >> this re. >> to make people think something is real but you say to watch out for that when it comes to travel. >> the most recent example happened after the volcanic eruptions in iceland in april. all of a sudden everybody started getting e-mails from the civil aviation authority, which by the way does not exist if you were stranded overseas, you know, qualified for compensation, of course, in order to get that compensation, what do they want from you? credit card or banking information. next thing you know, there is no compensati compensation, you are paying them. >> leading to wire transfers, anytime asked for this you say should be a red flag. >> one of the most nefarious

scams, they have gone into your e-mail account, next thing you know i get an e-mail from you saying hi, peter, i'm stuck in a hotel in barcelona and have no money can, you help me. you go, i guess you should help her. the tip-off when i started getting from e-mails from people i only met once. >> i got one from a said who said he was in london and i have not spoken to him at least about two years when i got the e-mail. >> exactly. >> tell us tips for people overall for avoiding scams. >> first, always pay with a credit card but there is a caveat. under fair credit laws you can still get recourse if you don't get what you paid for in within 60 days so. don't pay for anything more than 60 days out. a lot of scams will ask for all the money up front. good luck trying to chase it. >> you say be ware language. what does that mean? >> anytime you are asked to give up banking information or credit card information to secure a prize, it's no prize. you are the booby-prize.

call the parietal lobe and in the brain stem. but one cell in particular the gray matter cell that doesn't usually increase dramatically in adulthood that's how researchers new the findings were significant. >> when we talk about mom-nesia, we have fun names, five or ten times a day walking into the group and forgetting what you walked into the room for. >> exactly. >> which leads me to ask, can men get that, as well? let's talk about some of the things people can do to avoid. >> actually mom-nesia, i have to say is thought by experts to be a good thing not that you are forgetful but focused. you might not know where your keys are but always where your baby is. it is important to write everything down. it seems obvious but if you make it a habit you can clear some of the space of your mind you go over and over during the day and have it a concise area. >> like not take on too much responsibility. you have -- you have to delegate a bit, right? >> that's right. >> if somebody offers to help,

take them up on it. all of sudden your responsibilities have gone from 200 in a day to 2000 so letting others help can take a load off. >> is it because all of the focus is on that child, making sure the child has everything you need you don't pay enough attention to the other so-called little things. >> that's exactly what it is. experts think it is not so much you are forget but really prioritizing the baby all their needs over finding your keys or knowing where they parked your car. i'm telling you i'm still suffering from mom-nessia and my child is almost 2. that's my ally. >> what is amazing the sleep deprivation. >> in the first year of a baby's life, the mother accumulating nearly 7 hurz hours of sleep deprivation. there is very little we can do to avoid that. but, just to know that when you're deprived of sleep your memory does not function, as well. >> you need to get that sleep. >> if you can. >> also, exercise is one of the other suggestions. >> exercise has been shown to help to convert short-term into

killing mostly iraqi civilians. wikileaks has done a tabulation and figured out that 31 iraqi civilians, innocent iraqi civilians were killed every day. our coverage of the war, naturally, focused on the thousands of american troops who were being killed and wounded. but, the fact is, and these documents demonstrate it, the people who suffered the most were iraqi civilians. war in the 21st century was supposed to be a war with high-precision weapons and was supposed to spare civilians. that turned out to be a false promise. >> all right. david martin, much more to come on this story i'm sure in the coming days. david, thank you. meanwhile tropical storm richard is on course to strike the northeast coast of honduras. the atlantic 17th storm of the season is churning in the western caribbean packing winds of 45 miles per hour. the national hurricane center in miami warns richard could become a hurricane over the weekend.

heavy rains could reach the american gulf coast by mid week. a public memorial planned for the pace university football player fatally shot by police sunday in westchester, new york. the 20-year-old from easton, massachusetts was shot in his car by officers responding to a disturbance at a bar. his teammates say he was handcuffed and left on the ground without medical attention and that they were arrested when they tried to perform cpr. police claim they fired on henry's car when he failed to stop and struck two officers. massachusetts senators scott brown is calling for a thorough investigation of the shooting. another power couple is born, katy perry expected to wed british actor russell brand. they arrived for a six-day wedding celebration, not invited four news trafrs who claim they were assaulted friday but two men who accompanied brand to a tiger reserve. it's about four minutes past

that does it for the pumpkins and now to my friend chris. >> lindsay lohan dodged another bullet. the troubled star will not go to jail for a probation violation this time. cbs news correspondent ben tracy has this report. >> reporter: deja vu at the beverly hills courthouse a somber looking lindsay lohan once again summoned to face a judge after failing a drug test but this time instead of jail the judge sent her back to rehab until after the new year. the judge said lindsay lohan, you are an addict. you know that. you need to be in treatment. and you need to avoid the holidays, because i don't want you to be tempted by drugs or alcohol. >> reporter: lohan voluntarily checked herself into the betty ford clinic three weeks ago, her fifth stint in rehab in three years. friday a judge said a letter lohan wrote to the court influenced his decision. >> lindsay wrote a handwritten note to the judge saying your

honor give me a chance, i'm in treatment, let me stay there. and he went for it. >> reporter: lohan appeared relieved but in a probation report she told an officer, quote, she cannot afford to continue to pay for the treatment program and she needs to work. and rehab won't be easy. >> she's in a rehabilitation program that's known for its hard-core intense regiment. this isn't a cakewalk. >> reporter: the judge seems less career with her career getting off track than her life becoming a train wreck. ben tracy, cbs news, los angeles. >> joining us from our los angeles bureau to talk about the challenges lohan faces as she tries to control her addiction is addiction specialist dr. howard samuels and founder of the hills treatment center. what if she can, of course, we'll talk about that, as well and beth karas has the legal consequences. good morning both of you. beth starting with you, the judge could have easily put her back in jail and handed down a stiffer penalty y. do you think she didn't? >> this was a misdemeanor.

there is a lot discretion in a judge unlike felonies sometimes sentencing is mandatory. the judge clearly recognizes she's an acdikt and treatment is what she needs, in-patient treatment is what she needs, not to be out on promise she's going to do the right thing because she keeps relapsing. she needs behavior modification and doesn't happen in two or even four weeks. >> dr. samuels, what type of behavior modification would you recommend would be best for your case knowing what you know about her history? >> well, first of all, somebody that has multiple relapses, multiple treatment centers and the judge has

said january 3rd. that gets her through the holidays. what's the significance behind, a, the january 3rd date and do you think that's enough? apparently you don't think so. >> first of all, i think it is great she be in treatment during the holidays because the holidays can be very triggering for an addict/alcoholic because of all the partying. but, you have to understand something, this is just residential treatment. she then has to transition and she really needs to be in a sober living house for the next nine months in order to really learn how to live clean and sober in the real world. that is what's most difficult. it's easy to be in residential once you're there, it's very structured. you're not triggered. you are around a lot of sober people. but the real challenge is going to be when she leaves and has to go out into the real world. that's why she needs to be in a halfway house. >> beth, if she gets out and a period of time before she gets out of betty ford before her next court appearance say she tests positive again. what does the judge do?

>> he told her she is getting 180 days, six months in jail. that will be the residential treatment next time around without the dids arouoctors aro >> as far as the state of denial, we know she's been in one for quite some time now, talking about not being able to afford staying in betty ford impacting her career do you think she finally gets it or like some celebrities really not getting the message just yet. >> well, it's not about celebrities. everybody talks about celebrities like they're some kind of alien race. you know, this is a case of an addict/alcoholic, like any addict/alcoholic there, is a tremendous amount of denial. and in a case like this, it f she can't afford betty ford, there's a lot of treatment centers that are a lot cheaper than betty ford that are equally as good. so, you know, they're out there if she so wants to get sober. >> okay. thank you both very much. we do appreciate it. >> you're welcome. next early coffee with

morgan? >> yeah. >> quite a cast. >> yeah. you know, it's a very rare thing. i have in essence retired from acting and don't think of it as the center of my life. but, when you get a chance to do something with people that you so admire, that's so rare. and they don't write films anymore, at all, for actors, at all. >> you've been in so many films at this point from "jaws" too "close encounters of the third kind". >> "birth of a nation." >> to name a few. when it comes to all these different roles do you have one in your career that really stands out for you? >> i really don't. i mean, i sometimes lie about it and say i do. but, in fact, i -- i wanted to be an actor when i was 8 and i wanted the life. i wanted the body of work, and i never lost sleep over a job i didn't get because i wanted the

whole thing. and i never took a job for any reason but love. >> if we can, though, if we can kind of go back and like i mentioned to you before "close encounters" one of new top five favorites of all time. when you are doing a movie like that, even" jaws" do you have an idea, i mean they are classics -- >> "jaws" i didn't think would ever make it out of -- you know, was a bust and a failure and i went on tv and said so. >> was there something specific about it that made yougy that way. >> well, that it treb belled its budget and quad you are pelled its schedule and the shark never worked. >> only needed for one, one take? >> so i just didn't know enough. but "close encounters" i lied, bad-mouthed every actor in hollywood to get that part because i new that it would outlive us all. because it was so -- such a

noble idea. i used to walk by steven's office and say, nicholson is crazy! or, al pacino has no sense ever humor. i got the part because i said to him one day, you need a child. and he went, you got the part. >> one final question for you, are you surprised spielberg never made it? for you voted by you, striped bass on our budget of just $40. good morning, chef. >> good morning. >> what is on the menu. >> the parsnip soup and kale and frick. >> we'll get to what that means but what's in it? amplts straight-forward soup with interesting vegetable. a lot like carrots. we start this soup by sweating onions, leeks, garlic and once that starts to soften up and cooks for about four minutes we'll go ahead and add these parsnips we peeled. >> peeled and chunked up. >> once you get it in here with liquid, which we'll use water and milk, mostly because we want

the soup to come in out in a nice light color and water because it really needs the liquid to share its flavor and cook softly. >> how long are we doing this. >> you are going to cook that about 20, 25 minutes until those pieces of parsnip get nice and soft. then what happens you pass it in a blen der, strain it. the interesting thing about the parsnips they come out sweet and really smooth. >> ooh. >> what that looks like once you get it in the plate is amazing. >> almost has a milky looking feel to it. >> parsnips are really cool, they are great for every day. not expensive and are distinct enough in flavor you can serve them for, you know, for holidays. >> uh-huh. >> so what we did to make this soup special, we took chestnuts, also all the ingredients from the farmer's market. you can, too. it's the best way to shop in new york city. >> what did you do with those. >> we roasted them. score them, toss them in the oven for about 15 minutes. then you blend them with water,

veg stabl stock in this case a bit of chicken stock and then what happens is they come out nice and soft and tender and moist. >> this is the after on the chestnut. >> that's were it looks like once they're roasted. and, you know, i think great soups have lots of texture so. we'll use. >> are those brussel sprouts? >> leaves of which we lightly sauteed. every bite should have texture. >> i'm going to try it y. don't you go on as i feed myself to the main course. >> the main course is striped bass. it is a wild fish and one of our great seasonal celebrations in the northeast, this from the long island sound. the way to handle this guy is lightly saute it, look for a bit of color. this is how you get it started. your pan medium hot. >> you heat it before you put the oil in. >> that's a good idea so the fish gets a chance to carmelize and not stick. >> okay. >> so, as the heat of this pan comes up let's season the

striped bass here. >> how do you know how much salt to put on it. i've made fish before and i'm not sure whether i'm oversalting. >> you can always add. i would be conservative to begin with. for me, it is mostly by eye but, you know, you have to taste. that's the best way to do it. you can always add some at the end. we are going to, a bit of fleur de sil, that a crunch, as well. once the pan gets hot, you can hear it as the fish hits the pan, it doesn't stick, give it a sizzle and this will go about three to four minutes on both sides. then just so that you can see how this finishes, we'll let these guys cook nice and easy and taste them in a minute. this guy was started ahead of time. a great way to finish this is, excuse me i'm going to grab a little spoon here. you don't want to add too much fat to the dishes because they are dynamite the way they are

and don't want to hide the players but a bit of butter in the pan, a sprig of thyme and piece of crushed garlic. >> you are not chopping this up or doing anything special, just throwing it in tlimplts just making it taste good. we'll baste the fish before we serve it. frick, is an interesting whole grain. we focus on heir loom vegetables, heritage meats and a new part of the story is whole grains. in the northeast we are growing a lot of interesting ones, simple like wheat berries, spelk, barley, these things are interesting ways to use, you know, vehicles for dynamite -- >> at the grocery store, is that what you would be looking for go up and say where's the frick here. >> great place in green market in the city but also across the country and lots of sources on the internet now market heritage variety. people go to great lengths to save these varieties because they are disappearing quickly.

>> how long do we have it in here with the special seasonings that you've just put on top. >> this is really, at this point, again, i had a chance to get a headstart. so, this fish is fully cooked. once the butter is melted, we're just going to give it a base like that and it will taste a little garlicky and like this. >> looks beautiful. >> this thyme. so, we'll head to the plate. >> plating. >> this has been cooked about 30 minutes with the kale, this is black kale, it goes together and a nice big spoonful. >> once we plate that we'll move for the dessert, my favorite, apple crisp. >> our cue. >> how are you? >> try the soup, it's delicious. >> i'm going for the fish. >> whatever you want. >> i'm going for the fish, as well. >> a carrot cilantro salsa you guys should give thatt taste. >> i'm smelling this from across the studio. >> then we have the apple crisp. >> we serve it at gramercy
