weather first. showers lair on. not an all-day rain but this afternoon may run in to a shower or thunderstorm and our seasonably warm air mass has been affecting us for the last several days. let's take a look at the day planner on this monday morning. we expect temperatures to climb to 70 by noon after being in the 63 range by 9:00. even by noon can't rule out a light shower. by 5:00 a few showers or thunderstorms here and there. temperatures in the low 70s. winds from the east and southwest 10 to 15 today, topping off at 7 a. this morning, big time showers and storms through mississippi and alabama this morning approaching georgia, tennessee and kentucky as well and the moisture is moving to the northeast. the temperatures getting ready to walk out the door. laurel is 49. they have the cool spot. leesburg 50. 58 for arlington and andrews and at washington we are at 60

toll road traveling from the greenway to the beltway. back to you. this morning opening statements begin in the trial of a man charged with murdering chandra levy. >> ingmar guandique is accused of killing the 24-year-old intern in 2001 while she was jogging in rock creek park. kristin fisher is joining us from dc superior court with more on the proceedings this morning. >> reporter: good morning. it has taken almost a decade of police work followed by a week of jury selection to get to where we are right now, which is five hours away from the start of the chandra levy murder trial. the man at the center of it all, 29-year-old ingmar guandique, an illegal immigrant and alleged ms-13 gang member from el salvador who was already in prison for attacking two other women in rock creek park. now he is standing trial for kidnapping, raping, robbing and murdering levy back in may of 2001. there's no dna evidence in this case, nor are there any

eyewitnesses. ingmar guandique denies he ever committed the crime. he will be judged by a jury of 12 women and four men. there are no latinos, despite the fact the defense argued he would not get a fair trial without one. some of the questions asked during jury selection suggest the defense may try to blame gary condit for levy's murder. the congressman had been a prime suspect in the murder after he admitted to having an affair with the 24-year-old intern. a spokesperson for condit said he does expect to testify, but of course, that will not take place likely for several weeks. this is a trial that's likely expected to take several months before it is complete. and it all starts right here at 10:00 this morning. >> before you go, no eyewitnesses and no dna evidence. so what is at the heart of the prosecution's case against

ingmar guandique? >> well, pretty much the crux of the case really, on the prosecution's end really comes from jailhouse informants. like you said, there is no dna evidence, no eyewitnesses in this case. so the prosecution, the crux of their case comes from alleged admission that the defendant made to other inmates while in prison for those other attacks in rock creek. back to you. >> kristin fisher reporting live from dc superior court. while you slept alternate reported an insurgent attack in eastern afghanistan killed one of the service members. no word on the soldiers nationality. more violence in pakistan this morning. a bomb planted on a motorcycle kills five people and wounds more than a dozen in central pakistan. that blast occurred at the gate of a famous shrine during morning prayers today. it is the latest in a string of

attacks. they disagree with their interpretation of islam. some amazing and scary video this morning of a tornado strike in texas. you can see the debris from a structure being whisked in the air. it appears the person with the camera was on i-45, which is south of dallas. some cars on the interstate were flipped over. some injuries were reported as well as damage to homes and the roof of an elementary school was torn off. federal investigators will be digging through the remains of an historic church in alexandria this morning looking for the cause of a devastating fire over the weekend. the flames destroyed thermal manual chapel -- the main july chap cull. despite the fire, the members showed up for services this weekend. >> it is slaughtly heart

breaking my late husband and i went to this church for 30 years, and it's gone. >> reporter: now the rector says the church will go on. it goes well beyond the brick and mortar building. we have learned the names of the men suspected of running a drug lab. two students and one guest have been charged with manufacturing a controlled substance. authorities and emergency crews responded to the freshman dorm early saturday after a strange odor was reported. 400 students were evacuated from harbin hall. time for the money report of the morning. jessica doyle is off today and so are some of the international markets. they posted losses in today's trading. the hang seng gained 1%. we will see how u.s. traders respond in a few hours when the

markets here open. a mixed ending on friday to what was overall a positive week on wall street. the cost of wheat and corn are up which means what you pay for a box of cereal may be heading that way, as well. beef and pork prices are rising and fast food chains will have to absorb the extra cost or pass the expense on to you. a popular venue reopened after a major makeover. the arena stage in southwest washington celebrated the grand reopening this weekend. visitors were able to check out the historic, the new and renovated stages of the building. among the free events, a performance from oklahoma and a chance to mingle with broadway and tony heyward winning stars. still ahead, a desperate effort is underway to stop the spread of cholera in haiti.

road in virginia from herndon to tysons and beyond. coming up we will focus on more virginia roads. in the news now the cholera outbreak in haiti spreads much closer to the earthquake survivor refugee camp. >> that's right. five people in the capitol of port-au-prince have been diagnosed with the disease so far. however, health officials say all of them apparently contracted cholera outside of the city. 250 people have died from the disease so far, and the fear is the you break will spread to those refugee camps. that's where 1.3 million earthquake survivors are now living. burials are underway for the young people gunned down on friday night in flores, mexico. 14 young people died in the second mass shooting in a party this month. they blame the increase in violence on a split with a powerful drug cartel. check this out.

the entire nation. and almost ten years after her murder, opening statements in her alleged killer's trial are set to start in just under five hours at 10:00 a.m. now, the defendant is none other than 29-year-old ingmar guandique, an alleged -- he's an illegal immigrant from el salvador and alleged ms-13 gang member. he is accused of raping and murdering the 24-year-old intern in may of 2001. her body wasn't found until a year later, so there is no dna evidence, no murder weapon and no eyewitnesses. ingmar guandique says he's not guilty in this case, but he is already in prison for attacking two oh women in rock creek park. and that's where the bulk of the prosecution's case is going to come from, jailhouse informants. prosecutors say that ingmar guandique admitted to his former cell mates he did dill levy. so their testimony will be a

key part of the prosecution's case and another person that could take the stand is california congressman condit. he had been the prime suspect in the murder after he admitted to having an affair with levy back in 2001. fen, no board for certain if he will or will not take the witness stand. if he does that will likely be self weeks away because this is going to be a very, very long trial which starts today in just under five hours. back to you. a prince georges county couple hopes to win an appeal to transfer their children to the school of their choice. jackson speight is a child with special needs and he has wound up on the wrong bus and alen far from home twice in the last few months. when it happened 82 days ago an alert parent spotted the boy and took him back to school. >> we took steps to make sure it never happened again. we met with them and did

everything we know how to do and for them to be irresponsible to let this happen again is unacceptable. >> reporter: they say school administrators displayed a cavalier attitude about the incident. they are hoping their appeal for a transfer succeeds so they will not have to take legal action. thus far, county officials have not returned calls seeking comments on the case. we can expect more digging in to the apparent hacking of computers used at the summer jobs program. the payroll documents seem to show that hackers diverted funds using the names and account numbers of people no longer on the payroll there. the documents we have show the theft started in july and continued in to this month. the hackers cranniesed students hourly wait from $7 an hour to $25 an hour. sources say the loss is already in the many thousands of dollars. >> our job as overseers over these particular agencies is to markhor the dollars are spent
