this is 9 news now. we have breaking news from glen echo maryland. montgomery county police say they have found the body of a

woman in the 6200 block of massachusetts avenue. it is unclear exactly how the woman died. a 9 news now crew is on the way to the scene and we will have more information for you when it is available. more than nine year air force the murder, prosecutors are laying out their case and the trial of the man accused of killing chandra levy. kristin fisher is standing by live at dc superior court with more information. kristin? >> reporter: hi, jc. opening statements in the case wrapped up a half hour ago inside of a very packed courtroom. and it started with the prosecution making their case against 29-year-old ingmar guandique. and here he is. he is an illegal immigrant from el salvador and he's accused of raping, robbing and murdering 24-year-old chandra levy while she was jogging in rock creek park in may of 2001. the prosecution told the jury in opening statements if you are expecting dna evidence or eyewitness accounts it's not

going to happen. remember, levy's body wasn't found until about a year later. so the prosecution says any dna evidence washed away. therefore, the prosecution's case is going to center around testimony from jailhouse informants, specifically ingmar guandique's former cell mates who say that ingmar guandique confessed to killing levy while in prison. the defense countered by saying ingmar guandique did not do it. they say there is dna evidence in the case and it exonerates ingmar guandique. the defense called ingmar guandique's former cell mate jailhouse snitches, especially telling the jurors their testimony is simply not reliable. a few other notable witnesses to talk about, former california congressman gary condit. that's the man who had been the prime suspect in lee levy's murder after he had confessed to having an affair with her. he is expected to testify at some point throughout the trial

and another warm that ingmar guandique admitted to attacking. that woman is expected to take the stand later this afternoon. >> thank you very much. we will follow the story throughout the day. the georgetown university students accused of operating a drug lab out of their dormitory are due in court today. carbon hall was evacuated on saturday morning after students reported a strange odor. seven people were exposed to noxious odors. two georgetown university student and john perrone a guest have been charged with manufacturing a controlled substance. we are hearing from the man who risked his own life to save someone who slipped on metro tracks. surveillance video caught theracys in arlington. 57-year-old man avoided electrified rails when he jumped across the tracks to save a man who suffered a seize

your. he told mike hydeck this morning his instincts just took over. >> i thought he was coherent enough initially to understand my direction and get on the platform. when he started to try to stand up and was wobbling between the platform and the first rail and he started to lean back, that's when i realized he had a problem. and that's when i decided the hell with it. got to go get the guy. >> reporter: after rescuing the man, he quietly returned to the other side of the station and he boarded the train to union station. he says he was aware of the powerful third rail because his father was an engineer with the new york subway system. a new poll gives maryland governor martin o'malley a solid lead in his re-election campaign. the "washington post" survey says o'malley leads former republican governor robert ehrlich by double-digits.

54% of those surveyed said they are likely to vote for governor o'malley. 40% said they will support ehrlich. turn our attention to other races in the crucial midterm elections. president obama is hitting the campaign trail today with midterm elections a week away the president is focusing his evidents on states where senators and other democratic leaders are in danger of losing their jobs. joel brown has more. >> reporter: it's the last full week of campaigning before midterm elections, and there's more bad news for democrats. a new poll shows they are on course to suffer big losses in congress because they have lost the support of independents. the latest poll from politico gives republicans a five-point lead over democrats and it's the 14 point edge among unhappy independents that is putting the gop in front. >> the voters are tired of the fact the federal government has not listened to them over the

past two years. >> reporter: democrats are doing all they can to hold back the tide. last night, former president clinton stumped for terrell clark. he says her republican opponent is too extreme. >> in this crowd in her, her opponent make richard nixon look like a member of the students for a democratic society. >> reporter: as democrats battle to hang on to congress, president obama will visit at least five states between now and election day starting with rhode island. but even that's gotten messy. >> this morning the democratic candidate for rhode island governor went on the radio and told president obama to shove it after learning obama would not endorse him. his independent opponent, lincoln chaffey, a former republican senator endorsed obama in 2008. obama had planned to talk in rhode island about the economy. the number one issue on voters ' minds. but in the flap over his endorsement, the key message

could get lost. joel brown, cbs news, washington. it appears both parties have time to sway voters. according to a new poll one third of vote ers say they are undecided or say they are concerning a certain candidate but could change their mind. today marks the opening gala celebration for arena stage and it's new needs center for american theater. the 60-year-old theater company is returning to its home campus on the southwest waterfront in a new $185 million facility. -- $135 million facility. the president and first i lady are the chase of the first season and felicia vara shard with will start in a new production this fall. the we was perfect for the army ten miler. 30,000 participated in the race. that started and finished at the pentagon. dozens of wounded soldiers competed in the run.

old jennifer immediate lured a man to a home on saturday where the man was robbed and shot. the st. petersburg police chief says two co-defendants have admitted their role in the killing. she gained attention in ten when she hiccupped 550 times a minute for several months. she tried several recommend day dids until the hiccups went away on their own. the nevada supreme court is refusing to end o.j. simpson's conviction. simpson is serving nine to 33 years in prison for a robbery at las vegas hotel. he maintains that he was attempting to retrieve family photos and momentos. randy quaid and his wife are seeking asylum in canada. in a rambling statement before the immigration board, eva quaid says eight of her husband's acting friends have been murdered in recent years and so they felt they would be

" the actor and his wife are accused of failing to pay a large hotel bill and illegally living in a home in california. the body of usa swimmer who died in a weekend race near dubai is being transferred to u.s. authorities today. 28-year-old fran from philadelphia went under in the final stretch of an open water competition. cbs's charlie d'agata has the report from london. >> reporter: it's what he worked his whole life for. a shot at making the u.s. olympic swim team. >> i had a great opportunity ahead of me. i'm looking to seat the moment. >> reporter: it was his last. the 26-year-old died during a six-mile race on saturday off the coast of the united arab emirates. >> it was his whole life and he was dedicated to his dream and his dream was to make the

olympic team and he fought. >> they blame his death on over exertion. several competitors said the sea was too hot at 90 degrees. rescue teams and rom competitors began to search for him when he failed to finish and discovered his body two hours later, 400-yards from the finish line. >> they were sad because one of theirs had gone missing and now they found him. >> reporter: he told his sister he was worried about inadequate safety measures at some open water races. some have been criticized for not having enough boats out to keep an eye on the swimmers. an investigation is underway but knowing how he died won't take away the pain left behind like his coach. >> i love him. we had a cup of coffee after every morning practice. >> reporter: fellow swimmers met at the spot where crippen's body was found to remember the

we are in a tornado. we are in the tornado. >> this is incredible video from a tornado in texas this weekend. the emergency coordinator captured this twister as it ripped through the mall town of rice. buildings were torn apart. debris flipped through the air. at least four people were injured. as you can see the roof came off of that high school and even some rail cars were knocked off of train tracks. >> jc, we are in the mini severe weather season. you think of tornado season as being in the spring, and yes it is in the bring but now as we go through the transition of seasons once again you get a mini season so to speak in the fall and that's what happens. >> incredible. >> yep. >> i'm keeping my umbrella handy today. >> you are a smart lady. you listened to me this morning. >> i did. a couple of showers approaching the region as we go through the afternoon. as far as the day planner is concerned the key stories are

the temperatures, the warmth that is out there. temperatures by 3:00, 73. 6:00 71. and we will slowly drop to the mid 60 by midnight and there's a chance, a slight chance of a shower or even a thunderstorm here. better chance the farther south you go, especially to the carolinas and notice the winds from the south 10 to 15. that will keep the temperatures up as we go throughout the wherever night hours. show you in the satellite and radar. we had some sun earlier this morning. a lot of showers from western pennsylvania through western virginia, carolinas and approaching charlottesville and harrisonburg wane are picking this up on live doppler 9000 hd. i want to show you what is going on here. it is quiet in and around washington. to the west here from new market, virginia down to harrisonburg, up to romney and a kaiser, wood stock, this is lifting north. this will be another hour or two in winchester but romney this is knocking on your gear step and tracking up to cumberland. temperatures, by the way, in front of the showers are really

warm. 71 here. mid-70s richmond, norfolk and cumberland 59. the showers over there. locally we have 70 gaithersburg and manassas. it is 70 in laurel. college park 72. arlington 66 -- 69. dew point over 60 with winds south at 16. a muggy air mass is in place and we will continue to watch the showers but as long as we have the storm in the midwest, the warm temperatures will be with us. big storms in the southeastern u.s. this will be off and on this afternoon and for the next several days. in fact here's the next three day outlook. 75 today with a few showers possible. tomorrow a couple of showers and 78 and then wednesday, upper 70s with showers and storms. as we go through the next seven, low 70s by thursday. we clear out on thursday. friday and saturday, chilly and sunday, halloween looks milder. low 70s with a chance of a late- day shower. it is monday and that means it is time for momslikeme.com and
